Dungeon World! (Inactive)

Game Master d'Eon

A group of adventurers has assembled at the entrance to The Caverns of Chiesa the Unspeakable. Who these have souls are, what they seek, and who or what Chiesa the Unspeakable is, is up to you!

Dungeon World is awesome! If you're interested in a rules-lite, heavy narrative game with old-school flavor, keep reading!

Basic Mechanics:
In Dungeon World, as in most games, you describe what your character does in a given situation. If what you describe counts as a Move, you roll 2d6 and add the relevant stat bonus. 7-9 is a success, 10+ is even better! Different classes have their own unique Moves, and also modify the general Moves.

House Rules and Classes Allowed:
Ignore the listed Alignment and Race sections of the character sheet. Instead, choose a Motivation, something that your character will risk harm to achieve, and a Flaw, ring that will expose your character to danger. Fulfilling either or both of these will award an XP.

Wizards, Paladins, and Clerics are discouraged. Those interested in those classes are directed to the Mage, Templar, and Priest.

Just about everything in this folder is allowed, and other classes will be considered.

This Sounds Interesting, Now What?:
Glad you're intrigued! I'd like a few posts per weekday when possible. Give me a name, class, and background, maybe a paragraph or two for now.

Dotting for now. I will come up with something this evening.

EDIT: Do you have access to Inverse World?

I'm looking at the same basic concepts I'm thinking of for Frogfoot's next game. I think the concept that I'll try out for this is Mage with the focus Clock.

The motivation is a secret that I'm happy to share with you. :)

As for flaw... I'll need a little help with knowing what's most appropriate. :)

I am interested but have never played dungeon world, I especially like true namer, as that's a concept I've almost never seen done well in any other system.

RJ the GM, everyone here Will be more than happy to help you learn.

True friend is hilarious, noble is the token rich kid from like every anime ever. I could totally see someone doing noble and going a black butler concept.

Would the Arcane Duelist class be available?

Nohwear, I do not have Inverse World, sorry.
Edinoiz, Arcane Duelist would be fine.
RJ, being new is fine. There are a few oddities in Dungeon World, like the lack of initiative and set rounds, but we can help.

What about building something with Class Warfare? I have had this idea for a brawler like character who is augmented with technomancy.

EDIT: If you are not up for that, can I get some bonus for making my fighter's signature weapon two handed?

Sweet, then I'll toss together a character :)

Nohwear, my first offer would be Huge enhancement for free in exchange for +1 weight and Two-handed.

That fits with what I had in mind, thank you.

Gregor, Fighter

Chiesa the Unspeakable, I have herd much about her and her experiments. I have sworn to destroy the sorts of abominations that she has created. With my Zweihander, Drachen, I will aid those who have assembled with me and cleanse this place once and for all. And if I am able to add to Drachen's power as well, then so much the better.

Let me know if you want more.

Well then, here's my character, Caleb

Arcane Duelist
Fiery Eyes, Cropped Hair, Training Clothes, Lithe Body
Human

Stats:
Str 8 (-1)
Dex 15 (+1)
Con 12 (+1)
Int 16 (+2)
Wis 9 (0)
Cha 13 (+1)

Damage 1d8
Armor 1
HP 20

Load 7; Gear Dagger (hand, 1 weight) and Parrying Dagger (hand, +1 armor, 1 weight), dungeon rations (5 uses, 1 weight)

Techniques:
Mirage - clones strike nearby foes for damage (damage only)
Quicksilver - add Piercing 2 on your attack
Soul-Siphoning - heal 1d4 hp,
Warding - Ring of light around me and primary target that prevents other creatures and their projectiles from entering.

Background:
Born to ordinary people Caleb's only luck in life was the village's relative proximity to a small elven enclave and Ravencroft, the enclave's illustrious dueling school. Caleb was smaller and weaker than the other children in town which led him to jobs and chores where he did not have to exert himself too much, physically, but this also made him a target for bullies. One of these chores was to help out in the tavern whenever Caleb's father owed the barkeep favors. There he would listen to the stories told by the bards and the patrons, hopeful prospects, curious veterans, and rejected dropouts alike, all they did was serve to ignite a curiousity and passion for the art of magic and blade that young Caled could not douse in any way he tried. As soon as he was old enough he snuck away and followed the next batch of people trying to gain entrance into the school via the tryouts. Somehow passing by the skin of his teeth, Caleb chose to leave everything behind and work til he bled so that he could become a famous duelist like the headmaster, Rodriguez. Along the way, as he laid the foundations to his lone path of martial mastery, he picked up the habit of diving headlong into danger, irregardless of the odds, trusting in his skill with blade-magic to see himself through.

Motivation - Martial Scholar:
A mediocre person from Caleb's dueling school, Thelian, stole the Grandmaster's Tome, a compendium of the secret techniques of their school usually only distributed sparingly and to those talented enough to attain the rank of Swordscion. Caleb was sent after him and this caused Thelian to flee, eventually ending up here. Caleb will risk harm to recover the tome or otherwise find more secrets regarding arcane bladework, whether through battle, manuals, or powerful weapons.

Flaw - Battle Tendency:
Caleb can get carried away in battle and has a tendency to get in too deep, finding himself surrounded when others do not back him up is something that has happened and will happen to him quite often.

RP sample:
Standing before the entrance of the Caverns of Chiesa the Unspeakable, a grim sense of determination swept through Caleb. Thelian had supposedly fled down here when Caleb began to catch up with him, whatever had possessed the fool to think he could get away after stealing the Grandmaster's Tome. The young man looked around, hands resting on his daggers, and considered the group that had gathered here. They all had their own reasons for being here, the fact that they had bumped into each other in the closest town and then again on the way here was about as close to coincidence as it could get, but from what Caleb knew about this place coincidences are rare and fickle things.

Looking back towards the mouth of a vast cavern-system-come-dungeon-come-temple-to-a-fallen-god Caleb's pulse quickened. Perhaps Thelian would finally pose a challenge now that the elf had spent two weeks on the run with unrestricted access to the Grandmaster's Tome. Caleb felt the rush of blood as his adrenaline began to surge at the thought of finally proving himself worthy of the Swordscion rank and the virtual world of martial contests this would open up for him. He almost felt like laughing, for if the honor of the school wasn't on the line he might've felt inclined to wait another week or two before descending on this place. But now he had to calm and pace himself, the Caverns of Chiesa the Unspeakable would be a vast and beutiful canvas for his red painting, and he had brought his two favourite brushes!

How 'player makes things up' -centric are you going? I strongly prefer a strong DM presence as opposed to having to work with what players make up for spout lore and the like. :)

Also, note that a 12 is only a +0!

I'll be going with a high int and a low dex. Beyond that,I need to weigh things. Con and wisdom seem to be good investments, considering the archetype I'm working with. :)

Should someone alert Frogfoot? Just a thought.

Yes, keep in mind the slightly different stat mods.

Hotaru, occasionally I'll ask for player input on something, eg the reason for entering the dungeon, what the goal is, who it's named for, but generally I give out information. Players have more or less free rein when it comes to describing other moves though. Things like Hack and Slash and Defend that have clear, player-selected outcomes on success.

I also pmed Frogfoot.

I take it that you would prefer that I make a profile and roll up Gregor.

Go ahead, I'll make a discussion thread later tonight or tomorrow.

This is Nohwear.

This is EdinoiZ

I'm so into this idea! I'm dealing with my newborn son this weekend but I'm going to create a character for this campaign ASAP.

Just checking to make sure, but this is still going down, right?

Hopefully it is just that our GM has trouble or little desire to post on the weekends.

I can fully get behind such sentiments :)

It has been quite the busy weekend!

But I finally fished up some time to do all of this.

I actually went ahead and put her 'secrets' in her background, just bear in mind that knowing how Vanessa is tied to that event is very probably off the table unless you work something out with me :P It's something she keeps close to her ticking chest. :)

Nohwear told me about this game. I've been playing in one of Frogfoot's games for the past few months. I'd like to take a stab at playing an Artificer, and I'll put up a character for your perusal later this evening.

Oh, no! I spent hours creating the profile for this potential character. I previewed it many times to see how it looks, but the last time, something glitched and I lost it all!

This is WyldeCard (Aifric), by the way.

The essence of the character is an Artificer out for vengeance against Chiesa the Unspeakable for selling faulty alchemical components Adishana used in a gadget the king had commissioned her to make. The gadget caught on fire, burning down a third of the palace. Oh, and also burning over half of Adishana's body. So, yeah, vengeance!

Okiday, so we have caverns that at least partially used to be a temple to a now fallen god, now populated by Chiesa the Unspeakable, mad alchemist extraordinaire, and all manner of unspeakable things created by him/her as well as whatever was not cleared out/has remained since the earlier times. This will be fun ^^

Still going, Nohwear is correct, weekends aren't big posting time for me.

@Adishana: Save often. Paizo is big on killing things once they've been sitting for too long. It's something like a thirty minute time out effect. :(

Ok, so it seems the dungeonworld srd is down due to malware (infected). Here is the googledoc to the Arcane Duelist Class.

Okay, I have reconstructed the character. I hope it meets with the GM's approval.

@Vanessa,

Would you be interested in developing some common backstory with Adishana?

Proposal:
I randomly rolled up Clockwork Reversal Goggles as one of my gadgets. As I thought about what this could mean, I thought of goggles letting me reverse what I see in time and then letting me slip in that timestream for an instant.

For example: I'm standing in front of a locked door. I flip a switch on my goggles, and they start ticking. I'm watching the door backwards in time. I flip another switch, tiny gears move into place in my goggles, and the ticking speeds up as I fast-reverse through time. I eventually see someone come out of the door, and I step through the door. I flip another switch and jump back to the "present," where I'm on the other side of the door. I not unlock it and open it for my companions.

Anyone in the "present" would see me move through the locked door, and no one in the "past" would see anything unless they could detect magic at the time. I figure I can't change anything in the past with this, and I can't stay in the past. It's just a mechanism to observe the past and to get me on the other side of that door (or other obstacle).

After I thought of this, I saw that you've chosen time magic and a time-related background. I don't know how your time magic works (haven't looked closely at the Mage or your choices), but would it be possible for you to infuse my goggles with time magic in exchange for a self-winding mechanism for your ticking heart? If this is possible, there would have to be limitations on what the goggles could do, of course. What do you think?

I'm actually open to sharing backstory with anyone.

Adishana:
That certainly fits under 'adjust the flow of time', which is one of the things I can do. But I'm also not an enchanter! I've set the character up as a magic breaker and a toolkit by picking mage. I do plan to go for ritual, so we'll have a lot of overlap in our kits. I've no problem with your character using her as a basis for your tech (or even what makes it work)! Most likely, she'd have wanted information in exchange for the magic. Which may well explain why she's heading to the caves for more information.

It sounds like you're designing an 'ethereal' movement device, but changing ethereal to 'temporal'. Which is neat because movement devices only need to be rolled for when you try to do something weird (like, can I reach into his chest and resolidify myself? Sure! But... let's see how that works out for you... roll!

Is that the basic intent of the device? :) the first document in his drop box thing has a better breakdown for intent of devices. Hope that helped! Artificer is/was something I was thinking of playing in Frogfoot's next thing.

Discussion thread online! Background and whatnot would be better there, to keep the recruitment thread cleaner.
