Wrath

Spoiler:

sorry, should have included these:
Mind or Matter (Ex)
When a Martial Artist is wearing light armor and unencumbered the Martial Artist applies her Wisdom bonus or Strength bonus (which ever is higher) to any roll involving her Strength bonus (EG. Grapple, Climb, Swim, etc.) This includes her attack and damage rolls with any weapon she is proficient with even Martial or Exotic Weapons she has taken feats for such as Bastard Sword, Spiked Chain, etc.

Snap Kick
At 6th level, a Martial Artist gains the Snap Kick feat as a bonus feat. When you make a melee attack with one or more melee weapons (including standard attack, full attacks, even a strike maneuvers or charge action), you can make an additional attack at your highest attack bonus. The attack is an unarmed attack that deals damage equal to your base unarmed attack damage + ½ your Str or Wis bonus. You take a =2 penalty on all attack rolls you make this round.

As I said, I can't remember where I found Spin Kick and can't find any info on it so until I do I guess we can just consider it lost to history... :P

I'll warm up the noggin on a trait again too.

So, just to be clear, for the moment we're going with the Martial Artist BAB progression but d8 hp's and the Ki Pool from Pathfinder? (and pathfinder skills and all the rest of course) That about right?

Khaladon,

Spoiler:

I am extremely reluctant to use any outside fixes for classes. Mostly becasue they aren't play tested and the ones I have seen are overpowered to the extreme. The one showed me follows that pattern as far as I can see. All the bonus feats are front loaded and they want evasion and mettle for the monk, a class that already gets very good saves. That one is a class dippers dream. Two levels of monk and on to the next one thanks :). I also think it will drift too far from what Paizo will throw our way in August when the official rules come out. I don't want to discourage you from using the monk, as I like the class. But I'm really keen to keep the classes balanced at this stage.

I'd prefer you go with what we've already discussed. I like the build you provided better as it gives you the choice of what feats to take on those bonus levels. And yes, your summary in the spoiler sounded about right.

Cheers

Milhar.

Spoiler:

The day had been long, working along the docks trying to earn enough cash to stay in a city on the verge of panic. The coins of the Sun Empire had suddenly lost much value, despite being made of gold and silver, just like elsewhere. Suddenly traders were looking for Tien Dragon coins, or credit slips for Chelaxian trade houses. Many were the people begging on the docks and warehouse district, trying to get their coins traded so they could buy a berth on the few ships still remaining in the harbour.

He moved to his bed, blowing out the lamp as he sank onto the hard pallat. The room was not luxurious, but the Tavern keeper, Keppel, was inherintly honest and a good man as far as Milhar could tell. Sleep took the exhausted sorceror in moments.
**************

He floated over the city, a great den of seething emotions, the greatest of which was fear. To the south, a great sea of anger and hatred was rising towards the white walls. He flew closer to this, seeing the red tide of goblinoid emtions and dreamers. Before himthe shadows of the world coallesced, a chill creeping into his spirt for. The sounds of the world dampened and muffled, as if a heavy blanket had been draped across it. The shadows formed a great beast with the head of a desert jackal, scaled shoulders and a barbed tail. The stench of dead meat and ruptured entrails crept into his senses, casuing Milhar to reel.

"You shouldn't have come here boy. You'll see enough of this soon enough" the beast spoke, its voice the sound of a hundred anquished people all crying the same words. It raised its hand contemptuaously and struck the young traveller, sending him reeling through the sky. He felt the tenuous link to his corporeal body severed and he screamed in sudden fear. This was only the third time he had travelled this way and the severed link felt like an open wound in his belly. Mocking laughter follwed him as his surroundings faded, becoming more shadowy. He screamed again.

**************
The mists parted silently, revealing a strange scene below him. A great many strands of silvery light converged on a single point. Some seemed to come from behind him, others fanned out in a pattern to the front. As he moved closer to the vergence, almost unable to control his descent, he realised it was again the city he had left. He floated above a dock, a great ship standing at port loading people and supplies. Two figures gleamed amongst the crowd, their souls showing brightly in a sea of dull greys. One was marked with a mighty hammer, her body caste in armour of great power and righteous vengence. The other flickered between man and beast. A giant of a man, constantly struggling with a great cat that raged within. The two boarded the ship and suddenly Milhars mind fractured.

Parts of him travelled amongst the myriad of paths leading from the ship. In some the two were killed in the bay, their bodies bloating and rupturing with poisons delivered from the ends of stings and arrows, or torn apart by the great sliver fish that swam unknown beneath the vessel. In others they became great reavers, slaughtering and raiding along the coast as they organised the overthrow of the captain. In these scenes the great cat dominated the man, and the armour of the small woman bacme dark and blood stained. The world ran with blood and pain, anarchy ruled.

In some very few strands these two stood beside others, whose souls also gleamed in the masses of dull spirits. In these strands great changes could be wrought, things of importance were completed and the world tilted away from the destruction of nations, ever so slowly.

Milhar was panicking now, his mind segmented and unable to come back together, he began to lose a sense of who he was. He was no longer Milhar, he was now a thousand individual emotions all pulling for dominance. A voice whispered in his ear, calm and feminine. "Do not struggle so much Milhar"[b]. With the speaking of his name his soul became one, joined again at the point above the city. [b]"Think of your room, picture your body resting on the pallet. Already the sky begins to grey with the first lights of dawn. Go to your body now"

Milhar turned to find his saviour. She floated a few feet from him , her body cloaked in white robes, a great sword sheathed behind her back. Her beauty was amazing to behold, almost impossible to comprehend. "Who are you?" he asked, his voice slightly awed.

"I am Sanaress. When next you travel, burn a candle of sandlewood and lavender. It will help you focus. Now go, your time grows short"
She pushed him gently and he could feel his body again connected to his spirtit.

"Wait, what must I do now. With the visions? Wait.....!"
The last was said with a yell as he sat up abruptly in his bed. The cool desert night crept into his room, a gentle breeze blowing in off the harbour. Outside he could hear the sounds of yelling as men began to load supplies on the ships below. Moving to his window he saw a huge Chelaxian vessel being loaded. It was the ship from his vision.

Hope you enjoy it FW.

Paera and Bo-Dan

Spoiler:

Bo-Dan sat looking down at the sleeping form of Paera. She was half draped in the sheets of her bed, her legs having kicked off the covers in the heat of the night. Now, as the cooler morning air drifted in from the harbour, her skin prickled with goose bumps and the young rogue stirred in her sleep. Bo-Dan sighed.

She remembered the day the two had met, back in Tien Province. The monk had just purchased a small seed roll and went to pay the merchant when she realised her purse was missing. Turning to look into the crowd she had picked up the lithe form of a hlaf elf trying to slip through the crowd. It was the way the people around her had reacted that had drawn Bo-Dan's attention to her. "Just like me she thought, "distaste and distrust wherever we go".

"Hey, you going to pay for that roll Half Blood!" the merchant called at her. She had already taken a bite from the roll, but now had no money. Ignoring the old woman, Bo-Dan instead began to chase down the rogue. The thief had heard her coming and tried to duck into an alley to lose her, but the monk was far more agile and quick on her feet than taht. As she had reached out and caught hold of Paera, the young rogue had turned with a dagger in her hand. The blade would have plunged deep into the monks unprotected stomach but Paera had hesitated in that moment, looking into the eyes of another half elf for the first time in years.

Behind them a deep voice spoke out, "Well, well. Two Gaijin in our alley. And pretty ones too eh!"[b]. The statement was accompanied by the chuckling of a few other men.

The two half elves turned to see the alley behind them filled with a group of very rough looking Tien gangsters. Their dragon tattoos sprawled across thier bare chests and down their arms, forming the sleeves that acted as the heralds of the street gangs in these cities.

[b]"Let's show them what we think of Gaijin in this area boys. Show them why woman are the weaker sex." the statement was said in a low murmer, the lust in the mans voice very obvious. He stepped forward, right into the oncoming fist of Bo-Dan which snapped his head backwards and slammed it into a wall. He sank with a groan to lie motionless on the ground. The other three men exploded into action, drawing weapons and charging the two women.

Bo-Dan didn't remember the details fo the fight with too much clarity, but when it was over the four assailents lay at thir feet. Two of them were obviously dead, one with a broken neck thanks to Bo-Dan and the other with dagger sized hole in his chest, the blood still arcing out in great bursts. A whistle blew at the end of the alley and a Gendarme stood there, halberd in hand and screaming in the sing song language of the locals. The two half elves hadn't waited to see what would happen. As they ran, the thief turned to Bo-Dan and smiled, her face turning into radient beauty for the monk. "Paera's the name. Pleased to meet you"

The two had travelled together for five years since that time. Always the young rogue landing them in some form of trouble, but the monk couldn't bring herslef to leave. There was something marvellous in the chaotic nature of this young half elf that counterpointed Bo-Dan's strict code.

With a start she found herself back in the present. On the bed, Paera woke with a catlike stretch, a sleepy smile across her face. "What's for breakfast Bo? I could eat the armpit from a halfling Meat herder. Hey! When's our boat leave? Oh you should hear about the dream I had, there were these two men, right, and they....."
Bo-Dan tuned out her words, moving to prepare the morning meal, as her friend prattled on in the background. This morning they sailed for he lands of the Chelaxians, a slight altercation with a local slave baron ensuring their welcome in the Sun Empire was no longer assured.

Hope you two enjoy it. Took some poetic license with the things you may have said and the impression I have of your characters so far. Hope it gels.

Cheers

All good with the Monk Wrath, just thought I'd run it by you and

Regarding the Background: (Val too)

Spoiler:

Loved it! Beautifully descriptive while still ambiguous enough to allow various interpretations of the exact nature of their relationship to be made. Brilliant job mi amigo.

Awesome Wrath!

Wrath and Khal:

Spoiler:
I guess the only thing I'd change is Paera pulling a knife on someone chasing her because of bread theft, but then again she might actually do it for show if cornered. And everything else, love!

Khal, I guess the only hard choice is whether it would be better to have Bo-Dan and Paera already in a relationship or still building towards one. I'm fine either way, but I wanted to get a handle on how you would like to play Bo-Dan as far as romance goes(pining for Paera, already content, or something else?). Either way, Paera's probably not going to change much, though if they're together she might be a bit afraid of doing something that would make Bo-Dan leave her.(abandonment issues, yay!)

I'm eager to see how this group gets along. :)

Appearance updated too.

Algret and Vik

Spoiler:

The last year had been hard on Vik. The merchant had decided at the last minute not to take the big Ulfen with him for the final meeting in his venture. It had proven to be a fatal mistake for the man, and it had left the shifter with no job in a strange land.

He had signed up to a mercenary company working the western mountain trails while the Immortal Emperor prepared his defenses against the newest goblinoid push. The mercenaries had been hard men, mostly Gharund and Khelleshites who had been forced from their homes in the early stages of the war. They had all seen death many toimes over the last ten years. Most of them treated Vik with a certain amount of fear and left the big man alone. It was with some amusement that he found the only one who would associate with him was the female dwarf Algret.

The two were like chalk and cheese. The hulking form of the shifter with his brooding mood swings and volatile nature, countered by the diminutive dwarf with the rock steady attitude. They were both very good in a fight though, and soon developed a fast friendship. The similarities between their two languages had seen them discussing such diverse topics as religion and tactics long into the night when others slept around small watch fires.

Things had changed three weeks ago though. They had been sent on patrol to check on a report of Ogrekin in the area. When they stumbled on the remains of the dwarven clansmen, Algret stood in shock. The dwarves had obviously died fighting, surrounding three of their clan in the centre. Those three wore the trappings of priests, their holy symbols still clutched in their hands.

When the other mercenaries had started looting the bodies, Algret had gone crazy. She shield slammed the sergent, Khemmet, when he had taken the silver pendant of Torag from one of the priests. Weapons had been drawn and suddenly Vik had found the rage upon himself. He couldn't control the bloodlust of the beast within and had shifted, his claws extending painfully from his fingers, and his linen shirt nearly bursting as his body swelled with strength and hatred. He had stood towering above and behind the now weeping dwarf, while the men they had patrolled with for months stood with fear and hatred in their eyes.

As suddenly as she had lost her temper, Algret seemed to regain her composure. She had stood and faced down the men in front her, declairing that she and Vik would be leaving. As she laid a hand upon his arm he had calmed almost at once. None of the mercenaries had followed them.

Now he stood on the docks of Azhagur, preparing to board a Chelxian merchantman while the hounds of war readied themselves to destroy the land behind him. He didn't fully understand the change that had overcome his dwarven friend, but he certainly felt she was more determeined than ever to return to the north.

North, where his clan had once belonged. He looked up at the broad beamed hull of the merchantman and a shiver ran down his spine. North.

Hope you like it guys. Took some liberties with your background Woodraven, but it made the story work better. Hope you don't mind.

Yeppo, people would sell you their children at the moment so they could get enough gold to buy a berth on a ship. Candles shouldn't be a problem. These are about a silver piece each as they're actually scented and treated for rituals. You can assume you have made the purchase prior to my first post in the game thread when it opens.

On that note to others, If there are items you'd like to buy before game time knowing a bit more about the game start, feel free to do so.

Anyone using magic in this game, I'll be dropping various unique alchemical items into the game at times that will add benefits to casting and rituals. Fighting types will get their joy in unique non magical gear.

TerraNova

Spoiler:

Liked your trait. It was better than what I was coming up with.

I think we need to Pathfnder the Warlock a bit.

Hit points should be d8 since you use the moderate BAB progression (as per cleric and rogure etc)

Skills should be 2+ int modifier. Then just allocate like we do for other pathfinder classes.

That's about it as far as I can tell. Your character is coming along nicely.

I'll do some back story for you like I have for the others soon. It's a bit harder to tie your character to the others at the moment but I think your creative enough and a good enough player to keep the motivation for your chacter up and maybe build your own ties. We'll see where the story I write leads us.

Cheers

Great work Wrath. It flows so nicely and can easily been seen in the mind's eye. As far as the liberties, this game is in the creation mode so definitely some give and take is going to happen; you give, I take; I take you give, oh already said that, I meant I give you take. I am trying some humor here *now laugh*:)

Ok! Bo-Dan's Done! (I Think? ;-)

I Pathfinderized her, added Personality description, updated her gear and whatnot. Please do check her out though as I've made mistakes before updating to PF.

Oh and Wrath

Spoiler:

Don't know if you recall it from her Background but I've included in her Gear the Elfin Crystal Star Medallion she inherited (as far as she was told...and Believes) from her parents.
If we still can't come up with a good trait perhaps something could be tied to that?

Or maybe it could at least be some plot-hook? Just a suggestion, she'll still always treasure it for sentimental reasons regardless.

Spoiler:

I cringed when I saw a monk with a strength of 8, but then that's what mind over matter does hehe.

I'm thinking I'd like to drop the ability to use that ability for climb, as it really is a strength thing, whereas i can see grapple, combat and maybe even swim as a techinque issue. I'm willing to be persuaded though.

You've listed a total of 4 in profession (unspecified) but it can't be used untrained. I realise it was for completeness but thought I'd point it out.

your flurry of blows is only -1, pathfinder is still -2. Is that part of the template? (if so I didn't realise). Let's leave it as is for the moment though.

You havn't selected a general trait formt he pathfinder free download yet. (That I could see, though my daughter is sitting beside me asking lots of quesions, hehe)

I was thinking of mdifying one of teh campaign traits from legacy of fire. "Inheritance - The pendant your mother left you has special properties you can call on in times of need. It can be used twice per day to cast light, as per the light spell cast at first level. It also contains a 20 charges of a single first level cleric spell (of your choice). These can be recharged (to a mximum of 20 charges) at a cost equal to having the spell cast on you by an NPC. Although, our cleric has the artefice domain so if you can convince her to do it, she may not charge. Charges done this way only ever act as if cast by a 1st level cleric no matter the caster level of teh charger.

That version is slightly better than the one if LoF

Other than those things, I reckon you're good to go. BoDan looks to be pretty effectivein combat compaired to a normal monk. We'll see how we go.

To those of you who are also checking over Bo-Dan's stats, please note we're trialling an alternate template that Khaladon proposed. It's a work in progress but I actually like some of the changes it's made to a class that was otherwise fairly suboptimal for a combatant.

Cheers

Oh, another question for Khal:

Spoiler:
How forthcoming would Bo-Dan be about her past during the time she and Paera were travelling together? I was wondering if I can read her backstory. ;)

And this is going to sound odd, but does she have any particular favorite animals, flowers, symbols, religious icons or anything that might be used as an image representing her? Paera's going to have interlacing tattoos running down her left arm and side, adding to them bit by bit something to represent her life's journey, and since Bo-Dan would be a big part of that to her...

I wasn't talking about that. I was referring to the two types of views. A barbarian using brute strength and fear to intimidate possibly even threatening physical harm and a pacifist in the same party to come up with a solution to a problem.

Wrath : )

Spoiler:

Yes, haha I thought I'd just post the Str as is without explanation to see what your initial reaction was =) It could be explained in her background easily; the situation of her birth left her physically weak so she had to push herself all the harder to make the strength of her mind compensate...actually I'll add something of the like to her personality or appearance.

I was thinking the same thing myself about climb, and am happy to play it either way. But if you have ever been rock climbing, it is a sport just as much about will power as strength. Like any activity that involves strength and endurance, it's when strength gives out it's Willpower takes you the rest of the way (ask any marathoner or bi/tri athelete ;-) I'm fine with whatever your final choice is though.

Ok, fixed Profession. She is an Astrologist...In Training ;-)

Flurry of Blows changes because of the increased BAB. It is still actually -2/-2.

Can you please give me the link to the Pathfinder page where those damned general traits can be downloaded! I've been looking for them for Days and can't seem to find them Grrrrr lol (And Cute about your daughter, I can just picture it. "Daddy, what's a Monk? Daddy, are there really Dragons? Daddy... : )

Khal the downloaded traits are supposed to be in the beta IIRC but you can go pfogc.com and look at the basics. Neat websit to go to while at work and don't have access to the beta PDF and want to look something up.
*edit*
Sorry about stepping on your toes Wrath and reading the spoiler. Just thought I would help anyway I could.

The Exchange

The free downlod for the traits is in your "my downloads" page. I can't actually link it as the page is geared for individual accounts when people log in I think. It's not in Beta. Alternately, if you have the Second Darkness players guide (you have to buy it sorry), there's a whole bunch in there.

As for spoilers - I don't mind people reading spoilers as long as they keep character knowledge and player knowledge separate. I'm actually sure if you asked most of the players here they'd just say go ahead and read, particularly about their characters and stuff. Check first though, I don't want to talk for anyone else. I don't tend to read spoilers because I like the surprise when I don't make the required rolls :).

I'll be posting game thread sometime today. Feeling strangely nervous about it all. I've managed to build this thing up quite a bit and now I have a bit of stage fright about whether I can pull it off. OH well, ce la vie.

Sorry Val, meant to reply to that earlier! To be honest, so am I. It just seems to make sense, two outcasts clinging to each other in a sea of racism and discrimination and difficulty. Plus, their opposite(ish) personalities should be a natural attraction. I'm not sure how accepting this world may be of these kinds of relationships though (Wrath?) perhaps it's something they put a lot of effort into keeping private? Or maybe it's something we can slowly release publicly in IC?

Oh, and one other thing I noticed...in our back story, when Paera pulled the knife on those men, they weren't the ones chasing her for the stolen bread, I'm pretty sure those were just street toughs intent on...some not nice stuff for the girls. So she was fully within her rights to 'stick it to 'em ' . In My book at least ;-D

Just curious and there's no need to explain if ya don't want, but I just wanted to know if I was understanding your characters actions properly. Are you trying to remove the gang-planks so the refugees Can't get on the ship? And would a Lawful Good character Do that if so?

If Bo-dan happens to spot him doing that this is what she'll be thinking more or less. And she may have some serious words with Milhar. At least until he gets to explain himself anyway : )

Ah!

Spoiler:
I had no idea that's where the word came from! I pulled ves'tacha from an English/Romany dictionary, since...you know...varisians, gypsies, romany... ;)

Paera was raised exclusively by Varisian humans, so she doesn't know Elven, but I'm guessing she'd definitely have picked up at least some from Bo-Dan.

Waiting just a moment for everyone else to get a chance to post before going again in IC. Paera's going to be pretty upset by the sight unfolding down on the docks and the deck.

Val

Spoiler:

Ah, ok, I was assuming that cuz in PF it says that all half-elves start with Elvish & Common but if your background doesn't support this (or you just don't want it) that's cool. And for sure Bo-Dan would have taught her some words. Hmmm, now how would I say 'Sweet Pea' in Elvish? =D

Val and Khal, alot of the stuff I described in the last update would be occuring as you two climb the mast. It's about a 50ft climb so would take you the better part of three rounds to get there. The next update I do you'll be in the crows nest and have a better chance to see whats going on. I'll respond to a look around then.

Khal and French Wolf

Spoiler:

I made the assumption Milhar wanted the gangplanks dropped. In his earlier post he mentioned his concern that the sheer number of refugees would swamp the vessel and that may be likely in this situation. The boat certainly wouldn't tip over, but that many people swarming uncontrolled over a ship would seriously hamper any efforts to get it moving.

While tied to the dock it also can't move. If the ship can't leave, it will be a ship of dead people.

There are currently 75 people on board the ship, including crew and some passengers who are either loading or boarded the day before. Some of the people loading have families on board.

All of those were things I took into account when I read his actions and so I feel it doesn't fall outide the range of Lawful Good. Protecting those he can and all that.

I wanted to answer that for French Wolf as he is likely to be out of action for a bit, and I've got a bit of an insight into his character.

Also, I don't mind people reading spoilers, but please be careful with how you use information not meant for your character. I know some players put info to the DM in spoilers becasue they don't want other players knowing about it as well as other characters. Always best to check with a player before reading it. Any spoilers I put in for spot checks etc are free game as long as you are happy to separate your knowledge from player knowedge. But if I put a spoiler in for a specific character sometimes it's because they want's stuff secret from everybody.

No harm no foul though, I know you were just trying to get a feel for the characters.
Cheers

I am a bit busy at the moment but this one needs answering and I'll do it in the clear for everyone's sakes.

Khaladon, I only use spoilers when I want specific people to know things, like the DM. Maybe you looked at them, maybe not but if anyone reads them again when they are not directed at them I shall drop out of what is potentially a great game. That would be a shame.

Feel free it ask anything else in character, I am a roleplayer at heart and my characters aren't always perfect or right. But they do have their reasons. Once we get into the game more and we all have a better idea of what each is like, then I'll probably open up more on those reasons both here and in game. For now there is too much fun to be had in the way everyone is acting in what is potentially a true moral dilemma. Good work by the way, Wrath.

Is that fair? I hope so.

Cheers

Most of the time I do not read spoilers, pretty much for the same reasons Wrath doesn't. As it was brought up so many times in the thread though I guess I relaxed my hold on my curiosity more than usual. Even when I do read a spoiler though I have no problem keeping player and character knowledge separate. This is why I asked my question to you FW in a spoiler as well. And the only reason I even asked about it at all (other than my stated curiosity on your take on lawful good) was because the action you described in the spoiler Could have been seen by Bo-dan, or anyone. (I believe I did say something along the lines of "If she sees it...")

Wrath however did make an excellent argument on your behalf for the possible reasons for Milhar's actions which would still make his choice, and an obviously difficult one at that, while still be behaving within the precepts of his religion/code.

I most certainly can understand and abide with your desire not to have anyone read spoilers you post for specific people French Wolf and I for one can promise you that I shall not do so again.

It would be terrible to see anyone feel they needed to leave this game, which with the players and GM involved has such great potential and I hope you never feel the need to.

I also hope all this is cleared up satisfactorily and is water under the bridge and all that...;-)

Enjoy your vacation FW! I know I sure will my mini one! =)

Wrath (and Val if you like since she'll see it all anyway : )

Spoiler:
For the short time I will be gone Wrath (like two days or less) if battle begins before I get back Bo-Dan will be putting all of her effort into keeping Paera safe. The monk will try to get as many shots off with her sling if possible but then will drop it and draw her sai with her other hand and bring death and destruction on any foe who tries to harm her girl ;-)
