Had a DM do that once. He was drawing out the map and put an "S" down. Fun times.
Lueck |
I've been guilty of that myself. Especially way back when, when running some of the AD&D modules that didn't have text boxes to read to the players. I would read from the DM description of the room aloud, and occasionally slip with something like "And on the mantle is a plus thr... um, a shield."
Yeah, good times.
I'm good firing things up whenever it works for you.

If you guys want to start without Cairenn, I don't mind, I know it's hard to be eager and rarin' to go and have to wait. I'd really love to start now too, I sadly just can't commit to posting when the bulk of my next waking 94 hours is going to be spent in either live gaming or driving to live gaming. :P
Kára Nightingale |
I'm in the middle of an 70hr work week, next month is the College World Series so I'll be just as busy then. Luckily, most of my day is reactionary so I can pop on and off throughout the day.
Pharnox Shadowstrike |
I'm in whenever everyone else is ready to play. The high school I work for is about to start their finals so for me that means long hours of doing next to nothing broken up by little spurts of insanity so I will be on checking stuff quite often.
Erich Kaine |
I can also get started whenever you like--but I don't mind waiting! I'm super relaxed and easy-going about mostly everything.
(On the other hand, my character, Erich, is in a huge rush to get going--he needs to loot the dungeon so he'll have money for food!)
DM Grimmy |
I'm checking out what you guys have written and I see that Talric, Pharnox and Christoff have already connected.
So the teams are looking like this so far:
-----
Team 1: Lyr, Cai, Erich, ?, ?
This team comes with Lyr from Bard's Gate to investigate a blight infecting the wildlife. Lyr contacts Drusilla, a powerful druid, who points her to the dungeon of Saecaroth and gives her blessing to keep any treasure they recover.
This team needs two more.
Team 2: Talric, Pharnox, Christoff, ?
Tal comes to prove himself (Rappan Athuk?), Christoff comes investigating magical anomalies, Pharnox comes to do a hit on Christoff.
They all get captured by Killian the Bandit King. Normally he would ransom them off to Zelkor's Ferry, but this time he has another purpose in mind for his captives. He has heard about the party entering Saecaroth. An important family heirloom is lost in that dungeon and he doesn't want it ending up in the loot pile of some heroes (Team One). He sneaks Team Two to the backdoor of the dungeon and stands guard so they can't come out without the macguffin.
Ghaelja from MoD meets Team 2 in Killian's Camp and decides to go with them. So this team needs one more.
(Ghaelja is also a druid who has been tracking the blight, so she needs to catch on that Saecaroth is the source. She could learn this from Killian, and/or Christoff with his magical anomalies could provide a clue.)
----
So Grokar, Lueck and Kara need to pick teams, two to team one, one to team two.
Let me know if this sounds alright.
Kára Nightingale |
I'd like to be in team 1, for several reasons, if that's alright.
Grokar the Ravager |
I could be in either, though I think it would make more sense for Grokar to be on team 2, not having known of the blight and captured in the wilds of Rappan Athuk.
DM Grimmy |
Yeah I thought about that too, no front-liner per se.
I personally think it would be interesting and totally do-able but you guys are of course free to make any changes you want. It's not my life on the line, right?
I'm just adding some grist to the mill here that's all. I'm no master of tactics or party composition, I'm more just riffing off the characterization stuff you guys have laid out.
Kára Nightingale |
Melee cleric right here.
I've also got Augment Summons and an eventual animal companion. A reach weapon with Combat Reflexes for cutting enemys that try to get close. We've also got a bard for the buffs and inspire courage. We should be alright.
Kára Nightingale |
XD She does.
It's the closest I could find to the pic I based her off of.
Kára Nightingale |
Need to Join first right? Never used Obsidian Portal before so IDK.
Just made an account. Name: Flashohol
Lyrasael Sylrune |
My OP account is Ange, if you'd like to add me.
If we're struggling with frontline combatants, I'm happy to swap my domain choice for an animal companion. I could easily shift Lyr's spirit animal from eagles to... well, most anything, really. :P
Lyrasael Sylrune |
Ooh. Totally love Rialae-Aielbaru. Planar travellers! Reminds me of Desna a lot. Wonder who her daughter was, and why she was half mortal?
Talric of the Northlands |
Hmmm...
His head would be a worthy trophy!
XD Just kidding. Maybe I would consider it if I was topped out level wise and was temporarily given 10 mythic ranks to accomplish the deed.
Lyrasael Sylrune |
So guys in Group 1, any thoughts on whether I should swap to an animal companion or not? Just for some more frontline muscle...
Kára Nightingale |
I agree with Lueck. I think having your familiar as a scout will round us out better than an Animal Companion. Both are fine choices though and I would go with whichever one you like the most. :)
@DM Grimmy: Are we using hero points in this campaign?
DM Grimmy |
Yeah, geez did I forget to mention that? I wonder what else I didn't say. Very soon I will get together a single document with everything you need to know. I'm sorry I've been so disorganized, I think I tend to think everything I write in any one of my threads gets read by everyone. No idea why I would think that though (-_-)
Action Points:
I know they are called Hero Points in PF but I must have watched too much Aquisitions Incorporated, I can't stop calling them action points. Plus I think it sounds way cooler. They work just like the APG says though.
Act Out of Turn: You can spend a hero point to take your turn immediately. Treat this as a readied action, moving your initiative to just before the currently acting creature. You may only take a move or a standard action on this turn.
Bonus: If used before a roll is made, a hero point grants you a +8 luck bonus to any one d20 roll. If used after a roll is made, this bonus is reduced to +4. You can use a hero point to grant this bonus to another character, as long as you are in the same location and your character can reasonably affect the outcome of the roll (such as distracting a monster, shouting words of encouragement, or otherwise aiding another with the check). Hero Points spent to aid another character grant only half the listed bonus (+4 before the roll, +2 after the roll).
Extra Action: You can spend a hero point on your turn to gain an additional standard or move action this turn.
Inspiration: If you feel stuck at one point in the adventure, you can spend a hero point and petition the GM for a hint about what to do next. If the GM feels that there is no information to be gained, the hero point is not spent.
Recall: You can spend a hero point to recall a spell you have already cast or to gain another use of a special ability that is otherwise limited. This should only be used on spells and abilities possessed by your character that recharge on a daily basis.
Reroll: You may spend a hero point to reroll any one d20 roll you just made. You must take the results of the second roll, even if it is worse.
Cheat Death: A character can spend 2 hero points to cheat death. How this plays out is up to the GM, but generally the character is left alive, with negative hit points but stable. For example, a character is about to be slain by a critical hit from an arrow. If the character spends 2 hero points, the GM decides that the arrow pierced the character’s holy symbol, reducing the damage enough to prevent him from being killed, and that he made his stabilization roll at the end of his turn. Cheating death is the only way for a character to spend more than 1 hero point in a turn. The character can spend hero points in this way to prevent the death of a familiar, animal companion, eidolon, or special mount, but not another character or NPC.
You guys are going to start with three (3) action points.
Gain one at level up.
Strongly recommend you keep two in the bank to cheat death.
(Only one permanent death out of 22 PC's so far in 5 months of play, but two others would have died without action points to cheat death.)
No hero point spells or feats.

I saw a few people with some in their stat block so I thought I'd ask.
Added them to my resources tab.
