I'm going to say no to the emergency force sphere. You had no idea what was going on or if something was actually attacking you. Should I assume Exiel uses EFS the next time anything attacks him? The dex damage is from your flesh turning ashen and numb around the wound you suffered.

Exiel's spell grants him uncanny vision but fails to reveal his invisible attacker.

GM: What height are the dragons at now and are they still flying?

@Purs: That's fine as long as it doesn't require a bunch of retconning at this point.

@Rhon: The dragons are at various heights depending on who they are attacking. They have 10 foot reach with their bite. The one attacking Rhon is 15 feet off the ground. Rhon could attack it with a reach weapon.

Without actually seeing the creature Ralph cannot be certain but he's familiar with several monsters that deaden and calcify flesh on contact. The dreaded cockatrice immediately comes to mind.

He pummels one of the dragons leaving it battered and bloodied but the beast refuses to yield.

Yeah that thing that hit me was no cockatrice. I've fought those things before, and they're small and iirc you get a save against them.
This thing had no save vs his ability?

Thanks Purs.

Rhon, might not want to overextend that far, mate. We might need to pull back to the tunnel, but we can't if you're out there on your own.

Exiel raises his emergency force sphere to block the incoming bite, and grins a bloodied grin as the dragon's teeth are stopped by his force barrier.

"I don't think so. But I did forget that I do have a little doo-dad that will help identify my unseen assailant... I do owe the doggie a 'treat' after all."

Exiel activates his hand of glory to gain see invisibility.

Let's see what we've got here. BTW is there any way to get Purs into my EFS when I cast it? And did we see those dragons casting true strike?

In the future, please give me specific cases where you plan to use EFS. I know we’re dealing with the nature of PBP but it’s something you have to use before you’re aware of what’s hitting you. Exiel wouldn’t have been aware that he had a truestriked vital strike coming his way. Should I assume that, from now on, Exiel uses EFS whenever he’s attacked? In this case, that dragon would still have his true strike.

Since Purs is adjacent you’re welcome to include him in the EFS is he wants to be included. We’re waiting on new actions from him anyway.

Yes, the dragons cast true strike the first round as they approached. Would that have changed your actions?

Purs is up.

If I saw a dragon casting true strike I definitely would have used EFS as he attacked me... Especially since I suspect I was already vital striked earlier as well, and for more than 1/2 my hp.

In general, if I identify a dangerous spell with spellcraft or know an enemy has a particularly dangerous effect incoming, I'd use EFS, especially since I'd taunted the dragons specifically to try to draw them into melee while I wasn't fighting defensively, and had already been smacked for more than half my hp in a single whack. Basically the circumstances I am in are going to matter, including current hp, what I know about the attack and whether or not I am fighting defensively.

Right now nothing changes. I'm blocking the attack on me with EFS and including Purs in it if he wants. And I'm still using my amulet this turn to get see invis to try to find the invisible attacker.

I'll accept the EFS. Sorry for the confusion on the dragons position. Busy week at work

Got it. From now, whenever you’re being attacked I’ll confirm EFS with you before resolving attacks.

With his second spell Exiel reveals the threat that hit him – another dragon. This one is much bigger and much older than the horse-sized ones outside his force-bubble. It’s massive form is blurred by illusionary magics.

Post incoming.

In general if I am at full hp, fighting defensively and to my knowledge the enemy does not have true strike, I'm not going to use EFS. Here it was a combination of being at under 1/2 hp from a single attack, not knowing what had hit me and seeing them cast true strike. For all I knew it was another of these dragons with improved invis (as opposed to apparently a much bigger one). The circumstances will matter.

It would help me identify circumstances where Exiel would consider EFS if you let us know when we see enemies casting spells. Spells like true strike or a held touch spell will naturally influence my decision. =)

"Guys, there's another dragon here! Much bigger and I presume older. He's invisible and I think he's also cast a blur spell!"

Exiel will describe it as best he can. In particular the size and colour.

Purs cast bless, though I think if he is in the force bubble it will only get me, him and his doggie.

"Let me guess, that would be mommy over there?"

I agree context matters. What you consider powerful/dangerous might be different from me. In the interest of not indirectly making EFS more powerful than it already is and not denying you key opportunities to use it, it’s better we stop the action when it comes to attacks against Exiel. I suggest you authorize someone to make the call on EFS/Not EFS in your stead when you’re away from the computer for an extended period of time.

Exiel recognizes the spell on the dragon as mirror image, not blur.

Earl’s maneuver, while spectacular, is clumsy and he sails through the air without grabbing hold of the dragon beneath him. Falling Damage: 3d6 ⇒ (3, 3, 1) = 7

Intrigued by the notion of a dwarf-shaped meal, the wyrms stop flinging magma in favor of directly attacking Rhon. The further one double moves.

Bite: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (16) + 17 = 33
Damage: 2d8 + 10 ⇒ (5, 7) + 10 = 22
Fire Damage: 1d6 ⇒ 1

Finding Exiel and Purs outside their reach, two of the dragons break away to attack Earl. Two continue attacking Table-Ralph. The last takes to the air and reapplies its true strike.

Ralph and Earl can take AoOs.

I will just tell you whatever spells are being cast if you can reasonably detect the casting.

Your fireball is a bit large. I adjusted your template down to 20' radius. Also, the dragons aren't at the same height. The ones that were attacking your construct are 25' off the ground. The ones attacking Earl are 15' off the ground. I don't think you're going to be able to hit all four.

Feral Since I cannot get the dragons in my blast yet, I will instead use a standard action to posses the statue that my body is melded in and stand up.

Ralph's stone body collapses under the dragons' attacks, sending his consciousness back into his original body. He projects his consciousness into the statue his body is melded with and rises to his new feet.

Two of the smaller dragons reapply their true strike while two others fly into the hallway to attack Ralph's new body. The one that previously cast true strike flies down to attack Exiel only to be stymied by another force bubble.

Exiel burn another EFS spell slot. Ralph you can take an AoO against one of the two dragons in the hallway. Did that body take any damage in the previous fights?

Vital Strike vs Statue-Ralph: 1d20 + 17 + 2 - 3 ⇒ (9) + 17 + 2 - 3 = 25

Ralph smashes the uninjured red dragon and lets them destroy his stone body. He chuckles to himself as his consciousness once again returns to his body and the stone around his body crumbles.

"Good timing," he sneers as he spits a mouthful of blood on the floor and waits for a brief moment.

Feral: Delay. Let the big dragon act first. What is the elevation of the two dragons in the tunnel? Where is the older red dragon? Exiel should be able to tell me his location when he dimension doors to me.

The dragons in the hallway are 25 feet off the ground. The bigger dragon is on the map now.

The invisible dragon circles in the air, watching Exiel's force bubble closely.

Purs, Rhon, and Exiel are up.

Coming out of delay.

That should be two dead dragons. Orange took an attack of opp from me and blue ate a full attack from me earlier.

Feral: How high is the hallway?

I appreciate the frequent reminders but I'm aware of the dragons' cold vulnerability.

Reflexes: 2d20 ⇒ (2, 4) = 6

Chilled to their very bones, the frozen remains of the two dragons in the hallway crash to the ground.

The ceiling in the hallway is 20 feet high but it becomes shorter gradually going back that direction.

Lauriel emerges from her tattoo form and tags Exiel with an aid spell-like ability.
aid temporary hit points: 1d8 + 10 ⇒ (6) + 10 = 16

Exiel uses his move action to call Lauriel back into her tattoo form, then casts dimension door, bringing Rhon and himself into the tunnel. He appears at an elevation of 10ft above ground (5ft under the ceiling), and with Rhon directly beneath him. The dwarf drops 5ft to the ground (taking no damage so he lands on his feet).

Hey guys I'm gonna be very, VERY busy this week so I'm gonna let Ralph bot me if I do not post before he does. License valid till Friday.

"Don't worry, Brother Delver, we'll get that amulet back. But first we need to clear out those dragons. Ooo! Hey look! Red dragon popsicles!"

Rhon at ground level and Exiel at 10ft in a 20ft high tunnel should mean we block the passage off between us?

Purs, we're probably gonna eat alot of damage, but if you stand far enough back you can channel to heal us without getting the dragons as well. =D

I don't think you can spend your actions to merge/unmerge your tattooed familiar.

Feral: I meant nothing by it. I generally try to list applicable modifiers as a matter of habit. I will omit it in future posts.

Feral: As long as I am controlling Exiel, I know from experience that he never puts his familiar at risk. If you permit it, his familiar could have simply emerged and cast aid on his earlier turn and then returned to her tattoo form on this turn. Otherwise, I believe Exiel will simply not have his familiar emerge at all.

Exiel: I can control you. I will e-mail you if there is any urgent need or if a contingency arises that we have not discussed. Thanks for the body-block. I will consider this a rescue of Ralph for beer-purposes, though in-character Ralph will not see it as such.

Purs: Best stay at the back and keep healing the front-liners. You should not need to move much as long as our front-line holds. Perhaps sending your hound to stand beside Rhon will take some pressure off him. You might also consider casting air walk on Rhon to enable him to take the fight to the flying dragons.

He has the capacity to bring his familiar with him in the dimension door. If it being exposed at all is a problem, he'll have to go without the aid for now

Purs: Communal air walk has a range of touch. Exiel and Ralph are already flying through their own overland flight spells and out of your reach anyway. If you move to Rhon you can divide the duration among him, yourself and your dog.

One of the smaller true striking dragons flies down the hallway. It lunges for Exiel with unerring jaws. Occupying the upper half of the space. It'll be out of range of Rhon.
