Is a cleric of Asmodeus welcome?

Ryuk wrote:

Certainly. Feel free to post a concept and some mechanics. Full details in my first post, but the characters are 1st level and the build is 25 points. Three traits, one of which should come from Cheliax, Empire of Devils.

If you're still looking I made this character for another campaign, but I could reskin him as a Chelaxian very easily. He's currently built as a 5th level standard summoner. Depending on the rest of the party build I think I may make him a Master Summoner. That seems to fit the Chelaxian vibe a little better, but I'm open to suggestions.

If you would I look over his history and let me know if that plus his role is good for your campaign. I'll edit his history to be Chelaxian specific. If it's a good fit I'll do the work of fixing him to match your mechanical criteria. If you have someone for his role no worries and good gaming.

At this point we are specifically looking for a divine caster to replace our cleric that had to bow out. Unfortunately that means a summoner wouldn't be a good fit, but if you have any divine caster ideas, feel free to toss them into the ring.

Thanks.

Certainly. Feel free to post a concept and some mechanics. Full details in my first post, but the characters are 1st level and the build is 25 points. Three traits, one of which should come from Cheliax, Empire of Devils.

My PC's name is Iñigo. He worships Asmodeus for the order he brings out of chaos. He is a stickler for rules but is not above to finding loopholes therein (LE in alignment, probably). He joined the Order of the Godclaw as a signifer and is slowly sharking his way up the ranks. He figures he needs to bring prestige to order so that his own career advancement would be guaranteed.

I would like to present my application:

Raven Hawthorne, a LN Half-Elven Oracle of Asmodeus

for consideration.

Let me know what you think :-)

Appearance:

Raven is lean and lightly muscled, with pale skin, short-cropped black with a pronounced widow’s peak, and piercing blue eyes. He usually dresses in a gorgeously tailored Courtier's Outfit, with a single visible rapier at his hip. Generally, he moves with almost feline grace, and continually shifts his gaze, trying to take in everything around him.

Background:

Raven knows relatively little about his parents, as he has no memory of them. From what he has been told, his mother was a relatively pretty lass from one of the minor noble families at the Imperial court in Egorian, who caught the eye of an Elven diplomat; when it was discovered that she was pregnant, she was bundled off to Westcrown for her confinement, to stay with some distant relatives (by marriage) who had a small estate there, and made a modest living by running a series of theaters. After the birth, she returned to Egorian, but Raven remained in Westcrown.

He grew-up in Westcrown, where he was treated fairly, albeit without any love – the branch of the family to which he was assigned had no time to coddle the bastard son of a distant relative. However, they did not stint in his education, and he was raised alongside the other scions of the house; although not naturally inclined to book-learning, he was instilled with the importance of recognising conflicts that one could not win, whether in business, politics or war, and how to avoid them.

He became adept at spotting weaknesses, and how to exploit them, and discovered that he had a knack for noticing things that others generally missed, and had a way with people; he had a knack for reading people's minds, and convincing them to... do... things. In time, he gravitated towards assisting with some of the family’s more clandestine activities.

It was after one such task went wildly wrong, and an innocent bystander was badly hurt (It was supposed to be a simple task of sabotage, embarrassing a rival, no more; after all, generally, you would expect that people would move out of the way of an out-of-control cart of beer barrels, wouldn’t you?), that Raven decided he needed to ‘spread his wings’ and find a new stomping ground. He had heard of the recent push by the Queen to recruit bands of adventurers, and decided that joining-up would be an excellent way to put some distance between himself and his immediate ‘problem'...

...of course, at the back of his mind, there is always the niggling desire to find the family that decided that he was too much of an embarrassment to acknowledge; not to kill them, but to crush them politically beneath the heel of the scion that they turned their back on. To that end, of course, he will need to accumulate as much political capital as he can...

For DM Morvius

Spoiler:
Seeing as Raven Hawthorne is ready, I am withdrawing my application at this time.

Ryuk - I'm not planning on making a decision right this moment and will keep this open for at least a couple of days, so if you do want to flesh out a character/mechanics you are more than welcome to.

That goes for any other potential applicants as well, I'll try to give people that might be on the fence or working on something some time to get it in.

Fair enough. Thanks anyway.

Well since I didn't make the first cut, I'll throw together a cleric for tomorrow. I have been thinking of playing a classic healer/support cleric for a while now so this should be a good opportunity.

I'm looking forward to the submission. I will likely leave this open until the end of the day tomorrow/early on Sunday and then grab someone.

Raven Hawthorne - I like the submission so far. The only odd comment was that the description mentions a rapier, but he has a morningstar instead =P Stats and spell selection look good. Our cleric was a front-liner, so having another frontline divine caster would be a good fit. Oh, and other notes I just noticed - you have Diplomacy listed twice under skills (and therefore spent two separate skill points on it). Also our wizard already has skill focus (Knowledge [planes]) that's not the end of the world, but if you want to swap that for something else, do know that we've already got one PC with that skill covered.

Ah. That was indeed meant to be a morningstar :-P

I have changed the Second Diplomacy listing to Intimidate.

As for the Skill Focus(Knowledge[Planes]), I feel it is thematically appropriate for an Oracle devoted to Asmodeus (in Cheliax, no less), to retain it - having an extra party member who is good at identifying outsiders will never be a bad thing ;-)

Raven You might want to note that your character's skill set is almost entirely duplicated by the current party (this being the advantage of making a character after seeing what everyone else is playing). While it's certainly thematically appropriate to have knowledge (planes), having two characters that have spent feats to be good at the same knowledge skill isn't all that great an idea. Nevermind that skill focus on a knowledge skill is a sub-par mechanical choice. (Oh, *and* the bard can also roll on knowledge planes checks, so it's not like we don't already have backup for the rare occasion that Bealzius will roll low.)

As for the rest of your skills, they're almost entirely social and we have a bard. Duplicating diplomacy, bluff, and the rest isn't *terrible* but it's certainly less useful than the possibility of branching out.

Also, I assume DM Morvius doesn't have a problem with you dropping Wisdom to 7 because he didn't mention it. But just know that the rules set out for the rest of us was that no stat could be dropped below 8.

Thank god for my players reminding me of my own rules! Yes, please do adjust the stat spread to bring the wisdom up to 8 at least. Skills are your call, but do feel free to take a look through our current PCs and what they have covered. You might find some niche that you think would be really cool to cover that currently seems missing.

If you really want skill focus in something, how about Knowledge Religion?

Yea, someone with knowledge(religion) and some of the wisdom based skills would round out the party a bit more, like being an actual cleric as opposed to an oracle. We have all the social skills covered and a good chunk of the knowledge skills due to the bard and the wizard.

Okay, I dropped Int back to 10, and bumped Wisdom to 8.

I switched the skill focus over to Knowledge(Religion).

I realise that it is less than optimal, by my intention is to later down the track (at level 7) take 'Eldritch Heritage' to pick-up a Familiar.

Regarding 'wisdom based skills', there are only Heal, Perception, Profession, Sense Motive, and Survival. Of those, I already have Perception, I note that (from what I can tell), a couple of people are already trained in Sense Motive, and picking a Profession is always a bit of a gamble. That only leave Heal and Survival, and frankly, the later is not something I really see my Raven taking, based on his back-story. If you really want someone to take Heal, though, I am perfectly happy to work that into my build :-)

Ugh, this weekend kind of got away from me...I think I'll just bow out of this one.

Good luck to you all!

I have re-jigged Raven's background somewhat, and switched-over from being trained in Bluff to Heal.

Thoughts?

Appearance:

Raven is lean and lightly muscled, with pale skin, short-cropped black with a pronounced widow’s peak, and piercing blue eyes. He usually dresses simply in a chain shirt, covered with a tabard dyed black and crimson, and has a single visible morningstar at his hip. Generally, he moves with a heavy tread, thumping the ground heavily with each step, and continually shifts his gaze, trying to take in everything around him.

He eventually migrated to Egorian, where, with no better prospects available to him due to his 'unofficial' status, he took-up a position in the Church of Asmodeus; at least there, he knew that he would be judged harshly, but fairly, based on his actions, and not solely upon his heritage.

Although hardly fit for clerical work, he was willing muscle for the Church, and the ease with which he was able to produce results, and ingratiate himself with his superiors, earned him sufficient favor that he was granted the 'honor' of participating in an experiment: As a result of a lengthy ritual, he had the essence of a Levaloch (aka a 'Warmonger Devil') bound into his mortal frame. Of course, what he did not know at the time was that he was only the latest in a long line of failed experiments...

...fortunately for Raven, he managed to survive the experience, and discovered that there were both advantages and disadvantages to his new state: He had developed a sudden familiarity with the weapons of war, he seemed to have developed almost a sixth-sense when it came to battle, and the direct link to Hell that he had been provided with enabled him to manifest certain minor magics. The downside, of course, was that in battle, the Levaloch's fury gained more of an upper hand, and he was liable to completely ignore allies... unless they uttered words in the Infernal tongue.

Raven was ultimately released by the Church for 'field exercises', and is monitored from a distance with a great deal of interest; after all, if he continues to perform well under 'real' conditions, he could serve as the template for a new legion of Hell-spawned warriors...

Motivations/Goals:
Raven is a highly motivated individual, who, despite the process that he was put through by the Church of Asmodeus, is still fiercely loyal to them, as they have proven to be far more trustworthy than his own flesh-and-blood family. Of course, at the back of his mind, there is always the niggling desire to find the family that decided that he was too much of an embarrassment to acknowledge; not to kill them, but to crush them politically beneath the heel of the scion that they turned their back on. To that end, he will need to accumulate as much political capital as he can, and he sees the Queen's recent push to recruit bands of adventures as an excellent way to start doing exactly that...

I'm still waiting on a couple of response from the group. That said, the only thing I'd add is a thought about who might have sponsored your character for this mission. Would the church have done it or would you have wanted someone else? Keep in mind that your PC doesn't actually need to know, but can if you'd like them to.

Based on Raven's revised background, I would lean towards him being sponsored by the Church, as any successes that he managed to accumulate whilst working as part of the Unit would reflect well on the program, and serve to increase 'R&D' funding for the Church. If he ends-up falling, well... clearly they just need to go back to the drawing-board to produce a 'revised model'. ;-)

Alright Raven, welcome aboard. Please check in at the OOC thread here and the IC thread is here. I'll post in the OOC thread about getting you caught up to the group.

Hello there forum goers,

We once again have a vacancy as our wizard is bowing out of the game. As a result I'm opening this back up for an arcane caster. The group currently consists of a bard, an archer, a sword and board fighter, a rogue, and an oracle of battle.

Full details are in my opening post of the thread, but the PCs have recently hit second level, so please make any submissions as lvl 2 characters.

Looking forward to some great applications and feel free to check out the OOC Thread and the IC Thread.

I have a magus in mind, should I submit him and see if it would it do the trick or are you looking just for full casters?

I'm looking for full casters, or at least characters that can fill the role of an arcane caster to replace our wizard. As you can see we've got plenty of people that stand in melee and do hit point damage to the bad guy, we need some more widespread magical support.

Background:

Miss de Leonne is a member of a minor Chelaxian house who has spent the majority of her formative years at school, and has actually seen little of her home or parents. Towards the end of her formal schooling she was sent a letter by her parents informing her she had been betrothed, and she was to be taken by carriage to her new husbands home and married immediately. Sensing that this arrangement would no longer allow her to pursue academic pursuits- both scholarly and magical- she deigned not to board said carriage, and instead took what gold and items she had on hand and turned towards adventuring.

At school, she focused mainly on lightning and storm magic. There was always something compelling to Caitlynn about putting order to something as chaotic and unpredictable as a storm. Also, while she would never admit it, she does enjoy the acrid smell of something stuck by lightning.

Caitlynn is haughty, and arrogant for the most part. She (correctly) believes she is smarter than most people, and is not really afraid to make that apparent. Suprisingly, she can be humble when proven wrong- if only because she knows not accepting the truth only makes one look more foolish. With long black hair, high cheekbones, and a slim but lithe figure, she knows she is pretty but her cold and haughty demeanor often turns people away. Even among friends- most of whom wouldn't even know she considers them friends- she barely manages to tone it down. She does respect intelligence when she sees it, but by and large she is your typical ice queen.

Still need to touch up her equipment, and find a third trait, but I have the old Pathfinder campaign setting book that I don't think has traits in it. (It just says Campaign Setting, not Inner Sea Guide or whatever the book is called).

I'll take another look at the sheet and background, but the first thing I noticed was ability scores. This game is a 25 point buy and I currently see you having 40 points spent on them.

Here is Andreev Brevic, an Andoran born Wizard (Universalist), I've yet to choose the traits.
A couple questions; how much money should Andreev have available?
how should I roll the hp for level 2?

Background:

Born in Andoran in a wealthy family involved in the efforts to put an end to Cheliaxian slaves trade Andreev was since his earliest childhood taught the values of freedom and love for his country. He was never the most popular kid, so he retreated among his books were he learnt about the glorious past of Cheliax and began to appreciate the magnificency of a country that now was submited to the control of evil.

When he was 12 his parents decided it would be in his best interests to get a job as an apprentice to a local wizard, under the tutoring of Old Belin, Andreev found something he was really good at and took his job really seriously, he made his best efforts to keep Old Belin satisfied with her apprentice and got hold of as many magic books as he could.

For his sixteenth birthday Old Belin sent him back home, telling him that he was already a wizard and now he had to meet the world beyond the libraries, learnt to put his magic to a good use. Upòn his return his parents invited him to join them in a raid to free a group of slaves from a Cheliaxian town just the other side of the border. Seeing a chance to put his powers to good use Andreev agreed enthusiatically.

It didn't go as planned.

The raid was easy, but the family didn't know that the slaves they were freeing were actually dangerous criminals condemned to slavery for terrible actions. Once they had crossed the border and were on Andoran soil they betrayed their liberators, murdering several of the men, raping the women and then murdering them and keeping Andreev and his older brother Diniev alive expecting to get some ransom for the young boys.

But they were no experts in the wilderness and so, got lost and unknowingly crossed the border back to Cheliax. They found a small hamlet where they expected to get some rest and find somebody who could write to send a letter to the boys' relatives asking for money. The local magistrate offered his help and told them he would get back with his writing materials the next morning.

He came back, but the only thing he intended to write was the criminals death sentence, and alongside him came three hellknights. They easily dispatched the ruffians andd freed the boys. After finding out thet they had freed slaves the hellknights had an argument about what to do with them. Deciding they were young and probably had learned that slavery is justified they gave them a choice. They could return to Andoran on their own, or they could swear loyalty to Cheliax and stay there.

Deniev inmediately chose to go back to Andoran and was given food and water to make the trip. Andreev wasn't so clear, he saw in the glory of the hellknights a pale shadow of the greater glory of Cheliax, he saw that order is necessary to keep the villains at bay, he saw a place were maybe he could really fit. He decided to stay and swore loyalty to Cheliax.

He's been loyal to Cheliax for half of his life now, he understands that there are several things he dislikes in the country, but it works, people are kept safe, devils may walk among their rulers but otherwise there'd be demons under human guise roaming through rivers of blood and fire. He knows, he freed some of them once.

Improved Evasion (Ex) You can avoid damage from many area-effect attacks. If you make a successful Reflex save against an attack that normally deals half damage on a successful save, you instead take no damage, and even on a failed saving throw you take only half damage. Share Spells (Ex) The master may cast a spell with a target of "You" on her animal companion (as a spell with a range of touch) instead of on herself. A master may cast spells on her animal companion even if the spells normally do not affect creatures of the companion's type (animal). Spells cast in this way must come from a class that grants an animal companion. This ability does not allow the animal to share abilities that are not spells, even if they function like spells.
Speak One Language (Su) A raven familiar can speak one language of its master's choice as a supernatural ability.

Fluff:
Pontia has not led a sheltered life. She was born in Magnimar to a Varisan mother, the result of a single night's tryst with a Chelaxian visitor. Her mother named her Anca, and when she was very young made the ultimately fatal mistake of trying to find Anca's father in Westcrown. Fortunately for young Anca, she at least looked Chelaxian, so after her mother died she wasn't persecuted too badly in the gang of homeless children she fell in with. She soon realized that a life on the streets was all too likely to be brutish and short, and resolved that she would one day make something of herself.

Her first way off the streets came when she began to grow into a moderately attractive young woman. Prostitution was not what she wanted to end up doing, but it was at least a chance to make enough money to satisfy her intellectual appetites (and the laws of Cheliax offered her some small amount of protection from abusive pimps and customers). For her towering intellect would not be denied. Finally, after years of barely tolerated unpleasant work only undertaken to purchase the tomes she craved, she became a wizard and left prostitution forever. As a sign of that she changed her name and (with his permission and blessing) took the family name of her tutor in wizardry.

Since then, she's come to appreciate the faith of Abadar. She knows that over and above her hard work to better herself she was extremely lucky to escape the many ways her way of life could have killed her, and she believes that strong communities are less likely to breed the youth gangs of Westcrown or the virtual slavery of most of the prostitution there. For that reason, the chance to work with a group to bring law and order to those places in Cheliax that lack it is the answer to a prayer, and she treats it as a near-crusade.

More Fluff on Pontia:
Appearance & Personality: Pontia is tall and slender, with short black hair and dark eyes. She typically dresses in modest and practical wizard's robes, and puts little or no effort into dressing well or looking good; her hair is short because it's less trouble that way, and she's had more than her fill of working to be attractive. Most of the time she comes across as disinterested and aloof, but that's because she spends a lot of time thinking and doesn't put much effort into presentation (except when she's teaching). It's not that she's rude, it's just that social activities don't interest her very much. These days, she spends most of her time on scholarship, wizardry, and teaching disadvantaged children at the local Temple of Abadar. She's quite enthusiastic about all of these, but she lives for scholarly discussions...preferably in venues where her appearance and gender are immaterial.

I honestly don't mind competition. That said, I like the submissions so far. As for the question on wealth and hp - the PCs haven't had a chance to really shop yet, so I'm going to say take double your max starting gold for wealth and for second level HP you have the option of either taking average or rolling for it (in this thread or once selected on the OOC thread).

John Woodford - Did you have a spell selection in mind? I'd like to see, at least generally, what spells you were thinking of starting with.

Spell List:
Tentatively thinking (besides all the cantrips) of:
Prot/Chaos
Grease
Mage Armor
Obscuring Mist
Sleep
Color Spray
Enlarge Person
Stumble Gap (APG)
Identify
Comprehend Languages

For feats, probably Improved Initiative and Spell Focus (Conjuration).

For the traits Andreev would take Theoretical Magician (+2 to Spellcraft checks) and Suspicious (+1 to Sense Motive checks and it is considered a class skill) I have doubts if I should take a Cheliaxian Regional Feat or as he isn't Cheliaxian born I should take an Andoran one, or none.

Equipment:
bolts, crossbow (10); dagger (cold iron); Backpack, Masterwork [ Blanket; Bedroll; Rope (Silk/50 ft.); Sealing Wax; Spellbook (Wizard's/Blank); Waterskin (Filled); Case (Map or Scroll); Alchemist's Kindness (x5); ]; Bandoleer [ Acid (Flask) (x2); Alchemist's Fire (Flask) (x3); Alkali (Flask); ]; Case (Map or Scroll) [ Parchment (Sheet) (x5); ]; Crossbow, Light ; Spell Component Pouch [ Signet Ring; ]; 9gp, 7 sp

Just giving a heads up to the applicants that I'm getting some input from our current players before making a decision.

Andreev - The real purpose of requiring a Chelish trait was a deeper tie to Cheliax. As it comes from the C:EoD book, assuming you learned the Theoretical Magician as a result of connections/time spent in Cheliax, I don't mind you taking whatever Regional (or other) trait you want.

I submit Narnel for your consideration.

DM Morvius

Spoiler:
I have selected the Secret Revolutionary regional trait for Narnel. This would be a hidden part of his character development. He would be working from the inside, appearing to be in league with the desires of the Throne, but in reality, he would be passing information to his compatriots. I thought that it would be an interesting twist. His desire to fight for the public would be unquestioned, but his support of the current House Thrune control would be a farce, like any true spy.

Are you sure you're in the right recruitment thread?

If you read the spoiler, you probably would not think so, but I can always tweak the background to fit if you like the sniper-build.

We're looking for an arcane caster...

If you say so...Narnel is withdrawn.

I'm considering applying with a divination focused sorcerer/witch but I'm a bit concerned that the party is already a bit large. How good is the pacing? I don't want to get involved in a snail's-crawl PBP.

Our last wizard had to drop out, unfortunately, because he felt the game was moving to fast for him. We have several players who post quite frequently. Our slowest manages to post every day. DM Morvius included links to the threads above. Feel free to check on how quickly updates are made.

DM Morvius, I've been looking at a recently-added character in a game I'm running on the boards, and it gave me a couple of ideas. If possible I'd like to change Pontia's crunch somewhat, w/no changes to background & personality. Would that be OK with you?

Liberty's Edge

My Int-based Sorcerer: Geminus Aggripa Leroung.

History:
Born one of youngest sons to house Leroung, to one of the powerful house's youngest daughters - Semina Leroung, not much was expected of the boy. Regardless, he grew up with all of the luxuries and privileges that you expect given to those of noble birth: excellent education, training in various arts, and the best physicians available. Geminus's supernatural talents became known at an early age during a routine magical screening all Leroung children are exposed to at a young age and despite his powers being in-born and sorcerous in nature (something frowned upon by the Leroung elders) he was given the schooling and training he needed to harness them.

Geminus did well in his studies but his passions always lay elsewhere. He had a natural affinity for animals, quickly bonding with the house warhounds and steeds and despite his smaller stature he was incredibly physically active often wrestling and rough-housing with the servant-boys and girls against his tutor's wishes. He would often skip lessons, especially geography which he found insufferably boring, to play in the gardens with Nassus, his favorite hound or to hide in the library and pore over tales about heroic adventures.

Geminus went through life in this way, dutifully fulfilling what was expected of him while secretly wishing for so much more. His family, too occupied with issues of wealth and power, did little to help the youth realize his dreams and instead focused on finding something for the boy to do that would further their own lofty goals. Fortune smiled on the young sorcerer one day an opportunity presented itself that would grant both Geminus and his house what they wanted.

The call went out for sons and daughters of Cheliax. Heroes were needed for to deal with an unnamed 'problem' deep within the region's countryside. Geminus pleaded with his Grandsire to be sent to answer the call. The Leroung elder, eager to have his grandson out of the house and doing something with his life, granted the request.

Crunch:
Full stat block will have to wait until I get home.

STR 16, DEX 12, CON 14, INT 18, WIS 8, CHA 10

Crossblooded Sorcerer - Sage and Sylvan bloodlines
He will be accompanied by Nassus his favorite warhound but his magic will focus on divination and support: dispel magic, scrying, dimension door, etc.
Geminus is extremely well-read with good modifiers and max ranks in most knowledge skills.

Specifically:
Arcana
Planes
Religion
Nature
Dungeoneering
History
Handle Animal
Spellcraft

Go for it.

Feral - Is there a reason for the 16 STR? That and starting with a +0 will save as a caster seems rough. Is there a reason you went that direction?

Yes, in this case, as stated, we are only looking for an arcane spellcaster to replace the wizard that we are losing.

Dotting. I have a fluff-headed Chelish Diviner I'd love to use.

Liberty's Edge

I have a thing against the physically helpless arcanist stereotype. =P

Your point buy was generous so I wanted to put those extra points into strength or dex. I ended up opting for strength because I didn't have the feat to spare for weapon finesse. Geminus is by no means a fighter-caster.

+0 Will save is rough but I'm okay with my characters having a weakness. I'm not a big optimizer and I think the flexibility the second bloodline gives is worth the hit to saves. I'll probably take Iron Will sooner rather than later to make up the difference.

I'll have the full stat block and his progression over the next couple levels up in an hour or so.
