DM Sothal |
Big Ern: I only had Queslin walked down to the lower level, as he didn't explain himself I let Michael stay with the rest of you up in the breedery. Now that Agerron follows though...
Xanda: Okay. You are going to need 2 more minutes to make do with what you can gather.
What's the weight of a small creature? 35lbs.?
How's your encumbrance then?
Queslin: The talking part is a problem, as none of you speak undercommon, and that's the only language they speak. But Queslin doesn't know that.
Even though Queslin calls out to the Mites, he gets no intelligible spoken answer in return. Instead a single arrow flies out from in between two planks of the table, coming to stick in the ground right in front of the elf.
In the meantime Agerron and Michael make their way down to Queslin.
DM Sothal |
Even though Queslin has but a really small sliver of space to attack through, he hits the Mite behind the table square. A cry of pain comes from behind, then the table bursts into splinters as a giant centipede crashes it.
Map
Behind the now defunct baricade more than a dozen Mites await the intruders of their lair, weapons raised, yelling in anger, calling out in an not understandable language.
In between and behind them, giant centipedes can be seen, and also another, strange sort of spider is being riden by a Mite in the back of the chamber.

Majet and Xanda are in the torture chamber. Xanda needs another minute to finish her Kobold harness. The two of you hear that there is something going on in the other chamber, on the other side of the chasm.
Agerron doesn't take a hearts beat of time to adjust to the situation, lunging out with his greatsword, trying to cut the giant vermins head off, but misses, just barely, his sword having got tangled in one of the roots hanging from the ceiling.
Branomonrik doesn't have space to attack one of the little creatures, so instead he calls out a small prayer to guide Queslins attack. (Guidance)
The Mites run in to close the gap cut with Queslin's blade, attacking with daggers in mass. Only one of those attacks hits the elf, causing a bigger scratch 1hp.

Thanks for going for me, I seem to have a dying ethernet port..sigh..machines hate me
Unable to get to the enemy Branomonrik calls upon his faith to bolster his allies. Forward Queslin ! Bring forth order of holy law, into this land of savages. May Adabar guide you with righteous power to carry forth his holy plan!"
Queslin is granted a +2 morale bonus on attack rolls, skill checks, ability checks, and saving throws for 1 round
DM Sothal |
Queslin: Your attack bonus is probably wrong. Normal +4, +1 competence (from guidance), -2 for the low ceiling so I get a total of +3, not +6.
Big Ern: The low ceiling hinders you in throwing the bomb over your comrades. You are in range of the giant centipede so I'm changing your attack to melee.
Branomonrik: Next round, inspiring words got it.
Queslin attack against one of the many Mites is hindered by the low ceiling, just as Agerron's before.
Michael is unable to get close to the enemies, so he readies himself to step up if any of his comrades might fall.
Big Ern hacks with his battleaxe at the giant centipede, but the vermin is fast enough to dodge the attack, hissing through the poisonous mandibles.
Now the vermin itself attacks, trying to close it's fangs around Agerron's feet but the scale mail protects the human.

Sorry for my faulty math. I forgot about the -2 and have no idea where the +1 came from. Anyway, on to round 2.
Queslin swipes at another mite.
Longsword: to hit 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Longsword: damage 1d8 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4
He steps into that square if it is now unoccupied.
DM Sothal |
Agerron swings his greatsword again at the centipede:
greatsword 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 5 - 2 = 22 damage 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 1) + 7 = 13
confirmation roll 1d20 + 5 - 2 ⇒ (8) + 5 - 2 = 11 damage 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (6, 5) + 7 = 18
This time he hits the vermin, slicing it open along it's side, spilling the innards on the ground.
He takes the opportunity to step foreward, coming closer to the Mites behind the centipede.
Branomonrik calls out inspirational words, bolstering Queslin with noble morale.
The Mites in the 'front row' attack with their daggers, pointing them at Agerron and Queslin.
Mite1 against Queslin 1d20 ⇒ 4 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Mite2 against Queslin 1d20 ⇒ 2 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Mite3 against Agerron 1d20 ⇒ 12 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Mite4 against Agerron 1d20 ⇒ 17 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Only one of the four Mites hits, but he does but a larger scratch, drawing blood 1hp, non-lethal damage.
In the back, some Mites drag their previously hurt and now unconscious comrad futher to the back of the room, while some others focus on fixing Agerron with their gazes, bulging their eyes hideously open.
doom twice on Agerron, DC10 or become shaken
Queslin's swing of the longsword misses it's target, while Michael is still unable to do much else but wait for an oppening.

Cleave sure would be nice, right now ...
Agerron chops at a mite, not caring which.
attack 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (19) + 3 = 22
damage 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (2, 2) + 7 = 11
confirm 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
damage 2d6 + 7 ⇒ (5, 1) + 7 = 13
DM Sothal |
Big Ern waits for a clearing to throw his bomb through the space between Queslin and Agerron and their opponents, aiming for a clogging of bodies in ranks further in the back of the chamber. Getting the shot timed just right he manages to catch 7 of the Mites in the blast of the bomb due to them pressing close to one another.
Close to the half of them are able to dodge the brunt of the explosion, but 4 of the 7 fall to the floor.
The humansized vermins in the back of the room are unable to come any closer to the group, with the Mites in their way.
Agerron chops at the nearest Mite, leaving it as a mass of unrecognizeable flesh and bones. He takes the position of the fallen Mite to make space for Michael, who just waited for that to happen.
Branomonrik's spell makes most of the Mites actually shake a bit.
Agerron is a bit more exposed to the attacks of the Mites, standing in their midst, so the small fey focus on him, though two Mites try their luck with the elf as well.
Mite1 against Queslin 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
confirmation roll 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (14) - 1 = 13 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Mite2 against Queslin 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (17) - 1 = 16 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Mite4 against Agerron 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 2 = 16 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Mite8 against Agerron 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (8) - 1 = 7 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Mite10 against Agerron 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (15) - 1 = 14 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Mite11 against Agerron 1d20 ⇒ 7 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
One of the Mites is lucky to hit Queslin 1hp, while from the four Mites attacking Agerron only one draws blood 2hp.

"Ah, I'm not dead yet. I need the movement anyway. I'm just exthauthted from the trip to get here. I had thome mileth to cover after all.
But you may be right, I need to retht when we are back at the old fort." Father Kavken answers to Devlin, reaching out for the human's arm to steady himself on the way back.
------------------------------------
Queslin's attack finally hits a Mite and even it's hard leathery skin doesn't protect it. The Mite falls to the ground, unconscious, blood seeping from the wound.
Big Ern prepares another bomb to throw, this time through the space between Agerron and Michael, to the east:
throw bomb at grid intersection 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (9) + 4 = 13, 4 pts splash damage (Ref DC 13 for 1/2)
All Mites around the center of explosion fall to the ground, leaving the group with 5 less to deal with.
Now, after Queslin stepped up in the place of the fallen Mite, he is close to the second centipede, which uses the moment to attack:
bite 1d20 ⇒ 13 damage 1d6 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
The elf is nimble enough to get away from the dripping mandibles before they close around his leg.

The old man replies to Devlin's inquiry: "Oh, well... I do not know him that much. I mainly stay here while he is out in the lands with you and the rest of the group.
I have no need for Taras to stay here with me, so you may take him with you, if you like.
I trust him.
I believe that you will not have a problem with Taras accompanying you. From what I talked with him, he does not want to get back to the bandits ravaging the lands to the south. He does his best to help the Lady Svetlana when he is here, trying to get on Lord Oleg's good side as hard as he can.
He has turned for the better, I must say.
But, as I said before, I do not know him that much."
----------------------------
Agerron's swing is not properly aimed at the small creature, who, though badly hurt, easily steps aside the arc of the huge blade.
Michael steps around the human, taking on the same Mite Agerron just missed:
Battleaxe 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 2 = 17 damage 1d8 + 6 ⇒ (6) + 6 = 12
From his previous step out of balance, the Mite practically runs in the blade of Michaels weapon, coughing blood and falling to the ground thereafter.

DM Sothal |
Whilst Branomonrik bolsters the morale of Agerron with his words and divine power, the Mites are out to get back at Queslin and Agerron. The ones up close try to hit them with their tiny blades, while some of those further behind focus on them with their eyes buldging open:
Mite1 against Queslin 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (7) - 1 = 6 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
Mite12 against Queslin 1d20 ⇒ 14 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Mite14 against Agerron 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (19) - 1 = 18 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (1) - 1 = 0
confirmation roll 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (9) - 1 = 8 damage 1d3 - 1 ⇒ (2) - 1 = 1
Again only one of the Mites is able to hit an opponent, Agerron, causing but a bruise with his meager strength 1hp non-lethal.
doom twice on Agerron, Will DC10 or become shaken,
doom once on Queslin, Will DC10 or become shaken
Queslin's sword finds his way in between two scales of the giant centipede, bringing it to fall to the ground, bleeding.
The elf quickly steps in its place, making room for Big Ern to close in on the Mites, drawing his battleaxe along the way.
The enormous humans axe easily finds the nearest Mite, causing it to collaps to the floor.
Meanwhile, in the torture chamber of the Mite Lair, Xanda and Majet finish the work on Xanda's harness to carry Kardok. That leaves them with some options:
- try to cross the chasm and get to the group fighting the Mites, or
- walk to the rest of the explorers using the long way up, throught the workshop, the entry tunnels, the breedery and down to the others, or
- make their way to the exit of the lair...

Steping close to the chasm you notice the handholds in the ceiling leading over the open space. They are obviously fabricated from roots, knotted to make it easy to cross the chasm.
While Majet starts grabbing at them, Xanda looks after the gnome swinging from one such loop to the next, when suddenly one of them gives way, tearing loose from the ceiling.
Majet: Ref DC12 or take falling damage to the bottom of the chasm 40ft. below.
DM Sothal |
Arriving savely on the other side of the chasm, Majet looks back to the trapped handholds, but can't say for certain if any more of them are false and dangerous. For the gnome it is just as likely she grabbed the only false loop.
Xanda looks at the knotted roots as well, suspecting some of them to probably tear loose, but would need to look at them for some time to be sure.
Xanda |
For a moment Xanda's heart is in her mouth as the plucky Gnome drops out of sight into the yawning chasm. Then, upon seeing Majet scrambling up again, Xanda breaths a sigh of relief. At Majet's call she smiles and replies,
Xanda nods, "Except for that one..." She points out with a wink. ;)
Then reaches up and begins swinging across herself.
