"Would we not just follow the elemental in and make sure any ruckus is quite short. They may just be an expendable alarm, so the combat noise will warn nearby foes of strength. Then the elemental plan helps us little."
DM Harpwizard |
A hulking, roughly humanoid creature of dirt and stone explodes up from the gem, faceless save for two glowing gemstone eyes. It moves through the doorway into the torture chamber and begins destroying the hiddoues lemure devils.
. . . A few minutes later, the chamber is quiet again as guts, blood, and pieces of fatty flesh are strewn about the room.

This large room is lit by six guttering torches set in sconces affixed to an iron railing that surrounds a five-foot=high walkway around the circumference of the room. Short flights of stairs near the room's entrance lead up to the walkway, and the walls of the room consist of five-foot-wide cells, each sealed with an iron barred door and fitted with a nasty heap of straw that seems to be pulling double duty as bedding and toilet.
The central region of the room is a well-stocked torture chamber. Chains and ropes hang from a tangle of pulley's and hooks set in the ceiling, some ending in manacles and others in clamps or cruel hooks of their own. A rack, an iron maiden, and a metal of some sort round out the chamber's morbid furnishings. All of the walls and furnishings are splattered with shreds of flesh from the mutilated lemure devils.
Where do you wish to sneak to, Bofus? Where are you looking specifically?

I see what you did there. "Double doody/toilet" hahaha
Where do you wish to sneak to, Bofus? Where are you looking specifically?
Bofus starts checking out the straw piles--from the safety of outside the cells, of course--in case there's anything of interest hidden, or hiding, therein

You cannot see where the voice comes from, but it echoes around this chamber with a terrifying abyssal accent.
"I see you have decorated the place for me. The lemures may not have lasted long with your earth creature, but I think it is time to cover their filth with halfling blood around this chamber."

It may seem like a lot of damage. We just had a Magus in another campaign dish out 507 hp damage in one round. Only 15 level. Good think all the classes are balanced.
DM Harpwizard |
Gentlemen, It is difficult to see this on a two dimensional map, but the Bone Devil is flying and is striking down at Bofus with a 10 foot reach. Please note that Bofus has already climbed the stairs to a balcony level. The balcony level is ten feet higher than ground level and is colored the typical dreary gray. The ground level is a redder color on my map. So you are standing on ground level with an altitude of the 0-5 feet squares, and the Bone Devil occupies the 20-30 feet high squres. You will need longer reaching weapons and/or some means to fly. The other alternative is to climb up to the balcony and use a 10 foot reach weapon. When attacking, please clarify what weapon you are attacking with and its reach if it is not obvious.
Rebel Red |
Ahh gotcha, as you say - hard in 2d :)
In that case I might retcon for some archery... this round it would have involved running up and getting on the N6 square (still holding a sword) in prep for archery.
Tirion Jörðhár |
Actually, in that case, Tirion will move down the passage 20' and begin casting Enlarge Person.
Who wants to reach up and slap devil boy.
1 Round casting time. Don't have to choose a target until he finishes casting - next round.
Tomkin the Doughty |
Tom has ten foot reach and fifteen foot reach if he needs it with -2 AC penalty--put him in K9
Seeing the creature flying, the dog blinks to the spot in the balcony he can see.
Tom will lunge if he needs too. 10' reach with glaive, 15' if needed at -2 AC penalty

Round 1
The devil turns immediately toward Tomkin and with a five foot step delivers a full round attack on the halfling.
Bite: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20 HIT!
Damage: 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11
Its toothy maw chomps down tearing into the flesh of the halfling.
Claw: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (18) + 14 = 32 HIT!
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10
Claw: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (15) + 14 = 29 HIT!
Damage: 1d6 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 5 = 8
Both of its claws rake across the halfling.
Stinger: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (6) + 14 = 20 Miss!
Damage: 3d4 + 5 ⇒ (3, 2, 2) + 5 = 12
Its deadly poisonous stinger narrowly misses the paladin.
After its attack, the Bone devil immediately turns invisible (quickened spell like ability at will) and vanishes from sight.

Lorth's initiative was actually rolled in the first post (he got a 3), he just wasn't added to the initiative train then. It's either amusing or depressing that the reroll was actually worse than the first roll...
With little that he can do to act against the devil, Lorth withdraws into a defensive turtle stance.

• Tirion casts enlarge on Mirrin. He then casts Glitterdust centered at M9/N10. Tirion, you have a 10 foot radius spread. I have the squares noted. Kindly tell me what height you wish to release the spread. Centered at 10, 20, 30, or 40 feet?
• Tomkin
• Devil
Tirion Jörðhár |
It will be centered at 15' in the air (which should put the center in, or with 5' of where the devil was last seen. Unless the devil has the ability to full attack and then move more than 5', it has to still be in that area. Also, this should only leave a 5' area at the bottom unaffected by the spell.
DM Harpwizard |
Tirion, I am not trying to persuade you one way or another, but simply to make this 2 dimensional map make sense. The perimeter is a balcony which is 10 feet higher than the center of the floor. Tomkin and Bofus were both attacked with a 10 foot reach when they were standing at a height of 10 feet already. Casting glitterdust at a 15' would reach as high as 25 feet and as low as 5 feet. Are you good with casting it at 15 feet in height.
DM Harpwizard |
Round 2
• Tirion casts enlarge on Mirrin. He then casts Glitterdust centered at M9/N10 at a height of 15ft up. The spell catches the large devil and you can see the creature's outline floating in the air. The devil is located at M/N/10/11 at an altitude of 25 feet.

But the spell fails to go off, rendering the rest of the post moot. 2nd time I had a great idea foiled by a crappy UMD roll

Tom sees the devil and looks to engage him again. If necessary, he will hop on his dog to the far side of the balcony to get closer (M10).

Saving Throw no; Spell Resistance yes
Calling down a litany of anathema, you make an evil more susceptible to the attacks of good creatures. If the target is evil, it takes double damage from attacks made by creatures with a good aura (from a class feature or as a creature with the good subtype). If the target also has the evil subtype; when it is hit with attacks made by creatures with a good aura, it is also dazzled for 1d4 rounds. If this spell targets a nonevil creature (or one that lacks the evil subtype), it has no effect, and the spell is wasted.
While subject to this spell, the target cannot be the target of another spell that has the word "litany" in the title.
Swift = litany of righteousness, full attack if in range, move + std attack if movement needed.

• Red begins inspiring his allies.
• Poppy fires off a shot, but the bone devil takes no notice.
