The weekend is over and not much has changed.

But as I made a mistake in previous lists, I am bound to correct that now.

Quotes of the day:
“So. You get handed a holy sword by an archangel, told to go fight the forces of evil, and you somehow remain an atheist. Is that what you're saying?” ― Jim Butcher, Death Masks
“How is it that whenever there's a particularly dangerous or unpleasant job that needs doing, our names are always at the top of the list?" "Because we're the best," said Fisher. "And because we're too honest for our own good. The odds are we were getting too close to something sensitive, and someone wanted us out of the way for a while." – Simon R. Green, The God Killer

Hey everyone, please read this post carefully.
We're coming up on the end of recruitment. Can everyone please check over their applications.
I'd like to make sure we've got everyone's status right. Rather than something boring like "Complete|Incomplete|Waiting|New|Withdrawing"...

If your application is ready to go (you are in the list above, you've provided a description, personality, background, answer to the social classes question, and rough mechanics for your character) please post "Reporting for duty!"

If you're waiting on something from Castor, Ophelia or Myself, please post Waiting on you, Captain! and what you're waiting on so we can get you an answer quickly.

If you're not yet fully submitted, are on the list and intend to be ready by close of recruitment, then please post "Damn paperwork!"

If you're lurking, haven't gotten on the list yet and intend to submit, please post "Anyone got a pen?"

If you've decided not to submit, but have posted something, please post "I quit!"

Damn Paperwork!

"Valignatir, respectfully reporting for duty, sir."

"Reporting for Duty, sir!"
Though I MAY refine her background a bit more IF choosen

Daria "Mia" Hearth wrote:

Sure - some tweaking once the group is determined is to be expected. I don't expect characters set in stone at this point.

"Selvara, Reporting for duty!"

Isama Zenj. Reporting for Duty. Sir!

Liberty's Edge

Kal Lomarsson reporting for duty!!

Thessirris Running Brook reporting for duty sir! *salutes and stands at attention*

"Constance De Morgan reporting for duty, sir."

There is no point to post the list at this stage, so I only say this: "I wish you all luck! May the craftiest ones win!"

Quotes of the day:
“Over the course of many encounters and many years, I have successfully developed a standard operating procedure for dealing with big, nasty monsters. Run away.” ― Jim Butcher, Blood Rites
“Form up," I murmured, because it sounded more military and tougher than saying, "You guys go first.” ― Jim Butcher, Blood Rites

(no H&F today, sadly I do not have time to search for that)

Samson stand up, shoving his desk forward with both hands.

That does it! I've had to fight Otyughs in the sewers, kissed up to obnoxious vampires who kill people because they can, and there's just too much writing! I quit! I'm out! Don't look for me, I'm gone!

He gets up and scurries out of the building.

Just not really feeling this character. Have fun folks!

Penny Hallways is reporting for duty... in her own, peculiar way:
"Hello sir Captain, what strange case have we got today and how can I be of help?"

Thirus Undeshale reporting for duty, sir! .

I'm very very late to the party, but I don't keep the closest eye on recruitment threads these days. I saw the premise behind this game and I think it sounds like an excellent change of pace! So, I'd like to throw my hat into the ring with Tino.

Background, appearance, and mannerisms are in the spoilers in his profile.

I'm not sure where this submission falls, since I'm not on the list yet, so I'll fall somewhere in the "Anyone got a pen?" or "Waiting on you, Captain!" statements. :)

"REPORTING FOR DUTY, SIR!" Firm Salute

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (18) + 2 = 20

DC 20 Sense Motive:
Diene is holding a straight face rather well for her, but still, only just.

Damn Paperwork!

"Welcome to the fold, recruit."

New submission. Nice. We still have a couple of days till the recruitment ends.

Please look at this post by our GM.

That said "Do you have a feeling you are entitled to more information at this point, recruit?" If yes, I am afraid you will have to ask some questions, otherwise none is forthcoming...

EDIT: After looking at your submission I would say you are in "Reporting for duty!" or maybe "Damn paperwork!" category now... :-)

Reporting for duty, SAH!

The desperate poor During his time at the temple, Ptahh was charged with charitable work for the destitute and poor. He is now quite comfortable with them.

the working poor He has very little interaction with this class. He isn't uncomfortable with them but rather it is an unknown to him. His curiosity over comes any reservations.

middle class citizens These were often his father's clientelle. He often enjoyed interacting with them as a child and generally is very comfortable with them.

middle class outsiders He is moderately comfortable with this class having had some interaction with it.

wealthy citizens He is very comfortable with this class although he may hold some prejuidice against those in authority positions as they may remind him of his father and brother.

wealthy outsiders As he was required by his family to be in social settings helping entertain business associates of his father's, Ptahh is comfortable dealing with this class.

nobility Ptahh has some disdain for those in authority positions. Nobility with a sense of entitlement will frustrate Ptahh. He feels anxiety in these situations and would not be comfortable dealing with most of them.

magocracy. Ptahh is quite comfortable with magic, but again authority figures of are a source of anxiety for Ptahh. His training helps him overcome these feelings in most cases.

Reporting for duty, Sir!

Thanks to Castor and Darkest Corners GM for pointing out the social class piece I missed. There were a lot of character submissions hiding that and I confess I didn't read through most of them!

As I sat around last night the character began to take shape in my mind and I made some changes this morning. Less ranged devoted and more of balance between melee and ranged for combat purposes. Still no 20 STR barbarian though! :)

The Guard often have to deal with very different social classes: the desperate poor, the working poor, middle class citizens, middle class outsiders, wealthy citizens, wealthy outsiders, the nobility and the magocracy. Which two social classes is the PC most comfortable with, and why? Which two social classes are they least comfortable with, and why?

Classes Most Comfortable With:

Desperate Poor, Working Poor: Tino grew up in a land where the poor were pressed into servitude and slavery. He has seen the injustice forced upon those considered "lower class" and the struggle that each day of existence brings to those people. He has lived among people who own only the clothes on their backs and has seen repression in many ugly forms. Those people are also the ones with whom "home and hearth" are the most important things in their lives. Family means everything to them and that is one of the base tenants of Erastil.

Classes Least Comfortable With:

Wealthy Outsiders, Wealthy Citizens: Wealth usually leads to greed and the desire for more things. People of this class generally look down upon those who are less fortunate, even going so far as to elicit servitude from the less fortunate. Wealthy people can corrupt a system of law or government quicker than oil in a well. These people generally do not appreciate the blessings set before them and their lives are often spent in the pursuit of more material gain. Wealthy Outsiders in particular can be a problem because they do not have invested feelings towards a specific society and can cause far more harm than the citizens of that society.

Caveat: Everyone is different, and to judge someone solely on their station or class is unjust. While Tino might have surface feelings towards specific classes of people he also understands that there are desperate poor who have no regard for the lives of others and wealthy citizens and outsiders who are very altruistic and giving with their own good fortune. Because Tino holds to the belief of Redemption he strongly feels that even those who have slighted their fellow man deserve a chance to make amends. He is slow to judge someone based on their upbringing or faith and always willing to try to guide them along a better path.

Some additional information I wanted to include in my submission, which I will also place in the character profile. As the character began to take shape in my mind there became a much clearer picture of how he would interact and perform in this specific setting which I wanted to post.

Envisioned Party Role: Tino is a walking lie detector. With several class abilities and spells to help highlight this, and a very good sense motive skill, he is adept at seeking out the truth in a situation. His social skills also are fairly good, which means he can aid the party in touchy situations where diplomacy is required. He is a fairly good tracker and in an environment where the party is potentially hunting down criminals he can do a lot to assist by helping find the criminal in question. He has a well rounded set of knowledge skills which are specifically tailored to help identify enemies, however he can mostly use those to aid in research, pairing with a character that has a sharper, and more trained, mind. His smattering of other skills helps him in situations where he can assist other specialists in their duties, always willing to lend a hand to further the goals of the group.

Envisioned Combat Role: Tino is best as a combatant focused on a single target. His background in hunting larger targets has left with him a specific set of skills, namely his ability to study targets and his teamwork skills that encourage flanking with party members. While he uses light, low damage, weapons, his situational modifiers (studied target, sneak attack, precise strike, merciful weapons, and bane) can lead to sizable attacks when paired up with another melee combatant. His enforcer ability also gives him some solid debuffing power when faced against an enemy vulnerable to such attacks. He has solid ranged skills though not as ranged focused as I had originally designed. Basically he can serve many roles in combat, depending on the situation.

Complications: Tino believes everyone can be saved, and every soul is worth saving. He will almost always attempt to deal non-lethal damage to opponents, and offer them quarter. This can lead to double-crossing by enemies who are able to skirt around his ability to ascertain the truth of someone's words. He has a kind soul and will sometimes easily be duped by the downtrodden and less fortunate.

I've had a great time coming up with this character and I hope those who are looking upon him will enjoy reading what I have put together. I think he'd be an excellent fit in a game such as this and a load of fun to play.

And to Castor, love the Jim Butcher quotes. Harry is the epitome of the kind of character I could see in this setting!

"Reporting for duty, Sir!"

Due to the time spent reading these posts, I have been neglecting reading The Heroes. But yesterday I finally finished it and have to say: ******* brilliant! It reminds me a lot of the Battle of Gettysburg (and even one scene from Dances with Wolves) and it is Abercrombie… I recommend it, as well as all other books in the series.
Now I can return to H&F books and re-read them. I started with book 4, as the first three I remember quite well (or much better than the second three). At least this gives me a chance to find some quotes.

This time around, we have a new way of listing the recruits. If you are not somewhere on the list and you still wish to participate, report in immediately!

As always: I wish you all luck! May the craziest ones win!

Quotes of the day:
“Heroism doesn't pay very well. I try to be cold-blooded and money-oriented, but I keep screwing it up.” ― Jim Butcher, Dead Beat
“… All right, end of briefing. Get out of here. And someone wake up Hawk.” – Simon R. Green, Wolf in the Fold
“It was also a clearing house for information, gossip, and rumor, all for sale on a sliding scale that started at expensive and rose quickly to extortionate. Hawk and Fisher looked in from time to time to pick up the latest information, and never paid a penny. Instead, they let their informants live and promised not to set fire to the building on the way out.” – Simon R. Green, Wolf in the Fold

Otino Okoye wrote:

That might be the reason why this campaign was inspired by DF (among others) :-)

So here is a bonus quote:

"Life is a journey. Time is a river. The door is ajar" ― Jim Butcher, Dead Beat

"Psssh, strength 20 barbarian? Try strength 22 Barbarian... I be rocking these guns." Kiss kiss.

"I quit!"

I got swamped, didn't have time to really submit anything. Have fun, everyone!

Alright. 9:45 on the 23rd here. I'm giving a formal 24 hour call until end of recruitment, then the committee will make a decision.

Definitely excited!

Excited as well...even if I feel all insecure now. So many people auditing for this guard job-and not ONE of them my size -_- best of luck to everybody I guess...

Shadow Lodge

Glad to see everyone checking in, hopefully that means the posting rate in game will be good.

There are quite a few good apps. I was pretty confident with mine, but looking again, gunslinger may not have been the most appropriate choice for a game like this. Hopefully it doesn't affect my chances too much. *crossing my fingers*

Classes Most Comfortable With:

Desperate Poor, Working Poor: Balthazar identifies most with these folks because he has been there. He knows what it is to struggle and hope for better. It's day to day for them, and he's hoping that he will be able to do something about that.

Classes Least Comfortable With:

Wealthy Outsiders, Wealthy Citizens: In Balthazar's experience these people tend overall to only be concerned about bringing in more wealth no matter what. He does want to be able to be one of them, just so he can help those of lesser station.

Reporting for Duty!

Liberty's Edge

I had hoped the combination of a tracker and rogue would be a good mesh, but I have seen some really interesting combinations posted here...not to mention some amazing backgrounds. Best of luck to everyone.

"Hmm..."

Ophelia 'Springs' Hale wrote:

"Hmm..."

*stands still while being closely observed by the clockwork creature, sneakily taking a curious look at it herself*

Before she can stop herself, muttering "Fascinating...", inmediately realizing her blunder, her face reddens, her stance tenses up. "I'm sorry, Ma'am"

The dark-skinned man's normally obvious aversion to being the subject of such attention and examination was hidden well by his sheer amazement of such a being as the one that stood before him. While it was understood that Nex was a place where the fantastic was almost a common sight, the existence of the moving construct of brass and copper flew against everything he knew and understood to be true in the world. Eyes wide with wonder he maintained a steady pose, trying not to gawk too much at the being as it looked him over closely. He spoke not a word, remaining at steady attention and everting his stare any time the creature moved to meet his gaze.

What other wonders might this city hold? Surely I have chosen well!

As Ophelia circles around Penny, Penny starts circling around Ophelia as well. "Oh, this is intriguing indeed! I don't see any ancestor's aura around you, my dear. Whose child are you?" Her tone is kind and respectful, but clearly bursting with curiosity.

Isama sticks her hand out and smiles at the clockwork woman Name's Isama. Pleased to meetcha

As Castor flips to another page a bird flies in through an opened window.

"Mastermaster, theyareselectingreinforcementsforthissquadatGuardCentral" the bird chirrups quickly.

"Calm down, Squeeky. Are they any good?"

"Ihavettastedthemmaster. ShouldI?"

"Not really." Castor chuckles. "Good boy, Squeeky"He offers the bird a treat. "Now fly back and find out as much about them as you can. And be careful, you know some of the Guards do not like you poking around."

As the bird flyes away Castor returns to his book. Should I be worried or thrilled? We will see...

Quotes of the day:
“Molly was arrested. Possession.” I blinked at him. “She was possessed?” ― Jim Butcher, Proven Guilty
"Good thinking," said Hawk. "I've always admired your essentially sneaky and devious nature." "You say the nicest things," said Fisher. – Simon R. Green, Wolf in the Fold

Liberty's Edge

Kal eyed the mechanical 'woman' as she inspected the other candidates. He had seen her around the offices of the guard before, but this was the first time he had any interaction with her.
He held himself at attention, and tried not to fidget as she examined him. Once she has moved on, he lets out a little sigh and relaxed ever so slightly.
"Hope I passed her inspection! I wonder if any of the other members of the "special units" squad will be inspecting us?"

"Oooh, do these come standard issue in the special units?" Diene grabs onto the poking stick gently after it touches her, bringing it up to eye level, before gazing just above it at Ophelia.

She then flicked the poking stick away before moving on quickly, as though not desiring to wait to hear the answer. Instead she headed to Otino.

"Hey, got a name? Mine's Diene." Her usual sly smile was on full display, making her seem like she was up to something, which she probably was.

Alright. I declare recruitment closed.

The committee will meet to discuss applications, and get back to you after the weekend.

Diene wrote:
"Hey, got a name? Mine's Diene." Her usual sly smile was on full display, making her seem like she was up to something, which she probably was.

Disarmed briefly by the sudden attention from the striking half-elf, the dark skinned man tried to hide a bit of a smile as he was flattered at the notice. Smoothing his green cotton tabard a bit he said, "Tino m'lady, at your service" and followed the statement with the slightest of bows, a formal acknowledgement of her attention. "And may I add that your choice in colors seems to suit you well," he added, admiring the boldness in which she displayed her choice of garb. He could only wonder what the woman might be capable of, as the physical way she carried herself displayed that there was far more than met the eye with this one. Coupled with her attitude it was obvious that she was one not to be overly concerned with any particular danger that might come her way. The simple fact that she carried no visible weapon only highlighted that observation.

@Diene - Loved the background and character story by the way. Great stuff! :)

Valignatir stood off to one side of the room, awaiting his turn to be examined and interviewed, if necessary.

He wore his Hellknight full plate, easily recognize able to any who knew, with his signifiers mask on a nearby table.
His cloak was a crimson red, with black trimming, and a heavy mace hung at his side.
One hand held a rolled-up scroll, his letter of introduction and recommendation from the leaders of his Order.

He said nothing, but saw everything.

Now that they've been left alone to await the decision of the Guard superiors Isama looks over at the conversation happening between Diene and Tino. You've got a lot of Mwangi in your accent Tino. You from there? Always nice to meet someone else from the jungle outside of it.

Just for the sake of completeness I present the final list of candidates.

Please let me know if there is any mistake there. Although I hope after so many repetitions I got it right.

I do wish you all a nice weekend.

Final list of candidates:

player bigrig107 / character: Valignatir - Human Cleric of Asmodeus 5 (crusader)
player MordredofFairy / character: Daria "Mia" Hearth - Halfling Bard(Archeologist) 5

For the last time: I wish you all luck! May the craziest ones win!

Quotes of the day:
“I hate it when the real world ignores a perfectly logical, rational assumption.” ― Jim Butcher, White Night
"Let's be reasonable about this." "Sorry," said Hawk, without looking round. "I'm only reasonable at weekends. And Fisher doesn't believe in being reasonable. Says it's bad for her image." – Simon R. Green, Guard Against Dishonor

Does Role-playing here help our cause in any way?

Unless you count having a good feeling about it and trying to get the personalities of your characters right, which could be helpful if you get chosen, than the answer is: no, not in the least...

But you are welcomed to it, if you want to.

Best of luck to all, I guess.

After seeing the shopping list in discussion, I found my hope diminishing, but I can still hope, I guess. Regardless, I already want to congratulate those who get choosen (personally dislike congratulating after it's published as when I was hopeful myself it will usually not be a truly honest congratulation at that time)

Daria "Mia" Hearth wrote:

I would not read too much into that, since I have yet to give all our applicants a good look over. I didn't know that one of them brought a 'look trough walls' thingy with them, so lets just chalk that up to 'great minds think alike!' instead : )
