Death and Taxes - GM Budd the C.H.U.D.'s Feast of Ravenmoor

Game Master Budd the C.H.U.D.

In life, only two things are inevitable - death and taxes. An investigation into a missing tax collector from Magnimar led our heroes to the isolated village of Ravenmoor, but what they found there was a community dominated by a cult of Ghlaunder, God of Parasites. They also uncovered the identity of the twisted being responsible for the corruption of the town, and learned that this same being has sinister plans for a small, isolated city in the mires of Ustalav. Carrion Hill beckons...

This is the exact reason why the party in my recently-completed house game ended up lugging around a dire bat for the second half of the campaign.

Okay, okay! NAME it. Make it a GOOD NAME, not Shelton (haw haw), and you can keep it.

Have fun getting it into the city! *poutsbutnotreally*

I don't know how she would have crossed the river. She may have had to find a place shallow enough to get through it. I am not entirely sure what this "estuary" is actually... some kind of house-boat?

Enormous Radioactive Monster - - hp tons/tons - - AC nuh-uh I got forcefield

It's a bunch of small "field tent" type of buildings intended to be capable of being set up, taken down, and moved around with minimal fuss. Part of it is built over the water of a small stream branching off from the river, as the river drakes are aquatic by nature. ...Fairly sure I described it at some point, but if I didn't, that's my bad for typing up a description somewhere and then not copypasta'ing it into the actual thread.

We'll just say Windmane was able to wade across at a shallow point in the river. The Lampblack is highly inconsistent in this area, which is why larger river boats simply don't come up this way. At points, it's just too thin or too shallow to risk using anything bigger than the sort of tiny wooden boat the brigands had been using (which is nowhere near big enough to transport notable cargo or more than a few passengers).

Any ideas as to the name of your new draconic friend? Again, Drake Shelton is officially vetoed. ;)

Well, yes, that's what we do in-character. But as far as I understand it, the drake does not have a name out-of-character yet.

Excellent stuff as usual, folks! I'm at work and thus don't have time for a post until either I get off or tomorrow morning, so please be patient with me.

In the meantime, I kinda sorta love the idea of naming the drake Dio, because it's both the name of a favorite music icon and the name of the awesome villain from Jojo's Bizarre Adventure. Griz is nice, too.

Calwen, how did you know about the drake's obsession with snatching the underpants off swimmers?! That's so top secret even I didn't know about it! dem elves be metagamin yo

I updated the wiki now. It would be nice if Sebastian and Warshawski could check whether I got the order of the events right here; you were using back- and forward-references which made it a bit difficult:

feast-of-ravenmoor.wikia.com/wiki/Back_to_Wolf's_Ear

Current To-Do List:
NPC entry for:

  • Dio
  • Captain Malfoight
  • The Professor (Just to get this straight, that is "the gnome" and "Nettleby Brackenweld, alias Tomwell Brakindu, alias Tomarindi Parthenvalt", too, isn't he? I didn't pay much attention to episodes I wasn't involved in the past, so it became at some point hard to follow)

And on top of that maybe an entry for "The Whispering Way" organization. I might make an entry for "The White Rose" while I am on it.

The story currently continues in the "Investigating the estuary" thread, though I might move things into a new thread once we leave the estuary.

The "From Galduria to Ravenmoor" got a little too long, I think I'll cut that off at the nightly attack and make an own thread of this.

Enormous Radioactive Monster - - hp tons/tons - - AC nuh-uh I got forcefield

Cool grits. I'll take a look at the wiki and see if there's anything I need to sort out on there.

Thanks for putting that together, again. Awesome stuff.

By the way, yes, all of those things refer to the same person. That gnome has a number of aliases, and his underworld nickname is "the Professor."

Blizzard crippled our networks today.
Won't post much until personal things around here are dealt with.

Apologies.

No worries, such things happen.

Did anybody ever equip those bracers of armor?

Damn it, I got lost again. Those spider webs did ring a bell, I would have really wanted to compare any webbing that Bacarov may have found to the sample of the webbing in which Armand was hung up. If it would be the same it would hardly mean that we're safe from stirges.

Ugh, well, when I said I wanted to compare the nets I meant the spider webs that Sebastian mentioned earlier.

I already showed the others the webbing when I first met them, though the information that there is a magical aura on it is new.

Whoopsie. That's what I get for trying to squeeze in as much as possible after a seven-day run at work, during the last of which I didn't sleep for almost 36 hours! :D

[Img] [Stats] [Info] Female Elf Cavalier 3

I actually did not read Sebastian's last post before the post in which I described my attack. I had to fix my character sheet - the armor was still missing in the AC calculation - and read up on rules regarding a Cavalier's Challange. Hence, part of the reason why she did not react to it was, that Calwen did in fact not hear what Sebastian said; things happened simultaneously, so to say.

Works for me. It's good rp. His method is focused on learning the situation deeply before acting. Whether it's a few seconds of observation or a few hours of study should time allow. Add to it he's used to directing the Watch officers attached to his cases and it's in his nature to dive in as a conductor of music in a way.

I'm sure the jive will flow as the rp carries forward. We have differing methods and goals and preconceived notions, so time will tell.

I think you misinterpret her reaction there. She's not rash, but she is "dragon" kind of cavalier.

When the thing attacked Dalton she had to intervene, even though she had come to similar conclusions as you did in her thoughts.

Good PC Development Discussion (All)

.

OOC, I get the elven knight character concept and it totally rocks!

Keep in mind though, by being an observant Inspector, Bacarov is a creature of context. For example:
》In a bar, a fight breaks out > Bacarov elects to go with subdual vs. crossbows and Lucerne Hammers.
》In a tomb, a demon manifests and attacks > Bacarov elects for the murder|death|kill

Now those are pretty extreme examples, but looking at this scene, he gathered the following:
》Kid calling for 'applesauce'
》Rustling in the bushes
》Warshawski's warning to the team
》The idea that lil' ol' applesauce - given the context of Ravenmoor - was a stirge was at the forefront of his mind
》A stirge pops up

So his context was different than yours. While your knight saw a comrade in danger and reacted accordingly, the Inspector - not getting that she'd not heard his earlier shout - only saw the party's Department of First Impressions committing the first faux pax of the day by trying to kill little Orni's pet horror. Again, his IC perspective.

Same with the mention of Elias' name. We spent the time to go thru a plan. It was restructured but keeping our search for Elias remained an 'under wraps' segment of the plan. So, once again, IC perspective sees Bacarov in the frame of mind that he's dealing with a group of ham-fisted, single-minded individuals.

As mentioned earlier, it's a learning experience for him too. Bacarov has to understand that only 3 of the 6 in the group have professional expertise in investigation. Kind of like throwing a Marine into a missing persons case with two NYPD detectives and a Secret Service agent and expecting their differing methods should mesh right out of the gate.

It'll jive in good time and it's food role playing.

Edit Add
Another concept with Bacarov is his drive to direct. He's never going to be a front line combatant. Nor is he going to ever be the primary spell-slinger. But what he's good at is 'project management'. He's a lead detective (DCI in Brit terms), so his brain is wired to seek out all the assets at his disposal and employ them appropriately. Is he right all the time, heck no! But it doesn't change his method of applying his context-driven nature.

So he's going to continue to strive towards getting the group cohesive. His first real step was offering up his rough plan sketch and seeing what the others thought. When he couldn't maintain Intel on the outside of Ravenmoor, he redirected his 'assets', seeing if Warshawski could rustle up some spiritual surveillance.

Bacarov operates in this order:
1 Observe
2 Analyze
3 Assess Resources
4 Apply Results

Just additional insight into his motivations.

The context is not different, only how she reacted to Warshawski's warning.

The first sentence I wrote in reaction to it was (that is in the thread after the attack, but that, too, was a cross post, as I mention right after it. There was a lost of cross posting last night):

Calwen wrote:
Calwen looked completely puzzled at Warshawski. If there was hiding something it was likely what the boy was looking for. Likely a dog, or, given the nature of this village, a stirge.

However, due to Warshawski's warning she concluded that the child may in fact be a spotter and an ambush about to commence. That's why she was surprised that it was just one stirge in the next post.

However, she still considers the possibility in the post from above that it may simply be a pet, anyway.

Calwen wrote:
If it was just a pet she'd better try to just befriend it and bring it back, winning a favour from the boy.

(note again: That was before the attack from my perspective)

Her attitude changed when it actually did attack.

Calwen actually did not try to kill it, which is why she did not let Windmane attack, but she did want to give it something to think about. That she is ashamed later on is a reaction to the boy and to how easily Dalton caught it without harming it. She was fully aware of the same circumstances you observed as can be read from her posts, but she set different priorities. Protecting her comrades is the first.

Calwen wouldn't put it like "observation", but she is mindful of her environment. As an elf, she is used to considering interdependency of things in her surrounding and adapt to the greater whole.

All that cross posting did make it a little difficult, but I think it's believable that at least in the first case, writing my post took more than five minutes. In the second case I did lot of rule stuff - Can I force it to attack me and no one else? Can I risk to just try and subdue it (was considering a non-lethal with the broad side of the sword)?

Regarding the other points: I would prefer to address that in-character... She will certainly address Sebastian at a quiet moment.

@Dramin - So much fast, very reply. :D I had a weird feeling somebody would have a reply up within minutes of my post.

A quick news update: my laptop's charging cable has decided to become a silly, useless thing, and thus I have to keep the thing rooted in one place to make sure it doesn't die permanently. That means that I can't take the thing with me to work, so I'll probably only be able to post once or twice a day (before or after work, depending on the shift) until a replacement cable arrives. It probably won't be a big deal, but I just wanted to throw that out there in case my posting isn't quite as frequent over the next week or so.

Although one or two posts a day still sounds like plenty to me, personally. :D

Of course right?
That always happens, it fits though so I won't edit it for the most part.
