Making a knowledge check against them might yield a clue. It's knowledge arcana to identify them, and if someone identifies them to Lauriel, she can comment about them. Or she could take off her mask.

Exiel identifies the creatures as war-trained (i.e. advanced) cryohydras, and from his experience, they're average at hitting, but are deadly mainly because they have so many chances of hitting. They are also capable of pouncing on an enemy and biting with all their heads in the process. And they breathe cold.

Lauriel is able to also tell you that they heal very quickly and although their heads can be chopped of relatively easily, two more will grow back shortly after. They can be killed by chopping off all their heads if done quickly enough. And these variants are immune to cold but vulnerable to fire. They are tough and pretty quick, but their wills are weak in comparison. They have good eyes that can see in the dark and see well in low light, as well as an incredibly sharp sense of smell.

Lauriel still has one more question she can ask. You can ask that later if you want.

Nothing comes to mind at the moment, unless someone wants to ask Lauriel a more specific question.

"Let's see whether I can draw them further away from the tower and closer to the bastion."

With that thought in mind, Exiel descends to the ground and casts divine favour on himself, then levels his lance at the hydras.

I should still have the tongues spell on me, so they should be able to understand me.

"By Torag, you two are UGLY. Come at me. I'll rip you to shreds."

By the way, guys, don't worry about including me in any fire-based AoE if you need to. I should be able to make the save, and I cast energy resistance against all 4 elements.

Nienna Telemnar wrote:

With the hound archons helping, you will need one more round. The drake required a 3man crew, so you were taking awhile to aim. You can fire next round, or you can use your bow instead and let the hound archons operate the firedrake.

Lavode's questions:
1. The siege engine needs to be adjacent to the bastion. At the moment it's not getting any closer since the hydras were going to try to eat Exiel, and one of them is now blinded.
2. Hydras are not natural climbers.
3. There are no troops in the siege tower or around the siege tower that you can see.

Lavode finishes his second summoning spell and directs his hound archons to the siege engines. Two of them help Alden, Nienna and Lauriel. The other two go to the large ballista, but they will need one more person to help them operate the machine. Meanwhile, Lavode casts a cloud of glittering dust over one of the hydras.

Nienna fires on the blinded hydra, who hisses is pain...but how much pain?

Nienna, do you have items or abilities that allow you to sneak attack enemies with concealment and more than 30ft away?

Exiel descends to the ground and challenges the hydras, one of which looks at him hungrily. Alden and Lauriel and 42 work the siege engines. The firedrake is now ready! Lavode, I'll let you fire this one.

The heavy ballista will be ready next round. Alden or 42 can do the roll for this one when the time comes.

The blinded hydra hisses angrily and moves forward slowly. It tries to shake off the blindness while its wounds knit together at a frighteningly quick rate!

It manages to shake off the glitterdust, and it now looms over Exiel menacingly.

I believe it was well lit when she fired, I wouldn't think it should still have concealment.
On a related note, opinions when I have asked are about evenly divided on whether or not 'persistent' should apply to the ongoing saves of a spell such as glitterdust. I'm ok with however you want to handle it.

Nienna had lighting on the bastion, but the hydras are beyond the light sources on the bastion, so they have 20% miss chance and concealment. But I correct myself. Due to their height, they are just barely within sneak attack range. Serves them right for being huge.

After reading the feat again, I think it should apply to all saves, though it also strikes me as pungent blue cheese.

second save: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (7) + 6 = 13

The hydra readies itself to attack Exiel, not realising that it is actually facing the wrong way and that it is completely mistaken in its belief that it can see.

No roll needed for the firedrake, just damage. It's like a spell, just determine whether you want a 30ft cone or 60ft line. 60ft line will reach the siege tower but neither hydra, or just one of the hydras and no one else. 30ft cone will get both hydras and Exiel. Exiel has given consent to be in the aoe, so it will not count as pvp.

Is it asking too much to be allowed to use the cool monsters for a few more rounds?

I'll fast forward the action a little, since there are no enemies to compete with for initiative for now.

The fire washes over the combatants on the icy field as the hound archon siege team sprays burning alchemical fluid over them. The cryohydras hiss in agony, but Exiel barely notices the flames. He drives his lance into the chest of one of the hydras, causing it to rear up in pain. Seeing an opening, he plunges his lance into where he thinks the hydra's heart might be, and he guesses truly as the barbed lance-head rips into the hydra's critical organs and mangles them beyond what fast-healing can remedy.

The other hydra, already wounded by Nienna and the flames, falls to the ground, and the hasted Exiel finishes the job with another stab at the base of the hydra's many necks.

As the hydras hiss in their death throes, a door opens at the base of the siege tower, and several triaxian warriors start to pour out, screaming in fury. Exiel realises that for all his defences, even he cannot hope to fight off such numbers on his own, and he is forced to fly back to the bastion. Fortunately, without the hydras, the triaxians have no real effective way of moving the siege tower, and you are able to use the siege weapons on the bastion to set the siege tower on fire and significantly damage it with several well-placed ballista bolts.

You can heal or re-buff at your leisure during this time as you catch your breath.

About one minute later, a sqaud of triaxians wearing Spurhorn's colours arrive through the trapdoor. They appear to be breathing heavily.

If the enemy troops don't immediately run away, Lavode will lay a black tentacles on their densest mass of troops or obvious officers.

Translations courtesy of Exiel/Lauriel/Lavode.

"Thank the gods you were here. Things would have turned ugly if that siege tower had reached our walls. Our dragonkin and their riders are doing the best they can, but some of the enemy fliers are slipping past and dropping ground troops behind our walls! Even without the influx of troops from the siege tower we're having some trouble in the courtyard. Can't imagine what it'd be like if that siege tower got close!"

No sooner has he finished speaking when a deafening shout rings out in the courtyard, followed by a bright flash of lightning. One of the triaxian troopers calls out, "sir! Over by the blockhouse! They've got a mage in there. They look like they're trying to smash the door!"

The first triaxian's eyes widen, and if his face was not covered by fur you'd probably be able to see the colour drain from his cheeks. "They're trying to get to the lower levels! Most of our living quarters are below ground! We have wounded, sick and young are in there!"

He looks at your group earnestly. "If you weren't here, I'd probably go down there with my team and try to stop them, orders be damned. But we're siege engineers first, and warriors only out of necessity. If you could see to that mage, we would be of more use here. Please hurry!"

The blockhouses are the square buildings labelled B4 in the big map, and the siege engineers are looking at the one closest to you. If you go to the edge of the bastion, you can see a trixian mage and two warriors close to the nearest blockhouse. They are fighting the nearby ground troops in the courtyard and driving them away from the blockhouse.

Post what preparations you made after the hydras were defeated, and then what you want to do about this new development.

If you have any more buffs or healing to do in the one-minute of spare time, post it in your next post.

You make your way down the bastion and throw open the door. The courtyard is in chaos, with the bodies of triaxians, dragonkin, frost drakes and other more exotic creatures littering the ground. From the mangled state of the bodies, more than a few of them fell from the battle raging in the skies above you. A short distance away, you see the invaders that had caused the engineers such alarm. A beefy looking triaxian stands before the door to the blockhouse with a warhammer of dark metal raised to strike. Close by are a robed triaxian with lightning crackling along his fingertips and another burly triaxian who is wiping a large sword off on the corpse of Spurhorn soldier.

The one minute was after the hydras were taken down but before the engineers arrived. You could have taken shots at some of the people running around, but that would have expended your resources without really affecting the main flow of the battle. The AP directs the party to critical points in the combat that affect the flow of the battle, such as stopping the siege tower, saving the siege weapons, and preventing the guys trying to break into the residential quarters, which you are doing now.

I had moved all of you to the ground floor for convenience sake, but now that I think of it, you guys have options for getting down quicker or attacking from range, so I have moved all of you back to the top of the bastion. It will take a full round to move through the trapdoor, down the stairs of the tower and then out the door on the ground floor. Nienna, I will resolve your round with you at the top level. The good news is that the enemies are still flat-footed, the bad news is that your first two rolls will miss regardless.

Nienna seizes the initiative and fires at the mage. Unfortunately for her, however, Exiel is not the only mage around who layers himself with defensive spells. Her first arrow is deflected by a shield of force, the second glances off a layer of force armor and the third bounces off his unnaturally tough skin. Only the fourth arrow manages to find its way, painfully, into the soft vulnerable organs in his gut.

The martials are clad in full plate.
None of the other airborne or ground-based enemies are taking an interest in you at the moment, especially since you are now at the top of the bastion.

42 and Alden begin to race down the stairs, and Exiel being extremely confident of his survivability goes straight down to engage the enemies.

fort: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16 Oh ffs.

Once again, Exiel finds himself incredibly empowered as his spell drains a large amount of strength from the triaxian warrior trying to hammer down the door.

The triaxian curses as he suddenly struggles with the weight of his armor.

The Darkness (as named by Nienna) casts a spell, and suddenly he and his allies appear to move alot faster!

The weakened triaxian still swings the hammer at the door, alot less forcefully than he could have before. But the door still shudders under the blows.

Sorry Lavode, I changed their actions a little. The sorcerer cast a cone of cold over all of you, so you need to make a reflex save and see how much of your protection was removed.

Sorry, that's because I hallucinate when I post before going to bed after a long night shift. The action was changed from cone of cold to haste. The stat block for this sorcerer referred to another sorcerer, but their tactics were different.

Just so your roll is not wasted, and because this was a GM error, you will auto-succeed at your next saving throw.

Lavode experiences a brief vision of an imaginary cone of cold and dodges it perfectly, and as the vision fades he wonders whether it was a glimpse of the future or a random act by the gods of chaos and madness.

It just barely confirmed. With the two warriors stuck in the pit and suffering armor check penalties from their full plate, I'm going to call this one over.

Before anyone else can act, Nienna fires 4 arrows into the sorcerer - one in the gut, one in the shoulder, one in the groin and one in the throat. It's not clear which of the last 2 killed the sorcerer.

With their heavy armour, the triaxian barbarians have little hope of climbing out before Nienna strolls over to shoot them dead, and have no chance of making it past Alden, 42 and Exiel standing by the pit anyway. The party disposes of them at their leisure.

Loot:

2 x elixir of green dragon breath
4 x war paint of the terrible visage
2 x +1 full plate
2 x +1 heavy shield
2 x +1 bastard sword
6 x javelins
1 x adamantine warhammer
1 x amulet of natural armor +1
1 x ring of protection +1
1 x cloak of resistance +2
1 x necklace of fireballs (type 2)
1 x potion of cure serious wounds
1 x scroll of dimension door
1 x scroll of whispering wind

Some of those items are the same as the ones you got off triaixian sorcerer you killed on your way to Spurhorn. It appears to be some sort of standard-issue to the Drakelands mages. (Actually it's more like a result of stat-blocks being re-used.)

With the door successfully protected, the entrance to the lower residential quarters remains secure, and the fighting in the courtyard rapidly dies down as your swift and decisive victory over the infiltration team severely damages the morale of the invaders. You can spend the next couple of minutes helping to shoot at stragglers or stab at the demoralised invaders, but it will not matter in the grand scheme of things. Your actions have already greatly determined the course of the battle up to this point, and it is going well for Spurhorn. (+4 victory points)

The battle in the skies above appears to be going well too. With the Drakelands' ground troops unable to utilise their siege tower, their only means of entry is through air support, but Spurhorn's aerial forces have been freed to concentrate their efforts on keeping the aerial attackers at bay, and with the courtyard and underground quarters secure, the ground artillery has been able to focus on supporting the air troops, to great effect.

Soon the skies above Spurhorn clear, you see the defenders of Spurhorn re-form their circle above Spurhorn's walls, while the frost drakes and dragonkin of the drakelands pull back and hover some distance away.

DC20 sense motive or knowledge history:

You either perceive from their bodily cues or your knowledge of historical war tactics tells you that the Drakelands forces have not retreated, but have instead only pulled back to regroup and are waiting for some new development. The battle is not done yet. In fact, the Drakelands army's next move is going to be something big. If any of you make this check and tell the others, you can all ready actions for when the next big thing happens.

Another 4 minutes have passed. Do a post about what you do in those 4 minutes, whether it is casting spells, putting on new armor, resting, or taking pot-shots at the enemy forces. Or even something entirely ridiculous. It's up to you.

Several more frost drakes and invading dragonkin fall as they pull back to reform their lines. There is a brief silence as the two airborne armies face off with each other, as if each side were waiting for the other's move.

But it is the Drakelands' forces that act first. A blue Drakelands dragonkin emerges from their ranks and bellows something none of you are quite able to work out. Right on cue, several dragonkin-riding spellcasters conjure a bank of fog that cover the expanse of sky between the two forces. A few moments later, a score of smaller, roughly human-sized draconic creatures fly out from fog towards the Spurhorn's aerial guard, keening ominously.

And then it happens.

At first you think it might be some kind of bombardment, as several heavy objects begin to rain down upon Spurhorn and the defenders below. But one of the objects falls rather close to the party, shattering to pieces as it hits the ground, and you realise that they are in fact statues. Statues of triaxians and even a few dragonkin, their faces contorted in horror as they try to avert their eyes from something. And you certainly did not see any of Spurhorn's defender or the newly-arrived winged creatures carrying any heavy masonry..

knowledge arcana DC 17:
They have been petrified! Those medium-sized creatures have some sort of ability to turn creatures to stone in large numbers! Those things are probably dracolisks, a cross between a basilisk and a black dragon. You get a question for every 5 points by which you beat the DC.

The sudden development throws the Spurhorn aerial guard off-balance for a moment, and in that moment, the Drakelands sorcerers dismiss their fog, and the remainder of the Drakelands' aerial forces seize the opportunity to converge once more Spurhorn's defense forces.

All of this happens in the space of a few seconds, but the battle in the skies is fully joined once more.

Thronull's crossbowmen are the first to recover from the initial shock, as the grizzled triaxian's voice rings out from the towers of the central keep. A cloud of crossbow bolts flies out from the towers and the gardens on the roof of the central keep, bringing down two of the smaller creatures in an instant. The blue Drakelands dragonkin commander however quickly directs two of the nearest of those creatures towards the towers, and follows close behind them.

Nienna, it is at this point that you are able to take your readied shot. They will be flat-footed, and you can choose to take a free shot at either the blue dragonkin or one of the smaller winged creatures. Once they land on the roof of the central keep, however, they are no longer in your line of sight. Exiel, you can also cast your spell at this time.

As the trio descend upon the roof of the keep, a score of screams issue from that general direction. Commander Pharamol's voice sounds out from Exiel's general area, and he quickly gives the translation.

"They're going after the crossbowmen! I don't know whether they know that Jarilne is coordinating our forces from the command room in the Eastern tower either, but we can't take that chance. The rest of us have our hands full up here. You need to get to the gardens and stop those things!"

You can decide how you want to get to the roof. You can go via the Eastern tower - that was where you were lodged the night before, and you know which door leads to the gardens from there. If you can all find a way to fly, you can get there a little quicker.

And I'll give 42 some time to get back as well before we go into initiative again.

Grand Lodge

extra info if you get at least 22 on the knowledge arcana check in the previous post:
Usually a dracolisk's petrification can be reversed by applying dracolisk blood on the petrified creature, so the petrification is completely reversible if the dracolisk is killed. When the petrification happens to an airborne creature, however, the fall usually shatters the petrified creature, turning it into a very permanent death AND turning them into bombardment-projectiles against their own allies at the same time. It's a nasty, nasty tactic.

To avoid confusion: Commander Pharamol is not physically near you, but he is using a message spell to communicate with you briefly whilst in the sky. Exiel and Lauriel are the only ones who he knows will comprehend him at the moment, so he targeted Exiel.
