DM Papa.DRB - Rise of the Runelords 2 (Inactive)

Game Master Papa-DRB

1 to 50 of 53 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | next > last >>

I am taking over a Rise of the Runelords campaign, and we need a replacement character. Here is a LINK to the campaign. Eventually Paizo will put me as the GM for it.

Currently there is a:
Fighter (going Paladin at some point)
Oracle
Witch
Bard (archeologist)

The group needs another front line character; Paladin, Fighter, Ranger, Barbarian.

Original character creation guidelines - updated

- 2nd Level
- 20 Point Buy
- 500 gp. No magic
- Max HP all levels
- Races: CRB only.
- 2 Traits + 1 Campaign Trait. No drawbacks.
- Alignment: Good or LN, N. No CN or Evil.

I would like to have a few characters to choose from by Monday 8 May.

Just dotting for now. This character was created for Iron Gods, so his backstory will need to change--and that might change his personality and mechanics as well.

Old Backstory:
The building with the animals was warm and dry. Plus, the boy liked the animals, and they liked him. He had to flee when big people came, but that was the same everywhere. One day, a short, hairy man caught the boy asleep and beat him up.

The boy woke up in a different building, with metal around his ankle. He could still smell the animals, but also something else, something hot. The boy worked that day until he bled everywhere. He worked that day until he couldn't move to go to the bathroom. The short, hairy man beat him for going to the bathroom on himself. "Clean that up, Churm!" But then the man gave him a bowl of food. That tiny bowl was the most food the boy had ever seen before.

The boy worked everyday until he could barely crawl to his pallet, but every night, the short, hairy man gave the boy a bowl of food. "See Churm, Droskar feeds those who work hard." Years passed like this, every day filled with the same hard work, beatings and bowl of food.

Eventually, the boy learned that Churm was his name, but not that it meant "child human" in Dwarven. He learned that Droskar was not the blacksmith's name, but the name of his god. And he learned to work in the forge; but most importantly, he learned that hard work brought food, a dry bed and less beatings. Churm worked hard, and sometimes he found ways to play, too.

Churm found a loose tile in the roof, but until he learned to climb up there safely, he would fall and hurt himself. And when he couldn't explain the bruises to his master, he would take a beating for those bruises. But when Churm did make the climb safely, he could get to the stable next door. Some of the horses even remembered him, and he remembered them all.

As time passed, the dwarf spent more and more time drinking and sleeping--Churm now knew that the short, hairy man was a dwarf--giving Churm more time to spend with the animals, and even some time to watch men fight each other in front of the stable. In his play, he mimed their movements. He even learned how to avoid some of the dwarf's blows, but he also learned not to dodge too many blows, or the dwarf would use his hammer.

One day, Churm found a small piece of noqual in one of the stalls. He knew it belonged to somebody, it was very rare; but he also knew that nobody else knew he came to the stable. Churm stole the nugget of noqual, and he made a tiny dagger out of it. It was his!

That day, Churm learned that he could have things of his own. It was only a matter of time until he realized he could have a life of his own, too. On that day, he stole some weapons and armor from the dwarf, and ran far away. For a long time, he stayed away from cities, afraid of being caught. He practiced the things he had seen from the men in front of the stable. He ate the plants that didn't make him sick and the few, small animals he could catch. He became lonely. And he heard Droskar telling him to work harder.

Today, Churm decided to enter a city. He could find work in a city. And maybe he could find people to talk with him and smile at him, like the men in front of the stable did with each other.

so something melee support is? What is your Bard and Oracle styles of play

Will work on getting this character de-leveled to 2. He's a dex build Ranger originally designed to be a crossbnow specialist but could easily re-tool for melee if needed.

Background:
Reynard was born to deal with monsters. At the age of 10 Reynard was struck with the oddity of the woman whose hut stood next to his father’s. Why did no one else see the dark things that crept over her house? Why did she look old occasionally, but only for a second?
Still no one believed him, so determined and courageous, the boy crept into the sweat lodge one feasting night and stood up, asking why a witch was allowed to live in the village. Was she good then?

That night young Reynard was on the receiving end of a merciless beating from his father, for causing such embarrassment. It was only a few days later, when one of the tribe’s Bards followed up on the boy’s claim, more out of thoroughness than an actual belief of the child, did it become clear that the boy had a gift for seeing through veils. A Hag had manipulated the minds of those living near, hiding in plain sight.

From that day began Reynard’s training in the arts of hunting and tracking, monsters.

Recent rumors of monstrous humanoid activity have drawn him to Sandpoint where he has decided to attend an inventor's convention, intent on upgrading his weapons.

Frontline?

Looks like you have a full Martal, I'd actually apply something Semi-melee... How about a Brawler? I'm thinking of making an Oread for this. But then it's core book only so I've lost my interest with that one thing

All done and retooled. Went Two Weapon fighting ranger

Raltus wrote:

Bard is an archeologist archetype so he is knowledge and lock picker type, and does not have the bard performance abilities. He stays in the back and uses spells and crossbow.

edit: With a 9 strength, he is bad at melee also.... heh

Oracle, from players post, is a healer and support. She is bad at melee. As she levels I will get some of the important buffs, some damage spells, and the summon spells. Channeling is a big thing. I do not plan to multi class

Forgot to include in the creation guidelines, that none of the hybrid classes were allowed in the original recruitment so none here either, which leaves out the Advanced Class Guide. Also, no ninja, summoner, samurai, or gunslinger, so to keep things equal, none of those in this round also.

Ok so Unchained Rogue is allowed?

Raltus wrote:

I really would rather not have a non-martial character. These guys really only have one front line character, the fighter, and the rest hang back, so another front liner is needed.

So I'm thinking about a Shoanti switch-hitter Ranger specializing in the earthbreaker.
Just a quick question, what about background skills?

While I personally love background skills, none of the original folk have background skills, so unfortunately no.

Dotting with Logar Brazenbrew, a devout cleric of Cayden Cailean. Built around two weapon fighting with a flail and a tankard, this character is more about flavour than optimization. Background will be on his character sheet soon.

Dotting. planning on a CG barbarian or bloodrager, not sure which yet.

Presenting Grishnak Strongaxe, Elemental Air Bloodrager. Stats are done, working on a backstory now.

Final touches done. Reynard Varvanyuk. Dex specializing Two weapon fighter, who can also handle ranged combat as well as melee and brings tracking/survival to the table.

BeastMasterFTW wrote:

Apologies. Wish I had seen this sooner, as it would have saved you some work. Look 6 posts above yours. Bloodrager is a hybrid class and not allowed.

-- david

Drat. Oh well, it shouldn't be hard to switch to barbarian

My bad on the background skills. I looked at the one character that did not break them out. *sigh*

So yes, Background Skills are ok.

-- david

There, now converted to barbarian. I tried to build my character as more than a big dumb barbarian, and sacraficed a bit of effectivness for that, but meh. also just realize skills are off, need to go fix that

Hi Papa, would Unchained Monk be an acceptable option?

There are several submissions that look good, and a couple more that when finished should look good also.

Therefore submission deadline is Monday, 8 May at 1700 (Eastern US). I have a part time job on Monday afternoons and will get home soon after that. A decision will be announced Tuesday morning.

You ruled out the classes from the Advanced Class guide, but what about the archetypes? I've got an idea for a Half-Elven Daring Champion Cavalier I'd like to submit, if possible.

This AP is bad for mounts. However, if I read correctly this archetype gets rid of mount for weapon finesse, so it should be ok.

-- david

Alright! It took me a while (especially with Paizo gobbling up my first attempt), but Logar's appearance, personality and background should now be up for your review and consideration.

List of characters submitted. I think that I got them all, but if I missed anyone, please let me know.

Bump Unchained Monk

Reynard Varvanyuk Ranger

Note to all who submitted a character.

You came to Sandpoint, have met the Sheriff, looking for work / adventure. He directed you to a group that is currently at the Rusty Dragon Inn who is doing some work for him and maybe you could join them.

-- david

The group currently went underground to some tunnels, and have not done anything yet, so I am retconning them back to the Inn. Only looses about six posts.
.
Note to new folks, and current group. If Paizo does not change the game over to me by Tuesday morning, I will open a new discussion and gameplay thread, leaving pointers as the last post in those two threads directing folks to the new threads. I will pick up the "meeting" at the Inn there.

I'm just here to say that Papa/David is a good GM! He took over a RotRL game for us as well. Good luck to the applicants and to the group!

One more quick question before I submit my character, Favored Class bonus is a thing for these submissions, correct?

Yes.

Alright, here is my Daring Champion Cavalier, Nimreass Avundarod

He's a bit bare bones at the moment, but I'm running out of time before work. I'm happy with his stats and appearance but I'll be expanding on his background and goals once I get home tonight, citing relevant books, pages, and anything else that I need to for him.

Darn it... already in a great RotRL campaign, so no submission from me.

I say darn it because I like Papa's style and totally would apply otherwise.

Luck all!

I am liking that there have been two people to stop by and say they like DM Papa's storytelling.

I am the oracle in the group and I look forward to getting to play with one of youll

Hello, I would like to submit Aviel for consideration

About this submission:

I built this character for another RotRL game that didn't get much past the goblins and would look forward to picking up where I left off. I have linked to the original background (Its pretty long but the gm had high expectations for backgrounds). I can change anything that needs to be altered to fit the current setting.

Here is my submission. Unchained Barb. - Invuln. rager

Boonom is generally a good-natured brute.

Backstory:

Appearance:
Boonom was use to roaming the wilds of Kellids battling orcs and less hospitable creatures. He bears many scars from various combats and the harsh environment he suffered in Kellid. He carries a very large sword that has seen much combat. A bow and shield are strapped to his back. The only thing that doesn't stand out as worn is his breast plate, which almost looks new.

Story:
Current:
Boonom left his village a few years ago, traveling where the wind takes him. He's a free spirit by nature and is afraid of nothing. (Except maybe a bunny, he's deathly afraid of bunnies.)

Background:
Boonom distinguished himself at an early age when he won various competitions with his peers and surpassed them in most of their day to day duties. Valuing strength, the tribe seen Boonom as a possible replacement for their chieftain.

The chieftains son Oob, was Boonom's only competition. While hunting with Boonom, Oob had an accident when he tripped on a rabbit and fell to his death. The tribe seen this as a underhanded act and outcast Boonom.

Devastated by the loss of his companion and being outcast from his tribe, Boonom decided it would be best to leave and has traveled ever since.

Robin and Duke. Thank you for the kind words. It is easy to be a good DM when you have good players!

I will make some fluff up for him tomorrow after I have worked it out more.

Buth Fluff:

Buth grew up in the son of a tribal historian, his father kept the knowledge of their people alive. At a young age Buth was selected to continue this tradition, his father being very proud of the fact that one of his children was selected. This was not the case of poor Both, a group of adventures once stayed at Buth’s village for a few days after an encounter with a group of Ogres. The Adventurers told stories of the deeds, good and bad, great and utter failures. One of the men always seemed to have a drink in his hand and a pipe lit. Buth at found these things interesting, even sneaking out one night after everyone had gone to bed, finding the supplies of alcohol Buth started drinking.

The next morning he was found by his father, Buth had shamed his father by indulging in that of these strangers, stealing their goods and ingesting alcohol. Buth’s tribe were historians and diplomats, not childhood alcoholics. Buth’s father was able to salvage the honor of the family but Buth was forbidden from becoming a historian. Buth took to secreting drinks and fighting, eventually he was sent into battle hoping to die against the giants.

Buth did not die but all his brothers did, after this disastrous battle Buth took to heading south, southern Varisia was nice and he heard that adventures were always looking for some hired muscle. Taking what remained of his equipment and his shattered pride Buth made his way to Sandpoint, finding the taverns very welcoming to someone who wanted drink and was willing to perform hard labour for it.

FYI to all submissions:

Both Crunch and Fluff are important.

Paraphrasing (all work and no play saying).....

All Crunch and No Fluff makes Jack a dull submission.

-- david

edit: Note to all submitters. 3 of the 4 current players have sent me a PM regarding whom they like / dislike. 2 of them are VERY Fluff driven, so those with No or Minimal Fluff, take heed.
edit2: You do not have to write a treatise, but a solid paragraph or two would be good.

Added most of a ten minute background to my profile though I'm still thinking about adding 2 more characters to it since I only did one. I'll post it here under spoiler for any who want to read it.

10 minute background:

10 minute background
5 Background and Concept Elements
1. Trained as a knightly cavalier he focused mainly on the foot to foot combat and developed a code of honor more around helping his allies than any form of fair fighting.
2. Son of a knight and used to more privilige and wealth than the average man he's more likely to overpay for something and questions why he can't afford things now that he no longer has his father's wealth to back him up.
3. His training alongside his 3 older brothers taught him the value of helping his allies to do better, even when it costs him personal glory.
4. He can take the failures of his allies rather personally and strives to help them do better, but woe on any who would add insult those failures.
5. Appearance and wit can be far more dangerous for him than his sword, leading him to try and bluff or intimidate his foes before closing with his blade.

2 goals
1. To earn enough fame and reputation to prove himself worthy of his family name.
2. He seeks not just to elevate himself but also his allies to positions of esteem. No one will call his friends "worthless wastrels" by the time he's done.

2 secrets
1. He sold most of the jewelery he had left home with to make ends meet on the way to sandpoint after his initial coin ran out.
2. Nim's spending habits and the jewelery he had left with has spread rumor of a travelling lord in disguise with his description. Having not stayed still long after he left home, he hadn't heard the rumors himself, but a lone lord without his retinue has attracted the attention of bandits and robbers who seek to kidnap him for the ransom of his estate.

4 3 people tied to the character
1. Nim's brother Dullant Avundarod, the 2nd youngest of the bunch, resents the attention and extra training his father gave Nim. Dullant did everything he could to win his father's praise, but it was only ever used to show Nim what a true knight was like and never praised for it's own merit.

Character update:
Added a missing trait and corrected a couple of errors in the submission.

Sorry for the novella background. During the original creation we rolled on this series of background event charts and then were asked to build a story around the results. This resulted in a much longer than usual background story.

Since it was already made up for this character and campaign, I just reused it for this submission.

Submissions will close at 17:00 Eastern US time. About 8 hours and 50 minutes from now.

-- david

Awesome a good luck on the choices! You have a bunch of great ones.

Probably should be awesome and good luck even. :P
