DM Morvius's Chelish Heroes

Game Master Tourach

1 to 50 of 218 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | 4 | 5 | next > last >>

I'm looking to recruit ~3-4 players for a PbP game set in and around Cheliax. Two additional PC slots are already reserved.

While this will not initially be in character knowledge, Queen Abrogail II has decided to set in motion a plan intended to retake Sargava for Cheliax. The first step in her plan has been to order that a number of small groups of adventurers be assembled with the hope that one of them will grow in fame and power – most importantly, garnering public opinion in Chelish holdings while still remaining loyal to throne and the nobility and instilling fear in the enemies of Cheliax. The PCs will be one of these groups.

Important to any applications is that the character be at least generally loyal to Cheliax. While the character need not prefer the diabolical alliances, this will not be a campaign about “freeing” Cheliax. This is going to be a campaign about the idea of bringing order to lawlessness and about the fact that heroism and grandeur can and does exist within Cheliax. There will be a lot of demon fighting, lots of killing bandits, and quite a lot of protecting villages from wandering monsters. Also note that there will be a lot of working within settlements and cities, sorting out reports of sedition and treason as neighbors turn each other in. The way that the PCs deal with the populace will have a great effect on their success. So, while this shouldn't be about “freeing Cheliax”, it also isn't about killing innocents – a good aligned character that is accepting of the allegiance of the government to Hell in order to protect its citizens would fit in well.

I'll be giving additional scrutiny to any LG or LE applications to make sure that they fit with the theme of the campaign, but please do submit them. Also, characters that have good backgrounds and suggest ties to Chelish structure (aspiring Inquisitors or Hellknights, those seeking political position, etc.) will be given preference. Special bonus points for worshiping appropriate gods, from Asmodeus, to Iomedae, to Sarenrae.

Also, please note that this will likely be a mechanically challenging campaign. As such, I'll also be looking over the statistics to ensure that the characters are at least somewhat well designed with group combat in mind.

Character creation will be as follows:
Races: All standard races from the PFRPG (Core Rulebook) and CR appropriate monster races from the Bestiery (I/II) will be allowed. Racial options from the Advanced Player's Guide (APG) will be allowed. Do keep in mind however that Cheliax is, overall, racist so keep that in mind when choosing a race.
Classes: All classes (Base and Prestige) from the Core Rulebook, APG, and Ultimate Magic will be allowed. Any Archetype for these base classes from listed sources will also be allowed. Note that I am unlikely to accept any paladin applications, but an exceptionally well-tailored one could work.
Favored Class: The favored class options from the Core Rulebook and APG will be acceptable.
Alignment: Characters can be any of the following alignments – LG, NG, LN, N, CN, LE
Abilities: Characters will be based on the Epic Fantasy (25 point buy) found in the Core Rulebook. No ability can be raised higher than 18 (prior to racial modifiers). Only one ability can be lowered below 10 and that ability cannot be lowered below 8 (after racial modifiers).
Feats: Any feat from the Core Rulebook, APG, or UM is acceptable.
Traits: Character's will start with three traits, one of which must be a Regional Trait from Cheliax.
Hit Points: Characters will start out with Maximum hit points for their class at 1st level.
Starting Gold: Characters will start with Maximum Starting Gold for their base class.

If you have any questions feel free to ask. Please post at the minimum a set of statistics (in profile preferred), a character synopsis, and a short back story with any application.

About the start:
The PCs will have been assembled in Citadel Dinyar in Isger and set to head out along the periphery of the Chitterwood. The eventual goal is to reach Gillamoor and set about cleansing it of the zombie plague as the first of the group's (hopefully) many great acts in the defense of Cheliax and its holdings. The game will start about halfway through the journey in a small town along the way. Feel free to incorporate the trip so far in your applications.

I'm looking to keep the game moving along fairly quickly, so I'm looking for players that can post at least once a day, and even more is certainly okay.

Given the somewhat specialized request for PCs, I'm going to be accepting applications for two weeks.

Thanks in advance and if you post an application and want a review/commentary, just ask, I'm happy to oblige.

Liberty's Edge

You said that 2 places were already reserved? Do you know what classes they will be?

I am thinking, right now, of an Infernal Binder (Conjurer) Wizard, but knowing who else is applying, and for what roles would help some.

I might want to try a Summoner, since I haven't had the opportunity yet.

Also, are we adventuring in wilderness, urban, or dungeon settings for the most part?

Nothing decided yet regarding the two reservations' classes so feel free to submit whatever you like. As for the locale, there will be a fair amount of overland travel, but most of the important stories will take place in small towns and surrounding dungeons. Some of that will be up to the PCs and what they want the group's "stories" to be and the campaign will include all sorts of things from the big cities to the mountain ranges, but small towns, forests, and dungeons are a safe bet. As far as enemies go, aside from the common bandits, undead and demons will be fairly regular.

Liberty's Edge RPG Superstar 2011 Top 32

I am considering creating a vivisectionist alchemist. Maybe a character who was from Sargava and had returned to the mother-land. That might require an older and thus probably non-human PC.

Liberty's Edge

I hope this isn't a stupid question. Are Cheliax regional traits, the ones from the book Cheliax, Empire of Devils, or is there a better source for a list of these?

Regional Traits

This section of the site has all of the regional traits. You can pick and choose the ones from Cheliax.

The Exchange

Hmm. Oracle of Asmodeus sounds interesting [/sinister laugh]

Either that, or maybe a Summoner, also devoted to Asmodeus

Either way, I'll have that up in the next few days, and as for posting every day, I often post multiple times/day in both of Patcher's PBP's that I'm in, so I'd like to think that I'm pretty reliable.

This definately sounds like a very cool campaign to be a part of.

I'm considering throwing up a Halfling Inquisitor / Rogue. An ex-slave who ratted out his former master when he found out that he was plotting rebellion. Now acts as an informant to the Hellknights.

stardust wrote:

Correct, the ones from that book. And I should correct myself, any Chelish traits are acceptable for the third trait, not just the Regional ones.

Ok, I am definitely interested. Concept is an Inquisitor who will eventually take levels in Hellknight. Will be a Human, to gain the bonus feat which will be Heavy Armor Prof.

I can usually post pretty regularly. I'm in a bunch of games as both PC and GM, but I have access to the boards via my smartphone, so i'm good with posting :)

Liberty's Edge

Cool, thanks. I'm making a Summoner, devoted to Asmodeus.

The traits I've selected are Asmodean Demon Hunter, Diabolical Dabbler, and Natural Leader... Let me know if these are okay... =).

>.> Exactly what I was going to do. Down to the last trait. Dang. Oh wel, I'm sure I'll figure something else out.

Edit: I can make a Summoner work, although I'll have to change concepts. I'm thinking a lawful neutral hellknight[not going for the PrC] that literally summons the armor onto himself.

Liberty's Edge

May I present Antonius Calamel, a rather dry and studious Summoner. (I'm going to call him a Warlock, since the Cheliax book refers to warlocks, but doesn't really specify what that is.)

Antonius is bookish and focused primarily on his faith and on the hunting of demons. He spends the rest of his time communing with creatures from beyond, especially a powerful devil named Gorsanthus. This blue skinned creature is humanoid with great leather wings and four arms, two of which end in giant pincers instead of human hands.

Antonius spends an inordinate amount of time with Gorsanthus, and has even been known to bring him outside the traditional conjuration circles. If the authorities object, they have yet to say anything.

Liberty's Edge

Here's a little bit more fleshed out backstory.

Born in the City of Nine Forts, Antonius Calamel is son of Grazel Calamel, one of the wealthiest merchants in Mercanto district. Throughout most of his childhood, Antonius was gifted with anything he could ever ask for. This led to a bit of a spoiled effect when he was growing up. His parents were criticized for not raising Antonius in the true Asmodean way, with strict rules and punishments.

Calamel's Caramels is a confectionary chain of shops that still belong to the Calamel family. The motto of the Calamels is "With power comes pleasure." The Calamels are quite happy with their positions of financial establishment, even if a rumor of heresy sometimes pervades the family. The purpose of a well disciplined life is not to pursue pleasure, after all, but to serve Asmodeus. As a result, the Calamels became even more disciplined in attending the Church of Hell.

Grazel Calamel does not want the same problems currently faced by the Archheathen, the mayor of Corentyn, to also befall his family. This was the primary reason that Antonius Calamel was handed over to the Warlocks of Corentyn, while in his teens. This group of diabolicists focused on conjuring and summoning creatures from the Nine Hells, to better understand the will of Asmodeus. Slowly, Antonius learned to relinquish the pleasures he had been raised with and came to understand the perfection of Hell in its completed form. From the Warlocks of Corentyn, Antonius learned to strengthen his summonings of fiendish creatures.

Oronothos, the Ice Devil of Corentyn, works closely with diabolicists to end the threat of demons. Once he had passed through the ranks of the Warlocks of Corentyn, Antonius was handed over to Special Forces, a branch of militant diabolists controlled by the Order of the Chain and in full collaboration with Oronothos. After rigorous training, Antonius fulfilled his obligations to Asmodeus for his life and liberty by swearing a blood-oath against the demons that plagued both devils and mankind. The Asmodean pentacle scar is still visible on his hand.

Description Antonius seems, in a word, mundane. He wears a Chelish parade armor over black scholar's clothing. Most of the time, his summoner's mark is glowing on his forehead, meaning that somewhere about there is devil who serves him willingly. Antonius is more quiet than bold, however, and prefers to keep to himself.

Motives Antonius has been trained well by the forces which he was raised under. He has virtually no feelings for his own wellbeing, and regards as his highest priority the wellness of the state. (LN with LE tendencies.) Even to the point of sacrificing himself or others if it must be done. Antonius is in a word, bland. His individuality and uniqueness has been so supressed by the rigorous training (and torture), that he expresses neither. He even speaks in a monotone. However, such suppression is not without its consequences. Secretly, Antonius has developed addictions to both confectionaries and alcohol, preferring sweet wines, meads, or liquors to other beverages. In public, he eats only trail rations or simple foods such as bread and vegetables.

Tactics Antonius's choice of weapons indicates that he has no desire to fight. Most of his 'weapons' are well hidden. He carries only a small 'scepter' or light mace with an Asmodean pentacle. If in trouble, however, Antonius summons a fiendish creature, then proceeds to summon Gorsanthus.

Sounds interesting, I'd be interested.

Was actualy tempted to try a Paladin, but guess I'd settle for a cavalier or fighter, member of a noble house fallen from grace and looking for a way to replenish his fortunes this way. Most probably LG.

But before I get deeper into details I wanted to ask whether you'd be ok with my application at all, as I have never before played any PbP. I have some experience with Pathfinder though, so no problem there. I would be able to post at least once a day, but probably at weird times (being a german)

So, if you see no ptoblems so far I'd get to work.

The Exchange

I'm interested in this one. I was thinking about a Synthesist, but since Summoner concepts of various types seem to already be well represented, I'm contemplating a half-elf Barbarian, heading towards Sorcerer, and eventually Dragon Disciple, picking up the Eldritch Heritage Feats for the Abyssal Bloodline along the way.

Mechanically the concept is (obviously) to maximise Strength.

Background-wise I'm thinking he's the (unacknowledged) bastard son of a fairly renowned male Hellknight (with a family history of dragon-blood), and the female elven demon-worshipper he was sent to battle. Long story short, the Hellknight was captured, used and abused, and by the time he broke free to win the day, the little tyke was born. After consultation with the Hellknight powers-that-be, the child was spared, but raised under Hellknight supervision. When he eventually came of age he was determined too wild and undisciplined to ever join the Hellknights, but was still considered a potentially useful weapon against chaos, given the right set of circumstances...

I'll add some meat to the bones later on, unless the DM shoots down the concept right away (and saves me the trouble! ;) ).

@stardust: you may want to look at the Extra Evolution Feat again - unless the DM rules otherwise it can only be taken once per 5 levels of Summoner.

Sigh, I just saw that.

Okay, I replaced one of them with Iron Will.

Gorsanthus no longer has the pincers, just claws on one pair of arms, and hands on the other.

Stardust - I'll take a deeper look at the backstory later. At the moment, I see that you updated the feat choice which is good. The other thing is that the minimum stat is 8 (after racial modifiers) so you'll need to adjust your ability array to bring the STR up from 7.

Hauke - Being a first time PbP player isn't an issue for me. If you can post pretty regularly being in Germany may be a little bit of an issue, but not a huge one. I'd encourage you to go ahead and apply if you're interested, just remember I'll be looking over the LG app with scrutiny =)

ProfPotts - You are welcome to apply, but remember that barbarians are rare and looked down upon in Cheliax. In addition, non-humans are looked down on at least slightly. That's a bit of a double whammy or discrimination, so it would be a very uphill battle to garner enough public support to be a hero of Cheliax. While I'll definitely still look at the application, I'd recommend perhaps going with fighter or something of the sort if you are interested in playing a high-STR melee character.

Liberty's Edge

Okay, Str modified to 8. Wisdom to 14. :)

The Exchange

Well, the concept is more 'Barbarian in name' rather than 'foreign Conan-esque dude' - he's not tribal so much as an angry young man... ;)

But yeah, a certain level of persecution is built into the backstory - he's aiming to end up with the demonic taint of the Abyssal bloodline after all!

As for the public-image... well, I was thinking he'd be portrayed more as 'a monster used for the good of the Empire' than as a paragon of Chelishness, but if that's an issue I'll go have another think...

I love Cheliax, and I got a character from another pbp that died before it started, he is a soldier, mind if I try and join this adventure?

Perfectly fine with me. Feel free to put in an application!

An outsider that takes up the Chelish banner is certainly acceptable, but should still be something that the citizens of Cheliax can get behind. I'm happy to read the application, but I think having TOO many "this would be persecuted" traits on one character may be a concern. Barbarian, non-human, and tainted by demons is a lot to look past in the same guy =P The PCs have to be a public group and so there is definitely a cap on the amount of chaotic-ness that the throne and the public can tolerate.

Here is a bard for consideration. I'll make an alias for her when I decide on a name and work on the background some more.

Non-human is certainly fine. As noted, Chelaxians are somewhat racist, but I think a non-human fighting openly to bring his homeland of Sargava back under Chelish rule could easily be a story that the people (and the government) could get behind. And it is a wonderful reason for someone to be held up as a poster child of Chelish strength and "rightness".

Well I present to you Decius Norfire =)

I'm still working on the equipment and such things but the background is up, basic stuff is there, just checking archetypes for fighter, I like the mounted idea but don't know how good it would be.

Setting stuff from the Inner Sea World Guide is fine as I've actually read that. Mechanics from any of those books might be okay if the rules are on the SRD. For other setting stuff just ask and I'll toss out a ruling. :)

Ok I'm stepping out of my idea box with a concept I've only dreamed about. A Teifling Inquisitor. Seems like one would really fit in with this particular campaign.

Yalla's Backstory:

Yalla was born into a rich family in Cheliax. He was the bastard son of the lady of the house and a demon who had made a bargain with her husband to grant him aid in battle. Both of the parents saw potential in the young spawn and decided to raise him. Though he was a monster in the eyes of many, his family loved him dearly. His father was a politician in the queen's court and a huge patriot. He raised Yalla to believe in queen and country. So he did. As soon as he was old enough, Yalla joined the courts and the temple. With a little family influence, he made it far. Soon he came to respect everything that the kingdom did as necessary and soon he began to hunt down those who didn't believe. Abadar was the most inspiring deity. Law and order were what the world need not goodness or wickedness. Both those views benefited only a small sum of people and created more conflict and help. Law was the only absolute and key to true peace. Yalla's demonic heritage started as a hindrance but was soon a sign of respect. When people saw this demon spawn walking the streets, they knew to be on their best behavior.
Yalla always had an intrest in religion and the planes. He saw many religious factions as enemies but when it came down to it, he was very curious to understand it. He would always assume he was studying the enemy but in reality, he was looking for his father. This did however aid his normal duties greatly so he had every reason to continue his studies.
So Yalla would venture out bravely to confront those that dared to disrupt the peace this great nation had obtained. Once the call for loyal individuals to aid the kingdom came through, Yalla felt it was his duty to answer the call. His appearance in court on that day was no surprise.

Ok I went ahead and included a statblock as well.

Didn't honestly think that would be an issue. Sorry

Ok, let's try this.

Marius' Story:

Marius is second son to the lesser noble family of the de la Sciapanti in Westcrown. As his father likes to remind him, it wasn't always this way. Back in the day when Westcrown was still capital, the de la Sciapantis commanded respect even from the greatest houses for their political acumen and military might. It all came to nothing when they sided with the wrong side in the struggles following the death of Aroden.

You wouldn't think so though from coming into the family's home. It looks like a museum, old and dusty. His father a pale figure, brooding on his council chair in the main hall. His mother long dead. His elder brother dabbling into forbidden magics. Marius and his twin sister seemingly the only people in the house ever to see the sun.

Marius and Flavia grew very close while growing up. They spent a lot of time in the streets of the city, whenever they could escape their mentors. They older they grew, they more they could see behind the facade build up by their father and the staff of house de la Sciapanti. They were noble only in name, with no power behind it. And there was no power to be gained in Westcrown, either, as it all flows from the Queen or the church.

This wasn't much of a problem for Marius. He delighted in his talent with sword and sorcery, relished the freedom given to him due to being overlooked by the powers that are. But it ate at his sister. She was not happy with her lot in life, did not want to marry another powerless old noble scion to raise powerless noble children in a forgotten town. She wanted to be at the heart of the empire, draw strings and move pawns.

When they heard that perhaps the empire might have a more than casual interest in dealing with the zombies in Gillamore, she didn't stop pestering her brother with it till he finaly strapped his sword and went out to do somehting about it.

Motivation:

Marius has no aims to topple the emire. He likes his life, being more or less able to do whatever he pleases, spending it with wine and women. He does take great pride in his ability with the sword and he loves his sister dearly.

And so it is her ambition that leads him into this adventure even though he will enjoy it nonetheless. And he will work towards their success, too.

He values family, honor, loyalty and even though he may not be thrilled by working with devils, he does enjoy the order they bring and thinks them very much the lesser evil. He does not bother to look behind the facade to perhaps have his opinion changed.

Looks:

Marius is a slender boy in his mid-twenties, although his black hair already starts to grey at the temples. Most think it adds a touch of elegance to him so he doesn't mind.

His hair is cut short, offering no distraction from his piercing blue eyes and his aquiline nose. He goes either clean shaven or with some stubble and strifes to wear the latest fashion.

Setting stuff from the Inner Sea World Guide is fine as I've actually read that. Mechanics from any of those books might be okay if the rules are on the SRD. For other setting stuff just ask and I'll toss out a ruling. :)

I hope that makes Dervish Dance ok, else I'll have to move a few things around.

I would like to throw my hat in the ring, with a Infernal-blooded sorcerer (who will take the Eldritch Heritage chain of feats to pick-up the powers from the Rakshasa bloodline)

Raven Hawthorne, LN Human (Chelish/Vudrani) Sorcerer 1

Appearance:

Raven is lean and lightly muscled, with pale skin, short-cropped black with a pronounced widow’s peak, and piercing blue eyes. He usually dresses in a gorgeously tailored Courtier's Outfit, with a single visible rapier at his hip. Generally, he moves with almost feline grace, and continually shifts his gaze, trying to take in everything around him.

Background:

Raven knows relatively little about his parents, as he has no memory of them. From what he has been told, his mother was a relatively pretty lass from one of the minor noble families at the Imperial court in Egorian, who caught the eye of a Vudrani diplomat; when it was discovered that she was pregnant, she was bundled off to Westcrown for her confinement, to stay with some distant relatives (by marriage) who had a small estate there, and made a modest living by running a series of theaters. After the birth, she returned to Egorian, but Raven remained in Westcrown.

He grew-up in Westcrown, where he was treated fairly, albeit without any love – the branch of the family to which he was assigned had no time to coddle the bastard son of a distant relative. However, they did not stint in his education, and he was raised alongside the other scions of the house; although not naturally inclined to book-learning, he was instilled with the importance of recognising conflicts that one could not win, whether in business, politics or war, and how to avoid them.

He became adept at spotting weaknesses, and how to exploit them, and discovered that he had a knack for noticing things that others generally missed, and had a way with people; he had a knack for reading people's minds, and convincing them to... do... things. In time, he gravitated towards assisting with some of the family’s more clandestine activities.

It was after one such task went wildly wrong, and an innocent bystander was badly hurt (It was supposed to be a simple task of sabotage, embarrassing a rival, no more; after all, generally, you would expect that people would move out of the way of an out-of-control cart of beer barrels, wouldn’t you?), that Raven decided he needed to ‘spread his wings’ and find a new stomping ground. He had heard of the recent push by the Queen to recruit bands of adventurers, and decided that joining-up would be an excellent way to put some distance between himself and his immediate ‘problem'...

...of course, at the back of his mind, there is always the niggling desire to find the family that decided that he was too much of an embarrassment to acknowledge; not to kill them, but to crush them politically beneath the heel of the scion that they turned their back on. To that end, of course, he will need to accumulate as much political capital as he can...

His 'crunch' is accessible on his page.

Let me know what you think :-)

it never was an issue, no need to apologize lol, I was just funny to see it, I have herolab also =)

To late to edit first post anymore. Will post changes when I find errors or change my opinion on stuff here. Profile will always be up to date.

delta 1:

added bonus languages (infernal, draconic, elven)
added human bonus skill (perception)
changed strength and constitution
added some travelling gear

Shanosuke - I think you are missing a third trait and it should come from the Chelish traits in Cheliax, Empire of Devils.

Marius - Dervish Dance is perfectly fine.

Deiros - There will be a lot fighting that takes place in traditional dungeons, monster holes, forests, and such. While there will be a lot of overland travel as well, focusing on mounted stuff may not be the best call since a lot of the "tougher" fights are likely to be in places that will be difficult to bring a mount to.

Notes to everyone:

Lucrezia Villanova (bard) is one of the two reserved slots, so feel free to use that knowledge however you like.

Also, I'd love to see some cleric (or to a lesser extent oracle) applications. And more arcane full casters wouldn't be bad. I do like the idea of general purpose melee (especially rogues) as hitters and such, so don't shy away from putting them in, but I didn't think people would need specific encouragement to do so =P

Hello I have never played in a Play by Post game before. DM Morvius, your premise for a game sounds interesting, and i have always thought Cheliax would be a place with adventures lurking dark alley ways and underground wine cellars.

I mainly post as Elyas Ravenwood

My character Iago Isildur, is a Pathfinder Society Organized Play character and i have gotten him up to 5th level. Not wanting to let good materiel go to waste ( waste not want not) i thought this character might be a good fit for your campaign, so I put him back down to 1st level.

So I would like to apply.

Here is Iago

Appearance:

Iago has black eyes and longish black hair, which when pulled back, shows the beginings of a widow's peak. His black which contrasts with his pale skin. when he travels, he wears his black scale male and shield, with a black cloak and a heavy black mace at his side. when not traveling he usually dons his clerical robes (sever black with red trim) for official religious observances, or he dresses as a moderately successful barrister, when he is practicing law.

Background

Spoiler:

Iago Isildur grew up in the lap of luxury in Cheliax. His family House Isildur was fairly powerful, neither the most powerful nor the least but powerful. Iagos's uncle Mirrax Isildur controlled the house seat. The house had vast tracks of land and various businesses under ownership. However the most lucrative enterprise of House Isildur was given to Iago’s father Diago Isildur to run. Diago ran a trading house with offices in Katapesh, Absolom, Korvosa, the Nidalese capital of Nisrosh, and the Chelaxian cities of Corentym, Westcrown, Ostenso, and the capitol Egoran. The trading house specialized in magical spell components for conjuring, summoning and Necromancy. It was extraordinarily lucrative.
His brother Mirrax sent Diago, to personally over see the trading houses offices in Katapesh. Katapesh was the source of most of the spell components. Anything was available and legal for trade there. Diago ever the political animal, saw that Asmodeus wasn’t the dominant faith in Katapesh, but Abadar was. He joined a congregation of Abadar for the business connections, and he had his son Iago become educated in the Abadaran faith and to become an altar boy. He expected this would help him with his business contacts. It did. There were more deals and much more profit.
Daigo longed for his home in the capitol Egoren in Cheliax. One day he got his wish. Mirrax foolishly made a mistake. Mirrax made a deal with a Devil lord. He exchanged his soul, and the souls of his wife and children for immortality. The devil accepted. Immortality doesn’t mean indestructibility. The Devil had some of his imps, lock the manor house, and set it afire. Mirrax and his family perished, their immortality short lived.
Diago being next in line inherited the house seat. He was elated. This meant wealth power and a return to civilization, a return to Cheliax to Egoran. Diago moved his family back from Katapesh to Egoran. Diago then began grooming his first son to succeed him, and his second son, Iago, he sent into the church of Asmodeus.
Iago with his initial training in the church of Abadar, did quite well in the church of Asmodeus. He was unfortunately a bit too lawful and neutral for his superiors and colleagues taste. They decided to give Iago an assignment to get him out of their hair. they sent him to absolom to join the pathfinders.

After a year of going to interesting places and exploring tombs, Much to Iago’s surpise, he was recalled to cheliax

I apologize for dumping so much materiel in your lap, but once i got started, before i knew it, it was done.

Is there anything i should know about playing Play by post? how is it different from a table top game?

thanks

Just want to throw my hat in the ring, I have only just started looking at the recent recruitment threads but your campaign sounds like a lot of fun.

I'm currently considering a couple character ideas and will probably have a profile for 1 or both of them up later tonight.

My first idea would be to play a Master Summoner devoted to Asmodeus, he would more than likely be neutral or neutral evil but would work well with others. (However it seems that the summoner angle may be well filled already, but I think the master summoner plays differently enough that it could find a place alongside the more traditional summoner type.)

And if it's more full arcane casters you're after, I think this campaign would lend itself quite well to playing a Witch and I think I would have great fun doing so if the summoner might step on too many toes.

Any thoughts on how either of these would fit into the group/campaign would be appreciated. I have good ideas for the character development of both and would love to play either so I'm just looking for thoughts on what would be preferable on your end.

Thanks!

Scarab Sages

I'm just a friend of DM Morvius, and don't take this as a "if you post this he'll certainly take it", but there are a few things I've noticed.

First, I'm surprised that there aren't any wizard applications. I realize that Summoners and Magus are the new hotness, but Cheliax does have an exceptionally respected school of magic (The Egorian Academy of the Magical Arts), and even a subschool for Conjuration associated with it. Infernal Binder

I'm also surprised at the lack of Clerics (of any lawful diety). It seems the perfect game to play one in.

As to applying with a class that someone already has applied with, I'd suggest go for it. I'd also suggest that if you have multiple ideas that you like, feel free to apply with all of them. I don't think DM Morvius will mind. A little competition never hurt anyone and people might get ideas from each other (for this game or for others).

Iago - A cleric with a wisdom of 14 seems like a bad call. While I'm definitely not requiring super optimized builds, as I mentioned this campaign will be a bit tough mechanically so for you (and everyone actually) remember that fitting the story is key, but I'm also reviewing the mechanics to keep a strong group.

Note to all:

Aptinuviel is correct. Taking Chelish strengths (like the wizard academy) into account or the religious tolerance to be a cleric of any lawful god (Asmodeus or otherwise) wins points with me. And keep applications coming. It doesn't matter if someone has applied for it and multiple applications from one person are perfectly fine as well.

Alright I got a cleric of Iomedae; LN

Spoiler:

Originally from Cheliax, the Good Belwas had been forced out of the city when he helped the wrong man, a Scarzni criminal. He never knew who exactly the man was, but the criminal had made enemies of the Scarzni family and two weeks later the man was found dead in the river and the Lark's received a message telling Belwas that he should leave. He took the matter to the authorities and their advice was to leave. He did taking his family west to Kintagro, the home of his cousin, deputy Rupert. They found a small shack on the outskirts of the town, and kept it clean despite rarely staying home for long.

Azula and her husband have invested many years teaching their children to understand the ways of honor, truth and justice. Most of the teaching took place on the travels around the villages and homesteads of Kintagro as they worked as preachers and healers. Belwas was a fine apothecary so their wagon was always welcomed with open arms by the outlying communities. They would stay, help the locals and tend their all-shrines providing a service for all faiths that Iomedae approved of.

Respected for their work, though not particularly well liked or befriended thanks to the humorless and spartan beliefs in duty and hard work, the Larks made no bones about the tithes they paid to the Church in Cheliax.

In return for this payment, the Circle of Iomedae and the Sword Knight Captain Cromwell, agreed to take Kendall in as a squire and prospective Knight candidate. So on his tenth birthday, he made the journey back to the city and took up residence in the old church to Aroden.

Over the next seven years, Kendall slowly came to love and believe deeply in his faith, its tenets and code made life much simpler. The days were ordered and organized into periods of early exercise, morning cleaning, afternoon teachings and training followed by evening prayers and sleep. Kendall fitted in well, meaning he did not have to think too hard for himself, everything was simple. Gradually the Circle of Sword Knights and their teachers realized that his strength and skill at arms far outstripped her abilities in other directions, she could make a fine knight- brave, heroic even and committed to the faith of Iomedae.

Kendall dutifully hid the pain of missing his family and childhood at home so that the letters to his parents and occasional presents to his brother and sister seemed all the more austere and practical. In return, Belwas and Azula wrote of their pride in his work and the hope he would eventually make good as a knight.

Then five years ago, he received a shocking letter from his mother, her father had been murdered in Kintagro one night. Cut up and left by a man dubbed the White Fawn. The seventeen year old boy returned home on a leave of absence at the insistence of his mentor, Captain Cromwell, told to help bring the White Fawn to justice. Kendall tried to comfort his mother and siblings but he found that much harder to deal with than helping his cousin, deputy Rupert. When the White Fawn was captured, tried and convicted, Rupert became a hero of Kintagro. Kendall sat through every day of the trial and he approved of the just result, the end of the crazed artisan.

The whole affair left Kendall far more grown up and serious. When his family showed signs of recovery, his mother taking up the reins of healing and preaching from the family wagon, then the Squire of Iomedae returned to Cheliax.

Her battle prowess gradually took over his days, he was tested as part of the city guard and the reports showed Kendall understood law and Justice well but had much less regard for fairness and somewhat cruel. If a rich man or a beggar transgressed it made little difference to him. This manifested as a lack of certain priestly magicks, that only the blessed of Iomedae received, perhaps showing that he was a righteous warrior first and foremost.

A week or two back, Kendall was ordained as a holy warrior, the least sword knight of the Circle of Cheliax, and that day was marked by a field of sword-shaped shooting stars crossing over during his lonely night's vigil. Even his captain Cromwell felt the signs were good for Kendall's future as a knight.

During the vigil, Kendall dream of the holy sword, Crimson Edge, and that his goddess hoped he would find it.

On the following morning, a bright and shiny day dawned with a new Sword Knight ordained and Kendall Lark took the title of Myrmidon or soldier of the knights. Her first work was decided by the perplexing lack of news and tithe from Kintagro. Captain Cromwell ordered him to take a Leave of Absence of six weeks, keep him informed of her sojourn and act with honor and for the glory of his Circle meanwhile.

He also introduced Kendall to a traveling companion, a dwarf of Torag called Rurik Stonehammer, who was on his own personal mission to Kintagro.

The Prayer Book of Guiding Truths
This is Kendall's most important possession given to him by his captain on his induction as a squire and her bible. The book is filled with right-minded, hard-working, helpful and helped examples for the faithful to provide food for the soul.

I did consider an Infernal Binder first, but since I had never played a Summoner, I thought this would be a good time to try it out. I've played two wizards before, A Diviner, and A Generalist. (I played the Generalist specifically because others said the Generalist is unplayable.)

Edit: I'll go ahead and submit an Infernal Binder too. But I think right now I would prefer to 'win' with my summoner.

Liberty's Edge

As a second option to Antonius, here is Bealzius Cremnor, Conjurer of House Leroung. With a stringent focus on his academic studies, Bealzius's second priority is the political prominence of his family.

Traits:

Theoretical Magician, Gifted Adept summon monster I, Rich Parents.

He has spent most of his time working as a librarian within the Egorian Academy, but even this he is not successful at since his instructors say that he lacks the attention span and patience.

Bealzius is 24 years old.

I'm looking to submit a backstory for consideration. My idea is a bit out there but I think it could work and would be interesting given the story you are looking to tell. Would you like a character build done for this as well? I only ask as I usually flesh out the mechanics once accepted but some DM's like to see it up front.

Hafdan Jelspar:
Human Rogue/Fighter eventually leading to Red Mantis Assassin PrC from the Inner Sea Campaign guide.

News had spread to those who knew where to listen, that Cheliax was designing plans to retake their former colony of Sargava. The proclamation was attracting nationalists from every corner of Cheliax, and some nations beyond. It also attracted the attention of the Red Mantis and one of it's Cheliaxian operatives Hafdan Jelspar.

The current situation in the weakened Sargavan region was stable, as much as anything could be in this world. Certainly Cheliax's abandonment of the colony had helped the balance of power in the area. But a reclaimed and unified colony with the full might of the Hell-bound empire behind it, so close to Mediogalti itself, this bore watching.

Hafdan received word that he was to infiltrate the planned excursion and keep tabs on the flow of events. As all Mantis agents were taught, he knew he wasn't there to prevent anything from happening. In fact, like some of his superiors, he happened to agree with the idea that the retaken colony would be a strong asset to the Red Mantis. He would accompany the mission and help ensure it's success. He would ensure that the Red Mantis had their place in this newly reclaimed land.

Stardust - I'm not suggesting that people should apply for a character that they won't enjoy. Feel free to submit whatever apps you like and I'm happy to get multiples with your note about which one you'd prefer. Just suggesting that there are a few sets of classes and character connections that I'd look especially favorably on at this point.

Jonasty - PCs won't begin with the knowledge that Sargava is going to be their end goal. There will be the collection of groups to fight for the throne or more specifically to quell specific, but well known issues in Cheliax and its territories, but the Queen is initially keeping her final target hidden. That said, I wouldn't mind a Red Mantis Assassin, but as the story is about those that are working for Cheliax, it should be a character that openly supports the nation. Finding a place for the Red Mantis as an organization is a fine goal, but it should be a story about "I'm a supporter of Cheliax that happens to be a Red Mantis" as opposed to "I'm a Red Mantis that works with Chelish goals behind the scenes". Given that Achaekek lives in Hell however, I don't think it's much of a stretch to go with the former and take steps to create a strong alliance between the Red Mantis and Cheliax - as long as the PC is willing to at least openly claim to support Asmodeus first and Achaekek as his subordinate. On the mechanics note, yes, I would definitely like to see mechanics with any submission.

Otm-Shank - You are certainly welcome to submit both if you are interested and I'll look them over. My thinking would be that if you want to go full arcane caster (especially Int based) you'll fit the theme of Cheliax more as a wizard than a witch, but I'll certainly read through a witch application. Master Summoner is less likely to wow me, but a really solid application could certainly still make the cut.
