Welcome!

I always do my best to run a friendly game. I want people to have fun and everyone to be able to laugh when something crazy happens.

I try to run a reasonably fast game and like everyone to be able to post at least once a day. If you are going to be away from the game for a short period (such as attending a convention, on a short vacation, or needing to do some business travel), I would ask that you please post that here so everyone involved knows. Please also indicate if you have a preference for who runs your character.

Please have a profile displaying a brief overview of your character's current status. At the least it should include current/maximum hit points, stamina, resolve, AC, and saving throws.

In the character profile, please include a complete stat block. You may put it under a spoiler if you wish, but if you do so please put it under a single spoiler. I do not want it split across multiple spoilers.

You can find preformatted level 4 pregens for SFS that exist as part of the PBP GM Kit.

Please include botting instructions in your profile and a general tactics in case someone else needs to bot your character. It is alright if you put this in a separate spoiler from the stat block, but once again please don't split it over multiple spoilers.

In general, if we have been waiting for a character to post and it has been 24 hours, I will be looking to either bot that character myself or have someone else bot it for the player.

If there are rules questions, please post them in the discussion thread rather than interrupting the gameplay thread with rules debates.

Female Human

I just saw that this game was looking for players...I'd love to play the Envoy maybe? :)

I think I just grabbed the last spot on the sign up list.

Would like to play to try Obozaya. Haven't tried out a soldier yet.

Welcome!

I see you have already put your name on the spreadsheet. Go ahead and get the pregen Envoy and enjoy! Dot and delete in gameplay once you have an alias for your character.

Wow! That filled fast! I hadn't realized all the spots were full already.

Welcome, kuey! Spellcheck really hates your avatar name!

Go ahead and grab the Soldier. Enjoy!

Zerg Hydralisk Mad Engineer

Hey! I was lucky enough to snag a spot too. I haven't played this one yet, but did GM it in September. Is that alright with you GM Bret?

@McBugman

As long as you don't spoil anything for the other players, I'm fine with you playing. GMs should be allowed to play as well!

Zerg Hydralisk Mad Engineer

Beautiful, I agree and thank you!

I will play the Operative if no one had their heart set on them, otherwise I am also interested in the Mystic.

GM Poblano had some preformatted SFS pregens that he created and shared, and I liked the idea so much that I started up the Poblano Peppers and Friends PBP Conversion Project and invited volunteers to convert the pregens to BB code. I had about six dedicated people who worked all the way through the holiday season. Elinnea was our biggest dynamo, doing about half of them by herself, but everyone worked hard.

It was great.

Bret, can Charli offer your team some tea before they go into the Lorespire?

Hmm

Hmm

Let's wait for our last player to check in, then we can do that if you want.

Thanks for the more in-depth look into the creation of the BB-Coded pregens!

Let me know if your spot doesn’t fill. I have not yet had the chance to play this yet, though have run it 3-4 times.

I am going to give Wismac tomorrow to report in. If he hasn’t, then Silbeg will take his place.

I'm trying to create an alias for Obozaya but for the life of me, I can't find her image! Anyone happen to have stumbled upon one? Or is there not one?

Zerg Hydralisk Mad Engineer

Alas, I do not believe the Starfinder images have been loaded yet. Our Vesk are likely stuck with dragons, kobolds, and lizardfolk.

Wismac was the person originally signed up for the game before the first GM went missing, right? I'm already playing in another starfinder game in OutPost so if he comes back I'm okay dropping to make sure he can play.

Yes, Wismac was the person who originally signed up for the game before the first GM went missing. That is why I was waiting for them.

I have tried posting in the thread where they made the complaint and sending PMs to them. So far, no response. Best I can tell, he hasn't posted anywhere since Friday night.

Silbeg will take their place if they don't report soon.

In other news, I have links to what will be the Google Slides I will use for this scenario. Right now all there is there is a title page. If you want to add your icons to that page below the title, that would be great.

I will be filling in with more details once we get past the mission briefing. I expect to post that sometime this afternoon.

Edit to add: You will need to request permission to edit the slide. Please do so, I will grant it as the requests come in.

I checked with Silbeg.

You are in Wismac. Your choice of Keskodai or Altronus. See above for links to files that already have the BB Code for the pregens.

Elektra,

I have already promised Silbeg I would host a game after this was done.

Sorry would be away for a short vacation til 18 Mar, Sun. Still have access to Internet but posting might be slow. Please notify necessary.

It is getting late here, so I'll update tomorrow afternoon.

Sorry about the long delay.

Slide show now has a space map along with statistics for your ship. You may want to discuss what position each of you will normally take.

Altronus: Gunner or Captain
Iseph: Pilot, Engineer, Science Officer
Navasi: Any role, but best as Captain, Pilot or Science Officer
Obozaya: Gunner or Intimidation-based Captain
Quig: Engineer or Science Officer
Raia: Engineer, Science Officer or Pilot

You do not have to fill every position and you can switch positions at the start of each round.

I'll fill the group in on how I will be running Starship combat in PbP so that we don't have to serialize everyone's actions. It is going to require people using spoiler tags.

I will definitely let the ace pilot take the pilot role. I can start science officer and switch to another platform as needed.

Quick recap of starship combat, with PbP notes

There are five roles or crew positions that a character can fill for Starship Combat.

  1. Captain -- There can only be one captain. They can help their own ship or try to impede the enemy vessel via taunts. Skills uses are Diplomacy, Bluff, Intimidate or the skill used by any other position when aiding that crew position
  2. Pilot -- There can only be one pilot. All of their checks are Piloting. They are the ones that can do stunts and also maneuver the ship. They do the piloting check to determine which ship has to move first. Moving later is good because then you can react to the other ship's positioning.
  3. Gunner -- You can have as many Gunners as you have guns. Gunnery is based on your Dex modifier plus either BAB or ranks in pilot skill.
  4. Science Officer -- You can have as many or few Science Officers as you want. They always use Computers skill for their checks. They scan enemy vessels to find out about them, rebalance shields, and can target enemy vessel systems.
  5. Engineer -- You can have as many or few Engineers as you want. They always use Engineering skill for their checks. They boost systems or repair broken systems.

You pick what positions are filled by whom each round before making any Engineering checks in the Engineering phase. In my experience, it is common for a person to switch between Science Officer and Engineering, starting at Science Officer to find out about the enemy ship and switching to Engineering once there is any damage or you need a system boosted. You don't require a captain, at times it may be useful for the captain to swap over to Gunnery if you expect to have more guns in arc than gunners. It is generally a bad idea to go without a Pilot.

Each round of Starship Combat is Broken into three phases.

  • Engineering People can change positions. After any changes, all engineers on all ships act to boost or repair a system on their starship simultaneously.
  • Helm A piloting check is done for each ship. Ships act in order from lowest to highest value. Pilots and Science Officers act during this phase. The Science Officer can go before or after the Pilot has moved the ship.
  • Gunnery All ships fire at the same time and the results are tallied at the same time. Destroying the other ship doesn't prevent them from firing on your ship.

Modifiers to checks from the ship
On the ship you will be using (Tier 4 Pegasus) there are modifiers to certain rolls.
+4 Computers
+1 Piloting

Those modifiers are always there.

In addition, the ship's computer can aid with two checks each round. You have a Mk II Duonode Computer, so that gives +2 (Mk II) to two checks (Duonode). Those can be used for any checks except the initiative check done at the beginning of the Helm phase.

Adapting for PbP

Normally each phase is taken in order. Unfortunately this doesn't work well for PbP because of the difference in what times people can post. I usually have the captain assign the computer nodes, but if you want to use a different method please just agree on what that method is.

Rather than requiring that everyone act in sequence, I will allow people to post in any order but request that they put the dice rolls in spoilers.

Here is an example, using one of my characters.

---
Zeyram does his best to get better position against the enemy without giving them a good shot at his own ship.

Helm Pilot: Evading:
Initiative: 1d20 + 10 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 10 + 4 = 30
Evade maneuver: 1d20 + 10 + 4 ⇒ (5) + 10 + 4 = 19

---
If instead he were the primary gunner, it might look like this:

---
Zeyram requests one of the computer nodes to aid in his targeting.

Gunnery Turret: Shoot:
Turret: 1d20 + 2 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 2 + 3 + 2 = 18 Ranks in Pilot + Dex Mod + Computer
Light Particle Beam damage: 3d6 ⇒ (5, 1, 4) = 10

---

The secondary gunner would just indicate they use whatever gun is in arc. Hopefully either the Forward Light Particle Beam or the Starboard Light Laser Cannon. The Port Laser Net is a Point defense. You can't fire it beyond it's first increment, but it can fire against incoming missiles. When used for this defensive fire, it always has a modifier listed (+10 in this case) instead of the gunner's skill. It is a computer controlled defense.

---

Please note that the DCs for many of the tasks done in Starship Combat have changed. Please see this FAQ for the correct DCs.

---

Please look in the Starfinder Core Rule Book for a detailed list of the crew actions that your position can do. They start on pg. 322.

---

So, what questions do people have?

"Obozaya" Female N vesk mercenary soldier 4 | SP 32/32 HP 34/34 | RP 5/5 | EAC 21; KAC 23 | Fort +5; Ref +4; Will +4; +2 vs. fear | Init: +7 | Perc: +0, SM: +0 | Speed 35ft | Active conditions: None.

And if I don't remember wrong, the ship's AC and TL gets a bonus from the pilot's piloting ranks?

Think Obozaya has the highest gunnery check (+4 BAB, +3 Dex), so she'll take the turret. In many games I play, we often forget about the computer bonuses, so can I suggest that we assign the two bonuses by default. Then depending on the situation, it can be reassigned. Not because I'm the gunner, but I usually prefer to assign the bonus to the gunners by default because no in a starship combat, what ultimately ends the combat is whether you can hit the other ship. There are times when priority shifts, e.g. engineer in fixing the shields, though, but at the start of combat, I feel gunnery is more critical.

"Raia" Female LG damaya lashunta xenoseeker technomancer 4 | SP 5/20 HP 24/24 | RP 6/6 | EAC 16; KAC 16 | Fort +1; Ref +3; Will +4 | Init: +2 | Perc: +0, SM: +0 | Speed 30ft | Detect Thoughts 1/1; Spell Cache 1/1 | Spells: 1st 1/4; 2nd 2/3 | Active conditions: Invisibility.

I agree putting them on the guns should be the default unless we take damage or need some crazy maneuver.

Yes, both AC and TL get a bonus of the ranks in piloting.

The pilot also has an Evade action they can perform to improve it further.
