GM Bali's Reign of Winter (Inactive)

Game Master Bali

A strange and unnatural cold has fallen in Southern Taldor. The town of Heldren calls for heroes, who will answer this call?

1 to 50 of 107 << first < prev | 1 | 2 | 3 | next > last >>

I have applied for some games (usually late, after tons of other applicants) and have not been lucky enough to get picked. Iam itching to role play though, so I figure I will just DM one!

I have been wanting to play Reign of Winter, but I would gladly DM that or another adventure path, chosen by consensus. I have ran kingmaker before, and a little bit of Carrion Crown. I also have Jade Reagent. I can do almost any, as long as I don't have to convert anything. :D

I do make changes though. So do expect some side quests, and story/npc changes.

I am in EST Standard time. GMT-5.

Point Buy: 20
# of Players: Max 5-6 in case a player disappears or dies.
Starting Gold: 500
Traits: 3 including one campaign trait. I will re-flavor campaign traits if an Adventure Path has one you like and we are playing another one. Actually I have no problem re-flavoring any trait as long as it makes sense.
Races: Anything that isn't ridiculous. For instance, Drow Noble obviously isn't going to happen. :D
Alignment: Any non evil. Former evil characters on the path of redemption are fine though.
Entry Deadline: 3/11. I may push it back if needed.

Anything else just ask. If you are interested in flaws, I will leave that to the consensus. I personally do 2 in my home games, but my players like them. I use UA and Dragon Flaws.

3PP are fine with me too, as long as it's ran by me.

I'm new to PbP but have been playing pen & paper for about a 3 months regularly and on and off "1 and dones" for many years. Would this be a good campain for me to start with. Any suggestions would be great.

Hey! I'd definitely be up for an AP. We'd need to decide on which exact AP we would be playing before chargen though...

I'm up for most APs (especially the later ones), but I think Reign of Winter will have the most support since it is the new hotness. And if we go for Reign of Winter, I think I'd like to try out a Huntmaster Cavalier (multiple dog companions + winter environment = dogsled).

So how exactly do you plan on deciding which AP you are going to run?

Hi I would like to recommend reign of winter applied to one but the game died before the selections were made. but at least the DM told us so that is all good.

I have a sorcerer in ind for Reign of winter

also if interested in playing -- check out Avalon acadamey it is always recuiting and in a role play heavy almost free form game blending all sorts of different gere's together.

I would gladly play a Reign of winter campaign, but a way of the wicked would also be appreciated - there seems to a great interest when they are announced.

@Merkatz: To be honest, I really want to run Reign of Winter the more I think about it. So, with that said, Let's do it! I was going to wait to see what the responses were, but I'd actually like to get character submissions going! :D

@W1d0w: New players are fine. Download the Reign of Winter Player's guide and see if you think it is right for you. :)

Always nice to see Avalon mentioned. :)

I have an idea for a catfolk that's lazy, but a hardworker when he has to be. He'd just rather be laying around in the sun. The idea, which came from thinking about actually cats, is that that he has surprise bursts of energy. I've seen my cats go from sleeping to OHMYGOODNESSWHATISTHATIMUSTCATCHIT in a split-second.

The class itself could be monk or barbarian(or maybe even psychic warrior from Dreamscarred Press if that's allowed), but the Strider is what I think fits best. It's a homebrew class created here on the boards, and utilizes extremely high speed for both defense and offense. I'd link to it, but an unable to at the moment.

Any AP is okay with me, and Reign of Winter does sound interesting.

@Azten: I have the Psionics PDF, so go for it.

I am running Reign of Winter for my home group (well, we start in two weeks.), and one of my players is playing a catfolk rogue who sleeps on the Sorcerer Gnome's couch. The gnome is a DMC of sorts (Only two playing in my campaign, so I had to roll up two DMCs). He also sort of acts as the Catfolk's hypeman lol. We had a session last week, but it was more of a "prelude" to the AP.

Anyway, long story short, Catfolk works for me in Reign of Winter. Or if you wanna have another option with a feline look and feel, maybe Rakshasa Heritage Tiefling?

Anyway, I will be available for a couple more hours. Looking forward to character submissions!

I'd be interested. How would you feel about a Spellslinger wizard? A Mwangi wizard with a gun could be interesting in the frozen North... :-D

Guns are okay with me, so no problem there!

Dark Archive

I'd like to leave my interest sitting here.

I've got a few ideas brewing, but I think I'll go take a look at psionics unleashed and consider some options there. Y'know, as long as 3pp is available.

What are your thoughts on custom races from the ARG? Like I said, I'd love to try a Kobold, but they're rated at 5 RP (and that seems a bit high to me).

I've been dying to play a Winter Witch. This would be the perfect game for it. Ill throw together a concept if you'll please do RoW :)

@Twilsemail: Psionics unleashed is fine. Building a race is fine, just post what you come up with.

@Dunebugg: RoW it is!

It looks good. I'm going to read through the players guide. I'm digging it so far. I will also be changing my avatar name shortly (before the 10 post max)so I will not post to many more times before I do that. I'm very interested if you're willing to allow me to "learn" PbP. EST isn't an issue either as I'm in NJ.

Shouldn't be a problem to learn :). It does go a slower than a live group, but it gives you more time to think out strategy and roleplay responses etc.

What will the availability/advancement of firearms be in this AP?

Since it's going to be a RoW campaign, I think I'll submit a winter oracle.

EDIT: Or perhaps a Fighter(viking)

@ w1d0w:
- you can have as mnay aliases as you want on this board. So feel free to make a new one for each game you want to apply to and you can keep w1d0w as your main identity. Go to 'My account' tab at the top of the page. then under 'Messageboard aliases' just click on 'creat new messageboard alias'

tossing around some ideas for a character for this game....

with third party stuff available I have some ideas but I may just be that oddball human but the only question I have is the use of some spells in the race guide say they are racial specific and can only be available with DM permission if that comes up I'll let you know for evaluation.

this came up in another game where my oracle of stone had to get rid of like 5 spells that were all about earth and stone becuase they said Oread race only and the character was human.

I'd like to play a ratfolk paladin.

@RainyDayNinja: Emerging.
@Big OM: Look forward to seeing what you come up with.

yeah another NJ player I thought I was the only one...

If it fits a concept, I am very lax on this issue.

The Exchange

What guidelines would you use for building races?

@D-Kal: I'll say 13 points max.

Also, just post what you come up with.

Dot for interest

@Pezmerga It's w1d0w, I've figured out how to change my alias. I'm a fan of keeping it simple, especially since this would be my first PbP. I would like to go with a cleric, probly Human unless you think a different race would mesh better.

Definitely interested.

@Volker: Human is always a fine choice.

Pezmerga, I have a Taldan human ranger already statted up, I just need to finish his background and post him; I'll try to get that done tonight. Are alternate racial traits from the ARG ok?

Dark Archive

I'm actually going to go with something fairly simple. I'll roll out a 2H fighter sometime soon. I've been making a bunch of complicated caster builds lately and think I might enjoy an easier concept.

Shadow Lodge

If you're still accepting applications, I'd like to dot this one. I'll take a look at the Player's Guide and see about what kind of character to build. Leaning toward a Wizard at present, but there are a few things I've been wanting to try.

I would like to submit a human fighter, maybe with the Viking archetype... or maybe not. Anyway, it will have a Norse feeling.

The Exchange

Could you perhaps explain flaws, as well as any pertinent background info on Reign of Winter?

So I guess I will begin working on a Human Cleric. Then keep my fingers crossed that it makes the cut. :)

Grand Lodge

I'm definitely interested. I'm going to put together a Human Ranger, focused on ranged attack, likely an Ulfen.

@Phillip0614: Yes ARG ARTs are ok.

@Twilsemail: I know the feeling!

@jlighter: Yeah feel free to submit a character.

@Reshar: Sounds good.

@D-Kal: Flaws are from 3.5's Unearthed Arcana. Basically they are drawbacks you select like a trait or feat. For every flaw that you select, which is usually a max of 2 in my games, you get a bonus feat. The existing flaws from UA are available in the various SRD documents online, and there are even some Dragon Magazine flaws available. No one has mentioned them thus far, so I am not sure if they are going to be included. I'll leave that up to general consensus.

As far as background info, do you have any specific questions that the RoW player's guide doesn't answer?

1 person marked this as a favorite.

Another silly question. How should my sheet be submitted, configured and such.

@w1d0w: Format it like this on your alias profile.

Also I made some points in the background section of this format if anyone wants to take note. :)

Edit: Mythweavers works too. Or you can do both if you'd like.

@Pezmerga: Here's my statblock. I'm looking at two alternate ideas. I'll list both after the block.

~Possibly starting as a custom race, either a Jotunblut / Half-Giant type guy or a Half-Troll via a Mountain Troll. I'll mull it over for the night.

~Completely different PC using the Huntmaster Cavalier in Animal Archive. My question for you is this. Can I take Boon Companion (as written in Animal Archive) and apply it to an animal companion, and at a later level take it again and apply it to a second? Boon Companion in AA says that it's applied to the Companion, not the PC. That's where my confusion comes from. If yea, I think I'll go with that. I like the idea of having two or three burly hounds with me. This would likely also work with a Pack Lord Druid, if I changed the concept up a bit.

Just to be sure. Are you starting the campaign in southern Taldor?

Grand Lodge

Throwing my hat in the ring with this alias.

Spoiler:

Gilthanis Silverbrow is the product of a Human man falling in love with an Elven woman. He lives with his father, since his mother is out taking care of her Elven business. He lives in Almas, with his father, where he is a guide. He shows people around the town, and around the wilderness surrounding the city.

When he heard about the ongoing winter conditions in Taldor, Gilthanis packed up and headed out on the road, seeking adventure and hopefully more.

Posting with my Mwangi Spellslinger wizard. Details in the profile.

I made the following assumptions in building him. Let me know if I need to change something:

-Starting with Common plus a bonus language based on human ethnicity
-Max HP at first level
-Crafted starting ammunition and acid flasks, rather than purchasing at full price

Definitely interested. If there's room I'll have a sheet up by the end of the night and a back story after that. I'm probably gonna go either gunslinger or inquisitor depending on what people submit before I get started.

Gilthanis Silverbrow wrote:

Hey Gilthanis now I'm tempted to play Fulito but I'll probably just stick with my sorcerer idea. first just in case the game Fulito is in suddenly returns to life

Is there a link to those flaws? I'd like to check 'em out. I think they could prove interesting.

Appearance:
Nelossë stands almost 6' tall, and has rather brawny arms for a woman. She wears her longsword proudly at her side, and her chain shirt is always polished brightly. Under her armor, she wears practical riding leathers and stout boots. She also wears a cloak suited for colder climes. Her hair is worn long and braided, and tends toward the platinum side of blonde. Her eyes are a bright blue, with an occasional glint of something fiery behind them.

Personality:
Nelossë tends to be very friendly, and always willing to lend a hand. Her experience with the coldness attitude of the Witches towards her failure to master their magic means she tries very hard to be accepted. When faced with a challenge, she attacks it with single-minded intensity and she does her best to accomplish her task.

Background:
Nelossë was one of many children born in the villages outside Irrisen. Many such children are born with the potential to be Winter Witches, and Nelossë was one such child. Before her second year, she had been taken to be tried as an apprentice Witch. Unfortunately for her, she didn't demonstrate any ability while there. For eight years, she tried and tried to achieve some measure of magical ability, but she never progressed beyond learning a few cantrips.

At age 10, Nelossë left trying to be a Winter Witch. Nelossë had developed into quite a strong young woman. She knew she wouldn't be accepted back in her home village, so she apprenticed with the City Guard of Whitethrone. She excelled with sword and buckler, and her ability to devote herself entirely to the task at hand served her well when it came to trying to training and sparring. She always made herself wear the heaviest armor they offered, and she quickly became accustomed to moving despite the weight.

When she was 14, Nelossë was sent on a training exercise with two other recruits and an older member of the guard. Their task was to try and drive off a herd of mammoths that had wandered to near to Whitethrone. Unfortunately, it turned out that it wasn't a herd of wild mammoths. The herd belonged to one of the tribes of savages, and they didn't appreciate the attempt to drive them off. The attack was devastating, and Nelossë was seriously injured before managing to crawl away and hide. She managed to return to Whitethrone, and as she recuperated, she discovered that her slight ability with cantrips had expanded, and she knew a few spells she had never been able to master before. Nothing fancy, but potentially useful.

Ultimately, the City Guard decided that she wasn't what they wanted, and she packed her few things and traveled south. She did some piece-work as a caravan guard and sometime entertainer during her journey, and after a long time traveling and guarding, she decided to travel for herself. She left the city she had come to, and made her way south. She wound up at the small village of Heldren.

Thanks for taking on a game, Pezmerga!

I'd like to submit Anniksson for Reign of Winter. His background is on his profile page below. I'll develop the crunch if he's selected. His background was inspired by the campaign traits, and mechanically I could see him being either a barbarian or battle oracle, or barbarian/oracle. In any case, I plan to max out Survival for him, so while he's been staying in Heldren, he may have been hunting wild game for the village's butcher, so the butcher might be able to recommended Anniksson's skills, even if most of the village only knows him by sight.

Link to Anniksson's profile

Created a Human Order of the Dragon Cavalier (Huntmaster) with a dog companion. Statblock is 100% complete, but I had thrown all the information up on my profile a little differently then you wanted. Will get that sorted out (as well as fill out the background info) in just a bit.
