Dead Man Walking! A Way of the Wicked Campaign Phase III (Inactive)

Game Master bwatford

Guilty. You are a lawbreaker – the worst of the worst. Too dangerous to live amongst the good people of Talingarde, they dragged you in chains before a magistrate and condemned you. They sent you to the worst prison in the land and there they forever marked you. They held you down and branded you with a runic F. You are forsaken. You won’t be at Branderscar Prison for long. Branderscar is only a holding pen. In three days – justice comes. In three days – everything ends. What a pity. If only there was a way out of this stinking rat-hole. If only there was a way to escape. If only… No. No one has ever escaped from Branderscar Prison. This is where your story ends.

My bad...I vote for 6

10 Min Background:

1. Write five things essential to your character’s background including previous adventures and events.

1. Becoming a Soldier
2. Fiendish Heritage Showing/ Being shut out and betrayed
3. Becoming a Bandit/Sword for Hire
4. Stealing of military supplies to sell to the enemy.
5. Getting tracked down and arrested for Treason.

2. List your character’s goals and things you want to see happen to your character.

1. Revenge
2. Learn to trust again.
3. Revenge
4. Have friends and maybe a new family
5. Revenge
6. amass wealth and power to full the need for revenge :)

3. List two secrets about your character. Keep in mind secrets your character may not know yet.

His devilish blood comes from his mothers side which were part of the chruch of Asmodeus back before the purge.

He has a Grandfather that is Tiefling as well. He was a high priest of Asmoeus before the purge and may still be alive.

4. List three people that are tied to the character through blood, romance or honor. Remember to include positive and negetive reflections.
His Grandfather: He thinks he is dead and knows nothing of him.

His mother: While supportive at first she sided with his father out of fear instead of standing up for the love of her son. She is dead to him.

His fatheer: A soldier and loyal follower of Sarenrae judged the boy harshly for what he had no control over. He put him out with nothing and threatened to kill him if he came around again. He also threatened and turned his mother against him. Death is too good for this man. He must be made to suffer.

5. Describe your character in detail as you see fit. Relate any additional information you believe is important or required. Include personality and mannerisms.

Tall, well built. Sharp and handsome features. The fiendish change was sudden and as if a spell changed him. He awoke one day with reg skin, a massive set of horns with a great toothy maul. His feat cloven. It was almost as if he were a direct decendant to Asmodeus himself. He is reserved and likes to get to know others before judging.

Phase 2 Questions:
1. How does your character interact with the others within a group?
As a soldier he was trained to rely on others and work together to overcome things. He has some mistrust as everyone he loved turned on him, but he knows the only way to survive is to come together. He is brave and looking for a family to replace what he lost. If trust can be formed he would make a great friend and ally.

2. What is your character's role in a group?

Front line, damage dealer, Tracker. Probably will do beast master and have a Cat and a bird so down the line will be able to scout for the group as well.

3. How is your character not as they seems?

I want one or two skills that would surprise others if they found out he knows them. Also include personality traits, positive or negative, that would similarly surprise others.

Profession Soldier: He was raised to be a good soldier, probably even worshiped Sarenrae until everyone turned on him. He was made the way he is.

Down the line his ability to see through the eyes of his beast will prove usefull and out of the oridnary.

He is loving and caring of those he calls friends or family. Hate has filled his heart for those that turned on him and shunned him. He just wants to be excepted for what he is. He had no choice on being born the way he is.

4. What are your character's goals, conscious and, perhaps, subconscious?

Make those pay that betrayed him. To show them what their closed minded view did. See and witness the horror they created through Hate.

5. How easily does your character love?

Have they been in love? He had love of his family, but no longer. He has never loved another. He is open to love if trust can be forged.

6. Is your character racist at all, either now or in their past?

No, though he is trained to hunt track and fight humans.

7. All people believe something that is not true, both about the world around them and about themselves. What lies/untruths does your character believe about themselves and the world around them?

That things are fair. That his actions are just b/c they came out of the hate fostered in his heart. They were not things he would have chose to do if he were not betrayed. That he is still a good man no matter what actions he takes to statisfy his revenge.

8. How is your character about material possessions?

As a soldier he feels there is a right tool for the job and who ever can best use the tool should be the one using it. He also feels everyone that pulls their weight deserves and equal share.

9. What does your character perceive their major problems to be?

He has trust issues, and a lust for revenge that may get him killed.

10. What does he perceive the solutions to those problems to be?

Forge bonds of trust and friendship, create a new familly of friends. To learn that his path of revenge is a shadow of what could be done to the people that betrayed him. To become part of the bigger picture.

11. What are your character's religious beliefs?

open. He once worshiped Sarenrae before all he knew and loved fell apart.

12. What does your character fear?

Not being accepted. Never finding love of friends or family. Not doing his part.

13. How much of a temper does your character have? What sorts of things set them off?

Short now. Used to not be so. The looks he gets for what he is, the wispers. Anyone that reads a book by the cover and is quick to judge.

woops was doing this when you posted about the 10 min background. I like to write pretty indepth backgrounds and have never used the 10 min template. I will have to write up the background for you. Going to lunch now.

@ Ashe

What you do is take all the information listed in the 10 minute background and questionnaire and now make a back story out of it. Make sure to include all the information in the story. This lets me judge both your writing style as well as your writing ability.

Plus I will need a name for the character at this point.

Phase 2
Let's get to work!

I'd say no to the houserule. I detest fumbles with a burning passion. :/
PS: Fun thing: I've been answering the 10 minute background like a questionnaire, with every point taking about 40 minutes. Then my PC crashed, I lost almost everything and I read that it has to be in story form, basically how I already did the background without need to rewrite everything. So much work wasted. :/
Anyway, I wasn't able to fit some of the things in the background, so I put them separately: it didn't make any sense to talk about secrets that even Etna doesn't know about...
To get started, here's Etna!

Background:
House Agnes was a minor but wealthy noble house in Talingarde, with only two heirs: Torgard Agnes and Raphael Agnes. While the first became an important member of the knights of Alerion, marrying early, Raphael took a very different lifestyle: he delved in the secrets of the arcane arts and traveled the land, becoming a famous adventurer and aiding the kingdom in more than one occasion. By the time he settled down after gaining a fortune in his travels, many things had changed: he had grown old, his brother Torgard had died in battle, and Raphael passed most of his time as a retired wizard with his brother's family, taking the role of grandfather for Torgard's grandchildren.
It was at that time that he met Lady Farisa. A beautiful, young woman of noble birth, she came to Talingrade with a child a little more than a year old, Thomas. Even at that time, she spoke little of her origin and her past, asking Talingarde for protection after she was driven away from her not-specified native country. In hindsight it was really strange that she didn't raise suspicion, but the authorities were okay with it as long as she had the money to settle in the city.
It can't be said that she didn't attract attention, tough: marrying a much older man, having a child from a previous, mysterious marriage, made malicious gossip flock around her.
The fact that this elderly man was none other than Raphael Agnes, the famed wizard, made only things worse: that didn't stop the two from marrying, and little time later a girl, Etna, was born.

Being the daughter of a famous wizard was a blessing: first and foremost, she didn't get killed on the spot as a “spawn of the devil” as soon as she was born. Raphael, a renowned scholar, explained to everyone (included a seemingly distressed Lady Farisa) that Etna was an Ifriit, a much different creature than a devil: the wizard's power, probably, influenced the girl's birth in some ways.
But Etna didn't love her dad only because he saved her life; while Raphael, one of the kindest man to ever walk this earth, loved both of his children, he and Etna shared a particular bond: magic.
Etna was born with prodigious sorceror powers, and his father was overjoyed when he learned of that: under his guidance, she casted her first cantrip (a spark spell which managed to set a precious tapestry on fire) at the age of 7, and her first proper spell at 10 ( a color spray which knocked off Winston, Etna's dog, for a couple of minutes). As such, she spent most of her time with her father, learning magic and hearing his stories of his adventuring days: in particular, Etna was fascinated by those of other Planes and the creatures that inhabited them, with which she understood she had a connection. All of this much annoyed Lady Farisa, who wanted Etna to take interest in more mundane events and participate in what was supposed to be the normal life of a noble in Talingarde: she got what she wanted in her second daughter, Elizabeth, born when Etna was two.

Good things don't last tough, as Etna learned, and Raphael got suddenly ill when Etna just turned nineteen years old. He died shortly after, and what Etna saw on his deathbed changed her life forever.
She left the room where his father where shortly after he passed away, but returned a few minutes later to give him the last farewell. All of her relatives where around him, overwhelmed with grief.
The children where crying their eyes out because “Grandpa Raph” was no longer there.
Cousin Heremin, a middle-aged knight who she always saw wearing a kind but stern expression, was sobbing quietly. Etna argued with him more than once, but she respected him as one of the most dedicated men she knew. Even later in her life, when she will go down to dark path, he will still be respected by Etna.
And there were also many people where trying to console Lady Farisa.

And then there was Lady Farisa herself.
Her sobs where way louder than the rests and copious tears were running on her cheeks , her face half-hidden on her palms.
But as Etna looked at her, something clicked in her head. Lady Farisa had no desire to cry. Everyone wanted to just let out their suffering, but she was crying the most perfect cry a widow had ever cried.
In her ears, Lady Farisa's sobs were getting every second more similar to a cavernous laugh, and Etna stormed off the door.
She tricked them. She tricked them all. Everyone was there comforting her, when they were the ones that needed comfort. She's probably laughing under all of those tears.
As she was making for her father study, her vision blurred when tears started watering her eyes. Her hair, usually a bright orange, took the grey color of an ember.
They are all too good-hearted to see the true colors of Lady Farisa. They are so good-hearted that no one would ever doubt her. Being so good-hearted made them weak and vulnerable to the machinations of that... that...
Etna swore as she entered in his father study, flinging herself on a pile of scrolls, as one would do on a bed.
She's been holding all of them on a leash. And father, father too! He probably understood what kind of person Lady Farisa was, he was too intelligent not too, but stayed with her! Why, why, for what reason? “Love”?
She thumped her fist on the ground in anger, pulled up an handful of paper and reduced it in cinders in a couple of seconds.
If it was “love” who killed him, then that is the most dangerous thing in existence! You can't have pity of anyone, you can't trust anyone, you can't love anyone or people like that whore will exploit you and make you do their bidding!

She cried for hours, and her hair grew slowly back to their normal color, and then steadily became brighter than ever before.
She had decided. She would have her revenge, she would make Lady Farisa (she refused the idea that that disgusting creature was her mother) pay. She would humiliate her, strip her of all of her ill-gained riches and make everyone leave her begging on the streets like the vermin she was.
First things first, Etna needed to get on her mother's good side. To achieve that she just had to act like her mother always wanted her to , to conduct the life of a normal noble and participate in those mundane events Lady Farisa such loved: her mother would think she finally managed to make Etna her willing puppet (as she did with her sister Elizabeth), but there she would build a web of connections, of people that trusted her more than they trusted her mother.
But she didn't want to achieve that by the means her mother used, always acting her part, making everyone her unwilling pawns; or those of Elizabeth, whose demeanor was to be called “promiscuous” at best.
She would give people what they most desired: a friend, someone to trust, a weakness that Etna had understood was not to be taken lightly. From the day her father died, it was as she could feel people desires. Making friends was just that: listening to people, giving small advices and encouragement, kindling those desires, letting people follow them like a moth to a flame...
In no time, she was well known and loved among the upper classes of Talingarde and it seemed that her mother had started to take a liking to her.

In the meantime, Etna started preparing for the second part of her plan: to take back all the money that Lady Farisa inherited from her father, and completely destroy her reputation.
To do so, Etna started studying and later work as a Lawyer and a bank clerk:in Talingarde the criminality rate had diminished so much that most of the lawyers where employed in other administrative duties.
She never was an unintelligent person, on the contrary she was rather sharp, but she really found in the study of the law system her vocation: she could see before her eyes a myriad of loopholes, conveniently vague laws and ways to exploit the system.
It was as if Talingarde law was written on the wrong assumption that everyone would have played nice by following some unwritten rules...
But she knew better that some people would never do that, and all the good-hearted and pure ones would get exploited by the more ruthless.
It's their fault for trusting others anyway. It's their loss if they can't see that someone else is pulling their strings...

While the major part of his father inheritance had gone to her mother, Etna had received a little of it only for herself: it was more than enough for her to start investing in most of Talingarde businesses, and strike contracts that while seeming fair, where in reality completely in her favor. It helped a lot that Etna was able both to soften up people with her magic without them noticing, and that most of Talinarde merchant were either too gullible or too sure of themselves to even consider the idea that they were being scammed.
She then managed to acquire enough trust from Lady Farisa that she let Etna administer the finances of the family, and as such Etna was able to guide her mother do to a number of poor investments and financial decisions: of course, every one of them looked quite convenient at a first glance, they where all in businesses Etna had invested on (so she could later regain those same monies), she made sure that few people beside Lady Farisa and her knew she was administering the finances of the family, and she didn't sign even a single piece of paper, but let her mother do all of that so that there couldn't be proof of her involvement.

With time, Etna drained Lady Farisa's inheritance and reacquired it for herself, while also making her mother invest in societies that did not-so-licit side businesses (without her mother knowing, of course). That would have done nicely to damage her reputation, or get her arrested, even.
After 4 years she was close to success: in a few days her mother had to pay a large sum of interests that would have completely wiped out her riches, and she was walking to her mother study with a grin on her face and a contract in her hand. By signing it, Lady Farisa would have, unknowingly, bought “merchandise” from an enterprise that was a proxy for a slave trading business. She strolled triumphantly in her mother study, convinced that she was about to obtain her revenge, but her eyes filled with fear as soon as she entered the door.
Lady Farisa was chuckling behind her desk while two guards took Etna by the arms and said ”Etna Agnes, you're arrested for fraud and illicit trading”

The trial lasted for a long while: apparently a great number of people where employed to figure out all of Etna's exploits. The investigation have been going on for some months, it seems, and since then it took them some time to track all the unfair contracts, investment and trading that she did.
The witnesses where a lot too, but it wasn't surprising as she practically had deals with all of Talingarde merchants.
She didn't try to defend herself from any of the accuses that they moved at her: it would have been useless anyway. She didn't break any law, but all of the court was convinced that what she did was wrong, and so try to point that out would have been a moot point.
She was strangely calm about all of this: they would have surely condemned her to death (they said that her exploits brought more than a person to bankrupt, not that she cared...), but she knew that it was her fault for not have been careful enough. She could see trough Lady Farisa's eyes that she knew she was tricking her for a long time, but that she let Etna do it just for making her defeat more amusing. She was just playing with Etna like a cat does with a mouse...

Sure enough, she was sent to Brandescar to be later transported to a (short) life of hard labor at the salt mines. She didn't struggle, and had accepted her own failure, but she couldn't help to wish for a second chance to bring down Lady Farisa and Talingarde, that city that condemned her, someone who didn't break any law, only because she was “evil”.

Now for what didn't fit in/I wanted to expand upon...
Goals:
A: Etna wants revenge on Lady Farisa, and killing isn't an option: she wants to humiliate her and make so that everyone will leave her, not kill her and make her a martyr. Might doesn't make right: cunning does.
B: Etna deeply begrudges Talingrade for having her imprisoned: in all these years, Etna didn't break a single law while doing what she was doing. Because it wasn't written anywhere that exploiting rules loopholes was punishable she understands why the inhabitants of Talingrade think that she's evil (and she is: her actions have brought countless misfortunes and a vast amount of people) but she thinks that's rather childish and stupid, to make up rules and then ignore them and flip the table because 'She's evil and what she did was wrong'.
As such, when she gains control of Talingrade, Etna will work behind the scenes to make Talingrade's law system much akin to that of Hell, full of loopholes for the cunning to exploit.
C: I would really like if Etna could become a Phistophilus Devil. Not the full CR10 plus class level, obviously :P. I was thinking that maybe we could make it work like the chain of feats for Vampires and Liches that there are in WotW: they're feat intensive chains, and they seem balanced. I'm aiming mostly for the contract related abilities, the whole Mephistopheles style and those sexy weapons and armors made of contracts :P

Secrets:
3. List two secrets about your character. Keep in mind secrets your character may not know yet.
A: Lady Farisa didn't murder Raphael. She was very happy that he kicked the bucket, but she had no part in it. Raphael simply died of old age.
B: Asmodeus has been moving Etna's life for a lot of time, even if she does barely know of his existence. Her unnatural affinity with contracts, and the fact that she refers at her wishcrafting powers as 'exacting the consequences of the binding contracts of words' are clues.
Bonus: I want to leave Lady Farisa's motives and true identity to you. Maybe she's a Succubus, a spy, another Asmodean: it won't be fun if I knew in advance. I trust that you'll come up with something devious. D:

Description:
Etna's small horns, two little black protrusions on her forehead, are usually covered by her long, shoulder-lenght hair. While taking an orange color most of the time, Etna's hair, constantly shifting like a live flame, brightens up and start to move like a crackling fire when she's angry, and lose their coloration in moments of great sadness. An attractive woman, she prefers to wear sober green or red-colored outfit, and she doesn't have the fascination that Ifriits usually have for extremely gaudy jewelry, preferring instead sobre jade or emerald ornaments.
She never really tried, but with some practice she could be able to easily camouflage her heritage, with only her eyes, with their bright yellow irises, raising some suspicions.ì
ìHer past experiences have left Etna a cold, calculating and ruthless person. Her previous pity for people that got exploited by others turned into annoyance and scorn, and in this she doesn't make any difference between poor and rich people: for her, the first are guilty of not being cunning or cynical enough to avoid their misfortunes, and the latter are not worthy of their power and wealth if they're not capable of maintaining it. This was also the reason as to why she didn't struggle much when she got captured, because she thinks that it's only fair that she got surpassed by someone superior, more cunning and sly. That doesn't mean that she wouldn't accept a second chance, if it was given to her...
Also, she has a particular respect for Arcane Casters and elderly people.

Part 2 questionnaire
Now I'm positive this I have to do like a questionnaire. :P

Here it is!:

1. How does your character interact with the others within a group?
Etna only heard of Asmodeus in the whispers of priests and on old records she cataloged, but as soon as she learns of his existence, she will almost immediately start worshiping him, seeing that his mindset is much alike her own. If these teachings come from a member of the party, she will hold a particular respect for that person.
While she will regard much of the melee classes as "brutes" (that could become, with time, "useful and reliable brutes"), she shows respect for both casters (particularly wizards) and elderly people in general.
She will keep in-character tensions to a minimum, as she understands that working together will be paramount to achieve her goals, and also because the only thing that will really make her lose her temper will be people badmouthing her dead father.
Also, she has a dislike for women that use their "features" to charm their way trough, as they remember Etna of her sister Elizabeth.

2. What is your character's role in a group?
Debuffer and battlefield controller! I'll try to be (one of) the party faces, maybe teaming with someone else to do the good cop/bad cop thing. I'll try to talk to enemies during battles: even if they can't be convinced that Asmodeus is the One True Way(TM), I can still use badly spelled phrases to trigger Wishbound Arcana.

3. How is your character not as they seems? I want one or two skills that would surprise others if they found out he knows them. Also include personality traits, positive or negative, that would similarly surprise others.
As I already said, Etna has a knack for laws and contracts: she will keep Knowledge(Law) and Linguistic always maxed (basing myself on a trait, the latter is used to hide your true intentions in a written text: that's what I'll do!). She's also way smarter than someone would think at a first glance (rocking that 14 INT!)
Her unusual Wishcrafter powers are bound to surprise some people, I'll add.

4. What are your character's goals, conscious and, perhaps, subconscious?
Already answered in Background and a previous spoiler.

5. How easily does your character love? Have they been in love?
It's a big part of the character that Etna swore to never love someone. In her head, it was love that made his father and her family weak to Lady Farisa's machinations.

6. Is your character racist at all, either now or in their past?
Not at all. Cunning is all that's important: you can be a Dwarf, a Elf, an Eldritch horror, a man, a woman, a child, an adult, rich, poor: as long as you can come on top with your brain, you have Etna's respect.

7. All people believe something that is not true, both about the world around them and about themselves. What lies/untruths does your character believe about themselves and the world around them?
Eeeeh, it'll take ages to write them all. Most important:
1)Lady Farisa did not kill her father.
2)Love doesn't make you weak.
3)The weak doesn't have to be crushed by the strong etc.
Having a distorted view of the world is what usually makes an Evil character! I could go on for ages!

8. How is your character about material possessions?
They are tools, and nothing more. You can go around, wearing expensive clothes to show that you're superior, but they won't make you that if you aren't in the first place.

9. What does your character perceive their major problems to be?
Etna knows that her Hubris was her downfall: underestimating Lady Farisa was a huge mistake. Being exaggeratedly sure of yourself makes so that you can't see your own weaknesses, and that is something that she learned the hard way.

10. What does he perceive the solutions to those problems to be?
Becoming more powerful and don't ignore anything or anyone because it doesn't seem a threat at a first glance: better safe than sorry.

11. What are your character's religious beliefs?
She didn't care for religion up to this point, but as soon as someone talks about the teachings of Asmodeus to her, she will convert in a heartbeat.

12. What does your character fear?
Failure. That's concise, but true. :P

13. How much of a temper does your character have? What sorts of things set them off?
Etna will get annoyed at people hitting on her, or just at dumb people in general: still, she will keep her composure. Her only 'Berserk Button' is her father: if someone start badmouthing him, they best start running really, really fast.

Done! Everything's okay?

10 minute background (how do I keep missing this stuff?):

1. Write five things essential to your character’s background including previous adventures and events.

A) the murder of his parents during a home invasion. This sets him on his path of vengeance.

B) his travels throughout the world, learning martial arts in Tien Xia, Investigative techniques from pathfinders in Absalom, The art of disguise and theatrics in the nation of Cheliax, and stealth in the jungles of The Mwangi Expanse.

C) His return to seek vengeance on the killers of his parents, only to find they had already been granted justice. This is the tipping point that leads him down a dark path.

D) his early attempts at government reform, which fail dramatically, showing him that he can't work within the system to enact change.

E) His campaign of vigilante justice as "The Hunter" in the capitol of Talingarde.

F) His arrest for sedition and imprisonment.

2. List your character’s goals and things you want to see happen to your character.

My character is obsessed with seeing the topple of the regime of "corrupted nobles" and the move to a more egalitarian form of government.

Things I would like to see happen to him include having situations pop up that reinforce or make him question his beliefs (i.e. corrupt nobles, "innocent" nobles, children villains, and that sort of thing).

3. List two secrets about your character. Keep in mind secrets your character may not know yet.

A) the "botched robbery" that resulted in his parent's murder was actually an assassination.

B) He has a secret identity that no one knows about (he knew that he was going to be arrested, and hid everything that he used for being a vigilante).

4. List three people that are tied to the character through blood, romance or honor. Remember to include positive and negative reflections.

A) His sensei Kurgane. Kurgane wanted him to turn from the path of violence, but Davain knew that he could not. Davian has the deepest respect for Kurgane, but he knows that he can't follow his path.

B)Lord Commander Reginald Smythe. The lord commander sums up everything that Davian despises about the nobility: old world money that believes that the world exists to serve him. Reginald is corrupt as hell, and enjoys beating and forcing himself on his servants.

C) While he doesn't know it, Davian has a brother who is a bastard.

5. Describe your character in detail as you see fit. Relate any additional information you believe is important or required. Include personality and mannerisms.

Davian is in actually two completely different people:

Davian Sol is outgoing, likeable, and talkative. He's good at connecting people with each other, but kind of unintelligent.

The Hunter is brooding, patient, intelligent, and methodical.

Physically, Davian is 5'10", 130 lbs of solid muscle (he has less than 2% body fat). He is "forgettably attractive" (i.e. he is good looking, but most people don't remember much about his appearance other than that), with short cut yet stylish black hair and brown eyes. He tends to wear colorful clothing that is cut in such a way that it allows freedom of movement. He avoids the color black whenever possible, so as to limit people's association between him and the hunter.

Physically, The Hunter is 6', 150 lbs male who wears head-to-toe black, from his hooded cloak to the light boots he wears (which have soles that leave tracks that show a heavyset barefoot female.

Davian's story truly begins at the age of 9, on a fateful night in which his parents, both merchants who ran the Sol mercantile empire, (easily the largest coster and caravan company in all of Talingarde) decided to skip the theater and have a family night at home instead. The next thing that young Davain heard was the sound of breaking glass, screams, and loud, harsh voices coming from downstairs. Hiding as his father always instructed him to, he did not actually hear the murder of his parents, but he certainly saw the aftereffects as he crept downstairs to find both his parents tied to a chair with their throats slit. upon seeing that image, a part of him broke inside. He summoned the watch, and the investigation began almost immediately. He told the watch captain that he was going to stay with family in Taldor, but he had already made a decision that he would do whatever it took to see that the criminals who killed his family, and those like them, would never harm another family if he could help it. Thus began his tour of Golarion, trading money and favors to get access to some of the greatest actors, warriors, investigators, and scouts of the age: He spent several years at a remote monastery in The Tien Xia side of the world's end mountains, honing his unarmed combat abilities, there was the year spent helping the city watch catch mastermind criminals, or the next 2 years studying with Karamina, one of the greatest disguise artists and female impersonators of the Chelish opera. He did a brief excursion in the Mwangi expanse, where he learned how to think like a predator and move in such a way as to avoid notice by them.

All of this training culminated in the day that he returned home, eager to begin his search for the fiends who murdered his family. Receiving only the second true shock in his life, he discovered that the murderers had been tried, convicted, and executed for the murder of his parents. Justice had prevailed; yet there would be no catharsis for Davain. Over the next couple of years, he ran his coster, which showed record profits never even seen in the days when his parents ran it, while at night he would look at the evidence of the crime that he broke in and stole from the city watch. It was here that he discovered a pattern: the investigating watch officers were in the pocket of one of the local crime syndicates. The further he investigated, the more evidence he saw that pointed to everyone in the watch being corrupt. He tried to speak out against the watch in the various city forums (as well as with the appointed city officials), but he was continually disbelieved or not taken seriously.

Deciding that the system was not working because the entire system was corrupt, Davian decided that he would need to become justice for the city; with that goal in mind, he took out the plans for the outfit that he had designed during his travel, made several alterations, debuted himself as "The Hunter". He began patrolling via the rooftops at night, inflicting brutal punishment on criminals he found but always leaving them alive (usually with multiple broken bones). Flash forward nearly a decade, where the criminals had pretty much fled Talingarde for greener pastures, and The Hunter was still on the hunt, by now a well-oiled ambush machine. By this point, Davian had convinced himself that everyone in power in the nation, from the king on down, were corrupt and actively oppressing the few innocents who suffered silently under their reign (for fear of retaliations, or so he believed). His beliefs were, of course, propped up by the manhunt that existed for his hunter persona.

As Davian Sol, he continued to speak out against the king and government, which turned out to be the break that certain individuals within the government, led by Lord Commander Reginald Smythe (a man that was a war profiteer and incredibly greedy), who called on the government to have Davian arrested for sedition and his coster seized. He managed to bribe or persuade enough people to have charges brought against Davian, and for Davian, this was a catalyzing event. Knowing that he was going to be arrested, Davian hid all of his equipment that he used as the hunter in an underground cave, along with what money he could immediately get his hands on. He did not resist the charges, and was sentenced to hang.

And that is where his next chapter begins.

@ Etna Agnes
Phase Two is now complete. Very good background, enjoyed reading it.

@Vrog Skyreaver
I need a confirmed race and class for this character.Ninja? correct?

What you do is take all the information listed in the 10 minute background and now make a back story out of it. Make sure to include all the information in the story. This lets me judge both your writing style as well as your writing ability.

I also need to know if your character wishes to use the house rule or not.

The Exchange

To be clear, the 10 minute background is to serve as an outline for the actual background? So for phase 2, you'd like an actual background that takes into account information from the 10/min one?

Also, phase 1.

Character name: Sio Halifax-Lin
Race: Half-Elf
Class: Alchemist

1. Experience with the rules: most of the basics, still learning obscure rules as I play

2. Experience with PbP: Been doing it since last year, have one longterm game still ongoing, a few shorter ones closer to the beginning

3. Expectations: To flesh out a character who's physical form starts to reflect the monster she is as time goes on.

4. Philosophy as a PbP player: don't be a jerk.

5. Why are you applying to this game? I like our home game.

6. Define what you think is good role-playing in PbP. Keeping things interesting and moving at the same time.

7. What is your experience with this adventure path? The Player's guide.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17=Int
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8=Wis
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8=Cha
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14=Str
Focus:Dexterity
Folible:Consitution

Gonna start working on my character.

Uncle Taco wrote:

You can submit it in list form first if you like (however it is not required), but you will have to incorporate it into a background story as well for submission. Some people like to do the list first then use that as a outline for building the story.

So basically phase two should consist of a background and the questionnaire. It should also include what your primary role in the party would be and a character name and if your character will use the house rule mentioned above.

I have also started your Phase One application.

I will be a human ninja, and I am indifferent on using the house rule, and would vote for 6 characters (I updated my 10 min background to include a written background, which I was doing while you posted above).

Vrog Skyreaver wrote:

Phase Two for your character has been completed. Thank You.

The character I would like to submit will be a Hobgoblin Rogue (dual archetype ***if allowed***) (Scout and Charlatan ) named Jalik Daweri

My vote for party size follows: I vote party of 6

Phase 1 Questionaire

1. Your experience with the rules
I am fairly confident with the Pathfinder gaming ruleset (3 years experience), your identified expectations, and house rules/variants specified within this post. Additonally I have played D&D, AD&D, and many variants of roleplaying for over 25 years. Lastly the DM is always right!

2. Your experience with PbP
I have only been involved with PbP for a few months; however, I am finding that it is a much deeper experience than tabletop.

3. Expectations for playing and what you want out of the experience
I expect to delve into the game world and become a part of it with my character and the party's reactions to the environment as the focal point to my experience and the DM as the visionary to interactions within it.

4. Philosophy as a PbP player
I would say my philosophy into PbP is unique with every gaming experience, group of players, and DM/GM. Particularly with this unique storyline I would say that it would be to become more deeply involved in character development and interactions with the post than in most as it is designed for a much more detailed gaming experience and longer timeline.

5. Why you are applying to this game?
The concept presented by the Way of the Wicked is a very unique experience that I think would be highly enjoyable and worth the time to invest in.

6. Define what you think good role-playing is in PbP.
I would define good role playing in PbP as timely responses that enrich the experience as well as inform the group and GM/DM of the actions, emotions, personal character of the in-game player and environment.

7. What is your experience with this adventure path?
I have never heard of this adventure path until I read the posting this week.

@Avarus
Phase One has been completed and I have started your application. Thank you and good luck.

1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13
18: Charisma
8: Dexterity

My character concept is a kitsune sorcerer (rakshasha-blooded) with a focus on enchantment magic and shapeshifting.

hmmm... dot.

DM Asmodeus wrote:
Ok TarkXT I have got your application started, I will need a basic character concept and your vote for 4 or 6 players to complete Phase One.

Quick character concept is an infamous murderer, mercenary, and survival specialist in his 10th prison stay. Maybe they'll finally manage to hang him...(think a cross between Riddick and The Hound)

And I vote 4. 6 sounds great and I'll be happy for it byt 4 means the group moves faster.

@ DM Barcas.
Got it. That will complete your phase one application. Thanks.

@TarkXT
Give me a little more than that, how about a class and race.

Human, undecided on class but most likely a martial. Either barbarian, boodrager, slayer, or ranger depending on what ticks my fancy or better matches the characters experience and personality.

Thing is I don't treat mechanics and story as two separate things but something that grows from one another. I pick this trait or feat because it's good. But why does he have it? See what I mean.

So for now I have a basic foundation a mean spirited martial with a soft spot for the defenseless but never compromises his own survival over others.

@ TarkXT

Gotcha, that's enough to finish the phase one application. Good luck. I look forward to learning more about him in Phase two.

This interests me. :-)

I also played in the same now-on-hiatus Way of the Wicked game as DM Barcas with this character: Ethaniel Tessarin

I should say that I am not applying with this guy, he is just an example. I will see about thinking up a concept and then I shall be back.

Character Concepts: Still debating, we do have time before we finalize right? But consider #1 as my primary choice.
1. Human Wizard (Creation) with a couple of levels of Monk of the Empty Hand later on.
2. Drow Demonic Apostle (Cleric)
3. Dhamphir Undead Lord (Cleric)

Party Size Vote: 6

Phase 1 Questionnaire
1. Your experience with the rules
You mean Pathfinder rules? Average, I think. I only started playing May this year, so there are some rules and its combinations that I haven't seen yet outside of reading CRB. When I make an action based on a rule assumption (example), I always point it out.

2. Your experience with PbP
Most of my games are thru PbP since the pacing is much better for us with extensive work schedules. I think I joined my first thread last June.

3. Expectations for playing and what you want out of the experience
Hmmm... tough question. The closest I can say on that is: Explore and apply a darker part of my persona. I'm not naturally 'dark' or 'evil' in truth, but perhaps I will find how far I can go even if only with an RPG character with a much wider roleplay possibility compared to video games.

4. Philosophy as a PbP player
Roleplay is king. PbP is a place where a real story should be developed with as much detail as possible.

5. Why you are applying to this game?
Same answer to #3. Explore and apply a darker part of my persona. Also, I like the campaign setting and haven't played one similar to it so far.

6. Define what you think good role-playing is in PbP.
Make use of out-of-combat opportunities to develop your character and his/her relationship with the world and its inhabitants. Using adjectives and adverbs goes a long way to paint the world and your adventure in it.

7. What is your experience with this adventure path?
None. I've applied for one before but was not selected.

A question because I am on my phone and without access to the PDF: Can the racial +2 ability bonus be added to the Focus or Foible ability, in effect turning it to 20 or 10 respectively? Or is there a rule saying that these two must remain at 18 and 8?

Hail Asmodeus ! I would be very interested to start a PbP game as it would fill my unfulfilled hunger for RPG as my group has been slowed down to death due to real life hassle.

I really hope I'm not too late to apply (is the deadline for phase I still 17th of August?. I can perfectly your concern and your long questionnaire as playing RPG campaign implies dedication and motivation from all players (and DM of course).

My concept can range a lot but I love to play evil characters.
Ideas still need to be developped. I always dreamed of playing a Magus but I could also play an Asmodean cleric (one of the few who didn't burn on the pyre). I need to think about it but I'm pretty sure I can come with something. Probably some Evil guy (with a capital E) with style (BBEG as seen in James Bond) with an Island full of minions I can whip.

Phase 1 Questionnaire
1. Your experience with the rules
I started playing D&D with the boxed set end of 80's. I DMed more than I played. We started Pathfinder after 3.5. As Pathfinder and 3.5 are quite similar I think I have a dozens of year of experience on the system. As a player I'm not an optimizer. I'm more a roleplayer than a rollplayer and as a DM rule of fun is more important than anything else.

2. Your experience with PbP
Quite limited but I'm really eager to start. I played a PbP game called "In Nomine Satanis/Magna Veritas". I think it was called "In Nomine" where I was playing a devil named Major Longhorn. :)

3. Expectations for playing and what you want out of the experience
The advantage I think with PbP is that you can really develop the RP, what your character think and does and says. So it's a different experience from tabletop I believe although again my experience is short.

4. Philosophy as a PbP player
Well I think I answered in 3.

5. Why you are applying to this game?
Why are you Dming this game?...
Just because I like playing evil guys (but not the chaotic evil guy who kills everyone but a lot of my characters have ranged from psychotic to evil mastermind) and Way of the Wicked is just an awesome AP.

6. Define what you think good role-playing is in PbP.
I suppose there is no good role-playing as such. But If i had to define it I would say that you have to BE your character, think as your character and most important... have fun.

7. What is your experience with this adventure path?
That may be a major problem for you. I'm DMing this adventure as we speak although my group is now at a half in the middle of book 2. I've run book1 and half of book 2 and read book 3 and partly book 4. I havn't read book 5 and 6 if we ever go to that length. I will try not to use this knowledge and do metagaming. Of course I don't remember the exact dungeons and so on...
My aim is to focus more on RP. Or... another idea is that I could be a stupid NE barbarian (an Israen) who tries to revenge from of all the taldirans (or whatever their name) who conquered the island. Therefore I wouldn't have to give clever ideas...

The choice is all yours and I will accept it. But I hope I will be one of the chosen ones ^^

There's no such limitation, as far as I'm aware: you can put the 18 and add the racial bonus. Focus and Foible is done on purpose to build powerful characters. Spell DCs will be sky high. :P

Also, DM Asmodeus, I know that you already said no to 3pp, and it doesn't concern me because I already have Etna finalized, but are you allowing the 4 Archetypes made by Fire Mountain Games for Way of the Wicked?
Someone could be interested in those, particularly the Unholy Barrister, as it has the ability to cure allies even if it's an evil-aligned Cleric.

Here they are:
Cleric:Unholy Barrister
Monk:Hand of Tyranny
Inquisitor:Torture Master
Anti-Paladin:Lord of Darkness

Am I the only one that finds the idea of punching people in the face to cast Command on them is hilarious?

@ DFang
Your Phase One Application is complete. Thank you and good luck.

The Focus or Foible scores are static (Like the dice rolls) they are before any racial modifiers are applied.

Yes, all Fire Mountain material for Pathfinder that is designed for Way of the Wicked is allowed.

Class was Human (most likely) Oracle(Heavens), Curse (Blackened Hands or Legalistic most likely)

4 on table is good but I believe 6 on PbP is better.

So 6 for me.

Dark Archive

Actually, I'm thinking I might play a Tiefling Bard instead of the Half-orc Oracle. I've never played one before, so it might be another neat change. The character would still be technically be a half-orc (orc father, human mother, but his Infernal blood would override both) so he'd end up having a more solid reason to worship Asmodeus AND it gives me some extra room to work with (the Oracle would have had to wear a mask all the time so people wouldn't be like IT'S A MONSTER, while the Bard will just need to hide his tail and wear a hood).

I'm still working on Part 2 of the questionnaire, but it may take awhile to get it filled out properly. I respectfully request your patience. :)

Life and backstory of Jalik Daweri – Hobgoblin Charlatan Scout

Phase 2 Entry I accept and wish to use variants/hero points

Background:

The Daweri clan is a hobgoblin tribe in the Central Mountains of the Savage Northern lands of Talingarde. This tribe like most hobgoblin tribes is a militaristic community of fierce warriors whereby power is granted through hierarchical order based on individual merit but unusual in its structure as it works closely with divine magic and does not shun it to the outskirts of its communities. The clan is made up of less than 100 members and segmented into five general sectors or communities: the military, the clergy, engineering/science, the others, and slaves. The Leader and General of this tribe is the glorified war hero, killer of elves and dwarves, Marek. At his side is his tribal Shaman of Asmodeus and bride, Amiki. Although this society is egalitarian in nature several of the offspring of Marek and Amiki hold leadership positions within the clan.

They have four children of which three hold leadership position within the clan. The oldest son Omak is a war hero and captain in the clan. The second child and only daughter, Halii, like her mother is a respected member of the Asmodeus clergy positioned just below her mother. The third child and second son, Jeam, is also a military veteran. Jeam is now Captain and controller of the pit bosses of the slaves. Lastly there is Jalik, he was born 17 years ago the last of his family. He was sickly born as hobgoblins are concerned and thought by his parents to die in training which starts at three months of age.
Jalik like all hobgoblin children was cast out of the household into the hands of the clergy at three months for education and establishment into the hobgoblin society or Daweri clan. Jalik learned faster than his peers. It also helped that occasionally his mother would sneak into the sleeping area and shower him with love and affection. It was an unusual aspect for any hobgoblin to show affection but he knew that he and his mother were somehow different.

Jalik by the time he was 10 years old he was tall, fast, and lanky. This made him much clumsier than the others but through brutal military training over the next three years he learned to control his body. Although he would get mauled in hand to hand combat training he would never gave up. It is here he learned that intellect and cunning would change the way he fought and dealt with others. Continually he would be beaten physically but somehow outwit his opponent through tactics and strategy. This unusual ability brought him respect among his peers.

At the age of 14 his training was complete and he would be assigned a position within the society based upon his testing. Jalik knew that he was different with his light grey tone and tall slender build but thought that he would most assuredly be assigned a position within the military guard like his brothers. He did earn of a position but it was not an honorable position within the military. Jalik was assigned to the scouts, the lowliest of the military order. This deeply disappointed his father who disowned him.

Now cast from his father’s eye he still kept contact with his mother but it became harder and harder as time passed. Marek would have his elite guard block his entrance and turn him away constantly. Jalik didn’t entirely give up as it was not in his nature but it is here that he honed his stealthier skills and mastered several other languages.
On one mission he was assigned to infiltrate a small village and gather information for an upcoming raid to capture slaves and eliminate the settlement’s military. Jalik made it into town and was mistaken for a half orc. Luckily his training paid off as he fluently spoke orc and persuaded the villagers that he was a member of a known mercenary band in the area. This event spawned many more like it. He began to spend more time with other races and sneak into villages throughout the area to learn more of the cultures and in particular their ladies. Women were a weakness for him at first as he did not know how to approach them with confidence but trial and error over the next few years made him a master.

He would use this newly acquired mastery to obtain information and materials that he would trade without clan approval. He would bring others into his planned outings and through this became more popular until word got to his father. Rather than risk being tortured by his own father for failure to comply with clan law Jalik left.

Over the next few years Jalik would move from one town to another posing as a freelance half orc soldier named Jalik Daweri after his father’s clan. His cunning, bravery, and ability to infiltrate areas and likeability would get him jobs and access to some higher levels of authority. He has even tried his hand in the intrigue of political manipulation for high paying merchants and even the House of Havelyn.

A year or so ago he was hired to acquire knowledge held within the House of Havelyn. His target was a beautiful maiden with the house for which he spent months getting extremely familiar. His contractor was quite pleased with the results as he conned the young lady into stealing the material from her family and giving it to him. Days later he would get paid and never saw the girl again.

This one job provided more connections that would eventually lead to his arrest. Days ago in the height of a job he began to coerce local leadership that the House Darius was unfit to rule the land. He was so convincing that the town took up arms against the King in revolt.
Jalik was unaware of the town’s actions/attack on House Darius. Jalik was spending the evening as usual in a village tavern drinking with a few ladies. His long time friend Miles Kilmeade was tending bar when suddenly The Darius Guard tore into the tavern. Miles knew it had to be related to his dark friend Jalik and screamed for Jalik to hide. It was too late. It was there Jalik was seized by the guard and charged with Sedition.

Background Concepts:

5 Minimum Background /Concept Elements
1) He comes from a long line of honored warriors of the Daweri Clan. His father, Marek is the General and leader the Hobgoblin Tribe, located in the Savage Northlands. His father cast him out of the family as he was ashamed of his son for not being a ferocious warrior like his brothers, Omak & Jeam
2) He like most hobgoblins served in the military but due to his speed, stealthy nature, and linguistic skills was an ideal candidate as a scout
3) Left his clan after committing violations of the order
4) Although outspoken, and articulate he is nearly stone faced in terms of showing emotions thus making him an extraordinary master of lies and deception
5) As a slender light grey skinned hobgoblin he is quite often mistaken for a small half orc
6) He quickly gains favor from those around him and is often called upon in leadership situations by them
7) Enjoys the company of others, especially women, and is quick to utilize their skills and abilities to his own favor. This has gotten him into trouble with the ladies a few times.

Goals:

2 Goals for the character
1) I would like to see Marek (Jalik’s father) pleased with the accomplishments of his son and possibly reunite the two for some greater glory.
2) Possibly a leadership role commanding a group envisioned with controlling land and power.

Secrets:

2 Minimum Secrets about your character
1) Jalik’s mother Amiki is actually half human and half hobgoblin. She is the result of slave rape but due to her size and abilities she was raised like a hobgoblin rather than a slave. Jalik found this out when trying to contact his mother this last year.
2) Forbidden love - One lady friend, a human Talirean from House Havelyn of whom he has long forgotten was quite smitten with him until she realized she was used to get something he wanted. She now seeks revenge on Jalik.
3) Jalik is part of an underground community that deals in the trading of political information.

Relationships:

3 close relationships
1) Best friend – Male Human Talirean Bartender : Miles Kilmeade. They have become close over the years as Jalik spends a lot of time drinking and telling stories in Miles’ Tavern.
2) Childhood friend and now enemy – Hobgoblin Scout – Arek. Arek was betrayed by Jalik in a deal gone bad. Arek spent time in prison because of lies Jalik told the authorities.
3) Friend and Business partner – Black Market Trader Half Elf : Kyran – They have been trading stolen goods for over a year now and splitting the profits. It is how Jalik earns his money.

Mannerisms/Memories/Quirks:

3 memories, mannerisms, or quirks
1) Jalik constantly tells stories of his accomplishments. Usually these are embellishments of actual events or outright lies. One such memory involved an escape from capture by authorities. Through cunning or skill he is quite adept at getting out of confinement as he has been caught on several occasions and always finds a way out of trouble.
2) Time as a scout and infiltrator of societies has provided Jalik with tactics he often uses to end a situation quickly via combat. He usually strikes with some missile weapon at short distance from the dark and then follows with a surprising charge.
3) Jalik time away from his village/clan has left him with no true sense of home or his ancestry. This absence has led to a profound need for acceptance and desire to lead others. He takes this role whenever capable and sometimes even when he shouldn’t.

I have made the change to your character concept. You have plenty of time for Phase 2. A lot of people are still on Phase One.

@ Avarus
I have added the background information into your Phase Two file. I still need you to fill out the Phase Two Questionnaire.

Jalik Daweri : Phase 2 Questionaire

The Questionnaire:
1. How does your character interact with the others within a group?
Jalik is weary of Arcane Magic and will stay clear of members with this power. Holders of Divine Magic will earn his utmost idealization and he will try to make them happy as they remind him of his mother but he will not seek to join the church or its specific ambitions even though he does see Asmodeus as his deity and religious icon.
As for warriors/martial fighters he will try to win their respect through indirect challenges or stories of past accomplishments. Wine/Spirits/and Ale is the warrior’s friend and he utilizes to gain their trust whenever possible. As for all other manner of characters his will seek to befriend them where he sees they can be to his use but will not follow anyone he believes is less intelligent than himself.

2. What is your character's role in a group?
He is the group’s primary Scout, information gatherer, trickster, and master of lies & deceit.

3. How is your character not as they seems? I want one or two skills that would surprise others if they found out he knows them. Also include personality traits, positive or negative, that would similarly surprise others.
Jalik will never identify himself as a hobgoblin but most often as a half human some identify him as a half orc due to his uncanny strength. Most would find it odd that he is quite familiar with heraldry and knowledge of nobles. Additionally his skill in linguistics and ability to speak several languages such as elven, dwarven, orc, and goblin.

4. What are your character's goals, conscious and, perhaps, subconscious?
Jalik wishes to one day rise to a position of great power with the possibility of somehow reconciling with his now distant family.

5. How easily does your character love? Have they been in love?
Jalik has never been in love and his constant manipulation of the opposite sex has left him almost cold to it. He does however hold a deep love for his mother.

6. Is your character racist at all, either now or in their past?
Jalik was raised to hate Dwarves and Elves but has lost most of that instilled hatred maintaining his false identity.

7. All people believe something that is not true, both about the world around them and about themselves. What lies/untruths does your character believe about themselves and the world around them?
Jalik believes the world can be conquered without numbers and that he has the intellect and vision to make it possible one day. History has taught Jalik and the Talireans that overwhelming numbers do not win Wars as the House Darius came into power with a much smaller force than his adversary.

8. How is your character about material possessions?
Jalik is fond of money but today is not that fond of possessions, they slow him down. He would one day love to bath in his own riches in the largest keeps, and castles of the land.

9. What does your character perceive their major problems to be?
Jalik believes he is trapped in the life of another as he cannot tell others of his identity in fear that it will somehow shatter his vision of grandeur and make him an outcast.

10. What does he perceive the solutions to those problems to be?
One solution to this identity crisis would be to reconcile with his family through great honor to the tribe. This could put him in position to once again be the Hobgoblin he was born and unite all the tribes/nations in control of Talingarde.

11. What are your character's religious beliefs?
He is religious to the point of believing and honoring one true deity (Asmodeus) but he will not go so far as following the church or making it larger than his own ambitions.

12. What does your character fear?
Jalik’s only true fear is his loss of his future ambitions,; thus, that which could hinder these ambitions must be destroyed or weakened.

13. How much of a temper does your character have? What sorts of things set them off?
Jalik has learned to control his temper and is not easily offended. If he is angered he will attempt to use his cunning and wit to turn the tables on the offender.

@ Avarus

Thank you your Phase 2 application is complete.

Character Concepts: Not entirely sure to be honest. Most probably Neutral Evil and human, certainly male. As for class, I am leaning heavily towards one of the ACG classes; a Slayer (probably Stygian Slayer or Cutthroat) or a Swashbuckler (maybe a Flying Blade) or even a Brawler.

Party Size Vote: 6

Phase 1 Questionnaire

1. Your experience with the rules
I have been playing Pathfinder since 2009, so I am fairly well acquainted with the ruleset. And even when I have some doubt concerning some rule or other, I take the time to look it up and read it before using it or incorporating in a post. Other than that I have also played 3.5 and 3rd Edition before that, as well as a little AD&D and Dragonlance Saga back in the day.

2. Your experience with PbP
My experience with PbP is as long as my experience with Pathfinder actually, seeing as how I have been playing Pathfinder exclusively in PbPs, so since 2009. I have always participated as a player and I have so far been in about a dozen games. In fact, you can check them out in my profile's Campaigns tab if you wish. It should also give you an idea about my characters and my style in general.

3. Expectations for playing and what you want out of the experience
Rich and interesting characters, posts well worth the time taken to write or read them, a story not unlike the stories of books we have all read time and again, the chance to take my imagination for another spin. Not to mention fun, a good way to pass the time and the opportunity to grow as both a player and a writer. And of course the chance to play one of the many character concepts that pass through my mind all the time.

4. Philosophy as a PbP player
PbP gives the opportunity to not simply play a game, but actively craft a story. More so than PnP where one may simply state what his character is doing and then roll some dice, PbP gives you the opportunity to really be part of the character and the story he or she is in.

5. Why you are applying to this game?
Besides finding the campaign itself and the opportunity to play an evil character of interest to me, the fact that you are taking the time to filter the applicants so thoroughly and the fact that certain good players have applied makes that interest even greater.

6. Define what you think good role-playing is in PbP
Interaction with not only the DM and his NPCs, but also -and perhaps more importantly- with the other player characters, as well as in-character consistency (I even do not mind friction and conflict between characters, as long as it stays strictly IC and does not spill over into OOC, but I never initiate or prolong such conflict and friction). Such things make not only for a better and well-crafted story, but also help develop both one's character and that character's relationship with the others and his connection to the world around him more organically.

7. What is your experience with this adventure path?
Like DM Barcas, I have played as far as the escape from Branderscar and the entry into the Knot. No knowledge of what takes place beyond that.

@ F. Castor

Thanks for your Phase One application. I have recorded it. Good Luck.

@ Everyone Else

I now have 20 Phase One applications so I will need to readjust the ending date for Phase One open enrollments. The scheduled ending date is Sunday August 17th at 11:59pm.

However if I reach 30 applications prior to that date then I will close open enrollment for phase one at that time. I feel that 30 is way more than enough to find six great players out of. Yes I say six, since the majority of the votes have went that way.

The final group will initially consist of 8 players (6 players and 2 alternates.)

Alternates will be on standby in case something happens with one of the chosen six.

Good luck everyone. Keep working on those Phase Two applications. As soon as we get Phase Two applications in and close open enrollment I will give instructions for Phase Three applicants.

I am looking to play a Tiefling Vivisectionist Alchemist that branches into Assassin later on. The character is built on the idea of poisons. He would use his extracts and mutagen to enhance his combat and stealth ability.

I would be happy with 4 or 6, but I would prefer 6 players.

1. Your experience with the rules
Extensive. (D&D Player since 2e, Pathfinder since release. Current Home and PFS DM.)
2. Your experience with PbP
Moderate. I used to play PbP back with D&D 3.5e, just joined my first Pathfinder PbP recently.
3. Expectations for playing and what you want out of the experience
Deep character development and story involvement. I am also looking forward to a dark/adult pathfinder experience
4. Philosophy as a PbP player
Read Twice, Post Once. I like to be able to take advantage of the "slow" pace of PbP to fully incorporate a RP into every post.
5. Why you are applying to this game?
Sort of a spin-off of #3; some of the most fun I have ever had was in 3.5e playing an evil campaign built around the book of vile darkness. It allows a different mindset and a refreshing challenge to RP.
6. Define what you think good role-playing is in PbP.
It involves 3 parts:
First is taking the time to build a strong character with a deep backstory and core ideals.
Second requires attention to detail and critical thinking based on the information provided by the DM. PbP is not like live games where you can ask for clarification on every detail and expect to be hand-held through the game.
Third requires sticking to the character you have built and playing the way it should be played. There are times for powergaming, but in my opinion, PbP is time for roleplay instead.

7. What is your experience with this adventure path?
Essentially none. I have read the player's guide

@ jooker

Thank you your phase one application is complete. Good luck.

Character - Tkaara Fiakben - Human - Oracle(Heavens)

Phase 2 -- 10 Minute Background & Questionnaire:

1. How does your character interact with the others within a group?
Always personable. One does not gain new clients if the old clients hate you. She will listen carefully to make sure she understands the issue at hand, but will not hesitate to speak up and make sure that all understand the parameters of the issue and what the potential ramifications and outcomes are dependent upon the option chosen. (In other words, she has years as a barrister/attorney and speaks and acts as one, albeit not the smartest one).

2. What is your character's role in a group?
She is a face character. She will be a healer, but also quite capable at defending herself and assisting the front line fighters when necessary, whether it be in melee or with her magic.

3. How is your character not as they seems? I want one or two skills that would surprise others if they found out he knows them. Also include personality traits, positive or negative, that would similarly surprise others.
She is trained as a barrister. She knows the laws of the land and can usually predict how most of the normal government officials will react when something happens - emergency protocols, legal process, command structure, etc. Unfortunately, she tends to be cocky and overconfident in her abilities, which lead to her eventual downfall and descent into darkness (which is another trait about her that few would expect.) One problem is that she has never been the sharpest. Thus, while she usually makes wise decisions, she frequently does not come up with the most creative solutions to problems.

Also, while she is a creature of the courtroom, growing up, she spent much time outdoors watching animals, learning to follow and watch them. Even hunting when she felt so inclined.

4. What are your character's goals, conscious and, perhaps, subconscious?
She feels that she was entrapped. She knows she did what she is accused of, but does not believe it is her fault. For that reason, revenge has crept into her usually logical mind (likely caused by unnatural, and possibly otherworldly, causes). At this time, she is not a purely evil character, but has become so embittered that she blames all in the system for her current predicament, and, thus, has become blinded by her anger such that she now blames the guards, and most anyone else tied to the government of Talingarde as being responsible for her issues. Eventually, her actions will cause a full shift from a more neutral position to an evil Asmodean mindset.

She always envisioned herself becoming the greatest barrister in the history of the land. Something her limited intellect would likely never allow. She never considered joining the bench, but this is something that she would happily aspire to with the power and prestige that comes with such an assignment.

5. How easily does your character love? Have they been in love?
Tkaara is a very attractive woman. She knows that a pretty smile at the right time can easily be the difference between a year in prison and a slap on the wrist. However, she has never had time for love, despite more than a few pleas from various suitors, she has spent her time working cases and representing clients, which has resulted in more than a few missed "dates". She is not nobility, but grew up the daughter of a middle class shop keeper. Although she is capable of love, it is not something that she has ever truly thought about. If the right person arrived, love would be a possibility, but up to this point, it has been more of a tool for her professional advancement.

6. Is your character racist at all, either now or in their past?
Tkaara is not the biggest fan of other races. Talingarde is primarily human with the other races making up a very small part of the population. However, as a barrister, she has represented many accused of other races. Usually these accused were falsely blamed for crimes because of the color of their skin, pointyness of their ears, or vestigial tail. Thus, she has learned to work with and accept those of other races. If it were her choice, she would likely not choose one of another race as her best friend, but she knows that the other races are just that, other races, and not something to be feared or hated for no reason.

7. All people believe something that is not true, both about the world around them and about themselves. What lies/untruths does your character believe about themselves and the world around them?
She usually believes she is right, even when she is wrong. She believes that it was a grievous mistake in the system that caused her to be caught. She believes that the legal system is a fair balance, albeit a slightly skewed one, that brings about justice. She does not realize the way that other barristers and judges can be manipulated - other than by the pretty smiles she uses - through bribes and threats.

8. How is your character about material possessions?
She likes material possessions. As a barrister, she made a fair living and enjoyed jewelry and fine clothing. She has always been a material girl who would rather go without dinner for a few days to afford the newest styles out of Oppara, than go without the clothes.

9. What does your character perceive their major problems to be?
Her major problem is an almost paranoid belief that someone is against her. She has not figured out why someone sought to entrap her, or who, but obviously she should not be blamed for the problems that got her caught. I mean, Embezzlement, that is not something she would do. So, the money was found in her possession, and she has vague memories of receiving it, but there must have been a mistake. And, darn-nit, she is going to figure out who is responsible and make them pay.

10. What does he perceive the solutions to those problems to be?
She has to get free to prove she is innocent. That it was all just a big mistake. She will figure out a way to prove she did not take the money to cover up the Baron's daughter's infidelity. Yeh, it was in her possession and she had a new set of clothes in her closet, but she could not have done it. Could she?

11. What are your character's religious beliefs?
She was raised worshipping Iomedae, as were most others. During her legal studies, she strayed away from devout worship and began to focus more on the law and contracts. Sure, there were divine beings out there, but with a good contract and laws to enforce it, who needs gods. At this point, she has not been to any temple in several years. She knows of Asmodeus and that he is the Lord of Contracts, but has never attempted to learn much of him. Why should she? The rulers of Talingarde claim Asmodeus should not be worshipped, and why should she doubt such great rulers. . . . Hmmm, she thinks, if they are so great, why did they allow me to be entrapped?

12. What does your character fear?
She fears the unknown. She likes things to be orderly and organized. Every night she would tidy up her desk. Actually, now that she is thinking about it, for the past year she seems to have become quite sloppy at this.

In her home, every mug and dish has a place. The flowers in her yard are always weeded and planted in perfect rows. Her clothes are carefully organized by color and style - oldest in the rear as one cannot be seen in last years styles, unless it comes back into style.

13. How much of a temper does your character have? What sorts of things set them off?
She has historically had a fairly cool temper. She will act offended and annoyed when necessary or when presenting an argument, but rarely loses her cool. Over the past year, ever since that strange client retained her, what was his name, she cannot for the life of her recall it, she has gotten to be more of a hothead. She still keeps her cool well, but on more than one occasion in certain cases, she has lost her temper causing the judge to reprimand her, and on two occasions causing her client to lose the case.

What always annoys her are those who do not believe in doing things logically. The world is organized, and all people should realize this and seek to stay equally organized. If there is a plan, others should follow it, not question it.

@ Tirion

Got it. Now I need for you to do the 10 minute background and incorporate that into her written background story and submit it. I also need to know if Tkaara will use the houserule or not.

** awesomeness **...

Lawyer sis!

The more I read it, the more parallelisms and complete opposite points of view I find: if we get both selected it'll be hilarious(and awesome. Really awesome)!

Itching to read the full background! still, I liked Morossa better...

Let's just say that Morossa has some serious issues. It would have been fun to play her, she was headed for Shadow Dancer eventually. Unfortunately, that was yet another attempt at WotW that ended up with the DM having to bow out.

Dang it! stupid website.....GRRR! I'm getting lag:

Last try:
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (2) + 7 = 9
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (1) + 7 = 8
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (4) + 7 = 11
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17
1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

EDIT: not too bad. going to have the following:

str 8, dex 17, con 11, int 19 (after human mod), wis 9, cha 16

Forgot this earlier. Still working on the 10 minute questions. Should have them done tomorrow.

Str: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Wis: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (8) + 7 = 15
Con: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (7) + 7 = 14
Dex: 1d10 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16

Focus - Cha
Foible - Int

I have updated the Campaign Info tab to include Talingarde's Map, Gazetteer and the all important 13 Things That Are Common Knowledge in Taligarde.

This should aid everyone in doing Phase Two backgrounds.
