Doran Quickstep
Doran keeps an eye out as Ventus goes to follow Ysme, worried more about the horrors that seem to haunt these halls than the man and the girl butting heads. "I 'ope what we've dealth wit' so far is th' wors' o' what we'll fin' down 'ere... but I ain' holdin' me breath, mates," he says to Pirknok, Eli and Ensu. When Ventus and Ysme return, he nods tersely at them, before gesturing towards the door with his crossbow. "Good o' ya t' rejoin us. Le's git movin'," he suggests in a calm voice, trying not to sound sarcastic.
DM Feral
This huge room looks like nothing more than an immense underground cathedral. Stone doors stand to either side of the main entrance, but beyond this, the walls are carved with strange, spiky runes. In the center of the room is a large pool, with a ring of polished human skulls balanced on stone spikes arranged in a circle around the deeper midsection. At the far end of the room, a pair of stone stairways leads up to a pulpit on which sits a second pool, this one triangular and filled with churning, bubbling water that looks almost like translucent lava. Yet while wisps of what look like heat and steam rise from the strange orange liquid, the room itself is deathly cold.
A shrill disembodied voice cries out as the doors are opened.
"Intruders! How dare you violate the sanctity of this place? Leave the catacombs now or suffer the consequences!"
Doran Quickstep
Doran raises his weapon to his shoulder, eyes peering around the room for the source of the voice. "I ain' seen nothin' sacred in 'is blasted place! Show yerself!" he shouts in return. His face is set in a cold, professional mask. There is work to be done.
Perception: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27
Just for the record, boss, my initiative mod is +9 now. You rolled a +7 for me last time. :)
Ensu

Ensu just shakes his head at the departing paladin before focusing on the altar while others retrieve her.

Ensu is quiet, but braces himself to cast bless should battle prove to be forthcoming.
Pirknok Stonemight
Pirknok hesitates at the unexpected rebuke, and glances back. Doran's response seems to calm him somewhat, though he still holds his position at the door, only moving sideways to allow the others to enter. He grips his axe and glares around suspiciously.
Eli Blakewater
Eli looks around, alarmed. His crossbow rises and he begins fumbling for a bolt to load it with. "Was that a Goblin?" he whispers.
Ysmerelda, Dawn's Rose
untrained Perception: 1d20 ⇒ 5, to hopefully recognize if the voice sounded Goblin or not. Who knows, maybe it is Goblin.
"Doubtful, there was no singing or descriptions of improbable violence." Ysme whispers back. At the others incredulous glances, "What, you didn't notice? They're like demonic toddlers who've just learned to talk."
Ensu
Ensu decides to move things along. Acting on a hunch, he speaks in Thassillion, "To whom is this place dedicated to? It would be much easier for us to not violate it's sanctity if we knew whose sanctity we were working with."
DM Feral
The voice doesn't sound goblin. It's a higher pitch and somewhat feminine.
"You violate the Mother's temple. I am her priestess and I speak with her voice. Leave now or suffer her wrath!"
Yes, that's two separate religion checks.
DM Feral
"No! The tunnels must remain open. The goblins must suffer and die for Her glory! Die mortals!"

Ysmerelda: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (7) + 1 = 8

Chanting can be heard coming from the far end of the chamber.
Doran Quickstep
Doran says a quick blessing to Abadar while making some gestures with his left hand, before touching his breastplate. A golden glow appears around the Inquisitor for a moment, before it disappears. "Sorry lass, bu' I don' intend t' die t'day!" he shouts out, pointing his weapon towards the source of the chanting.
Doran casts Divine Favor on himself (standard action).
1st: 1/3 spells remain today.
Effect: Divine Favor (10/10 rounds)
Adventus Artemidorus
Ventus steps further into the room, moving towards where he thinks the chanting is coming from.
One move action to U21, readying an action to apply sword to first problem that presents itself.
Ysmerelda, Dawn's Rose
Knowledge (religion): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (1) + 6 = 7, seriously?
Ok, Ysme's got nothing...
"Why must any suffer or die for the glory of their mother?"
"What mother worthy of the name would demand that, of any creature?" As she asks these questions, Ysme moves forward, cautiously.
Move action to U25
Ensu
Knowledge (religion) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (3) + 7 = 10
So much for Ensu being a scholar and following the god of knowledge; he has yet to make a single knowledge roll anywhere in this dungeon. It's starting to make his campaign trait seem out of place and/or worthless.
Ensu starts his own chanting as soon as he hears the chanting from the invisible voice; as he chants a wave of positive thinking washes over the party (casting bless).
Pirknok Stonemight
Assuming the stairs are difficult terrain...
Pirknok moves quickly forward and up toward the voice, his face grim.
Move to T24 as first move action (skirting the pool). If he still can't locate the voice, he'll proceed up to R25 and end at R24 (stopping early if it seems like he's about to run over the voice, obviously). Glare around suspiciously, with an extra glare for the lurker who insists we're all going to die horribly.
Ensu
I'm more annoyed with the dice than the character concept. After all of those knowledge rolls, and no successes in any of them, it's just very frustrating. I don't expect all of them to succeed, but I really don't like how this dice roller almost never rolls the average numbers one would expect. As for taking 10, that is one reason, I am seriously considering at least a few levels of bard.
Eli Blakewater
Eli slips into the room and readies his crossbow to fire at the first enemy he sees.
Move to Y21 and ready to shoot.
Ysmerelda, Dawn's Rose
What did you want to do with your standard?
.
Was that directed at me? At this point-
Crud, I just realized I never tried to detect evil on the flying heads.
Probably pointless, but still.
The class ability says it's a move action, may I make the attempt as my standard instead? If so, may I try just 'looking' around the chamber rather than looking at a particular person, since there is no-one to look at just now?
DM Feral
There is a pop and then a great tearing sound as a horrible creature appears next to Pirknok. It stands on four squat muscular limbs and has a head that's equal parts cat and spider. Its hide is a pale orange but patchwork and whole sections of its bloody sinew can be seen as it moves about.
The creature snaps at the dwarf.
Claw: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (15) + 6 = 21
Damage: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (3) + 4 = 7
Teeth meet flesh as the monster latches on to the dwarf's shoulder and tries to take hold.
Grab: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (14) + 10 = 24
Up above, twenty feet in the air mad laughter fills the air.
"Why? WHY?! Because suffering feeds the Mother's power!"
"Prepare to meet your doom at the claws of her progeny!"
An arrow flies through the air and, as it does, a tiny impish creature wielding an appropriately sized bow appears.
Bow vs Ventus: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (3) + 10 = 13
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Bow vs Ysme: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (20) + 10 = 30
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Confirming vs Ysme: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (4) + 10 = 14
Damage: 2d6 + 4 ⇒ (3, 6) + 4 = 13
Eli and Doran your readied actions go off and then everyone's normal rounds.
Planes to identify the impish creature. Arcana to identify the thing biting Pirknok.
Pirknok Stonemight
Ow. Do you really have to always roll high when attacking me, DM?
HP: 13/30, rage round 1 (daily: 8/10)
The dwarf roars his defiance at the thing latched onto his shoulder, and slams his head forward in an attempt to injure it.
Attack (bless, no PA): 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 7 + 1 = 9 (I take a -2 to attacks, but he takes a -4 to Dex, so it cancels; I'm just omitting the -2)
Damage: 1d4 + 5 ⇒ (4) + 5 = 9
... not that it matters, since the dice STILL hate me.
Ensu
Knowledge (arcana) 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (20) + 7 = 27
Ensu moves up behind Ysme as he tries to recognize whatever it is that is attacking Pirknok.
Move to U26; not sure if that counts as double move or not; if not, he will cast either guidance or stabilize on Ysme, which ever is appropriate.
Adventus Artemidorus
Unable to do much against the flying thing, Ventus hustles up the stairs to the other side of the monster sinking it fangs into Pirknok.
Double move to R22, what I would give for some mithral armor right now.
DM Feral
The flying impish creature in the air appears to be this one's Summoner.
Ysme, unless you had an AC penalty I'm unaware of, I don't think that crit confirmed. Is your AC 15?
Ensu, it's a double move to get to V25 but Ysme is actually conscious. I moved you there for now but if you want to move somewhere else instead let me know.
Waiting on Eli's ready and Eli/Doran/Ysme's normal turn.
Doran Quickstep
1 person marked this as a favorite.
Doran flinches slightly at the creature that appears out of nowhere and strikes at Pirknok, but keeps his attention focused on the imp, moving closer to get a better shot at it. "Ya talk big, bu' I bet ya'll die jus' like yer fat'ead sacrifices! Me mates 'ere'll deal wit' yer big friend once I'm done dealin' wit' you!" the Inquisitor shouts, fury in his voice.
Doran moves into the room to W23 (move action), and then fires his Heavy Repeating Crossbow at the imp (standard action) and reloads (free action).
Masterwork Heavy Repeating Crossbow vs. Imp (Bless + Divine Favor + PBS): 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 28
Confirm Critical: 1d20 + 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (20) + 6 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 29
Masterwork Heavy Repeating Crossbow damage + Extra critical damage vs. Imp (Divine Favor + PBS): 1d10 + 1d10 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 ⇒ (4) + (3) + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 = 11
Now THOSE are the rolls that I've been waiting for!
Ysmerelda, Dawn's Rose
D'oh! You guys are right, the crit. didn't confirm. I plead late night & tired. Ysme is fine, comparatively speaking.
Am I correct in guessing the tiny flyer is the Evil Ysme detected, or was it the ugly critter?
Ysme runs to aid Pirknok.
Move or Double Move to get as close as possible to Pirknok & the thing.
Ysmerelda, Dawn's Rose
Not quite so tactically foolish as to worry about Concentrating on Evil when my compatriots are suffering from essentially unprovoked attacks.
As Ysme closes on the thing fighting with Pirknok, she swings the Halberd at the creature's center mass.
Halberd attack: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (14) + 4 = 18
Halberd damage: 1d10 + 3 ⇒ (8) + 3 = 11 Slashing.
edit: DM Feral, next round will I be able to take a 5' step to place this guy in Flanking between Pirknok & I?
Eli Blakewater
Eli lets his weapon fire at the small winged creature.
Light Crossbow 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (16) + 4 = 20
Damage 1d8 ⇒ 8
Seeing another creature appear, Eli's eyes widen.
Knowledge: Arcana 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (8) + 9 = 17
"You're kidding... The creature is an Eidolon, connected to the impish creature. Defeat the imp and the Eidolon will vanish..." he says. He then draws a vial from his belt and drinks it. A faint shield of force appears before fading from view.
Draw and drink Extract of Shield
DM Feral
The tiny little imp shriek as both Doran and Eli's shots slam into her.
"You'll pay! You'll all pay!"
The flying figure pulls a dagger and draws it across her outstretched hand.
"Witness the Mother's power!"
Tiny droplets of blood tumble through the air and land in the roiling well below the creature. The red liquid within reacts violently and begins to rapidly boil. A moment later a clawed hand bursts from the surface and a monstrosity similar to the one the party encountered earlier pulls itself free (including the halberd).
The tiny flying creature cackles but her laughter is cut short as the light from well grows dimmer. Panic shoots across its features.
"No, no, no, no! Too soon! It's too soon!"
***
The eidolon growls and tears at the shoanti-dwarf's shoulder.
Grapple for damage: 1d20 + 10 + 5 ⇒ (3) + 10 + 5 = 18
