Wonderful! Let's write a fun story together ;^)
Time to start thinking about the numbers then... if Angie's going to roll with a greatsword-wielding barbarian, I'd have here an opportunity to rework my old Oracle into more of a caster-based mystic and less the blood-soaked divine gish since two of the same are a bit much in one party... that could be fun as well, since the basic concept of a blood-soaked tribal shaman would survive.
Alenka Farkasova |
So I had PM'd about reworking Goggles...I had forgotten you had played Mira! If that's still okay then I will get to work on that. Goggles is essentially an alchemist...chirurgeon (some more healing) / vivasectionist (some more oddity).
I would roll her back to level 1 and rework her background a bit. And conform to your character requirements.
Jenni Skullsplitter |
Greetings!
I'm also happy to rework Jenni. I'd actually forgotten about her being a bloodrager. I'm happy to rework her into another class as well. Thrym was so wonderful; if you want to bring him back as-is, the Jenni can be slightly less blood-soaked.
Jenni Skullsplitter |
PS, @Ancalima, can you open the gameplay tab for us to dot into? I don't know how else to get this thread to show up on my campaign page, which the one I compulsively regularly check.

No worries, I was thinking a Spirit Guide Oracle could be fun as well (need to get to 3rd level for the archetype to kick in, but it seems to add a nice bit of flexibility and fits the concept).
GM Ancalima |
Yep, welcome Vard!
I'm going to shoot Jibril a reminder PM to see if he is still interested. If not I will reach out to someone else. Other than that we should be in good shape. I will probably start reviewing characters more in earnest over the weekend.

Okay, I'll roll Jenni back to 1st and rework the history a little bit.
Haha, yeah probably for the best to not have two amnesiacs running around the carnival.

Sorry, just noticed a message was waiting for me.
Hi everyone,
I'm working on the fluff but feel like the crunch is well balanced. Here's a connect:
Fain the Under-Gard'ner
Basic Fluff - Moved to Illurian two years ago after a flood ruined business in his home town. Works as the under-gardener either for the town or for some great family. Wants to be a genius but is only a little bright. He sees mysteries where there are none all of the time - overactive imagination. Others see him as the person to call on when your family pet goes missing. Quite friendly, well liked mostly, so he knows a lot of the town gossip.
Likes gardening but loves animals more. Studies them as an extensive hobby from hunter's blinds. Has a large collection of animal taxidermy with write-ups in several journals - pseudo-scientific. His extensive study of animals colours the way he looks at people - sees them as a collection of instincts and basic needs.
Probably got third place in the town fair archery contest - novices division. Known as a talented leather-worker and taxidermist.
GM Ancalima |
So, there's no rush for everyone to get their characters 100% complete. Originally, this campaign wasn't slated to even be recruited until mid next week.
However, how comfortable are people feeling with their character fluff? If everyone is feeling pretty good about where they are with their character's personalities/ background and people are interested in getting things rolling, you guys can probably start RPing/introducing characters in the gameplay thread. The intro of the module is more RP and low pressure skill challenges, so finalizing crunch over the next few days really shouldn't be a worry. What do you guys think?
Thrym Thyrsson |
Sounds good... I have been running circles with several options of the build, but the fluff is good - could well go for an intro post. Will you set the scene for us? Or if the adventure starts when we are all gawking at the wonders of the Carnival, do you want something from just before that, perhaps ending in our characters deciding to go check out the festivities?
'Fain' Phainopepla Grassbottom |
I'm up for starting but no rush if anyone wants more time. I'm happy with my build if you have no concerns Ancalima. I've also written my background up as a series of five short letters. Please let me know if they feel too etherial and you'd like something more concrete. Or if you'd like to change any details. I'm new and made things as ambiguous as possible so that the 'facts' fit in.
GM Ancalima |
So, based off of the info in the first gameplay post, I was thinking that the first post for your characters would be something along the lines of each of you describing your characters appearance and describing your arrival to Illsurian (or if the character is already in Illsurian, describe their reaction to the carnival's arrival). Then once everyone is introduced and on their way to the carnival, I planned to give some more descriptions as to what you find there and get the story going in earnest. Essentially, the plan was to ease in a bit slower, since people are still working on their characters. However, if you guys want to skip straight to being at the carnival and do introductions there, that would be fine. I can post the next gameplay post.
@Fain: I'll read up when I get home, but up sure it's fine. I'm not really a stickler for format as long as the characters personality gets across.
Alenka Farkasova |
Hey to everyone. Looking forward to playing with you all. I take it the elven sorcerer dropped out or did I read that wrong from recruitment?
I think Alenka's crunch is done - still need to tweak her fluff but I hope to have that done by tomorrow.
GM Ancalima |
I take it the elven sorcerer dropped out or did I read that wrong from recruitment?
The person who dropped was a different player, but I the sorcerer's player has been MIA from the boards and didn't respond to my PM. They were a new player, so I'm guessing they gave up on checking the boards.
I think we are good with our five person party though. You guys have most of the important bases covered (healing, face, disabling traps). You skew a more towards melee than spell focused, but I don't think that will screw you over in this particular module.
Jenni Skullsplitter |
I'm still working on fluff and crunch, though I hope to have it done by Sunday or Monday. I can also have a first post up by then.
Thrym Thyrsson |
Right, I'm happy enough with my build - working on an intro post now...
Thrym Thyrsson |
Oh yeah... anyone want to be spooked by the army of ancestral spirits Thrym drags along, the trait "Spirit Sense" might lead to fun RP opportunities ;^)
Alenka Farkasova |
Alenka will find them fascinating more than scary but that should work for RP opportunities just as well. Just be prepared for a lot of questions and probably a request for your blood :)

Problem here is that the spirits aren't normally visible... but if nothing else, Thrym's no doubt frequent Sacred Council uses do allow them to interact with the material world to some degree, so that would, at the very least, be observable by others as a kind of poltergeist activity ;^)
'Fain' Phainopepla Grassbottom |
Is there a way to remove Jibril from the 'current players' list? Sorry, my ignorance of the posting mechanics has him receiving discussion thread posts.
Vard Pendengas |
Dang, there are no convenient traits to get Climb as a class skill.
My crunch is good now. Posting intro post in a second.
Luk Luk Eaglefin |
Hello, I am still interested in this. Sorry for the late reply I had a family vacation last week and haven't been connected online for a bit. I should be plenty good to go though. Still staying with Luk Luk was a fireworks addicted abolitionist sorcerer.
It seems funny to me as far as combinations go.
And ancestor spirits are trailing Thrym? Luk Luk will probably want to ask them questions through Thrym then. Good annoying RP opportunity I smell in the future.

Inner Sea Primer had the Tribesman Trait that gave a +1 trait bonus on a skill and made it a class bonus. Skill was restricted to Climb, Survival, or Swim. Just as a suggestion if you are still looking.

Alright then, going to fake language translations with subtitles at the end in a Spoiler. I actually knew a player who wrote out their Osiriani PCs name in Egyptian hieroglyphics.
Actually, I found a "Common to Draconic" generator: http://draconic.twilightrealm.com
I can probably find a Tolkien Elven to English one for elf language. Actually wait minute...Nope on Tolkien but I did find others. Want me to post the translators I find for other languages?
Thrym Thyrsson |
Problem is if several people want to use the same language but both decide to use different generators... that begins to look silly rather quickly. That's why I usually don't bother with translations and instead just signify somehow when something is being said in a non-common tongue.
Skald is an exception here, since no-one else in the party speaks it (with the exception of a surprise NPC...), so it's easy enough to manage.
'Fain' Phainopepla Grassbottom |
I do like the idea of not being able to read a spoiler - to have the choice. Being truly ignorant of what Thrym is saying has been a nice element of reading the posts. But I also like having the opportunity to read the language - knowing doesn't really detract from playing or being able to fane ignorance.
'Fain' Phainopepla Grassbottom |
On a side note, I've been using Yiddish for Halfling. I'm curious about Yiddish and it's relationship to European languages (ie. German, which I also cannot speak). I also think it fits well with a rustic quality I'd like Halfling to have.
Vard Pendengas |
I was curious about that! I plugged some of the things into google translate but it didn't pick up the correct language.
When I played a tongue oracle in an inperson game, I used random thematic words for the language: eg. Terran = "Rocks, ground! Earth rocks rocks dirt burrow." That sort of thing can avoid the need for consistent translators, although it's probably more amusing in person.
I'm fine with "<bracket>" here, especially for mundane conversations (and extra especially if I'm on my phone), but it's nice to have an option to avoid accidentally reading information that could be important.

Nice thought - I'll keep that in mind.

@Alenka: Regarding rolling creature knowledge again.
Short answer: No
Long answer: I generally treat knowledge rolls as a one time deal. The result reflects that you are either familiar or unfamiliar with the topic. The two most common exceptions to this would be:
1. If your previous roll was based on hearsay, you can reroll upon actually seeing the subject. (Ex: Fain describes a giant lizard to you. You're not sure what he's talking about. But when you see it you can reroll to realize it's a Monitor Lizard).
2. You have spent time researching the subject since the last roll.
However in this case you saw the creature and were unfamiliar. Fain identifying it doesn't change that. Otherwise every successful knowledge check could trigger a series of reroll...and ain't nobody got time for that...
Warden73 |
Short answer seemed a little long
And cool on the usage of Yiddish. There is precedent for your example of Terran too. IIRC, in Discworld Trolls had 50 words for types of granite but one word for ALL plants (flower/tree/weed/cactus were all the same word).
Another option for the whole languages thing is just post in discussion that you are using real world Language X as Pathfinder Language Y. Or post the link to the fictional language translator.
To avoid hypocrisy I'll do the latter now. For my recent post in Goblin I used this English into Eberron Goblin translator: http://www.screwytruths.com/Goblin.html
'Fain' Phainopepla Grassbottom |
I've had game runners who wanted perception to find tracks and tracking to read them. I like the straight up survival roll. It's tidier.
