Mara related the plight of the missing villagers to Winter, and asked for her advice about how to bury the remains that could be found, given the likely difficulty in identifying which remains belonged to which individual.

She also asked her, "Would you like to use the Confabulation Plates to talk to the spirit of Accuser Omari? Perhaps she had some notes about her investigation."

Mara will defer to Winter about posing questions to Omari.

Winter advised Mara on how best to deal with the dead townsfolk. And suggested that she would instruct the new priest in a letter about the situation.

Winter looks surprised at Mara’s suggestion, ”I don’t like the looks of that device. I’m not sure what it does to a person’s soul. So while I can forgive the use of it for someone not initiated into ways of The Lady of Graves once especially on one so villainous, I cannot condone its further use.” She looks around, ”I can’t stop you if you insist.”

Mara replied to Winter, "Very well, I will defer to your wishes. I will leave the matter of contacting Accuser Omari's spirit in your hands."

She hesitated for a moment, and then continued, "There is another matter that I wanted to speak to you about. The patient Loic, from the asylum, had a sister, Sara, who died when she was young, around twenty years ago. I don't think her soul has passed to the Great Beyond, but is instead tied to Loic's consciousness and the Dimension of Dreams. During the events at the Asylum, our world and the Dimension of Dreams intersected, and Sara manifested physically for a time. She found me, wandering in a daze, and saved my life by hiding me from the shapechangers.

"The ritual in Chain of Nights — the one that Dervak wants performed on him to remove the Dark Whisperer — could also be used to removed Sara from Loic's consciousness, and bring her permanently to the material plane, giving her another chance at life. I would very much like to do that for her; however, as you know, there are risks involved.

"To ensure the ritual's success, the ideal thing would be to study it further, and gain more experience before attempting it. However, we're going to be leaving Thrushmoor in a few days, following Count Lowls, and it may be quite some time before I return (assuming I survive whatever is to come). If Loic were to die before I got back, Sara would die with him. How good is his health? Obviously, I wouldn't perform the ritual without his consent, and we're going to conduct the procedure on Dervak first."

Wrath Maps Wrath Loot PS Loot PS Maps

Winter frowns, "His health is fine for a man that must constantly be medicated. You may return to Thrushmoor later but York and Dr. Elbourne were making arrangements to have the worst cases sent to other facilities as soon as there is space available. Loic will be among them."

"Mara, remember what we are talking about," says Dervak. And who we are talking to, he thinks.
"Sara's spirit might be freed to travel to the Great Beyond and be judged by Pharasma as it should be. We don't know what will happen. If Pharasma judges that Sara should return for another chance at life, that is Her decision. I have heard there are cases where Pharasma allows the dead to return to life but it is always with Her agreement."

He looks nervously at Winter as he says this. Even among the savage Kellid tribe of his father, they knew the Lady of Graves was not to be trifled with or mocked.

Winter casts Augury:

Winter hesitates, ”I will pray to Pharasma for guidance.” After a minute of meditation and burning expensive incense Winter finally says, ”The Lady of Graves is silent on this matter. Either it does not concern her or she’s testing me to use my own judgement. Given this information I think it’s best if Loic accompanies me to Caliphas. If it's true that his dead sister’s soul has become attached to Loic then Mother Thestia should know what to do. I will send word to the temple in Cassomir if there are any developments.”

Mara feels that Winer is conflicted about the whole affair and is very uncertain about what to do.

Winter leaves feeling as if she has betrayed a good friend.

Many of the books you have collected contain marginalia written in Lowls' handwriting. That added to his notebooks and letters could provide a clue to his plans. It will just take some research.

It's a library; for each 8 hours you spend researching one character can make an arcana, history, or planes check DC 15. Two other characters can aid another on this check. If the primary roller has 5 ranks in the skill they accumulate 1d8+int mod in knowledge points, otherwise they gain 1d4+int mod. Reach a threshold of knowledge points and you discover something.

So Mara rolled a 31 with Dervak and Theo’s help (Theo does automatically succeed). KP earned was 5 for the roll plus 3 for beating the DC by 15 (+1 for each 5 above DC)

Lowls’s notes indicate that his journeys occurred in the Dreamlands, a vast and relatively stable section of the Dimension of Dreams. He marvels at the fact if he’s injured in the Dreamlands it doesn’t affect his real world body at all. But he does speculate that mental afflictions would continue to affect him. He goes on to speculate that if he were to die in the Dreamlands he wouldn’t die but awake suddenly and traumatically, potentially causing madness.

He found that when entering the Dreamlands his dream-self would have anything on his person. The reverse doesn’t happen but if he picks up something in the Dreamlands but it would reappear in subsequent dreams.

When you enter the Dreamlands you appear as you are, including any status effects or damage. HP damage, damage or drain to physical ability scores sustained in the Dreamlands doesn’t affect your waking self but damage or drain to mental ability scores does. If you die in the Dreamlands your character won’t die but just wake up in the real world and have a chance at going mad. We’ll burn that bridge when we get to it.

You’ll have all the gear on your character when you enter the Dreamlands and if you loot something in the Dreamlands you can use it only in subsequent Dreamland excursions. Similarly for spells and limited use abilities you enter the Dreamlands where you’re at at that moment but using abilities in the Dreamlands does not expend uses for your real self. For a time you’ll have Dream-gear and Real-gear.

Dervak can aid with planes, he just probably shouldn't. You can make a knowledge check untrained so long as the DC is 10 or lower and the DC for aid is 10. If we're going with just checks it probably should be Theo aided by White Rabbit and Mara or maybe Ellery. Not sure if I should impose a penalty for White Rabbit since he can't reach the top shelf. Mara’s father responds first, ”Hey there kiddo. I want to say I’m proud of you no matter what happens; you’re trying to help your friend. I don’t think there’s a right answer but you’ve got a good grasp on what you need to do.”

Next Mara’s mother adds, ”My Sunshine, your friend will be divided but it will give him some measure of peace. You know the tools you need to make this happen.”

Mara’s fraternal great-aunt, ”A place close to the dark energies you seek to draw out.”

Mara’s maternal great-grandfather, ”An offering of live meat in exchange for the Beast to give you greater power.”

As you prepare to cast the ritual, going over what everyone needs to do, Mara realizes that Ellery won’t be able to take part. He can’t say the words he needs to; his hands will be occupied with the gestures and won’t be able to sign equivalently. This means you won’t have 4 secondary casters unless you add NPCs. If Ellery doesn’t speak he can’t do both verbal and somatic components, but can do one or the other. All casters need to be capable of doing all the spell components or have a way around it, metamagic feats are fine for this.

Furthermore from her great-grandfather's comment Mara realizes she could use this ritual as a base for another ritual to draw the Dark Whisper into herself. Would require a library to research it, which you conveniently have, and it would be more difficult than the Release Nightmare ritual

Theophilus smiles.
I so enjoy a good ritual!

Mara relayed to the others what her ancestors had told her. "I don't think I'm going to follow up on my orcish great-grandfather's suggestion. I'm not interested in trying to draw the Dark Whisperer into myself!

"I think that my human great-aunt might mean holding the ritual on Briarstone Isle. I suspect that place has a connection with dark energies, what with the Briarstone Witch, and everything that happened at the Asylum."

She grabbed her pack and donned her cloak. "I'm going to see if I can find something to help my healing abilities, to help with the ritual."

Mara is going to buy the Healer's Gloves (which are already on the treasure sheet), and see if there's an Encouraging metamagic rod available.

Mara purchases the magic items she needs from the mysterious man called Watanabe and his emporium. He wears a silver holy symbol of Nethys around his neck and below it a charred sigil to some distant empire that has no meaning here.

Added it to Mara's list, wasn't sure if you wanted to split the gold between you and Dervak though. If so then Dervak owes Mara 1500 gp.

After her shopping trip, Mara walked to the Sleepless building to see if Cesadia was in.

Intending to explain the ritual, where we plan to conduct it, and ask if she can help.

Making sure return to the manor in time to do 8 hrs of research today.

I think from the GM's comments we are not going to be able to get the 8 hours of research done today but also don't have to worry about that - we'll have plenty of time on the way to Cassomir if we bring the books.
