Was the website down yesterday? I wasn't able to log on at all after work.
@trux - Why thank you, sir! Master Julen's endorsement makes me even more confident. :D Next time I run something, you should definitely hop on board. You're an awesome player- I'll take you in one of my games any day.
@Dalton - The odds of that happening are looking quite good.
@Batman - I'd say that's a Heal check. If I remember correctly, that's what one normally uses in order to determine the nature and severity of wounds, etc.
Since there have been a number of great submissions so far, I'm considering shortening the recruitment period a bit and starting the game earlier than I had planned. I'd still like to give everybody a few more days to submit characters and finish up their ideas, however. Tentatively, [ b]we'll close recruitment and begin the selection process in (7) days, on the 18th[/b]. Just don't get mad if I change it before then. ;)

@Hubaris - Making an alias is pretty easy. At the very top of the page, you should see "My Account" next to the "sign out" button. Click on that and scroll down- you'll see the option to add an avatar, and then the option to create an alias is right under that. I would prefer if you simply post the backstory here (in a spoiler tag if you would prefer to keep it secret) alongside your crunch. Once you make an alias, you can simply paste the backstory and crunch into the alias's "About (your name)" section.

Warshawski |

Here's the background on my character, the Spiritualist Investigator (this is JGray). I'll be working on my crunch next.
Just like a lot of the parasites out there.
I was safe from the rain and in my office when he walked in. I've seen his type before. Silk clothes colored blue and gold with expensive dyes and shining gold hair that probably took his servants hours to style. His big, shining, gorgeous blue eyes made him seem like an angel but he was anything but.
His name was Vincenzo Mustafa and he was at the top of my list. It didn't matter how pretty those blue eyes were. Mustafa was a tax dodger.
"I hear you've been looking for me, inspector." Mustafa opened, draping himself casually in a chair facing my desk. He was trying to appear nonchalant but I had his number. If he was here, he was out of options. Mustafa was cornered and he knew it.
Of course, rats are most dangerous when they're cornered.
"You're a cheat, Mustafa." I said, not even bothering to look at him. "A tax dodger. You owe the city nearly a thousand pieces of gold. I hope you're here to cough it up."
Mustafa sneered as if I had just thrown pig s@$+ on those well-tailored threads of his.
"If anything, the city owes me money." Mustafa said with a conviction only entitlement can bring, "I keep a dozen of the city's wretched citizens employed. Without me, they'd be living under the bridge."
"And they pay their taxes. So should you." I kept my voice disinterested but my hand had already slipped under my desk. I wanted to be prepared in case things went south.
Things always go south.
"Look, your hounding of me is making life difficult." Mustafa stood up. "Perhaps we can come to an understanding? I'm sure your position doesn't pay much. And if it isn't gold you want, well... I'm sure we can arrange something. You're a very pretty girl."
Mustafa did have gorgeous eyes but pretty boys were easy enough to come by. I could spend a night at any of a dozen brothels in the city and all it would cost me is some coin. Mustafa's offer would cost me my soul.
Besides, I was a woman. Not a girl.
"I wouldn't spit on you if you were on fire, Mustafa." I said, turning my full attention to him. I wanted the little ass to see the contempt in my eyes.
Mustafa sprung from the chair with the sort of resolve that can only come from injured pride. He was halfway across the desk, screaming something about how ugly I would be when he was done with me, when I threw the satchet into his face. The little explosion of powder was satisfying. He inhaled it.
Mustafa went rigid and hit my desk like an anchor being tossed out onto the docks. The paralysis wouldn't last long but it only took a moment to lock his arms behind his back with the manacles.
"You're a parasite, Mustafa." I hissed into his ear, "I hope you enjoy debtor's prison."
After the guardsmen had hauled Mustafa away, I thought about his parting words. He'd been raving mad, then. Foaming at the mouth. His pretty blue eyes didn't seem so pretty then.
"Why do you even care if someone pays their damn taxes!?!" Mustafa had shouted at me.
Somedays, I ask myself the same question.
----
My name's Warshawski. Just Warshawski. I was poor, growing up. I didn't live in the shadow of the bridge, mind you. I was poor. Not destitute. My parents worked hard to make sure I had a roof, a bed and three squares a day. They were loving. Kind. Everything parents should be.
Mom and dad both worked for a businessman. An importer of rare good. Dad worked the docks. Mom cleaned the offices. The jobs didn't pay well but they paid enough.
And every time they were paid, my parents made sure the city collected its cut.
I asked them about that, once. Why they paid taxes when the we had so little. It isn't like we saw much of that money being spent to improve our lives in our little corner of Lowcleft.
To answer my question, my parents took me for a walk the next day. We walked for what seemed like hours until we arrived Serpent's Run. That day, from the cheap seats, I watched a circus for the very first time. Afterwards, my parents took me to Alabastar Park and I was awed by the beauty.
"This is why we pay taxes." my father told me that day, "Because it helps pay for things like this and because it is the right, honest thing to do."
I'll never forget that day.
It was only a year later that life changed. My parents were concerned when I started holding conversations with thin air but they were canny folk and they loved me. Instead of freaking out, they brought me to Sister Kaye, a devout follower of Ashava the True Spark. Sister Kaye confirmed what my parents suspected. I had the gift to see and talk to spirits. Some of them were the dead but not departed. Others weren't ever alive to begin with. All of them seemed to like me.
After that, lessons in reading and writing and math were supplemented with lessons from Sister Kaye in how to control my abilities. I learned how to talk to the spirits. Sometimes, I helped them to the other side. Other times, they helped me with useful information.
I enjoyed my time with Sister Kaye. Honestly, I might have gone into the clergy and become a cleric of Ashava myself if things had gone differently.
But that's the thing about this world. Things always go differently. I was twelve when the town guard caught up with mom and dad's boss. Seems he had been smuggling pesh into the city. Of course, he was rich and mom and dad weren't so he was able to bribe the guard into accepting evidence as fake as a tin gold coin that they had been behind it all. The guard came to take mom and dad away. We all ran and Sister Kaye gave us refuge. She could only promise us a few days before things turned ugly, though.
I had to do something.
If it wasn't for the spirits I wouldn't have been able to. I waited until everyone was asleep and then I snuck out. Turned out, the old man my folks worked for wasn't just a smuggler. He was a murderer. There was more than one angry soul hanging around his offices, hoping for some payback. They were as thrilled as a kid during the Swallowtail Festival to help me.
Here's the thing. I wasn't able to find the evidence I needed to hang the bastard on smuggling or even murder. No, he was too cagey for that. But I found his books. His real books. And the spirit of the accountant the old ass had killed told me those ledgers would hang him.
I stole the books and brought them to the office of tax collection. The spirits went too, flanking me like an honor guard. They guided me to the offices of an old crust named Parker.
Most adults wouldn't give me the time of day but Parker was different. He listened to my story seriously and then accepted the ledgers. I sat there for what seemed like hours, watching him go through them. I knew he liked what he saw. His smile grew every time he turned a page. He was grinning like a lunatic by the time he closed the books.
And then he closed the books on my folks' employer, too. The fat old smuggler got picked up for tax evasion that very day. Further investigation by the city guard got him pinched for smuggling and murder, too. He was dancing on the noose by the end of the month and my parents were cleared of all charges. I'm pleased to say his spirit's never visited me.
Parker was impressed by what I'd done. Said it took gumption and skill. Said I had promise. He came to my parents and offered to take me in as an apprentice. Told them I'd make one hell of an inspector. My folks were thrilled at the idea of me having a promise of gainful employment but they left the decision up to me.
I said yes. I liked Parker. I liked what I'd done. The rich shouldn't get to dodge paying their fair share just because they're rich. The poor don't get the chance.
Parker said I had a natural gift for investigation. Of course, having spirits to help me made it easier. A warrior spirit whispered over my shoulder during fight practice. Other spirits were happy to point out clues I'd missed. I couldn't have done it without them.
These days, Parker's retired and living a quiet life, relaxing and reading his books. I visit him for dinner at least once a week, just to make sure he's eating right. I'm in what used to be his office, doing his job. Making sure no one skips out on paying their fair share.
I love my job.

Warshawski |

@Warshawski - Love that backstory. Felt very film noir- perfect for an Investigator. I could even tie Parker into the setup somewhere... Fantastic stuff!
Thanks! I'll have the stats up soon. I've got them worked out on paper. Just need to type them up. I did change the backstory just a bit. I realized I mentioned alchemy in her training and that's not something her archetype learns so altered that.

Greven Morius |

Hey Budd. This is Greven Morius' background:
Greven Morius is a grizzled story-telling ex-adventurer with a silver tongue.
Greven Morius considers himself a worldly and experienced man, and he often tells impressive stories of his past endeavors when he enjoys his leisure in one of Magnimar's many taverns. According to the stories he tells, there is little that Greven hasn't seen or done, and he basks in the admiration and attention that his stories garner him.
In reality Greven's life hasn't been quite as glorious and magnificent as in the embellished stories he tells, but he has experienced a lot in his 52 years. Most of his life he has been a vagabond swordsman and he has traveled all over Varisia and beyond, earning coin as a sellsword and spending it on drinking, gambling and whores as soon as he got it.
For a time he stopped drinking, and in that time he became quite the monsterslayer, and earned a good deal of money, but his vices caught up with him in Riddleport, where he again turned to drinking and gambling, and lost of all his money and spent far too much time there as a drunkard. His time in Riddleport became the first low point of his life, and he did a lot of stuff there that he would later come to regret. His debts grew and grew and finally he had to leave Riddleport, taking to his former practice as a monster slayer, but the years of drinking had left its mark on him, and he never became quite as good at his craft again as he had been earlier. He did manage not to get himself killed though, and he fell back to the way of traveling from town to town, slaying monsters and spending his money on alcohol, women and gambling, until he came to Nybor.
In Nybor he met the love of his life, a beautiful elven maiden called Cione, and he settled down with her and stopped drinking and gambling again. Though they tried, there was something wrong with either Greven or Cione, and they couldn't get any children. Despite that they lived happily for many years in Nybor, and those were the happiest days of Greven's life. But then Cione got sick and the disease killed her, and Greven taken by grief, took to the bottle again and left Nybor. He spent many years disgruntled and depressed, traveling farther than he had ever been, to the nation of Molthune, where he continued his life of vice and adventure.
When he finally returned to Varisia, his age was becoming noticable, and he decided to settle down in Magnimar, having earned enough money on his time in Molthune, that he could buy a small house. He still likes to drink and gamble, but does so with more restraint than before, and he puts his skills to good use as a private investigator. He has learned that he is even better with words than with the sword, and even though he continues to yearn for the life of adventure and miss Cione, he has become quite content with his new life in Magnimar.

Dramin's Little Interlogue
Boredom. It hit him like a blacksmith's hammer and his head made a great thud on the oak table. 'Again. I did it again.' After a great deal of willpower he raised his head back up and idly flicked his fingers toward at the candle, illuminating his plain and expressionless face to whichever tavern patrons looked his way. Those that did saw a young man, average build with slightly larger shoulders dressed in a white tunic and a brown vest. Purely unremarkable.
'I still can't believe I got another one of them mad enough at me to send me out onto the street.' He leaned back in the chair and stared at his hand in the air, lazily tracing designs using some minor tricks. 'What am I going to do now that I got booted out?' He had a real problem on hand. If he didn't do anything and fast, he would quickly find himself insane out of pure mental atrophy. 'So what if I did show up that old drybones; he was wrong plain and simple. Those bookish types, they only know one thing and are completely ignorant to the rest of the world. See, at least I know I'm arrogant, they're oblivious even to their own pride.'
People started to stare as he talked aloud but a sharp glance and a grip on his falchion ensured that they had plenty of other people to look at. He pulled out a small journal and flipped over to a list and took a hard read. 'I need something in the field, something to get my blood pumping and get back to my roots, academia is far too stifling and monotonous.' He noted a few places that seemed interesting from the savage wastes up north to the land east. He could feel the oppressive shackles of boredom clamping again and looked around for some way out.
Born from a magically adept father and a half-elven border guard of a mother he found that with his upbringing he could never just settle down and do one thing. His vast intellect, while a glorious gift, also was his biggest bane. If he wasn't satisfying it he felt like a shambling shell; he was only ever truly alive when he was trying something new, and experiencing the world, flexing his ego, body and mind to solve problems. Whenever he was allowing himself to just live in those moments despite the risks involved he forgot of all the abandoned studies, the ones that bored him by being too common and all too straightforward.
To be fair he never truly had an idea of risk as his father raised him to hone his prescience, and it allowed him the freedom to attempt mostly anything. To himself it was another mixed blessing, it made him too fast a learner and gave him too much of an edge against the other soldiers, mages, scholars and gamblers. It generally only led to trouble. He always seemed one step ahead, and most people didn't like feeling outclassed in their own fields.
Without realizing it he was lost in thought and already outside the tavern. His head was a furious storm, charting stars, sizing up the clergy that passed by, and looking at the architecture's hidden faults. Magnimar was a grand city but he didn't feel the same jolt as before, he spent the last little while here moving about the various parts of the city, using his talents to fill various roles. From guard, to tracker, to investigator, to tutor, to engineer, he never stayed in one place too long. It never felt right.
It was then that his arcane senses hit him. He felt a pull to this one building and just stood and looked, it belonged to the tax collectors. Outside there was a wagon and a gathering of shadows. Quickly and without thought he took his longbow off his shoulder, notched an arrow and threw out some light.
What he saw was a few non threatening faces, not some bandits or criminals, but what looked like an adventuring party. He relaxed the grip and cautiously approached, his senses acting up.
'What are you doing carting off into the night like this?' One of the carter's looked at him, sizing him up. 'We are heading off to a small town you probably have never even heard of. To be honest, its very out of the way and we need hearty men and women like yourself to help with the grunt work during our investigation. We waited all day for the last one but they never showed. Care to come for a ride? You will be paid somewhat. It seems to be a standard milk run and shouldn't take much time.'
The young man looked at the bow in his hand and felt the pack on his back. A small town? That sort of ranked pretty low on his list of places to see. The nagging from his arcane sense kept pulling though. 'What town might I ask?'
'Ravenmoor.'
The name struck a chord within him. He had heard about it,but only in passing. It didn't ever pop up in most books, and seemed to be pretty reclusive. The town was quiet, small and pretty much had nothing going for it. What kind of investigation could possibly be there? He figured that the talker was hiding something but it didn't matter much. He weighed his options and considered the northern area. Perhaps at the very least he could traverse a moor and then find a way up to the northern reaches after. Why not? It was different enough and gave him something new to add to the list. Besides, these guys looked like professionals and he might learn a thing or two.
'Name's Dramin, sharpshooter, swordsman, scholar and spellslinger.' He stuck out his hand, shining with a wizardry ring showing his divination teachings. 'Let's see what interesting things hide in this moor.'
He shook with the one he was talking with and a sudden flash of insight hit him regarding the journey. A feeling of dread and darkness but before he could pin it down and really grasp any of the flashes it was lost in a shiver.
A smile grew across his face. This may be exciting yet.

Special Abilities & Feats
------------------------
Precise Shot – No penalty for shooting into melee.
Quick Draw – Draw a weapon as a free action instead of a move action.
Point Blank Shot - You get a +1 bonus on attack and damage rolls with ranged weapons at ranges of up to 30 feet.
Focused Shot - As a standard action, you may make an attack with a bow or crossbow and add your Intelligence modifier on the damage roll. You must be within 30 feet of your target to deal this extra damage. Creatures immune to critical hits and sneak attacks are immune to this extra damage.
Combat Expertise - You can choose to take a –1 penalty on melee attack rolls and combat maneuver checks to gain a +1 dodge bonus to your Armor Class. When your base attack bonus reaches +4, and every +4 thereafter, the penalty increases by –1 and the dodge bonus increases by +1. You can only choose to use this feat when you declare that you are making an attack or a full-attack action with a melee weapon. The effects of this feat last until your next turn.
Dilettante - You gain a +2 bonus on Knowledge checks if you have 1–5 ranks in that skill. This bonus does not stack with Skill Focus. You can make untrained Knowledge checks with DCs up to 15.
Forewarned (Su) - You can always act in the surprise round even if you fail to make a Perception roll to notice a foe, but you are still considered flat-footed until you take an action. In addition, you receive a bonus on initiative checks equal to 1/2 your wizard level (minimum +1). At 20th level, anytime you roll initiative, assume the roll resulted in a natural 20.
Prescience (Su) - At the beginning of your turn, you may, as a free action, roll a single d20. At any point before your next turn, you may use the result of this roll as the result of any d20 roll you are required to make. If you do not use the d20 result before your next turn, it is lost. You can use this ability a number of times per day equal to 3 + your Intelligence modifier.
@Warshawski: Love the noir feel too. Especially the pseudo-cold open.

Warshawski |

@Hubaris: Thank you! That's very kind of you to say. Your intro was also quite fetching.
I love noir. Anyone who is a fan of detective fiction should recognize both Warshawski's name and that of her mentor, Parker.
Here's the character sheet for Warshawski. I hope I did this right. I've never made a 3rd level character in Pathfinder before.
I think I need to explain a few things. I didn't optimize Warshawski as much as I could have. Instead, I made her according to her backstory. Her traits refer to her life growing up, learning from Sister Kaye and being able to communicate with spirits. With the Possessed trait, I don't see her as actually possessed but as capable of drawing knowledge from the spirits who are whispering to her. Likewise, with Tainted Spirit, I don't see Warshawski as tainted but, rather, the way violence whips up the spirits around her exhausts her because of their agitation.
Her feats involving a Bladed Scarf are because she first learned combat from Sister Kaye, who was trained in the sacred weapon of her deity and Warshawski's Divine Artist reflects Ashava's love of dance and, therefore, her followers love of the art as well.
Believer's Boon is a reflection of her being devout to Ashava despite not being a cleric.
Let me know if I missed anything, need to change anything, or need to explain anything.

Budd the C.H.U.D. |

@Hubaris - Looks good, and I enjoyed the story! Dramin seems like he'll be a very entertaining character. That said, the exact manner in which the Ravenmoor job is given to you may be a little different (I'll let you all know the exact setup for being given the assignment in a wee bit), so you can always adjust that later. Character sheet and fiction both are looking good. It took me a bit of calculation to figure out how you had all those feats, but turns out it all checks out (I have also learned this: Lore Wardens are boss!). Good stuff! You're definitely in the running.
@Warshawski - Everything looks right to me, with a single caveat: I don't believe Bracers of Armor stack with regular armor (the way armor bonuses stack took me a long time to pin down) like, say, a Ring of Protection would. They're really meant more for Wizards or Monks, classes that don't wear armor at all. Now, I have houseruled that away in my house game once, so... *shrug* If you'd like to keep them, I can make that happen (obviously, the same would then be true for all applicants); if not, hey, another 1000 gp to spend, right? Anyway, great character, and the sheet's looking great. Love that all of the traits (and drawback) selected fit nicely into the character's history. Also: bladed scarf!
I'm really impressed with all of the applications thus far. I'll probably whip up a listing of everybody who has applied so we can get a better idea of what we're looking like. As I said in the original post, I'm looking for 4-5 players, but I miiiight consider a sixth (the encounters are easy enough to adjust).

Sebastian Bacarov |

@Budd:Song of Chiroptera here. I've finished my Bard Detective, Sebastian Bacarov of the City Watch. Hope you enjoy and thanks for the consideration.
@Warshawski: Goodness gracious what a great yarn. I'd like to see her working alongside Bacarov. But is even settle on reading her exploits from the sidelines!
Actually that goes for all. Nice group of submissions.
...
The scrap of parchment struggles against the knife blade, curled corners like red-stained wings grasping at the air. Bacarov eyes it closely, seeing the red still hungrily devouring the fibers near the blade where blood is still soaking.
”Just an hour, maybe less?”
Bacarov grunts affirmative, mind a swirl of what ifs.
”Looks like he dragged him down the alley, then tried to lift him up there,” Vestus steps to where Bacarov is hunched over the body. ”Guess the ladder wasn’t sturdy enough for them both.”
Another grunt.
”How do you want us to remove the body?”
”Go back to the Matador, get an animal blanket or two,” Bacarov responds, rising from his haunches pointing back down the alley. ”Minvandu’ll consider it cheap payment to get us out of his neighborhood.”
”Yes, sir.” the guardsman tips his head and heads out of the alley, pausing long enough to acquire another pair of his compatriots to go with him.
He brushes aside his hair and hooks a thumb in his coat pocket. They’d covered the victim’s face in the off chance someone local recognized the victim. Wouldn’t do to have an official from the Capital found in Rag’s End, even if he’d dressed the part.
Bacarov sighs and makes his way deeper into the alley, trying to not let his anger show. Too late again...
------------------------
"Sebastian Bacarov, City Watch Inspector," Aureleum always has had a tendency to make his title sound so uncomfortable. Or at least that's the way Bacarov takes it.
"Come in, both of you." The man behind the desk is balding, what's left to his temples, white. But his eyes are vital and intimidating as fitting his station.
Bacarov closes the heavy door and remains quiet as the satchel in his left hand itches at his palm.
"Is that it?"
Aureleum dips her head sharply in confirmation then nods for him to bring the satchel forward. "Bavarov found this after posting a suspect into the Rubble. They tried to burn it, so it's damaged."
The man being the desk stands and wraps his knuckles on the top. "Let's have it then..." City Watch Captain Tacitus Olfrey makes obvious his meaning. "Aureleum here days you have quite the tale, Bavarov. I'll be having that too."
"I'm not sure what we've found, sir. I still have four open inquiries, missing administrators and one guardsman from the Hells." Bacarov folds his arms, suddenly wishing he'd not tired back his dirty blonde hair. One of his famous headaches is brewing. "And four bodies, the latest only a few blocks down from where he'd been seen last."
"A note? Your report says a now was pinned to his chest with a dagger." Olfrey's eyes go to the satchel them back to Bacarov. "What did it say?"
He pulls his evidence book and flips it open to the page, a passable copy of the original.
အကြှနျုပျ၏အဆင်သင့်အရေပြား, သန့်ရှင်းပြီးထပ်မံဝတ်ဆင်
"Translation? Where is the original?"
"We have it with a man named Marcum Aldridge at the Guild of Apothecaries & Physicians." Aureleum puts in. "Hevs from Absalom, on loan from the Grey Cloaks to aid in an unrelated matter. But he had an Doris l expertise in languages."
"I'll stand for him, sir." Bacarov offers. After all, I grew up with the strange man.
"I assume that's the original?" Captain Olfrey gestures to the satchel in Bacarov's hand.
Without answering, he sets it on the desk and unbuckles the brass clasps. He steps back and sighs wearily. "I've been at this for three months now, Captain. Evidence is sparse, sometimes nonexistent. This thing, we found it in the fireplace of a room in Rag's End where the deceased had been...entertained."
"No witnesses..." A statement, not a question.
"Not that I could find. The girl in his room had left, gone to another client."
Olfrey grumbles at the last. It wasn't a well kept secret that Capital officials sometimes took in the night life of Lowcleft. But it didn't make it any less reprehensible to the Captain. This is his first meeting with the man, and Bacarov already likes him.
He open the satchel and looks inside, a few heartbeats later he closes it and fastens the clasps. "I may have something for you, Inspector Bacarov. Another official has gone missing."
You act like what you just saw, the thing that made my stomach burn and my dinner spill all over that alley...it's not the first time you've seen the like... Bacarov snaps back the preen and answers cautiously. "Where, sir?"
"This one is going to take you out of town." He reaches to the corner of his desk and slides over a scroll case. "How do you feel about tax collectors?"
..
Sebastian is a man of the law. A grounded faith in the scales of Abadar, he is never so happy as when he's on the hunt. Working the leads and the streets, though he works for the City Watch, he's unafraid to go into the dodgy districts I'd It means running his quarry down.
His personality can be gruff while on a case, but he maintains an affable exterior to facilitate his work. Sebastian does have friends, but they see little of him owing to his dedication to the work.
He was born and raised in Magnimar, parents both in the City Watch and passing down to their son a zeal for the law. In his years training, it was found Sebastian had an aptitude for diplomacy and the subtle arts of magic. Life as an Inspector finds him focusing on the former, resistant to overuse his arcane gifts. But he won't hamstring an investigation to prove the point.

Tied to a chair, a man gasps for air. The room is blurry, but that tends to happen when you can only open one eye.. He needs to continue blinking to keep the blood out of his other. With a cough a sudden sharp pain in his chest erupts, multiple wounds begin to flare up where a moment ago he was completely numb.
'Awake at last, I thought for a moment that I had put you down.'
The man manages to stop coughing long enough to look back up. Sitting in a chair opposite at him, hooded, his stern gaze fixated back at him and bearing the mark of the First Vault. At first he was unsure what he did to deserve this, until seeing that mark clasp unto his cape. It wasn't his first visit from the bank of Abadar following up on his debt, far from it. For years he had managed to evade and deceive them... that's when they decided to send him. The Collector.
'You know I always loved to say we can do this the easy way or the hard way.. but you had that choice.. I'm the hard way.'
Another blow to the abdomen causes an eruption of blood as he shifts in his seat.
'Now I don't suppose your going to tell me where you keep it stashed.'
After a moment to catch his breath, he manages to get three words out.. the most painful words he ever spoke. His jaw was most definetely broken and he couldn't feel his lips but he muttered 'Go to Hell'.
After a chuckle he gets right up in the mans face and says to him, 'All in due time, for now lets see how long you can hold out until it's time to send you under.'
A crack then a scream, it wouldn't be the last one until he confesses where he had hidden it. Chump change as it is the man had to be made an example of, the Bank of Abadar is not below using these tactics when necessary.. Civility has consequences after all and the Collector and those like him are very effective at what they do.
When the collectings done, he heads over to deliver the gold.. but not to the bank itself, that would draw much too much attention at a prestigious institution. A small safehouse run by an less then reputable bookie in a part of town where a piece of gold can get a man killed.. the perfect hideout.
The pouch of gold, hits the table with a jingle.
'Good work Silas m'boy, what's the haul?'
'Short.'
'How short?'
'Barely worth the trip, I feel like you've been wasting my time on petty crooks all week.'
The man pours out the bag on the table, barely twenty gold left of the two-hundred gold debt.
'Actually.. I did come across something very interesting that might suit you a bit more. We have a possibility of a large tax evasion scheme that I'd like you to take a look at. You'll have to leave the city but this could turn out to be a big one. Ya' interested?'
Silas grinned, Magnimar has been so boring recently and there might finally be something exciting going on.. where would he be going he wondered. Surely it had to be either Riddleport or Korvosa for something so important.
'Alright, where am I going?'
As he poured the small pile of gold in the pouch he looked up at Silas.

Any feedback would be appreciated.

Warshawski |

@Budd: You're absolutely right. No need to house rule it, either. What I'll do is get rid of the Bracers of Armor. In their place I'll buy a pair of Sleeves of Many Garments and a Hand of the Mage. This'll knock off 100 gold from my "what I have left to spend in game" pile.
@Bacarov: Thank you! Your's was well done, too. We overlap a lot (and, frankly, you're better in most places we do overlap :) ). I suspect we have crossed paths quite a bit while working, sometimes at cross purposes. Interdepartmental rivalries and all of that.

Sebastian Bacarov |

@Warshawski: I think we compliment more than overlap. ;) But the rivalry aspect crossed my mind. Something along the lines of a friendly one considering their respective loves of the law. For Bacarov, I'm gearing him towards a medical examiner / Profiler detective. Something along the lines of Watson from the Sherlock series crossed with. a bit of Harry Dresden. His current case is taking him in darker directions the he's experienced in the past. Little does he know that his case is skirting along the fringes of the Brotherhood (Skinsaws).
We'll see what happens! Thanks for the kind words.

Budd the C.H.U.D. |

Ohhh, these are looking great!
@Kennesty - Silas sounds very cool. I'm on lunch break and can't look over the crunch too closely ATM, but it looks good so far. By the way, there's a delicious irony in the Nicholas Cage lookalike avatar applying for this particular module... Mwahahaha.
@Warshawski - Sweet. I love the "hand of the mage." So simple, yet so flavorful.
@Sebastian - He looks awesome. Same as with Silas, I don't have enough time to review the crunch completely at the moment, but this is dynamite stuff. I actually am very curious to see him and Warshawski together.
I might just have to consider the "two tables" thing again, because there are so many great applicants so far that I kind of want everybody. O_O

Budd the C.H.U.D. |

@Dalton - Yup! Somehow I figured there wouldn't be a huge turnout for this, but hey, I'm kinda proud that it went this way.
@Marlow - Welcome aboard. :D Marlow looks cool, he'll be in consideration. I'll take a closer look after work.
@TreasureFox - Looking forward to seeing it.
@Alex G - Alas, perhaps next time!

Budd the C.H.U.D. |

Yep, burnout is what kills most PbP GMs from what I've seen and read. I honestly think that taking on two tables for my first GMing experience in this format is probably too much to handle, so while I'm tentatively keeping the option open, it probably won't happen.
Which pretty much means that you guys have given me a pretty monumental task with all these great characters. Why couldn't anybody submit Krogdor the Half-Orc Barbarian with 4 Intelligence and 36 Strength, just to make it easy on me...? ;_;

Lady Ladile |

Okay, submitting Marigold Montajay for consideration. I think I've got everything pertinent in the profile, but please let me know if I've missed something or if my math seems wonky.
Hopefully the background will be okay for the moment, though it's more of a brief glimpse of her personality than anything. If need be, I can flesh it out more later or via in-game dialogue (should she be selected) depending on how things go :)

Budd the C.H.U.D. |

Okay, I've had a little time to go over some of the crunch on the more recent submissions, and for the most part we're all good to go!
That said, here are my thoughts, comments, etc.:
@Bacarov - I read up on the contacts in your profile. Good stuff. Gives me plenty to work with, and I could easily see this guy coming back for more adventures once this is over. Thanks for giving me lots to work with!
@Marlow - Okay, reviewed your crunch. Looks good, but he should actually have another feat; I only count two here, but he should have three total (since he gets an extra for being human).
@Kennesty - First of all, kudos on taking advantage of the freedom to make a Lawful Evil character- forgot to say that the first time I went over your stuff. Only problem I have with the crunch is that a Ring of Protection +1 is 2000 gp, not 1000. Might want to go back over that and re-calculate. For the record, an Inquistor/Brawler is a really cool combination.
@Ladile - Marigold is neat. I really like the Psychic Searcher archetype, and you might be the only character so far with any proper healing abilities. I liked the background/fiction, it was a fun way to introduce the character's personality. I probably need to give your crunch one more good go-over to make sure, but for now it looks good.
So here's the roster thus far!
The Contenders:
Dalton the Thirsty - Human Monk (Weapon Adept)
Greven Morius - Human Slayer
Vash "the Swift" Val Vraxem - Halfling Swashbuckler
Dramin Jodare - Human Fighter (Lore Warden) / Wizard (Divination - Foresight)
Warshawski - Human Investigator (Spiritualist)
Sebastian Bacarov - Human Bard (Detective)
Silas Hawkes - Human Inquisitor / Brawler
Marlow Conrad - Human Slayer
Marigold Montajay - Halfling Oracle (Psychic Searcher)
The following have also expressed interest, but have yet to turn in their characters:
yazo
Bjornhona
TreasureFox
There's still time to finish up and submit a character, but beware! I am quickly leaning toward cutting off recruitment early, considering the considerably larger-than-expected turnout.

The Goblin |

An investigative campaign, with Song of Chiroptera . . . Dude I got to try out for this one. I have hero lab at home, I am on the road this weekend, if role play is more important than crunch here is a bit of flavor text.
Writing sample:
A group of drunks call for another round. Marsh glances up. The song starts anew.
”Don't alter my altar
don't desecrate my shrine
My church is the water
and my home is underneath the empty sky
Don't underestimate the spine in a poor man's back
when it's against the wall and his future's black...
One man's story is another man's shame
I’m bound for a gallows twirl, I ain’t bound for fame
Take to the swamp boy, and cover up your tracks
Go away child, go away child and don't look back
Sad is the lullaby from a mother's heart and soul
when she knows her child has strayed from the fold
The clean coats will perish
by death's cruel hand i
and finish the job that fate began
All that static in the attic,
that's just an old drunk ghost
His chains are rattlin' but his end is close
There’s no storm of sun just the empty sky
I came for the drinks but I stayed for the lie.
How I hate this song. Yet how I listen to it each time. Every word . . . each and every word . . . Heh, wished I could have heard and understood it 25 years ago. Coulda---No. Don't go there. Keep your head.
Marsh looked back to Sebastian waiting for his response, but was actually watching the woman taking drinks to the ferriers table in his periphery. She was just past prime, but he felt well past his. She was beautiful, but tarnished by the life she lived here, hells, everyone here was tarnished.
None more than me. . .
She would have him he guessed. She'd like a chance to take care of him proper. She'd be a good woman to him. If she was born in different circumstances she'd have made a wonderful nobleman's wife. Her hands, though rough from water and toil, would have made fine mother's hands.
She's always so gentle . . .
Marsh pictured them running through through a child's unruly mop. Wiping tears away while she stilled his fears with a smile. Holding a little girls hand as they walked giggling together through clover.
They took that possibility from her long ago.
Drunken leecherous peddlers of flesh. They never see a human being, only the money they can make off their backs. . . what a piece of crap I am. Why have I allowed her to fester in this place for so long. . . and, who am I kidding. What do you fancy yourself as being able to offer her?
If it wasn't for you maybe some merchant or old nobleman would have taken her as a favored mistress. Pay the man upstairs for her proper. Give her a gilded cage to live in. Take her from this place where you have failed to do so.
Just add it to the list. One more failure . . . She's wasted too much time on me already. Besides, she is safe here. The man upstairs won't tolerate unwilling trespass upon any of his property. He doesn't abuse her. Actually, this may be the best time in her life. The most stable. Maybe even the happiest, as sad as that may sound.
You've been drinking too much. Heh, she probably knows that too.
A wry smile touches Marsh's lips as he continues to watch the member of the city watch.
Clever girl and you are far from defenseless.

The Goblin |

I think he is going to be a multi classed affair. He is older and will reflect that. He has a lot of bitterness and guilt, but a lot of good left in him. A bit volatile at times but has a lot of back story that will effect his interactions. Right now he has a lot of experience and skills that make him an ideal Hunter of men a mercenary bounty hunter for hire, looking for a reason to love but never able to cease existing.

Marlow Conrad |

@Marlow - Okay, reviewed your crunch. Looks good, but he should actually have another feat; I only count two here, but he should have three total (since he gets an extra for being human).
Ah yes, thanks for reminding me, I also forgot the slayer talent I think.
EDIT: got quick draw and rapid shot with ranger combat style.

Wivvy |

Hmm...what to do what to do. Well as I thoroughly enjoy the games I'm playing/running with you in them, I will definitely apply. Now I have to decide on a concept.
Well I do have this great concept for an extremely simple (my nice way of say stupid) Paladin that has a low intelligence and a high Charisma and strength which comes together to make a gentle giant that doesn't use much more the a few words in a sentence. Not the same as a silent, grumpy Charisma dump character I might add. I'm not usually big on playing with those kinds of players on PbP because the majority of their posts are "I just sit in the back, not saying anything." Frek will be very expressive, just using short sentences. He doesn't have to be a Suli, but the ability scores are nice, it also works for his backstory and his name (Frek). If his RP is to high, then I wouldn't mind taking away some (or all) of his racial abilities. Doesn't really matter to me. As a paladin he doesn't really have to worry about being powerful, but as a stupid paladin he's not overpowered like basically all paladins...I'm not bitter. Still, I can use a human just fine.
But if he's too comical or a bad fit for this campaign, I also have an idea for a human swashbuckler named Kate Barlow. Lawful evil preferably because she is a bandit-type, but any chaotic alignment works as well.
Let me know what you think, I'm just throwing some ideas out there.
