Dervak |

"To the moon, then. Mara, can your spells protect us against the dragon's acid breath? I don't know what else we will find in the prison, but we do know about the dragon and should prepare for it."
Not saying Mara needs to use all of her slots for Resist Energy or Protection from Energy, but some would be nice so that we are all protected.

Kat Brewer |

Kat has her own resist energy so no need to worry about her
”I got my own acid protection taken care of. Seemed to work pretty well last time, eh?”

Dervak |

Dervak does have his own Resist Energy, but he has only 2 2nd-level slots. Would like to use one for Cat's Grace via the Vestments, and it would be nice to keep one slot free for Bladed Dash or Mirror Image. If need be, he can cast Resist Energy from his slots, use up the scroll for Cat's Grace, and still have the one slot left over. Will not pre-buff with See Invis as I don't think the dragon has that capability. But it might.

Mara replied to Dervak, "Yes, I can provide some protection. I'll memorize some on the way."
She prepared herself to ask the shantak for another favor, praying for the spirits to smile upon her.
Casting Heroism, using the metamagic rod.
She asked the great beast, "O glorious shantak, could we trouble you for another ride to the moon? We have some unfinished business there.
Diplomacy, heroism, Guiding Star hex: 1d20 + 12 + 3 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 12 + 3 + 7 = 30

DM_Delmoth |

It looks at the hatter and Mara excitedly, "I have been to the moon! Did you want to go back?! Hop on!" The return trip to the moon takes another 10 hours and the shantak "sings" as the Dreamlands disappear below you.
Well, it's a marvelous night for a moondance
With the stars up above in your eyes
A fantabulous night to make romance
'Neath the cover of October skies
And all the leaves on the trees are falling
To the sound of the breezes that blow
And I'm trying to please to the calling
Of your heart-strings that play soft and low
And all the night's magic seems to whisper and hush
And all the soft moonlight seems to shine in your blush
Can I just have one more moondance with you, my love
Can I just make some more romance with you, my love
When you arrive at the empty landing paddock the shantak proclaims, "Here we are!" And it promptly falls asleep.

I see the shantak is a Van Morrison fan. I used to be able to play that song on piano!
Kat kicks back and enjoys the shantak’s jazzy taste in music.

Dervak |

"Mara or Theophilus, can either of you prepare Clairvoyance?"
Kind of an ideal situation for Scry-Buff-DimDoor, although you will have to use the bracelet to bring Dervak along. We know what we are fighting and it (possibly) doesn't know that we are coming. I am happy that the AP does not allow it to be our usual tactic, but here it seems we can prepare.

Mara replied to Dervak, "I can prepare Clairvoyance. Who needs acid protection?
"I wonder if the shifting door mechanism will be ruined from the dragon's acid? We might have an issue getting back out!"
Planning on casting Barkskin on Dervak, and Resist Energy (acid) on herself and Theo, Protection from Energy (acid) on Dervak, plus Heroism on herself and Dervak
She recited a prayer to help restore Theo's psyche, then tried to get some sleep on the way, so she could memorize new spells.
Casting Restoration on Theo.
Assuming that we can memorize spells again:
1st lvl (5): Ant Haul, Cure Light Wounds, Liberating Command, Protection from Evil, Remove Fear
2nd lvl (4): Barkskin, Calm Emotions, Resist Energy x2
3rd lvl (4): Heroism x2, Clairvoyance, Dispel Magic
4th lvl (3): Protection from Energy, Threefold Aspect, Slowing Mud

DM_Delmoth |

Casting Restoration on Theo.
I had assumed that Theo's madness was cured because you could have cast Restoration enough times in the Dreamlands in the days while you were waiting to meet the Stardust Augurs. I supposed Theo could actively resist treatment by trying to make a Will save against it.

Dervak |

Dervak doesn't cast any spells at this time. He waits for the results of Mara's scrying.
Plan is to use Long Arm, Shield, and Cat's Grace (the latter from the scroll via the Mnemonic Vestments) but those are all 1 min/level.
"If the mechanism is ruined and we might have an issue getting back out, then I think Theophilus should prepare multiple Dimension Door spells.
Or, we could try using brute force and patience to break through a wall. Should be possible given enough time and strength.
Or, we have Mara's ability to walk through walls a bit, and the scroll of Blink."
Three PCs DimDoor in and summon Dervak with the Bracelet; we kill the dragon and find the Yellow King; Two PCs and the Yellow King DimDoor out and the remaining two get out via Blink (Kat, who can UMD the scroll) and Time Flicker (Mara).
Failing that, bash a hole in the wall with the various weapons of the Rod of Lordly Might.
Failing that, rest in the prison and prepare spells again.
But good point to raise, Mara.

Theophilus Carter |

I am willing to use all 3 4th slots for D-door if we retcon memorized spells?
Theophilus seems to have switched his grand top hat for an even grander Train Conductor cap!

DM_Delmoth |

you had plenty of time to plan, rest, and prepare the appropriate spells. So whatever spells you think you need can be prepared.

Mara conferred with her team-mates, "When I walked through the wall when we fought the dragon, I came out the other side on the roof. If we climb to the same spot, I should be able to determine the correct distance and direction to teleport back inside from there."
When we get near the prison, she will cast Heroism on herself and Dervak, using the metamagic rod; she will use the Guiding Star hex to extend her Heroism spell (assuming that it still counts as night now). She will also cast Resist Energy (acid) on herself and Theo, Barkskin on Dervak, and Remove Fear on herself. The plan would be to cast the short duration buffs after checking inside with Clairvoyance.

Mara bint al-Katheeri |

When the group arrived at the prison, Mara led them around to the side of the building closest to where she walked out through the wall. She read her fly scroll and flew up to the top, and lowered down a rope.
Using a scroll of fly (trying to conserve uses of Heaven's Leap).
Once everyone had successfully joined her, she took a minute to orient herself, and then started the ritual to create the magical sensor, trying to place it in the center of the torture chamber where they had encountered the dragon.
Casting Clairvoyance/Clairvoyance, creating a visual sensor, as close to the center of the torture chamber as possible. I appreciate that she's going by her memory of the layout from her previous time here, so there's considerable uncertainty about where the sensor will appear (and it could appear inside a pillar). The casting time is 10 minutes.

DM_Delmoth |

The black circle represents Mara's sensor.
When Mara peers into the torture chamber she sees that it has largely been cleaned up since their encounter with the dragon. Except for where the dragon breathed which still show signs of damage. The dragon is nowhere in sight but single remaining animate torture device remains.

I'm assuming that everyone is with Mara at this point.
Mara told the others what she could see. "I don't see any sign of the dragon. Mind you, we can't rule out the possibility that we've been detected; it could be invisible and lying in wait. Dervak, do you want me to protect you against acid now, or wait until later? The protection will very good, but only lasts a few minutes."
She has a Protection from Energy prepared — it lasts 8 minutes and prevents 96 points of acid damage.
After describing to Theo the direction and distance to teleport in, she recited a prayer to ward Dervak against evil.
Casting Protection from Evil on Dervak.

Kat Brewer |

”Good thing I prepare an extract to let me see invisible stuff then, eh? I’ll drink her up and play spotter for ya.”

Dervak |

"I'll take that protection now, Mara. Hopefully we can find the beast within a few minutes."
Dervak also casts Long Arm, and Cat's Grace and uses a charge of Shield from his wand. Doesn't last as long as casting it, but he has a lot of charges and very few spell slots.

DM_Delmoth |

IIRC Theo, Kat, and Mara have to go in with d-door. And then Dervak is called in with the bracelet. Where did you want to appear?

DM_Delmoth |

I made an assessment. I'll roll for surprise round later tonight if no objections

DM_Delmoth |

Theo teleports the first strike team into the torture chamber. The only animate iron maiden to remain pivots to face the group and its door hangs open dumbly. Those that can see invisibility see nothing invisible.

Surpise Round:
Mara used the Bracelet of Friends to summon the remaining party member.

Dervak |

Dervak appears and, not seeing anything other than the Iron Maiden, tries to destroy it.
His Init was actually +7 as he had cast Cat's Grace, but it makes no difference here.
He rages, uses Barroom Brawler to pick up Dodge, and swings the Furious Falchion.
AC is now 34: 10 Base, +7 armor, +1 Deflection, +3 Natural, +5 Dex, +3 Luck. +4 Shield, +1 Dodge. Or 35 vs evil due to the Prot Evil. Can potentially get it 1 higher with Haste.
Reflex save is 2 Base, +5 Dex, +2 Resistance, +3 Luck, +3 Morale = +15.
Attack: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (15) + 16 = 31
Damage: 2d4 + 22 ⇒ (4, 2) + 22 = 28

Kat Brewer |

Kat would have turned off her merciful before heading in, since we know we are fighting things immune to nonlethal
Kat bounces the butt of her spear off the ground, studies the remaining torture device quickly, then drives her spear right into it before stepping aside.
Attack with Merciful Adamantine Longspear (heroism, studied combat, power attack): 1d20 + 11 + 2 + 4 - 2 ⇒ (12) + 11 + 2 + 4 - 2 = 27
Damage (power attack, studied combat): 1d8 + 6 + 6 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 6 + 6 + 4 = 24

DM_Delmoth |

The iron maiden now lies in a heap, no better than scrap metal.

Dervak |

"Try summoning something, Theo! Or else let's keep moving."
Not sure what is going on here. Just because it is in the Init tracker doesn't mean it is actually here in the room with us. We have short-duration buffs going so need to move pretty fast.

Dervak |

"Ah..."
No worries. If the dragon is here we'll know soon enough.

DM_Delmoth |

Perceptions
Dervak: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (16) + 15 = 31
Kat: 1d20 + 23 ⇒ (2) + 23 = 25
Mara: 1d20 + 18 ⇒ (19) + 18 = 37
Theo: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (20) + 15 = 35
The party doesn't hear, see, or smell a dragon lurking in the shadows. But they're reasonably sure they can't necessarily trust their senses.

Mara concentrated, causing her form to waver. Then she walked to the far end of the room, to get a better sense of what was in this chamber.
Standard Action: Time Flicker (Blur), Move Action: move

DM_Delmoth |

The western wall of the room is dominated by a large apparatus with conical brass horns, fluted pipes piercing the ceiling, and oily tubes snaking from the apparatus to each of the torture devices. An odd, low wailing emanates from the machine like a faraway scream.

Dervak |

Dervak moves to the East door and uses Total Defense. Next round he can open the door and still have a standard action available.

Kat Brewer |

Kat moves down to the southern door and sniffs.
Actively using perception using scent from her Bloodhound spell
Perception (bloodhound, heroism): 1d20 + 26 ⇒ (1) + 26 = 27

DM_Delmoth |

1d4 + 1 ⇒ (3) + 1 = 4
Kat doesn't smell the dragon but she does smell someone else, Count Haserton Pragmus Lowls IV, or more likely his dream splinter, The Yellow King. Kat knows the person they've come to rescue is near.

Dervak |

Dervak uses a move action to open the East door; what he does next with his standard action depends on what he sees.

DM_Delmoth |

Dervak finds a large dragon waiting behind the door. Like before she has cast mirror image and four images shimmer and weave in and out of the real dragon making it impossible to tell which ones are illusory.
Inside the room Dervak can see tools and scrap metal litter the floor. It appears someone has been taking apart and attempting to repair the mechanism that operates the sliding room. They haven't made much progress it seems.

Dervak |

Dervak attacks, fighting defensively and using Destined Strike.
Attack, Defensively, Destined Strike 1 of 3: 1d20 + 16 - 4 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 16 - 4 + 4 = 22
Probably not enough to hit, but if miss by 5 or less that pops an image.
AC is 38 vs Evil foes with fighting defensively. Using Fortune hex on a breath weapon save if needed.

Mara heard a commotion at the other end of the room. She started back, only to see Dervak in combat with the dragon! Waiting until Kat was withing 30ft of Dervak and Theo, she concentrated, speeding up the flow of time for her allies.
Speed or Slow Time: Haste on the party. I have to wait until Kat moves up, so everyone is close enough together (no two targets can be more than 30ft apart).

Kat Brewer |

Kat hears the sound of battle at the eastern door and rushes back over, taking a moment to study the dragon.
