Why would ever expect a trap!?

Once lit, the fire in the bit blazing nicely with little maintenence. Those not on watch fall asleep easily and have peaceful dreams.

Kayla's and Brynn's Will Saves

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (15) + 4 = 19

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (16) + 2 = 18

After a few minutes of talking, Kayla and brynn drift off to a easy, restful sleep!

The sun is 2 hours up when the Dragoons wake up. Clearly, no one has kept watch.

What does everyone do?

Shadow Lodge

Oh, Osslend, since you don't have a bedroll, I need a fortitude save from you please.

Female Aasimar Cleric / 1

Kayla wakes up and yawns, then realizes the sun has been up for a while. "I missed the sunrise? Wait a minute, when did I fall asleep? Brynn, did you let me sleep through our watch?"

Kayla looks around to see if anything is missing or out of place.
Perception 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (11) + 5 = 16

male 1/2 Elf Sage Sor/Wiz 2 Gestalt

I didn't realize we were going to camp so quickly. I was planning on putting up a web shelter, though it will only last 5 hours it's better than nothing. Also was going to summon a few unseen servants to do some basic camp maintenance (gathering firewood and what not). Going to sleep after casting as to replenish my spells fully.

wEb ShELTEr:

School conjuration (creation); Level cleric 2, druid 2, ranger 2,
sorcerer/wizard 2, summoner 2, witch 2
components V, S, DF
casting Time 1 minute
range close (25 ft. + 5 ft./two levels)
Effect 5 ft.–10 ft. diameter web sphere or 5 ft.–20 ft. hemisphere
duration 1 hour/level (D)
Saving Throw none; Spell resistance no
You create a shelter of slightly sticky webbing. The shelter
has a hinged door large enough to accommodate a Medium
creature. The opaque walls of the shelter measure 1 inch thick
and provide total cover to anyone within it.
Only Fine creatures with negligible Strength can be caught
in the webbing (including swarms); all other creatures can
pull themselves free without making a Strength check or
taking an action. The webbing is sticky enough to hold twigs,
leaves, dirt, and other light items, allowing you to conceal
the shelter. The shelter is watertight and insulated when the
door is closed. Its surface has a hardness of 0 and 2 hit points
for every 5-foot square of web surface area. It takes normal
damage from fire and burns as easily as wood. When the spell
ends, the webbing decays rapidly and disappears. If you cast this spell while another casting is still in effect, the
previous casting is dispelled.

Female (for now) Human 6 Barbarian

This is awkward...I was planning on doing the perimeter search while they lit the fire. That was a little unfair :/

Shadow Lodge

The web shelter goes up for 5 hours. The unseen servants bring the firewood while Brynn is doing the search. The fire ignites as he steps into the shelter. Now, its morning, the sun has been up two hours and Kayla wakes first and speaks to Brynn. See discussion thread for more info.

Everything appears to be where you left it, although, some of your packs are open...

"What the devil!" Cecil exclaims as he looks around.

(FYI Owen has 'saddle bags' that would have disappeared with him. The contents of which are detailed on the character sheet.)

Shadow Lodge

...and all of your food is missing.

Survival checks? Hint: this is a hard DC, people with low survival skills may make a DC 10 check to add +2 to another roll. I will allow 2 +2 boosts to anyone 1 persons roll.

Cecil takes a minute to summon Owen

Owen has +12 and Cecil will have to take 10 to add to another's roll.

DM:

I don't exactly know whats happening (as I shouldnt), but Owen was away with his saddlebags, which contained a bag of holding, which contained 30 day's of rations (for one person). Just FYI in case it's relevant. Admittedly split between 4 people plus animals it would only last for a few days at most.

Holy crap! Cecil to the rescue! That's totally legit. When Owen gets there, you have his saddle bags. Everyone else's food is missing. Nice tactic sir!

Happy coincidence. ;-)

Cecil quietly to himself as he notices everyone looking around for their missing food. After summoning Owen, Cecil reaches under one of Owen's wings to reach his hand into a small "saddlebag" his side. After not initial finding what he's looking for Cecil reaches his entire arm into a bag. It's obviously a magical bag or his entire arm wouldn't fit. He then pulls out enough hard dry rations for everyone for breakfast meal.

"As it turns out I have some rations that were inaccessible during the night. A fortunate coincidence. I have enough to get us through at least a few days. They're not particularly tasty, but they're adequate."

M Human Level 6 Cavalier (Houndmaster)

Doh! It didn't occur to me (Ed) to buy one. Osslend would have thought of it. Dernit. Well, if you allow a retroactive purchase, I'm happy to spend the coin. If not, that's cool.

Fort save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (3) + 6 = 9

Bryce curses roundly as he realises what the group's lack of attention has led them to... and what might have happened. So is this new trouble, or did it follow us from the palace? Could've cut our throats if they'd wanted. Whoever they were. Could all be laying bled out on the ground right now... He carefully checks his weapons, armor, and other supplies for sign of tampering. He also checks in on the horses. Bryce works in grim silence, and his anger is almost palpable.

Eventually he speaks, through gritted teeth, "I'll look for tracks. Cecil, do you have enough provisions to get us to the next village, or should I see about hunting up some game?"

He starts to circle the camp site, almost without waiting for reply.

crunch:
Survival (Track): 1d20 + 10 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 10 + 2 = 20 plus an additional 4 if any tracks were made by humans, or plus an additional 2 if any tracks were made by magical beasts.

Male Elf Monk 2/Ninja 4

How did we all sleep through being robbed? So much for my elvish light sleeping. I better look around and check everything else too. This is almost as bad as my training in the mountains when the bear ate all my food.

Crunch:
Survival 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (10) + 5 = 15

"Hey Brynn! Did you get hungry last night hm?" Shinami laughed.

Female Aasimar Cleric / 1

Trying to speak loudly so that Bryce can still hear her as he walks off, Kayla addresses the group. "Please remember we do not have much time to search around. Also, whoever took our food didn't cause us any harm or take anything else and I find it hard to be angry at someone who may be starving stealing some food."

Kayla double checks her gear to make sure everything else is still there and offers up her prayers to Sarenrae a bit later than usual.

Female (for now) Human 6 Barbarian

This is impossible. How did...magic?

Brynn shakes off the sleep. Searching his bag for anything missing, he starts to go red in the face, though one may not be able to tell if it's from anger or embarrassment.

"This is crazy. I've always been the night watch. I never fall asleep on watch. Never. This firepit...was it a magical trap? I don't even remember getting back from my patrols last night."

The red starting to fade from his face, Brynn forces a smile toward Shinami in regard to his jab. He holds up his left hand, closes it into a fist except for his middle finger which wears a plain, pewter ring, buffed somewhat shinier than most pewter. "This, my boy, feeds me greater than kings. It provides me with food enough to never even think of hunger, and refreshes my mind enough to only ever need a couple hours' rest each night. Gives me six more hours to my day." The red completely gone from his face, Brynn is able to genuinely smile now, a memory obviously passing through his mind. My brothers...what trouble we got ourselves into...

Female Aasimar Cleric / 1

"Magical trap?" Kayla casts Detect Magic and examines first the firepit and then the rest of the campsite, recasting as needed.

"I have enough for one man for thirty days. Split up among us I think perhaps a few days at most."

Shadow Lodge

Kayla Adrianas wrote:

Kayla:

There appears to be a spell about this pit that puts those close to it into a deep slumber. The aura is not malicious.

Female Aasimar Cleric / 1

Looking thoughtful, Kayla says: "It looks as if there is indeed a spell upon this firepit that puts those around it into a deep slumber."

Nodding, Kayla adds, "We could stop by this way again on our return trip when we have more time."

"If we do might I recommend not using the fire pit." Cecil say's with more than a hint of sarcasm.

Is everyone ready to move on?

Female (for now) Human 6 Barbarian

"It's best if we get on our way. We lost about an hour, but I do have to admit...damn, that sleep felt good. At least the spell or thief didn't harm any of us."

Addressing Cecil, "Thirty rations? Not sure how much your hounds need, Osslend, but if they each eat as much as we do, we have..." eyes looking upward, Brynn is obviously doing the math in his head, "about five days. If the pups can split one ration per day, then that gives us six."

Edit: question posed for Ed and DSP: exactly what do the dogs need as far as sustenance goes? And for that matter, horses, pets, companions, etc. Never thought about that before.

Horses can graze though that takes more time away from travel. Typically for a long trip they would have a certain amount of oats as part of the gear, though i assume those are gone also. Owen is medium so I assume he eats as much as a human. Also he's not actually an animal, so I don't guess rations will be an issue for him. Although he's not even summoned when we're riding so he probably won't need much food. Depends on if he "eats" when hes on his home plane. It's an interesting question that i've never thought about before.

From a woodsman's perspective it probably wouldn't be a bad idea to break camp early tomorrow so those capable can hunt a deer down or something while others gather edible plants. All the while the no doubt exhausted horses can graze. I say "woodsman" because Cecil isn't enough of a woodsman to know to suggest such a thing. One of the more naturey types will need to bring it up.

Shadow Lodge

After a few minutes, Bryce and Shinami return to the group.

Bryce speaks. "well, it was tough, but we managed to find a single footprint. Look s like it belongs to a child...but there's no real trail to follow."

M Human Level 6 Cavalier (Houndmaster)

Osslend finishes packing his gear. "A child? Well, I don't think we've got time to go chasing anyone, especially a child. Like Kayla said, if it's just someone who needs food, they can have it. We'll make do. I say we go."

Turning to Brynn, "They certainly don't eat as much as a man, and we can always hunt if need be. I wouldn't worry about it too much, yet."

"In my experience, starving children don't generaly use magical traps, or take food but not shelter or coin. But we don't have time to investigate further. It's not our mission. Let us carry on."

Bryce is clearly not happy leaving this unresolved, but prepared to let it go in order to make progress with their task.

Female Aasimar Cleric / 1

If everyone's in agreement, I guess we continue our journey to Faelstaff.

Shadow Lodge

The party breaks camp and begins another long day of travel.

I made some perception checks for you, and all of you failed...lol

As night falls in earnest, you see torch light and fires in the distance: Koppolex!

As you get up to the gates, there is a single guard. He's about 14 years old in over sized chain and a bronze helmet.

"Sorry sirs, but you'll have to sleep outside the walls. I'm not asposed to let folk in after dark."

He genuinely does look sorry.

He points to a stable around the wall. "There's fresh hay and no horses there."

M Human Level 6 Cavalier (Houndmaster)

Osslend smiles and nods to the boy. "I'm happy to sleep there, son, and thank you for telling us about it. I'm curious, though...is this a new rule about folks after dark? Has there been trouble here recently?"

Shadow Lodge

"No sir, Magistrate has always refused entry to folk after nightfall. Tis safer that I a s'pose. You're welcome to come in in the morning though! There's going to be a boxing exhibition!"

Female (for now) Human 6 Barbarian

"Sounds good to me."

After breaking away from the guard, Brynn says to the group, "At least here we should be okay with one person on watch. I'll take the watch while you all sleep, and who should I wake up before I rest for a couple hours?"

Female Aasimar Cleric / 1

Kayla sighs, "There goes the chance to sleep in a real bed tonight. Oh well, I suppose the stables will be safe enough to sleep in at least. You can wake me up when you are ready to sleep Brynn. I like to watch to the sunrise anyway. Hopefully we can replenish our supplies quickly and possibly grab a decent meal before continuing on our journey." Kayla will walk her horse to the stables and prepare to bed down for the night.

M Human Level 6 Cavalier (Houndmaster)

Osslend smiles to the boy. "Boxing...one of my favorites. It's too bad we're in a hurry."

Once at the stables,Osslend will settle in with some hay as a bed. "In the morning, I do want to step into town long enough to get a bed roll.

male 1/2 Elf Sage Sor/Wiz 2 Gestalt

Eyeing the barn with disaproval Cecil says, "I suppose it's better than a sleep inducing magical campfire."

Cecil then say's "A ajuda" then waves his hand and says "Try to make this place presentable." The stable then starts to slowly clean itself.

As the room continues to clean itself Cecil digs into Owen's saddle bags and pulls out a full tea service set and begins to set it up on a makeshift table."I think we're close enough to civilization that there's no need to act like complete savages." Using a few minor magics Cecil soon has a pot of steaming tea brewed with a few accouterment. "Would anyone like tea this evening?"

Male Elf Monk 2/Ninja 4

"I'd love some tea. That spell there, that's quite useful" Shinami points to the broom slowly sweeping out the barn.

"A boxing match? In the middle of the supposed turmoil? Maybe it's to raise morale?" Shinami muses.

Female Aasimar Cleric / 1

Kayla shrugs, "This town isn't really in turmoil. At least we haven't heard any reports of werewolves around here. I'll also take some tea if you don't mind."

male 1/2 Elf Sage Sor/Wiz 2 Gestalt

As people ask for Tea Cecil makes a motion for those who wish to join him at the makeshift table where the tea service is set up. Though hay bales and such are you're only real choice other than the floor if you wish to sit.

Female Aasimar Cleric / 1

Too bad I don't have a teddy bear to pretend to give tea to. :)

Feeling on edge, Bryce eyes the young guard with suspicion, though he says nothing. When the group camps in the stables, he pokes arounhd in every corner, looking for anything out of place. It is some time before he is relaxed enough to accept a cup of tea from Cecil.

It's not paranoia when there was an assassination attempt recently and the most powerful man in the realm has decided we are an enemy...

Crunch:

Sense Motive (guard): 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (7) + 10 = 17
Kn(Local) (is it common to shut gates to all visitors after dark?): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (15) + 5 = 20

Bryce:

The guard want to let you in, but his orders are to keep the gate shut. Is is normal to lock the gates after dark. It is not normal to have only one guard, let alone a kid.

In the barn your search finds you a rusty pair of manacles (Broken Condition) and a sheaf of 20 silver headed arrows wrapped in dirty cloth.
