Brewslee throws himself behind whatever cover he can find. Falling prone he holds his knee trying to pull the spike out without causing more pain.
Seeing that it is not going to immediately come loose he focuses on staying as defensive as possible.
Correct. I have no Mage Armor currently.

GM Bold Strider |

@Baern: Who are you healing? Everyone seems to have moved away from you to find cover as you just fell to the ground where you were.
@Mu: Giving you partial cover, so you can fire off sling attacks. Sling is at a -2 for range increments.
Mu fires off a sling bullet as everyone dives for cover. Baern casts a healing spell and tries to find someone to aid, but he is prostrate and everyone ran to the hills, save the invisible elder Shu.
Mu's sling shot goes wide as another volley of spikes launches from the manticore's tail at the Pathfinders.

Bevek glances around at his fellow adventurers.
Why is everybody on the ground? Stand up and shoot your bows at this thing. Wait... are you telling me I'm the only one here with a bow? Sarenrae help us.
Bevek draws again and fires.

Another splintered spear breaks from the ground and hurtles at the manticore, this time flying much more accurately.
Shu appears, cackling like a madman, then vanishes again in another puff of smoke.
Splintered Spear + True strike - Range: 1d20 + 7 + 20 - 6 ⇒ (17) + 7 + 20 - 6 = 38

Shu moves over next to Malachite and springs his wand of infernal healing to use next round.

What is the current range on the manticore?

Missed that. Must admit I'm lost without a map. Will heal self, then.
Baern stands up and moves after the others as fast as his stubby legs will allow towards cover before dropping prone behind his shield again.
43/52

Gob pokes himself with his wand of infernal healing he started casting last round. "Lets see if we can get it closer," Gob says before sending a ray of fire in the creatures direction.

Bevek fires off another arrow, but misses this time. Shu's True Strike aids him in finding his target with his Splintered Spear, while Gob launches a fiery assault. Sadly, his Scorching Ray only grazes the beast, failing to do any meaningful damage.
Baern heals himself before jumping up and running over near Malachite and falling prone behind a rock and his shield.

Infernal Healing will activate on your next turn Malachite.

Damage: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 5, 3, 3) = 14
Gob's shot is way off balance and gets no where close to the creature. "I think I've made a huge mistake." He calls back to the others.
Moved out 30 feet toward the creature and dropped prone as a free action.

![]() |

Gob, I think we're on a cliff, so moving 30' toward the manticore would put you in thin air. Also, the range on scorching ray is 25' +5/2 levels. And I don't think you get multiple range increments with it. You might want to just hide behind a rock.
Shu moves to Brewslee and begins using his wand of infernal healing.

GM Bold Strider |

Gob readies a blast of fire should the beast get close as Mu fires off a rock at the beast and it soars past the beast.
Ever-invisible Shu begins the process to heal Brewslee as Gob and Malachite's wound slowly heal.
Malachite and Baern stay behind their rocks, unsure what to do.
The creature launches another salvo of attacks.
4d20 ⇒ (1, 8, 19, 9) = 37
1d7 ⇒ 3
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Mu's shoulder catches another spike as the creature roars, upset that six of the seven Pathfinders are still conscious. It roars once more before flying off, clearly unwillingly to sacrifice its life against the strong group.
"I think you did it! Great job Masters Mu and Shu. Us old guys sure know how to take care of beasts!" Hustavan shouts from behind his rock, next to Mu who didn't even realize he was there.

Shu grumbles something in Tien to Mu as he moves to heal others in the group with his infernal wand.
Looks like we will need to use the following number of charges from my infernal healing wand:
Shu 1
Mu 2
Malachite 1
Brewslee 1
Bevek 3
Baern 1
Gob 1

![]() |

Thanksh Shu Brewslee stands as he holds his temple sword ready in case the creature comes back.
His eye lazily watching the sky.

GM Bold Strider |

"Yeah. Never seen a manticore on this climb..." A lightbulb seems to go off in Hustavan's head. He moves toward the wizard and roughly grabs his robe, smelling a bit of the sleeve and rubbing it between his fingers.
"You got doused with pheromones, Apprentice Gob. That's what drew him in. Must have been when you fell in the pit and those bags exploded..." states the elderly man.
"If this'un takes a bath and thoroughly washes his clothes, then we should be able to camp here for the night. Not sure we have much choice as it's another six to eight hours until the next viable campsite."

![]() |

Brewslee roars with laughter at Hustaven's comment. He walks over slapping Gob on the back. Perhapsh if the beast hash itsh way with Gob it with shaunter off and go to bed and leave ush alone.

![]() |

"Worry not about the manticore. It will likely bleed to death before it can come back to bother us."
Pretty sure a manticore can't apply the heal skill to itself to stop the bleed damage Shu's splintered spear gave it.

![]() |

Bevek gets up and dusts himself off.
Thanks for the healing. You know, manticores are known to hybridize, but I wouldn't think it would work with a half-orc.

![]() |

Gob goes behind a rock to disrobe and finish magically cleaning any spots he missed. After he is finished the half-orc dresses and returns the the group. "Really wish I had that fly spell." he grumbles under his breath. "So now that I am no longer Manticore bait we should be safe now?"
Ready to rest, recover some spells and continue climbing.

![]() |

Shaking his head as the wise masters cut up after a near death experience for the whole group, Malachite only wonders when he will be so brave as these noteworthy gentlemen.
After the infernal healing does its tricks, Mal will be back to full HP. Still fatigued though, I guess.

"So now that I am no longer Manticore bait we should be safe now?"
"From Manticore humping leg? Yes." Shu says as he resets his wand back into his wrist sheath. He then mutters something in Tien under his breath.

![]() |

"Considering the distance it stayed at I do not think it had leg humping in mind. Just spike throwing and if spike throwing is part of the Manticore mating process I feel bad for the females."

![]() |

Even Baern chuckles at the references to the dirty deeds of manticores and Gob. "T'least it would not be trying to kill us while it bred. Fret not, Gob. It likely thought ye were merely an opposing male. Perhaps we may reason with it."

GM Bold Strider |

The next morning, as Malachite is putting out the fire, he discovers a long-buried satchel under the remains of one of the handful of fire pits cluttered beneath the overhang, it’s leather brittle and burnt from the heat of a past fire.
The satchel contains a masterwork silver dagger and 12 bloodstones worth 50 gp each. It also contains a series of journals written in Varisian detailing the journeys of a family of caravan drivers. The final entry in the journals details the first two days of a venture by the caravan’s most skilled hunters up Antios’s Crown. Details of manticore lairs, harpy nests and rogue earth elementals seems to have plagued the large party. Rampant death seems to be the overarching theme of the journals.
"Shall we continue, Masters Mu and Shu? Show these youngins the spry capabilities of their elders?" Hustavan beams, seemingly still full of life and vigor.
---Four hours into your climb (Fort DC 32 or Fatigued)---
The clear air provides the first unobstructed view of the massive statues and mausoleums on the mountain’s peak, still a good half-day’s travel away. Now more than halfway up the mountain, the air is thin and the wind bitterly cold. The narrow path clings closely to the near-vertical rock face as it winds around crags and outcroppings, slowly climbing the massive edifice.
The path to travel has become much more narrow, requiring a single file line.
What is the order of progression?
