![]() Once they were all on the lift and pushed the button it began to rise. Slowly at first, but it started to speed up as the first few floors went by until the floors were just flashing lights going by. The stop button began to flash as they neared the top, above them a huge pile of stone closed off the remaining shaft and the elevator did not appear to be slowing down. ![]()
![]() "The archmagi chambers are near the top of the citadel, the lift will only take you about four fifths of way, from there you'll need to find your own path upward. I don't have any connection to the floors beyond twenty five floors up. the lift should reach the fortieth floor. Do not stop the lift before you reach the top, some of the things held on the lower floors are beyond you right now." ![]()
![]() "the chambers will not likely have what you would consider magical equipment, merely runed accessories for storing and using mana, most of which will be empty by now. You may find some decent materials there to have gear made from later, the archmagi enjoyed mithril adornments, and some of the, now depleted, rune servants had adamantium in their structures." She paused for a moment obviously thinking, before turning her attention to Charlie. "The list of possible systems and sub-systems I could restart with even one mana crystal would take thirty minutes to list, and probably twelve hours to explain. Put simply the more mana I have available, the farther through the citadel I can send you to acquire more. Also I am willing to use the spare energy to make your stay here more comfortable, and your missions easier." ![]()
![]() Reya turned to the crucible waving a hand over it. One of the runes in the ceiling blazed to life and shone light down illuminating the crucible. After a few minutes a much smaller version appeared beside it seemingly pieced together out of light until it solidified. "The portable ones will let you draw mana through it to the larger one, which will crystalize it. My creator was human, he had no family or children. Please take the miniature crucible. You have a few options for your next mission. Deep within the prisons below us the Rune smith lies dormant, with its aid we can recycle any materials you find into better gear. Above us is the Archmages chambers, I can no longer connect to them, but there are a good number of active runes that are no longer necessary. With the mana I can begin to reactivate some of the subsystems." ![]()
![]() "unfortunately, the runes you are using are linked systemically, they would be much more expensive and much more intricate to create separate from the rune systems." assuming you can some how convince reya to teach you how to create rune systems, the expertise required is more along the lines of crafting staves then wondrous items. ![]()
![]() "Any mana you give to the crucible would be gone for good. I need your potential in your bodies, a little loaning to open doors is one thing, but the crucible would permanently weaken you, and it was not designed for that. The use of blood as a substitute was a secret my creator kept closely guarded, because of the sorts of devices he might have been forced to make other wise." ![]()
![]() "A mobile version is merely a link to this one. It would take twice the mana I have remaining to make another of these, and it would be a shoddy copy at that. The artistry and rune work in the crucible was some of my creators best, and last work. The crucible can drain and crystallize the remaining mana from runes, allowing you to re-capture the wasted mana spread around the citadel. Without it, the only way for us to regain mana would be the small accessories the arch magi used to wear. ![]()
![]() well, I need to read peoples posts more closely it seems Once all were on the elevator and Charlie pushed the button it began to rise, much slower then it had descended. It took almost twenty minutes for the lift to make it back up to where they had come from. Reyas voice was excited when they arrived. "Yes!, perfect, please bring it over to the wall here beside my platform. I will begin to integrate it and create your mobile version. Aren't you glad you don't have to haul that big thing around?" ![]()
![]() "rats? magical rats... oh you mean the demolishers. You found active demolishers? oh my, I don't suppose you could catch them? no... probably not yet. Yes closing the door will do for now, it won't stop them, but it will slow them down. The same symbol can be used to close the door again. Did you acquire the crucible?" ![]()
![]() Animate ropes purpose is its combat ability as well as it's range. it would take at least a few minutes to move and tie a rope with mage hand. Even if this wasn't zero G he could still do the same thing with twine. Unfortunately for both of you the crucible is anchored to the floor by a latch on the other side. ![]()
![]() you know I honestly forgot you had dark vision Rats the size of small dogs cling to the crates. Their bodies are smooth stone where they would normally be covered in fur, their eyes seem to be gem stones, and runes are engraved all through out their bodies. The rats teeth and claws are some sort of dull metal. you're pretty sure they're some sort of animated construct, probably to do with the weird magic of this world judging by the runes. they were probably original trash collectors or garbage disposals of some kind, but they're obviously aggressive now ![]()

as all you can do is hear skittering and hisses, a really damn high knowledge arcana or nature. ![]()
![]() The door slides open soundlessly. The room beyond it is dark, only lit by flickering blue runes that illuminate cube-like shapes floating through the air. The sound of scrabbling claws Charlie heard earlier is louder now, and accompanied by hissing. The air smells stale and feels dry and dead. Beyond the floating objects you catch glimpses of the crucible, the multitudes of runes carved into it glow strongly. ![]()
![]() None of you see any obvious way to open the door, it's probably one of the runes. Upon closer inspection three of the runes seem to be in about the same place as the lift runes. None of them are anything like the runes you've seen before. Charlie: You hear a muffled sound from within the room, something vaguely like claws scratching on stone. ![]()
![]() you had plenty of time, it takes about fifteen minutes to make it all the way down. The hallway before you is devoid of light other then the faintly flickering runes on the stone walls and ceiling. The air smells of dust and ashes, the floors are smooth and clear of any debris. The hallway goes on for about fifty feet to stone door. A fissure down the center shows how the door should open, but there are no obvious way to make it open. ![]()
![]() The lift slowly began to descend with its occupants. Everr twenty or so feet another doorway became visible. Most of them were caved in, some were shut, but a few were open revealing strange environs. One was full of some oily looking liquid that seemed held back by something in the doorway, another was full of floating debris. A few were barren but normal, and after a few hundred feet a voice echoed around them. "stop the lift at the next open hallway, I won't be able to talk to you anymore once you exit the lift. The crucible should be at the center of the storage room at the end of the hall." ![]()
![]() if your world has black blood:
if your world has black blood that's plenty enough to know about it. True black blood corrupts everything it touches, either killing with its deadly cold, or mutating with its alien power. No one really knows where the black blood originates from, but there are theories that it's an aspect of the corruption of the old gods, or a substance from the void between the stars, or even the ichor of a dead god. The kind Conall exhibits seems disturbing but diluted compared to the stuff you've heard of. conall:
You succeed in memorizing the top left rune, which after a little experimentation you'll learn that it is the emergency stop. Charlie: you succeed in memorizing the bottom left rune, which is the platform rune. ![]()
![]() The two runes Conall smears with his blood begin to glow black, the closest one to the door begins to pulse like the one below it. The platform remains the same, awaiting occupants and their command. You may make intelligence checks (dc 15 you may take 20) to memorize runes if you so desire, but each one is very specific. in this case both the up and the down runes are specific to just how far up and down they can go, an elevator with a different height would have different up and down runes. the platform rune itself is more standard. ![]()
![]() She crosses her arms. "this citadel is very large, the last of humanity gathered here to live out the last of their lives. I have been systematically shutting down non-essential areas to keep the rest running for almost two hundred years. Recently I lost access to the sensory runes in a storage area deep beneath the citadel, most of the systems should still be active. Within there is a crucible that draws mana from those artifacts that aren't connected to primary systems." She waved a hand and a floor map of the room they were in appeared in the air. to the north of the chamber was a small corridor that leads to a long tube going directly down. the more advanced of you recognize it as an elevator shaft. "you'll have to decide whether to re-activate the lift rune or climb down on your own. the walls have small lips at each level you could probably drop to until you reached the bottom, but one slip is a long fall. Remember the minimum duration of a reactivation is an hour, and you don't know what you may need to reactivate down below." ![]()
![]() she raises an eyebrow at 'Shield.' "Actually I can make those things, but with my current reserves of mana i'd need about nine tenths of your life force. If you don't mind dodging mosquitos to survive i'm willing. unfortunately for everyone else when you do die, which I imagine would be quickly, you're potential would stop circulating through the items and they'd cease to be as well." gonna try to go in order, no the mutilations don't count against you. yes I could see the myth-weaver sheet. I will let the players decide on swearing.
