Very nice Wrath! Thanks!

Let me muddle that a bit with what I have bubbling in mind, and I'll post it up!

Might not be until tomorrow though, I'm running a bit behind at work tonight,...

THIS is my current name/profile for my character (notice That I haven't actually made the profile yet!) But I'm not sure I'm happy with the name,... or the face,...

Spoiler:

I have an idea for a campaign trait for you. It's similar to the one Algret and I came up with.

Inspired - Having read the stories of the ancient champions and the battles of Iomedae, you find yourself infused with a great sense of purpose and zeal to do the work of good. You are convinced the power of the Sun God flows through you and guides your hand in times of need.

Ok two possiblities for this, you can choose which one you'd prefer for Pietr. Not sure how balanced they are, so feel free to add some advice or throw other ideas in.

1) Your smite ability is more effective than others as the righteous zeal of your god permeates your being. Gain a +1 insight bonus to hit when smiting.

or

2) The book of Iomedae's tales that you salvaged from the temple has a great deal of knowledge hidden within its text. The parables of the hero Khallani, the tale of the water maid and the effreat, the recount of the battle of Sun Mountain. All of these have given you a great amount of knowledge, in a form others may have missed

Gain +1 rank in knowledge history or knowledge religion. History becomes a class skill for you (even if you don't take the bonus rank at this time).

Also, I have an idea for that book to make it more than just a background item. The longer Pietr studies it, the more unusual it seems. More pages appear than he recalled last time, stories he was sure were included change or are written from different perspectives. He has read the book from cover to cover at least three times now, but each time he comes away with a different understanding of how the world works.

Cheers

Pietro (for him only, unless he decides to share)

Spoiler:

The trip aboard Vixen had been hard on everyone. His oldest sister had only recently recovered from her disease, thanks to the treatment from teh Abadarians. He had been in their service for a long time but the cure had taken them an age to perfect. While she had recovered from the wasting, the ragged trip to the city adn their rushed flight and long voyage had taken its toll on her again. She was sick, a cough in her lungs that rattled her chest and had his mother crying at night when she though the others were sleeping.

Pietro had worked tirelessly among the refugees, tending to wounds that were too trivial to bug the healers in the medical bay about. He helped organise food dispersal and get people settled into as much comfortable living as he could manage. People began to recognise him as a great help, one to look to when trouble arose, but always his father would be there with a comment. "The boy is useless, don't expect much from him".

When the Gharundi had come trying to stir up trouble for the healers, it had been Pietro who had intervened on behalf of the majority of them. He had been the one warned off the enraged man and his angry supporters, calling for a unified approach to get teh ship and its passengers to safety. His father had called him a fool then, claiming that if tehy had taken teh ship, their family would have been able to claim a leadership roll wherever they settled. When they had heard about the bugbear and its influence on the uprising, Pietro had looked at his father and shaken his head sadly. "Useless boy" the old man had muttered, but he looked much older.

Now they were on the beach, working to gather foods and other supplies to last them a journey. The air was clean and the food was fresh, but still his sister suffered and his mother wept. The young felt helpless, aimless. The book had provided no guidance in this, its stories more about action and moral tales. He was beginning to despair when the delegation approached him.

It was Astallia who actually asked him, her soft brown eyes looking up into his and her gentle smile warming him in a way he felt uncomfortable about. "You could be our voice to the Captain Pietr" she said quietly. "They are making decisions that affect our future yet none are asking us for input. If you would stand for us, we may have a better place when we arrive at Gergythia. Will you be our spokesmen?". She had taken his hand in hers on teh last question, the warmth of her skin like teh fire of Iomedae herself in the young mans heart.

Now he found himself standing before the captains tent, the strange wizard he had been nursing for most of the trip was beside him, his reasons for being there unknown but his presence welcome none the less. He wasn't sure what to say or ask. The Captain was in front of him now, looking towards the jungles. As Pietr turned to look, he saw it was the group who had saved tehm from the goblins in the intial flight from the city.

I struggled a little for motivation there tom. Mostly becasue you had written such a neat little background yourself that I didn't want to mess with. I tried to expand on things a little, but I've left plenty for you to develop yourself. Particularly your family. Other bits I've added but you can run with them or not as you see fit. Cheers

Update coming, SOON! :)

Wrath-

Spoiler:

OK, still actually writing up the PC, but have decided (until I change my mind again!)
-straight wiz, no specialist (Low on spells/day, major flexibility!)
-Familiar, not bonded item, (Even though he;s not a specialist NOW, he WAS a conjurer, and I cannot see a conjurer without a familiar!) :) Raven will be familiar, will speak common.
-I will buy basic starting gear, letting YOU pick the 'masterwork item' (He'll discover it 'in character', as I do not yet know what it is, and HE doesn't remember anyway!)
-Gear; can I buy scrolls? can I buy some (1st lvl) that i wrote myself? (12.5 GP instead of 25GP)
- Will probably take Arcane Strike Feat, so I will have a magic weapon to use with my 'Hand of the Apprentice' power
-In my travels from 'before', can I have acquired the Versasian Tattoo feat (conjurer)?

That's all for now, and Thanks again to TT for allowing me the use of his character for my intro!
:D

Spoiler:

Familiar sounds good.

Varisian Tattoos are fine. In fact, the tattoos can come from the ritual used to bond you we spoke of (the hot knife scene from your dreams).

Scrolls are fine, as are magic potions etc.

I'll think about your masterwork item and throw at you in game soon.

Cheers

POsted my intro, sorry for the book! Hope you enjoy it!

I'm going to bed now, been a long night at work!

Oh, all of the effects in the intro were presumed to be accomplished with a variety of cantrips. A stretch, but doable! :)

Great intro Ragadolf! And no worries, I know all about the inability to stop the story once it starts...it just Has to come out! ;-)

And when you write a 'book' which is that entertaining, as far as I'm concerned there are no apologies needed.

Welcome!

Thx again for the invite, i really have enjoyed all of your guys interactions, and seriously hope I can keep up with it!

I am still working on the actual character sheet Wrath, I forgot about some of the pre-reqs for feats, so I have to do some serious juggling! (I guess he'll 'remember' them as we go along?!)

OH! And all of the parts in italics were from Wrath! I had to re-write the intro and add them in, because they were too good not to share!

See you all later, crazy busy days/nights here at work this week,...

Wrath:

Spoiler:

How do you interpret the use of Use Magic device Skill with the Item creation rules? I ask because at one point it read like you could use Use Magic Device to imitate an Item Creation Feat. Though I think I read where it specifically says that is the one thing you can NOT use it to imitate!

Reason I ask is, there are SO many Feats, and so little time! And I would like to be able to create my own magic items, or at least some of them, wands and WOndrous items at least, but there are other feats I wanted to. (I'm trying to plan my feat selection through at least 5th lvl, if not 8th,)

So, this answer will directly affect my choice of Traits and feats! :)

Thx again!

The Exchange

Spoiler:

Hmmm, interesting question. I'm going to rule no on this one, though you can use UMD during creation if you don't have one of the prerequisite spells say and you have a scroll or wand that does.

Algret has the arteficer domain from her god and I had planned on leting her take some untrained crafting attempts at times, but not likely for creating magic itmes (maybe repairing them though).

Eventually we get to a large population and highly magical area, if it proves to be too much of a frustration, I'm sure I can write in some bonuses at some point that let you get more crafting. Occasionally I've been now to hand out extra feats as rewards instead of loot when major story arcs are complete, so keep that in mind as well.

Also, in my campaings, certain magic items are rechargeable if you have the right item creation feats and spells. Certain wands can be recharged etc, though each time the capacity goes down. I really wanted to make item creation more useful than just making items between missions. (Otherwise my rl players would never choose them hehe)

Hope that's not going to crimp your style Rags.

Cheers

Spoiler:

Very good, thank you.

Crimp my style? Not a chance! ;)

I'm fine with it actually. It makes perfect sense that UMD can fool a stick into thinking you know a fireball spell, but you can't get around the fact that you have to know how to craft a wand to fool it in the first place! :)

(One PbP I was in, the DM had come up with a 'craft point' system to enhance the game. It was before the XP requirement was cut in PF, and was basically a way to create smaller magic items without spending XP. We didn't think it was overpowered, but I admit it still needed some fine tuning. If your interested in looking at it for future options, I'll give you the link to the old notes page here on the message boards.)

Just to let you know, I'm a creative type guy. (In case you couldn't tell from my intro! Heh.) I luv coming up with new spells, items, etc. And I don't mean weapons (most of the time, though I have been known to try and forge a blade or two!) ANYbody at 20th lvl can create a flaming, holy, axiomatic +3 spoon of undead smashing! I try to come up with things that one might actually afford, or at least afford if they build them on their own! :)

For Slidell I was (slowly) building a Runestaff (MIC) that was essentially a sonic screwdriver, it had knock, shatter, etc.

MAinly I was asking because when I get to play (which isn't often) the creative feats get unchosen, because we either don't get to play long enough to actually use them, or the storyline/campaign doesn't give you any down time to make anything.

As long as I get to stretch my imagination a little, I'm good!

Thx Wrath, and on with the show! :)

Spoiler:

Heya Rags, I've been thinking about the unique item to give your character. Since I effectively gave the other two casters a familiar, and you've already got a familiar, how about something to compensate. Will work like a bonded item only a little less powerful.

I was thinking your cane caould store one extra spell per day in it. Anything from your spell book at the appropriate level. You can prepare it directly into your cane, as if it were a bonus spell slot. Unlike a bonded item, it must be prepared ahead of time though.

I think this adds a bit of functionality to your cane at a very useful power for your level. It's probably worth more than 300gp, but then so are the familiars now (and Bo-Dans pendant willbe worth a hell of a lot more than that by now as well).

Let me know your thoughts.

Finally got a chance to catch up.

Years ago I went to a Pete (Seeger) and Arlo (Guthrie) concert. Pete got the crowd singing some old hymn and we blew the roof off the rafters. (I usually hate the sing alongs.) It was incredible. Well, when it was over, Arlo just sat there. Then he started tuning his guitar. For five minutes he tuned his guitar and explained how there was no way he could follow that.

Fellows, I'll be tuning my guitar for the next week or two.

the campaign trait sounds very cool . WOuld it be in addition to or in place of the "nature boy" trait already in his description? "nature boy" isn't the real name of the trait, but it's similar to many i've seen which read "Some skill gets +1 bonus and is always a class skill." I was mostly looking for something else he might have gotten out of his ervitude that might complement the healing, but would be happy to dump it for your campaign trait.

Your idea for "Stories of the gods" is awesome. I had been thinking it would be the source of know(religion) skill for him. So that fits perfectly.

Spoiler:

Take them both if you want. I certainly don't think either of them are any more powerful than other traits out there from Paizo. Some of the ones I've written for the other charcters are slightly better, but then balance comes in how you use them I reckon.

For both thom and rags

As for what you wanted to use to impress the captain it's up to you.

Knowledge plants/nature would be useful for gathering algaes and possiblly edible food from the jungles edges.

You could use diplomacy to make a group of people work more efficiently.

Any abilities in hunting might be useful in catching something larger to eat from the water

If you can come up with creative uses of knowledge skills as well, feel free.

They're some suggestions from me, but don't feel limited to those.

You can make three tests in the day. Depending on what you devide to use them for will determine how hard I deem it is to succeed.
The trick is it has to impress the captain as well.

Three easy tasks might make no impression. One successfully completed difficult task might impress him enough to overlook other minor failures.

Seems prettty vague, but I actually want to let you use your imagination without me putting too many limitations on it at this stage.

If you need more guidance I can come up with some specific trials, it might just take me a day or two is all :)

Cheers

Therealthom:
About Trying to impress the captain; ANy ideas?
I had a few thoughts, but would like to work out something together if possible.
(One of the major drawbacks to PbP, working together SEEMS to be much harder, though I suppose it SHOULD be as easy as RL or even easier, since we can discuss things in the OOC thread without actually delaying the others around the table?) ;S

ANYway, Smythe has a lot of knowledge skills, but his physical skills are merely adequate. And his people skills, lets just say he's a hammer, and people require a screwdriver. ;)

I had thoughts about (if I got a decent rolls) using the knowledge skills to point out where the people could find clams, instead of digging around the beach blindly, pointing out edible plants that weren't obvious, etc. (My wife watches too much survivor!) ;P

Any persuasion YOU should definitely handle! At most I might be able to give an assist roll. (Maybe I could help best if you first persuaded Smythe to go to the other end of the beach, so he doesn't try to help you!) ;)

What else can we come up with (besides foodstuffs) that the others haven't already done? They've investigated the idols (and they now know all about them, even if the captain doesn't until they come back) The Bugbear is neutralized,

I'm tired, is there something I'm forgetting? Something that needs to be done that the Captain isn't going to tell us about we could do to 'impress' him?

Ack, long day at work, I have a cold, and I'm tired, I'll think better tomorrow! (I hope!)
Laters, :)

Spell-storing cane sounds great! Thank you! :D
That gives me something I can work with in the future too!
(So, does that make it officially a 'masterwork' item?) ;P
(JK, mostly)

To clarify, I'm using the cane as a Club, (got the idea from a premade character in one of the PF series) And was thinking that when we got to higher levels, I would have a masterwork cane made, but hopefully with the stats of a Morningstar. Because if I'm going to be getting any use out of my Hand of the Apprentice, I'll need something that actually hurts them when it hits! (A dagger just won't 'cut it', pun intended!) ;)

But I like the idea! I'll come up with some idea IC why he's held onto it all this time, (presuming he wasn't using it before) Maybe it was a gift from that girl in his vision/dream/memory? Or something similar. That will explain why it's working like a 'semi-bonded' item, it's got 'emotional attachment'! :)

Thanks again!

From the context of your post I presume Astallia is not Pietro's sister. Budding love interest perhaps? I'd like to move her scene to sometime after Pietro's first failed attempt to contact the captain. A reaffirmation of purpose.

I will be writing one more post regarding the period between the Symington-Venn conversation and going to the beach. Twas impllied Sym and P would be going with the cap. If so it would be a good chance to buttonhole Venn.

Rags, impressing the cap? know(plants) or healing is Pietro's best chance at this point. Wrath also hinted at diplomacy - greasing the squeaky wheels of progress. Let me think about it.

And sure, we can make her reaffirmation after the first attempt. Ragadolf and I kind of cut you out of that first scene sorry to say, but I liked how you handled it.

You will be rowing back to shore with the captain, one of you probably having to use the oars since most of the sailors are already ashore.

One thing Venn likes is having others do that kind of job for him. He's a competent sailor, but why row when you're the captain eh?

If you make the head of the cane the only part that has the capacity to carry the charge, it's easy enough to transfer between weapons.

Masterwork is really just very well crafted. The one you currently have isn't. A good weponsmith could easily transfer the head across and craft a masterwork item for it. I imagine a mace or morningstar or some such item would use the head to counterweight the actual attacking end.

The head itself is very well made, it's just attatched to a normal cane at the moment.

Cane head, Perfect! Thx!

I'm muddling with the idea of the cane head being the shattered remnant of some item of his dead girlfriend. (A melted part of a sword, or armor, or metal magic item, etc.) Which is why he hangs onto it.

(I presume that we are on the same wavelength about the girl from his dreams being his girlfriend/wife and that he was forced to kill her, which is the 'dark secret' I mentioned earlier that would torment him, even though he was forced to do it. ) Since Sym has memory troubles, I'll stick with 'He knows he cared about her more than breath itself, and he killed her' as his primary memories, but he doesn't remember why, with hints like in your dream post that maybe he was forced to. (That won't help the guilt, of course!) The rest of the details I'll leave to you, (WHat her class was, where it happened, etc.) hopefully it'll make it easier for you to work into your world story that way!

WHen I first thought of the cane, and it was wood, I toyed with the idea that he would whittle on it in his spare time with his silver dagger, and as we progressed the head would look more and more like a dragon, (or something equally impressive-looking).

EDIT- Ooh, ok, former conjurer,,... the most powerful good creature that you can summon with summon monster is a Coatl, so maybe (we're talking over several levels here!) the cane starts looking more and more like a Coatl? OR one of the evil creatures if Sym starts taking matters into his own hands? (I'm not PLANNING on it! But as he is seriously confused right now, I'm leaving the window of possibilities open!) :)

ACK! I ramble! again!

Hey Wrath.

I was reflecting on Algret a bit, since we're definitely on to something new and exciting, and it occurred to me that Algret is far more comfortable around some humans that many dwarves. This may find its roots in whatever occurred in her past to cause her to be alone in the south.

Her fondness for humans is becoming especially strong now but I think for reasons in her past(story potential) it's been that way for a long time. Of course if you have plans for encountering a Dwarven sttlement later on , this could be problematic, or intersting depending on how you want to look at it.

Just voicing a few random thoughts.

The Exchange

I'll put my mind to it Mark.

In my original outline for the game I had a whole list of games where you could reestablish ties to a dwarven clan.

The campaign has gone off on a completely different tangent to what I had thought though.

Those games may pop up again, we'll see.

Rags, been thinking about how to impress the captain. No good ideas. Pietro is not built to impress this early in his career. It might help if we imagined a likely problem facing the shore parties that we could then solve, but I'm coming up dry. As a fledgling paladin Pietro's best feature is whacking bad things, but he doesn't know that yet. From his perspective, reading-writing, healing, gathering herbs and plants is about all he's good for. Although no weakling, he's not strong enough to really impress with feats of heavy labor.

Know(plants) could lead to discover of fishberry to prevent seasickness among the worst of the refugees, or discovery of that something mildly poisonous had been gathered in the stores.

On your side, your familiar might see the party coming early and alert you, thereby making you look prescient when you tell the captain someone is coming through the woods just before they break into the clear.

The Exchange

M

Don't knock yourselves out fellas, I've got an idea or two to throw your way. I'll toss one at you tonight or tomorrow morning. I have an idea for a bit of an interaction with some of teh other "natives" but I don't want this to drag out too long.

Also, for everyone, have a read of teh spoiler I put in for Milhar if you would. I'm playing with some rules for spiritual combat 9something that occurs in David Gemmels books occasionally). Any feedback or ideas would be good.

I'll put some more ideas about it into this thread later, but I want Milhar to discover a few things in game as we go.

Cheers

I understand Thom, I'm coming up with a big blank too. ;P
I think your best opportunity to impress would be with an act of bravery, if the opportunity presents itself. (Not an act of fighting or strength, though that would work, but being brave, rescuing a child from a crab attack with no sword, that sort of thing)

Yah, I thought about trying to be the 'all powerful mage', but I'm fairly certain that Captain Venn has heard of a familiar before. (Doesn't mean I won't DO it, just that it's not likely to impress!) ;P

Sokay Wrath, Sym will just be 'himself', which should give him ample opportunity to do,... something. ;P But yeas, I want to play it up, but not drag it out. I want to 'meet' these other guys! This is gonna be fun! :) (This is the kind of character that either makes a lot of friends, or has everyone glaring at him behind his back!) :)

EDIT- Just took a peek at your 'spirit battle' ideas. Nice. I have GOT to read some of these books! :)

I have a question, are you using anything resembling rules for ethereal or astral travel? Or is this completely separate?

You can use an unused spell slot for the things listed, or cast a spell as normal?

Let's see it in action, Go get'em Milhar! ;)

Cookie Jar Pilferer 9 ; Dimensional Explorer 4
"Wrath' wrote:

You keen to try some spirit fighting Milhar? ...

For every spell slot left, you have a point to use for enhancing your spirit form. Each point can be used to (i)increase hit points by three, (ii)Increase AC by 1, (iii)increase attack and damage by 1, (iV) Increase saves by 1 (v)increase speed by 5 feet. You can spend all points in one go, or save them and spend them as a free action in your turn.

Cool rules. A couple ideas

-- should points scale with spell level? Should a Sam seventh level with 1 fourth level spell left be outgunned by Joe first level with 2 first level spells? Maybe scale by 1/2 or 1/3 of spell level.

-- How long do the bonuses last ? 1 round or for the encounter?

-- How the spirit realm overlap prime material, ethereal, and astral planes? If Milhar got in trouble some day would Syms be able to help him out by going ethereal kind of thing. (Rags is on this track too)

-- Is everyone subject to spirit fighting? If so you might want to add bonuses based on Int, Wis, and Ch, or applicable feats like Iron Will.

The spirit world is that in between place. An area between life and death, as such it has a little of the plane of death and a little of the prime materail plane in it. Think of this more as the dream world.

Anyone can learn to project into the spirit world, it just takes training, or natural talent which is what Milhar has got.

In short, spells that allow you to go Ethereal will let you see the combats, but not interact, its a whole new kettle of fish. A spell that allows for plane shifting will get you there though.

Because this is mostly a mind based area, and abilities are based off natural power, I agree that combat should be based off Intelligence, wisdom or charisma as a modifier for combat. I'll play around with that concept more today.

Spells will scale up, each tier of spell slot will allow for more abilities or increased points. I haven't developed that too much yet, as Milhar is only first level.

Once spent, the points last the entire spirit journey. This is powerful, but there's a reason for it, as Milhar is about to discover :).

I'm tossing around the idea of not letting spell effects work. The books are definately about martial combat in the spirit world, but I don't know how that is going to stack up in terms of balance. Maybe spells like shield or mage armour - defensive force effects. Spirit weapon may work to summon a force weapon to your hand. However, I don't want this coming down to ranged combat with spells. Its an area where powerful casters can become martial legends by burning their power to enhance their spirit form.

All of this is a work in prgress, and only something I bothered to do because of Milhars concept btw. I'm very much open to suggestions, especially as we progress and see how this all works.

Cheers

PS - Swamped with work and kids today. Will try and get update tonight but no promises. Sorry to those waiting with baited breath :)

Cool, Can't wait to see how it works out! LIke I said, I'm a big fan of the making up new stuff for the game, so I'm glad to help! :)
(Not so good with BALANCING though, that's not my strong suit,...) ;P

BTW, I went to the library today, and picked up some of Gemmel's books. The series whose title starts with an 'R'? :)

The series with the most books in, (that I think you said Milhar's abilities was based from), they only had 2 or 3 volumes of. :P

S'all good Wrath, update when ready, I'm not going anywhere soon! :D

I'm sure it will evolve, the spirit fighting. It was done by the Thirty in the books who are a cross between paladins and pacifist mages. But I'd rather that one day everyone gets a chance to join in, perhaps by a ritual of something.

As for spell use, Wrath, I quite agree that some of the magic would be out of character, for instance I will not be trying to charm the gnollish spirits.

For now, your suggested options are just great, they are simple and give me plenty of choice, which makes me happy.

Cheers

P.S. Rags I don't know the books by R series etc perhaps you could give me a title or two.

The only Gemmell books which have no useful mention of the Source are the Jon Shannow books, they deal with a futuristic cowboy in a post nuclear ruined land fighting warped evil people and their demonic masters. Thinking about it even those have him tracked by shamans using the spirit world.

Rigante series:
Sword in the Storm (1999)
Midnight Falcon (2000)
Ravenheart (2001)
Stormrider (2002)

They only had 3 of the Drenai series, (And none in order) so I'll tackle those later.

And thanks for the tip! Judging by the reviews/etc I'm reading, the man was a genius! How have I collected sci-fi/fantasy for all these years, and haven't picked him up yet?!? ;P

Being (Originally) from Oklahoma, I know enough about the indian tales to think that would be a great way to portray magic as well, particularly as a Druid! Lots of rituals, 'spirit-traveling' and communing with your spirit guide. Hm, great, ANOTHER character to put on the back-burner! ;P

FYI- I'm pretty much done with Sym.
I still need to finish shopping (scrolls mostly) but he has all of the basic traveling supplies.

He should be good to go, there may still be some math to fix from where I dropped his Int from 18 to 17, (I used the points to boost Wis, Con & Cha) but I THINK I found it all. ;P

He included Detect Poison and Mending in his cantrips for the day, intending to use them to assist with the repairs/supplying. :)

See you all inside!
