After the woman behind the bar had told him what had happened only minutes before he came downstairs, Leokian was alarmed, thinking that Shalelu and Ameiko were near death or dying. He rushed to the old woman Koya's house and found that the woman at the Rusty Dragon had exaggerated by some measure. Both Shalelu and Ameiko were stable and would recover without difficulty.

He also found Koya's house full of concerned people. The crowding and commotion were not helping either the healer or those in her care, so Leokian decided to wait. Shalelu was conscious so He gave her his greeting and best wishes then departed. He would see her when she was ready.

The next morning, after his typical wash, dressing, and spell preparation, Leokian descended that stairs and ordered tea. He would wait here at the inn for Shalelu. He doubted she had stayed at Koya's house and that meant she should be here.

As he sat two thoughts occupied his mind.

It seems Shalelu was lucky yesterday. She has often been lucky when tangling with the goblins in the area, but there will come a time when she is not. If she will not stop this patrolling of hers, then she needs to change the way she does it so to make it more secure for herself. I will have to be careful how I broach he subject though, she is always stiff-necked about her causes

The burns both Shalelu and Ameiko suffered seem odd for an encounter with goblins. Yes, they do have a love of fire, but it would be strange for them to be wandering about with a source of flame. Torches would not likely cause such serious burns, and I have not heard of goblins having the ability to harness magic to that effect. Possible but strange. I will have to find out more.

So here's a question for you all. I'd like to have a language to serve as elven, but I don't want to go to the trouble of making something up. Google translate seems like a good way to go but what language would be more fitting do you think?

I figure it should be as free of english cognates and borrowings as possible. I could also go for something that has a nice looking non-latin alphabet but is completely unreadable (I'll assume) :)

Alright I got my skills in order.

Background Skills include Handle Animal and Profession (Stablemaster), since he works as the Rusty Dragon's stablemaster.

Also, I gave him Knowledge (Local) to replace Handle Animal since that was into his background skills.

I might later on get him Lore (Knights and Samurais) later on along with Artistry (Poetry) to round him out when he hits level 2. But I'll have to think about it.

And if I get out of hand rping, let me know.

Trying to make Derric like the main character from 47 Ronin. You know the one that starred Keanu Reeves. Haven't seen it yet except for clips. Hope to see it soon.

He's supposed to be a mixture of the ideals and traits of both knights and samurais. This is why I picked Order of the Shield instead of the Order of the Warrior or the Ronin when I created Derric. I thought about the Order of the Dragon, but the Order of the Shield felt better suited for him.

BTW, do y'all have any suggestions for my character? Since I'm the tank and face of the group, I was thinking of picking up the armor master fighter archetype to give me some increased defenses and mobility.

Doing that will slow up your Samurai progression. Shame the Emissary archetype for Cavalier won't work.

As for extra defenses, at 3rd level, I'll start helping with that!

Actually a friend of mine suggested that I do a reach build samurai instead of a sword and shield build samurai. That'll help me out in protecting the rest of you as it'll increase the area of my stand still feat I get from my order.

I'm really enjoying the campaign so far. Jade Regent is actually the AP that got me hooked on Pathfinder in the first place, so it is one of my favorites. So I'm a bit enthusiastic about this adventure.

No problem Derric. I'm not much of an optimizer but I like guides for the view they give of classes by someone who's surely more aware of what the class is capable of than I am.

I read through the samurai guide a bit and these were the things that came to mind.

1. You have a mount so you should probably think about how it fits into your plans for developing a combat style.

2. Reach weapons can be very good but they are niggly in some ways too. For example, it's easy for an enemy to simply 5' step inside your threat range. if you threaten at 10' with a reach weapon you don't threaten with it at 5'. So you'll have to decide how to dal with that. Otherwise you wind up in a constant dance where you have to step back to attack each term and enemy's can push you around the battlefield.

One easy thing is to simply wear a spiked gauntlet. But then you've fighting with it instead of your reach weapon. You can also take the Pin Down feat to prevent 5' steps. But you don't get all that many feats to work with so it might not be worth it unless you really want to concentrate on reach weapons.

Another thing is that while reach weapons can be great for combat maneuvers like trip, they are feat intensive to make them work. Again, you don't have lots of spare feats like a fighter. Also combat maneuvers become less effective at higher levels.

You could use a reach weapon to start, then drop it and quick draw (I think you get it for free) a weapon when the enemy closes. This is a cheap way to do things. I took a look at samurai and they get Weapon Expertise, which gives Quick Draw with a chosen weapon.

3. Your strength is not particularly high for a PC who isn't using weapon finesse. This will cut down on the damage you do and you attack successes. You dexterity isn't super high either. That's not big problem, but there are certain things you should NOT do. Don't two-weapon fight, you can't afford the attack penalties. Don't take weapon finesse, more feats for no advantage. My half-educated suggestion would be to not use a shield and go with Katana using it it two-handed. You fighting two-handed with Power Attack and Furious Focus will help your damage immensely. You have a good DEX so that compensates for the lack of shield a bit. Go with the heaviest armor available.

There is a Style Feat Chain that could help with this as well. Swordplay Style

It looks like it would work to let you increase your defenses while not sacrificing much in attack penalties. I don't know how well it works in practice though, it's new.

If you look at the other style feat chains on the page you'll notice that there is actually a Kitsune Style, it centers around dirty tricks, which are about the best of the combat maneuvers. But that might not mesh too well with a samurai concept.

Oh wow! Thanks for the advice! These some great suggestions.

A friend of mine suggested I use Pushing Assault with a reach weapon to make it difficult for foes to move past me. And he did say that it's quite funny shoving your enemies around.

But yeah I'll probably start out with a reach weapon, and use it with a mount but use the katana two handed with the quick draw. And since I do get some bonus feats at certain levels this'll help me out a great deal. My friend did mention that I should put some points into CON to help boost my hit points, as well as take toughness since I'm the tank of the group. A buckler helps me out in giving me a couple of points to AC. I'll have to take persuasive feat to really help out as the face of the group.

Both the swordplay and kitsune styles are both useful actually and I could take both if I wanted to I guess, starting off with swordplay and once he is exposed to other kitsunes I'll start taking kitsune style feats. So he'll be a chivalrous and knightly samurai when the situation calls for it but he'll embrace his kitsune side as well.

Now this is just opinion, but being the tank is tough with a reach weapon IMHO. Let's say we're in a 5' passage, or a doorway, and you're going to hold the line. The bad guys get right up on you. Now you can't hit them without stepping back and letting them flood in on us.

However, in an open field battle, you can use either, especially mounted, but use a lance for the charge damage.

Good points! I'll probably use a buckler and hold a katana with two hands and save a naginata for when I'm mounted. And yeah that makes sense to use a lance for charge damage.

Sorry guys weekends are usually not a good time for me to jump on and post. I do appologize as this weekend was extra crazy what with trying to find a place to move into, getting new furnature for the existing house, and dealing with family issues.

I am always available Monday-Thursday from 10-4 CST. I keep paizo taps up and open on my work computer and refresh every 5 min or so unless busy. I will get an in game post up shortly to get things moving along a bit.

Again sorry for rushing the post. I figured that since Derric's father is a merchant, he would have seen his father selling some fireworks to nobles and towns before, but other than that and the basic understanding, Derric wouldn't know how they were made or what powder is used in them or anything of that nature. He only knows that they're loud, beautiful, and be quite dangerous if used improperly!

And it's supposed to be blow my home up! Again I rushed there, so I wasn't able to doublecheck my grammar. Also, Derric is trying to earn a kind word from Ameiko. He's trying to act brave and all for her and to ensure her that someone is willing to do something about these goblins, if the town militia and other city-states aren't going to do anything about it.


Hey guys just want to give you a heads up that I'm going out of town this weekend. My wife and I are going to go see my parents who we haven't seen since xmas. My parents are in their 60's and while my brother lives with them I still like to check in with them from time to time. Living 4 hours away sucks when they start to get older and more careless.

Its a 4 hour drive one way so I'm hoping Pirates Prophecy will be out on Audible by then...My wife and I are hooked on that pathfinder tales line of tales.
