Oh, and Derric the quick and dirty on background skills is this:
You get 2 points per level that can be applied to the following skills
Appraise
Artistry
Craft
Handle Animal
Knowledge (engineering)
Knowledge (geography)
Knowledge (history)
Knowledge (nobility)
Linguistics
Lore
Perform
Profession
Sleight of Hand
This represents skills that the character has picked up outside of their life as adventurers. Earlier careers, interests, hobbies, etc.
I like the change since it means that many of the classes with very few skill points can flesh themselves out a bit and not spend every single point on the life or death essentials.

Was going for my Ph.D. in Math, got married, decided to grab my Masters and get into the workforce.
So I have a BS and an MS in Mathematics myself.
Any idea what field you intend to do your grad work? Understandable if you don't know yet. I certainly didn't when I first started grad school.
DM Mathpro
Not sure...I know I don't really like algebra or topology lol. I mean...group theory was okay and I've never studied ring or field theory and galois theory sounds interesting but again never studied it but...I don't like all the proofs in group theory. And all I remember from group theory is the take home final that took 60 hours to complete and isomorphic being key(6/10 proofs were "prove x is isoporphic to y and that x and y form a group).
I just hope I can study the hiney-borel theorem with out giggling like a school girl at the name lol.
Shaeda Stormborn
Please, it can't be as bad as using terms like latus rectum and such.
Ironically, I did my Master's project in Algebraic-Topology. Don't worry, I'm not offended that you dislike my fields.
I enjoyed Algebra in undergrad, but had no Topology in undergrad.
Groups, Rings, Fields, Manifolds, Tensors, etc.
Are you more of a practical mathematician then?
I don't use my degree much at all though, but many people don't.
Derric
Well handle animal is a class and necessary skill for samurai though.
I can see Derric taking Profession (Stablemaster) and Lore (Knights and Samurais) but I'm not sure if that counts as two lore ranks.
But I'll give the background skills a try.
And I'm okay with Derric being the face of the party just don't expect him to use his change shape ability. He doesn't like to use that ability as it is discomforting to him. You have to remember that if he was raised by kitsune he would be okay using this ability. But he was raised by humans who taught him to be true to himself so that ability is a bit odd to him.

Rectum? Damned near killed him.

I expect Kitsune come in two flavors: those that shape change a lot, and those that don't. Would we even know he's a Kitsune at this point?
Derric
Most likely. Since many Varisians travel to and from the Dragon Empires they would have undoubtedly met and even spread word about the nonhuman races of the Dragon Empires. In addition, Derric's adopted father has even visited there although he hasn't been ever since he adopted Derric mostly as he feared that some distant kitsune relatives would take away his adopted son. It was a selfish reason and one in which Doritin regrets but Derric upon being told this was not angry at his adopted father saying that he would gladly give up growing up as a true kitsune in order to be his son. Derric is close to his adopted parents something that Ameiko was envious of. Derric could tell from how things were for her. He even sneaked her into his home a few times when things got bad for her with her father.
Derric is very close to Ameiko. Now let's see...he would call Koya Lady Koya out of respect and admiration although she wouldn't like it she wouldn't tell him to stop just that he didn't really have to call her that.
Sandru and him would be friends but not close friends. Derric felt a bit jealous towards him for running off with Ameiko on some crazy adventure although he respects the Varisian man after realizing that something bad had happened to Ameiko and Sandru. Derric suspects it wasn't good but he refuses to ply into their business letting them be the ones who tell what happened that caused the two to quit adventuring.
Shalelu and Derric would get along after being introduced to each other by Ameiko. He would respect her. But like Sandru the two wouldn't be close friends.

Sorry for the double post here, but GM I was wondering what you wanted to do in turns of Ameiko's age as well as the idea of the mount traits for Blaze, Derric's horse?

What I love about math is you get this huge complicated mess that looks unmanagable and you can clean it up to be x=2. So I'm thinking of going more applied(practical) than pure but...I don't know when I've tried applied math, specifically physics, in the past it always turns into a disaster lol. Can't I just sit and play with equations all day without that playing having implications to anything lol.

Sorry for the double post here, but GM I was wondering what you wanted to do in turns of Ameiko's age as well as the idea of the mount traits for Blaze, Derric's horse?
You can take the mixed breed for the horse and I will house rule that the trains affect the horse and not the rider. I also liked your compromise to meet in the middle of the two breeds. And Ameiko is about 22 if I remember right.
Derric
Lol! I'm actually surprised as well! Since Kitsunes according to Japanese folklore, enjoyed disguising themselves as women. Lol!
And thank you GM! I knew that if it was a crossbreed, it would meet in the middle of the two breeds. Also, Blaze is trained to attack all creatures, so she can attack undead, aberrations, and fiends if need be. Just to let y'all know.
I'm still unsure about the background skills. Since Handle Animal is considered a background skill, would the two points I get for having background skills apply to that skill or not? I also know that it would give me another normal skill point but again I'm still a bit confused by the background skill rules. I'm still going to try them though.

So Rhis is a sylph correct? Just wanting to make sure I don't write down in a post the wrong race for her.
Rhis Alberuti
"I'm a what-now?"
Seriously though, Rhis would tell you she's human as human can be and doesn't know what the hell a 'Sylph' is beyond some distant folklore from Abendego.
She certainly doesn't look it, in any case, so getting it wrong would be completely in-character (with the exception of maybe Leokian once he funnels enough points into Knowledge: Planes or something).
Are you guys aware of Shaeda's position at the Pixies Kitten?
Sure. Rhis doesn't much care what people do with themselves. Free will and all that.
And if so are any of you clients of hers(not judgement here)?
Eh. Unlikely. Your archer doesn't like paying for the privilege. She certainly has nothing against courtesans and their profession, but she'd rather buy them drinks and listen to them chatter about their clientele. Far more entertaining.
Shaeda Stormborn
Despite having been born near Abendengo, Shaeda has no reason to suspect Rhis is anything but human. I don't have any of the knowledge skills to see through that! Nor do I intend to.
Leokian Trasandoral
Leokian wouldn't know anything about Shaeda since it's very unlikely they've ever met. If he did know it would hardly be worth a shrug from him. He's down with Callistria though not a worshipper.
Derric would be a standout in town so Leokian may have seen him before and remember that, but otherwise nothing else.
Rhis would be the best bet for someone he would be familiar with since she is a RD regular. Shalelu stays there when in town so Leolian would too since the only reason he's ever been to Sandpoint is to visit her.
Actually I guess it;s possible he would have met Caerwyn since they are linked the Shalelu. She could have introduced the at some point.
Rhis Alberuti
I like to think Rhis remembers everyone she meets...and just purposely 'forgets' people as and when it suits her. She forgets things a lot.
Not to step on Mathpro's toes here, but I imagine that check would involve a mix of Knowledge Local and Planes to 100% nail her race (otherwise she's just a weird Human, or an unorthadox Outsider). Something like that I guess.
On that note, going back to Shaeda's earlier question: y'all have one person with Darkvision. I'm also tempted to give her the Sleepy drawback and jam in another trait (maybe Wind-Carried Voices?)--because she really does just nap wherever, and what's another quirk in the mix?
Shaeda Stormborn
A Sylph is an Outsider with the native subtype. As such, it should be Knowledge(planes).
Kitsune are humanoids, with both the Kitsune and shapechanger subtypes, so that is Knowledge(local).
Shaeda Stormborn
Whilst true, Rhis is counted as both Humanoid (Human) and Native, so both would apply in their own ways I guess.
Oh, oh, oh! You took Mostly Human?!
Shaeda Stormborn
I will also caveat with, Shaeda is not kitted out to adventure. No backpack, bedroll, etc. so hopefully there's time in the AP's track for getting the basics. I figured that she wouldn't have that stuff, while practicing her "trade."
Rhis Alberuti
Ah, fair point Shaeda; I'm personally not against Background Skills--Rhis certainly wouldn't go amiss to learn a handful of languages during the course of the adventure. Seems like the kind of thing she'd do, listening to people gnatter on between naps.
Gear-wise, Rhis has her own excuses for being ready to bolt at a moment's notice. Desnans, eh?
Shaeda Stormborn
Thats fine. You guys will be heading out rather quickly but there will be a little time to make necessary purchases.
If not, she could just hot bunk with someone.
Shaeda Stormborn
It effectively just gives 2 extra skill ranks per level. That's assuming most people were going to have some points in the background skills anyways, and I was. Profession(courtesan) for example.
Derric
Well Derric wouldn't go to any courtesans but he's not going to judge anyone who is.
And I'm at work but I could do a quick post until I get off for my break.
Still not sure how I'm going to do background skills. But I can figure that out with yalls help. Not a huge problem I think if we start the adventure while we figure it out.
Shaeda Stormborn
Still not sure how I'm going to do background skills. But I can figure that out with yalls help. Not a huge problem I think if we start the adventure while we figure it out.
Simply take 2 extra skill points per level, and make sure you have at least 2 points per level in the Background Skills listed here.
Derric
Ah cool. I'm just surprised that they made handle animal a background skill. But anyhow I'll fix up my skills tomorrow before work as I'm at work now and don't have access to my laptop at the moment.
And thanks for the help y'all!
Rhis Alberuti
Aye; that and the Perform skills sort of surprised me, honestly. Background Skills make Bards pretty spare on ranks as a result. Rhis being able to speak Varisian makes me so much happier.
That said, first post up. If it wasn't obvious, I can get a little flamboyant with my posts so, y'know, just tell me to cut it out if it gets too much or something.
