Background:
In order to gain the favor of a noble woman, Narvolo challenged the right to lead his clan, the Dolagods, which were located in the heart of Southern Brevoy. His belief was that if he led his clan, he would then have the right to marry into a noble family and acquire their wealth legally. His opponent Varma, son of the previous leader, poisoned Narvolo's food the night before the fight. Narvolo was extremely sick during the fight, coughing up blood. This looked like he was being beaten by Varma, but Varma's weak strikes could never have made Narvolo bleed. Eventually, Narvolo collapsed from sickness, not blows from Varma. Varma banished Narvolo from the clan. Knowing he was cheated from his fate of ruling the clan and marrying into a noble family, Narvolo's heart turned sour. His jealousy and fury fueled his rage beyond normal levels. He turned away from Gorum and in a dream of lust for a noble woman, swore alliegence to Belial, who would fulfill his lustful desire if he would bring forth a temple to Belial rather than Asmodeus.
Eventually, he realized that without a clan, he would need to form a new clan, or at least be part of a group, and take over the unclaimed river kingdoms and make himself king, allowing him to build an army and destroy Varma and the Dolagod clan. Then he could marry any noble woman he wanted, legitimizing his hold on the kingdom. Narvolo doesn't have to be the ruler of the land, as long as he has a right to nobility through marriage. Once the contract is complete, he will fulfill his bargain with Belial.
