DM Torillan's Tales of Midgard

Game Master Torillan

A PbP set in Kobold Press' Midgard Campaign setting.

1 to 50 of 122 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

Since my face-to-face group is on something of a hiatus till next year, I'm checking to see if there is any interest in a PbP set in Midgard. I've been absorbing the setting book and I like what I see. We'd start with the Old Margreve adventures.

I'm looking for 4 or 5 players for a relaxed pbp...by that I mean ability to post 4+ times a week. Yes that means a slower pace, but no one needs to post daily.

Right now this is just an interest check, not character submissions. Most likely I'll stick to PFRPG Core, APG, UM, UC, maybe some races from ARG. From the Kobold Press side, the CS book, Player's Guides (those currently out), and expanded spell-less ranger. More may be possible.

Thanks for listening.

Interested for sure. Midgard sound...different. I like it, so consider my interest expressed ;-)

Lantern Lodge

Very interested. I love Midgard and it would be great to see a Midgard PbP.

It has a more "Old school" feel to it, along with Old World tropes.

Thanks for the interest (fast too!).

Interested.

Dark Archive

Interested, I just got most of the Midgard Library really interested in the setting.

I'm interested in doing a PBP

Interested, definitely!

Well, this looks like a go. I work in Emergency Medicine, so bear with me this weekend, but I will post specifics soon. Once I do, you can post a character concept. If you have a complete character, post it, and we can tweak background later.

Thanks again for the interest!

Lantern Lodge

Great, there is a Margreve bloodline in the Tales of the Old Margreve that seems very appropriate. Would you be open to that or should I stick to something closer to core? I could post the details if that helps. I'm considering a couple other concepts too.

Edit: There are some nice background traits for Margreve characters in there too if you allow traits. Very flavorful.

Thats fine. Midgard specific things will be allowed.

Traits will be allowed, I just need to decide how many.

A definite will be no other 3rd party stuff. Just Paizo and Kobold stuff. I want to avoid bloat. I not at my library at the moment (Thanksgiving and all), but I hope to have a list of allowables by tomorrow.

DM Torillan:

Would you allow an exiled Alseid (Race from Midgard bestiary)?

Link to stats - though the Midgard Bestiary has a full rundown on the modifiers for a PC character (I can PM if you don't have the bestiary).

I do have the bestiary, so I'll give it a closer look when I get back gome tonite. It SEEMS reasonable, but give me a bit before final deciscion. And I'd love to see a REALLY GOOD backstory for a character like that! Color me intrigued!

Dark Archive

Just a Couple Questions, what point system for stats, also can I use the Shadow Sworn from the Players guide to the Crossroads and are all races from the Midgard Campaign book allowed.

Pathfinder Lost Omens Subscriber

Interest here as well. I love me some Midgard.

Consider me interested!

Are kobolds a playable race? What is their place in Midgard exactly? I only know a little about the campaign setting so I apologize. It mentions them in the Midgard preview section, but that's about it.

Backstory I can do, I've got a general idea and will cement it down mentally over the weekend.

Ultimately its up to DM Torillan, but kobolds are commonly a playable race in Midgard and there is a sizable kobold ghetto in Zobeck, the largest city near the Old Margreve. They are often miners and tinkerers.

I think I'll pass on applying. I''m trying to get into two other games that I'm really interested in and I'd like to focus on them.

Read quite a lots of reviews of Midgard, and I can tell you - I love it guys! This is really a setting with a very nice theme. I read Midnight and Eberron previously and did not like them, but Midgard just seemed to "click".

Maybe it's because I'm a European/Slav (since they used quite a lots of euro-folklore), I don't know, but I really liked it. Now all I have to do is chase a guy who knows a guy who seems to have a dead-tree book, so I can read on it a bit. But from what I saw until now, I would really love to play in Midgard.

Dotting.

I have two ideas for characters, and they're both a little strange.

First, I'd love to try playing a Savant, a class that was in Kobold Quarterly 18. Any chance you'd allow that?

If not, then going along with the "Old School" theme, I was thinking maybe an Oracle who uses Words of Power?

If neither of those are ok, then I can certainly come up with something else. Just thought I'd throw them out there.

Dark Archive

I am interest in this as well, especially since I am of South Slav/Wallachian ancestry. :)

I would like to play Spell-less Ranger with both of its archetypes applied. Do you plan to use point-buy or rolling for attributes?

If alseid is permitted, my thoughts are aligning along a black-blooded oracle of wood.

Dark Archive

I'm thinking of a character raised by werewolf berserkers in the far North. Either human or troll-kin.

Lantern Lodge

I'm thinking human sorceress with the Margreve bloodline and probably a dryad back someplace in the family heritage. Also leaning toward having her from a small village or perhaps one of the inns.

Hey guys, sorry for the silence. Result of extra sleep because of a very busy couple of days in the ER.

Anyhoo, Let me give you the specifics on character creation that I've settled on.

Pretty much (since its their world) anything published by Kobold Press, either from sourcebooks or KQ, so for example, Yes, alseids are OK, and so is the savant class (both look pretty neat, for the record!)

As for Paizo, I'd like to keep it somewhat simple, so here is my list (if you have any questions or would like to use something else from them, just let me know and I'll look into it. If it seems appropriate for your character, I'll most likely allow it):

Core book, APG, UM, UC, and UE.

I'd like to avoid using the ARG for now, as the Kobold Press stuff has some new choices. If you are desperate to play a race from the ARG, let me know.

Now, here is how to build your PCs:

1) 15-Point Buy, 1st Level.
2) Choose two traits.
3) Any non-evil alignments.
4) Max HP at first level, average plus Con bonus after that.

5) Average starting gold for your class.

For background, you will be arriving in the village of Levoca for some reason (its on the eastern edge of the Margreve forest), most likely heading to the city of Zobeck.

I'll be choosing five characters, and previous friendships among them are encouraged for better RPing.

Good luck, and questions are always welcome!! (Especially if I missed something obvious!)

Dark Archive

I have to bow out, I'm afraid. The character I envisioned would not be possible with 15 point-buy. Good luck with the game. :)

Sorry to hear. I do understand. I did consider 20 pt buy, but ultimately chose 15 so I could avoid too much tweaking. I run a 20 pt buy in RL, and some encounters are too easy for them.

I think 15 pt helps build good teamwork, at least how I see it.

Thanks again for considering, and I hope you change your mind.

Need to work on backstory, a language, and equipment, but here is my first pass at Gierdré.

Margreve Dreamer Your vivid dreams tap into the great numinous forces of the Margreve. Your sleep is filled with clinging nightmares of the ancient world, the changing seasons, and the forest’s depths. Margreve Dweller You were raised under the boughs of the Old Margreve, a veiled place the light of the sun rarely penetrates. Witches’ Hex (Sp) (7/day) – You can bestow a minor curse on a target with a melee touch attack. In either case, the condition persists for a number of rounds equal to ½ your sorcerer level (1 round). Multiple touches do not stack but add to the duration. I have no problem with 15 pt. buy, but I do have an issue that I can not find Midgard CS book, thus hampering my knowledge of the setting severely. I am afraid that it would "affect" my potential gaming quite a lot, since it seems such a rich setting. What do you think?

Well, you can download the free preview. It does have a basic overview. You can find it here at Paizo or Kobold Press.

But honestly, I won't be requiring the CS book to play. We'll technically be exploring Midgard as a group. The goal is fun!

My greatest weakness is also a lack of knowledge regarding the setting. Are there any free resources to be found?
Also, I have a concept for a Synthesist Summoner, basically a Halfling Body-Slave who encountered a 'super-suit' & escaped his servitude. How well would this fit your game, if at all?

edit: thanks for the info regarding the free preview, I will check it out.

I have already downloaded free preview and read it 2-3 times. They did a great job with it, it just leaves you craving for more. It gives a few hints, and poses quite a lots of good questions. The opening stories are OK, if a bit over-the-top for my taste.

Anyway, I'd like to play either a ranger (this alt), or even better a barbarian (never, ever played one). if I decide to create a barbarian, from where would he be hailing? And what of this Perun? I like that, in ancient Slav legends it was a kind of an overgod, similar to Zeus. Can I find some more info on him somewhere? What gods, or totems barbarians pray to, if any?

Deirdre and Gierdre :) - you could be sisters!

DM Torillan - the only choice that I would beseech from outside the sources you named would be the Black Blooded Curse from Inner Sea Magic. Link

Though if that isn't allowed, then the backstory still works with the wasting curse. I should have my guy up in a day or two.

Lantern Lodge

Hah, yeah and they definitely have a lack of "street sense" in common. I didn't take Wisdom below 10, but definitely saw her as weak in the common sense department compared to other areas.

Might be good to start considering ties since DM Torillan would like to see us tied together at the start. I could definitely see Gierdré knowing an Alseid and she might know a bandit like Deirdre too.

Aran - I think you have a couple logical choices. One is being from the Northlands. The other is being from the Rothenian Plains. Either would be appropriate and not too far from the Margreve.

Grey - I'll leave that one to DM Torillan to make a call on, but that's going to be an odd character for Midgard. Maybe you could do something with an unusual gearforged character or someone who had a horrible accident (or fantastic find) in the Wastes.

I looked at it, and I'm OK with it. Just know that the Margreve might not like it too much! ;-)

Interest!

I don't think that concept is a good fit for Midgard. It does sound cool, but I think you might want to invest in another option.

K read the preview and the product page at Kobold Press...um minotaur PCs and Baba Yaga?....count me interested!!! :)

Only hesitation is the same mentioned by some others, my unfamiliarity with the setting.

That said, are the minotaur PC option available? If so could you post the mechanics so I could make an informed decision ?

Thanks

Thanks for the response. Right at the moment, I am more looking for a game that concept will work in than just looking for a game. That said, this does sound like fun & I hope you all enjoy yourselves!

Ninja'd!! Thanks for posting the stats, LoF.

And yes, minotaurs are allowed!

Dark Archive

I am interested, just need to decide what to toss out for consideration.

Justin Sluder wrote:

No worries. You have thru at least Dec. 1 (Saturday).

Would a paladin of Khors from the Order of the Undying Sun be at odds with your campaign? I have Tales of the Margreve, but I haven't read through it in depth, so I would be going in effectively blind if you go with my character.

Dark Archive

Would you allow the human feats from the ARG? Specifically, Fast Learner and Improvisation?
