That was one of the reasons I was asking about the nobility roll. Have I seen, or do I recognize the helmet and the colors.

No -- the helmet has no indicators of nobility and is of an unfamiliar (though gorgeous) design.

Okay, then -- unless someone pipes up in the next little bit, I'll run Jax's attack.

1d20 ⇒ 4
1d20 ⇒ 5

As Jax glides forward, a voice suddenly shouts, "Sir Balin! Beware! Turn and defend yourself!"

Sir Balin (for it is he) whirls to face the tiefling.

Sir Balin is a tall, broad-shouldered man in his early 30s. He wears heavy armor, though no helmet. He looks a bit the worse for wear -- there are some bruises on his face, bloodstains on his tunic, and he has not shaved in several days. Still, you can see that he's been trying to keep himself as clean and well groomed as possible.

Over his armor he wears a tunic and a long blue cloak. The tunic is blue and white, with some heraldic coat of arms embroidered on it. Embroidered above it is a stylized eagle.

Around his neck, on a silver chain, hangs a pendant. It is a lovely thing: an eagle, and above it a sunburst, all done in silver and sapphire.

Zimu only:

Aha, the coat of arms of Kerfeld. Too minor and obscure to be in the Book of the Great Houses, of course. Let's see: Azure, a bend or above an island, above the sea in fess gules bordered argent, thereupon a whale proper. It's slightly overdone, as you'd expect from a rather nouveau house, but it could be worse.

He wasn't wearing his coat of arms during your last encounter. You're slightly pleased that he is now. It will make killing him more... proper, somehow.

Jax, you did not gain a surprise round, but you did catch Sir Balin flat-footed. So, you get your sneak attack and your crit.

What are the rest of you doing? All charging to the attack?

I mentioned that Zimu and at least one other team member knew Sir Balin and had reason to hate him. Zimu, we never worked out the details of that. Everyone else... if you want a history with noble Sir Balin, now's the time to claim it. He could have helped put any of you in Branderscar; that's what he does.

Who else is in the room?

Casting a spell as soon a I can determine possible targets.

You don't see anyone else in the room.

Jax lunges forward and slashes at Sir Balin. He lands the knight a nasty cut on his unarmored head! Sir Balin cries out as blood sprays across the walls of the cell. He's still standing, though.

17 points of damage... nice.

The Judge whispers through clenched teeth.
Get the brooch you fools. We do not need him dead.

Morsum charges forward and attempts to rip the necklace/brooch from around Sir Balin's throat.

Combat Maneuver-Steal: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 <-- that strength drain sucks.

The Judge then fires a crossbow bolt at Sir Balin.

Attack-crossbow: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17
Damage: 1d8 ⇒ 6

The Judge looks to Edmin: Get the Brooch if you can.

Jax grins snarkily and twirls his sword in hand. He jauntily talks at Balim while looking for another time to strike.

Balim, I presume? We heard all about you from your squire. I must apologize for my sudden assault upon your person but that necklace you have is simply to die for and we insist, quite heartily, that you hand it over. Your death isn't necessary as long as we have that amulet.

Blood in the water! Doesn't take much to get a bunch of PCs riled up...

Morsum claws at the brooch but Sir Balin fends him off.

The Judge's crossbow bolt goes wide and clatters off a wall. Firing into melee? Tsk tsk.

Sir Edmin strikes. His longsword goes in through a crack in Sir Balin's armor. Sir Edmin lunges for the heart... but doesn't quite reach it. Crit confirmation just failed. That's plate mail, my friend.

Ragnar snarls but his teeth are unable to get through the metal.

Sigh. And I thought it would have been Bref who led the charge. I was going to cast cast Charm Person before team heavy handed went to work. All we needed was his jewelry, not his family jewels. Besides I would want to take him alive.

DM can I roll initiative to see if I beat my friendly mob? 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (2) + 3 = 5

Cуровую will still cast Charm Person at noble Sir Balin.

'Sir Balin, great and noble is your name and you do honor to your house, lay your might down, your worthy life spared and you will see your lands and loved ones again. Unleash your wrath on those who have interned you here.'

Yes, next round as a swift action. Please add another 1 damage if Balin is a paladin.

Bref, no flank this round -- you'll get it next round. So, 5 points of damage.

1d20 ⇒ 14 <- Zimu, this is why we don't throw Charm Person at people our friends are already attacking...

If the creature is currently being threatened or attacked by you or your allies, however, it receives a +5 bonus on its saving throw.

Okay, that's everyone but Dren. Dren?

BTW, note that Sir Balin has no idea who you people are. He's met Zimu and Bref before, but you have your collars activated, so he's seeing Pipwiligan the halfling and fresh-faced, wholesome Zhilda.

You can switch the collars off as a move action.

This one of the problems with pbp. If I had remembered we had the collars, I would have taken a different tact. I figured that he would see a dhampir, a goblin and several dark characters.

Ah, I'd assumed the same you had Judge! And as I had mentioned, Jax only went all out if no one said something first. We've heard nothing but about how dangerous Balim is from others, Jax's a bit of a coward and doesn't want to deal with a fair fight that can turn against them.

Balin also must make a DC 12 Will save or takes 2 STR damage

1 charge of chill touch left

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Guys, stop. he drew his sword as a MOVE action. Hang on there.

...Sir Balin draws his sword.

"Who ARE you people? What are you..." Sir Balin scans the group attacking him and sees a half-elf, a halfling, some humans... and one obvious monster.

"Thing of evil! You fight an Alerion knight!" He strikes at Morsum.

1d20 ⇒ 12

His blade bites deep into Morsum's alien flesh. Morsum takes 1d8 + 11 ⇒ (3) + 11 = 14 points of damage.

Now he turns to Bref. "Halfling, I know the tricks of you wee folk! You'll not stab me in the back!" 1d20 ⇒ 20

...ruh roh.

Loremaster fighter, huh?

Well, here we go. Rolling to confirm crit: 1d20 ⇒ 17

Welp, here goes damage: 2d8 + 22 ⇒ (3, 8) + 22 = 33

Sir Balin's sword lashes out and impales the goblin through the mouth, passing through his brain and out the back of his skull.

For a moment, Bref bites down on the blade, trying to chew it off... and then his eyes roll up in his head. Bref is dead.

Sir Balin puts his foot on the body and pulls his sword free. "Thought you had me cornered, eh, villains? You'll find an Alerion knight is not such easy prey."

"Scudo! To me!"
