Will Save, Fearless: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (10) + 9 + 2 = 21
The ghost's scream washes meaninglessly over Rocco and the halfling smirks beneath his monstrous mask. "Please, you think you can scare me? I'm the MASTER OF FEAR," he screams as he raises the scroll held in his hand for so long. With a swish of silk, he unties the stark white ribbon binding the scroll closed and the enchanted paper unfurls as Rocco begins to read. With a final flourish, the runes inscribed on the page glow brilliant white and the same light appears around the ghost as the spell works to purge the evil presence from this plane of existence.
Cast Purge Spirit from my scroll. DC16 Will save or target takes 4d6 damage and is staggered for 1 round. On a successful save, the target takes half damage and is not staggered.
Purge Spirit: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 5, 6, 1) = 18

Go ahead and throw my 1/2elf bonus of +2 vs. Enchantments if possible! OH well...I don't think that's going to help here. She uses her one Move action to attack with the Flaming Sphere one more time!
Don't forget the +2 from Protection from Evil. Not that it matters for anyone who's rolled so far.
Elurius winces slightly at the ghost's terrible sounds.
Will Save, Protection from Evil: 1d20 + 3 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 3 + 2 = 20
♫"Ugh, someone get him a voice trainer or SHUT IT UP! I haven't heard a sound so off tune since Rocco last farted!"♫ In an attempt to stave off the horrendous noise, Elurius starts her own song in her best opera voice.
Starting her soung-bound curse given counter-song bardic performance. Details can be read here. DM Elan is this an instantaneous effect or an ongoing one, i.e. would it be able to help people already affected?
Perform (Sing): 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (19) + 13 = 32
DM Elan Morin |
The Silver Ravens (mostly) resist the ghost's wail and proceed to send him to whatever afterlife waits for him beyond the shroud.
With that the leaders of the budding rebellion are finally able to study their surroundings. It's immediately clear this used to be some sort of opium den, although the substances used to nourish the addicts congregating down here are obviously long gone by now. Three bodies are left sprawled on the same number of dust covered beds, probably the unfortunates whose souls the Silver Ravens just dispatched...
Rocco Hardweather |
Rocco checks the bodies of the deceased and decrepit druggies.
Appraise: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
"Well hello there," he says as he begins picking off shiny buttons and sliding glinting rings from fingers. "Looks like these folks had more money than they knew what to do with! We got at least a couple thousand gold worth of jewelry and what not here. I'll just hang onto these if ya don't mind!"
Added to the loot sheet
After picking the bodies clean of anything valuatble, Rocco holds up a finger above one of the bodies and addresses the Ravens. "Want me to see if they have anything to say?"
Anybody interested in a casting of Grave Words?
DM Elan Morin |
@Rocco: fair warning, their souls were the ghost you defeated. Grave Words won't work on them
Where next?
Oren Mitabu |
Perception 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23
Oren looked around the room, hoping to not miss anything the group had to fight so hard against. ”Thank you for healing me versus those awful ghosts. I’d have been out of luck without the rest of you.”
Lirotha Karsani |
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (3) + 13 = 16
Shaking off the wierd ghost's scream, she immediately looks around the room, dismisses her spell, and then catches sight of Val's strange shaking.
Heal(Valrani): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
"Are you OK Val?"
Elurious, can you make a Knowledge(religion) check and see if you can figure out what those creatures were? It might tell us how to help Val..
_Valrani |
Her hands quivering, Val shakes her head.
"I don't know what that ghost did to me, but... "
She looks worried. "I think I might need something to calm my nerves. This place is just getting to me, that's all."
Rocco Hardweather |
With no one speaking up about Rocco's offer, and realizing himself that the spirit-less corpses probably wouldn't be able to speak anyway, Rocco shrugs and turns to help Oren search the room.
Rocco perception (aid Oren): 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
Kurglunn perception (aid Oren): 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Success! That's an additional +4 to Oren's Perception.
If the GM would allow Lirotha's perception to count as an Aid, and everyone else also successfully aided, we could just hit the Perception DC!
Sorry for the meta-gamey post!
Lirotha Karsani |
Turning to Elurious, Lirotha whispered to her.
"I'm worried about Val. Something is wrong."
DM Elan Morin |
Thanks to her friends' help, Oren notices basically every wall here holds a secret passage leading to some sort of hidden lobby behind the Opium Den.
After checking the secret passages and noticing how they hide nothing but dust and some faded and crumpled tatters you decide to follow Valrani's suggestion and open the last set of double doors.
The oval-shaped chamber in front of you is dominated by a twenty-footdeep pit. Narrow ledges, only two feet wide and slanted toward the pit, run along its edges. Two rusty iron winches sit to the east and west sides of the room, connected by a length of sagging, moldy rope that hangs over the pit. Thick growths of pale yellow fungus grow in the pit, amid the bones of what appears to be a long-dead giant snake. The fungus has reached the central portion of the southern ledge, but hasn’t grown that high on the northern side.
Oren Mitabu |
”Does anyone know anything about that yellow fungus? Has it dissolved the body of the snake over there? I don’t like the looks of that.”
_Valrani |
int: 1d20 ⇒ 13
nature: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (5) + 6 = 11
"I'm sure I've heard about them.." says Valrani.
"But for the life of me I can't remember any details at the moment."
Looking closer she adds "I wonder what killed that snake?"
Lirotha Karsani |
Lirotha looks into the room with the pit.
"Hunger most likely. Let's not take any chances with the fungus. I've heard to many warning tales of such stuff doing horrible things to unwary people. That winch looks useless. We need to make a bridge of some sort. Any suggestions? I cna fly over, but that leaves the rest of you behind I think. Any more stone shape spells available? We could make the ledge much more easily walk-able that way."
Rocco Hardweather |
"Uh...it's a skeleton. In a building full of undead. We're not making aannnyyy assumptions about this thing's state of liveliness." Rocco edges up toward the edge of the pit, with Kurglunn holding onto the halfling for extra caution.
With a few muttered words and a moment of concentration, Rocco reaches out toward the snake as his hands and eyes begin to glow with an eerie, otherworldly light.
Cast Detect Undead down toward the snake and the rest of the pit within a 60ft cone.
DM Elan Morin |
Rocco casts his spell and immediately knows the dead snake is just that. Dead. As Lirotha mentioned it probably starved in the pit when left with no fat little halflings to chew on...
You notice that you could bypass the pit by sliding on the northern or souther ledges, keeping your backs to the walls.
And roll a second perception check please
Rocco Hardweather |
"Alright. Looks safe enough I guess. Better take another look around, though before we go crossing this nasty pit."

Not sure if we have enough aids possible to get me to 40.
Elurius Parthreon |
Sorry, I have been falling off the posting bandwagon lately! Elurius did make a religion check against the ghosts at the beginning of the combat and it was terrible, she can't recognize them sadly. As for enough to boost Oren to 40, if Rocco, Kurglunn's and Lirotha's checks were counted as aids She'd have a +8 so far, so another 2 is all she needs.
Elurius stays fairly quiet as everyone scans over the room the ghosts had been in, clearly not wanting to get near the bodies and dead things in the room. She stays taht way through the big double doors and stares at the dead snake and the moss with apprehension. "It's not going to rear up and strike us is it Rocco? I ain't fighting a dead snake, that just ain't happening!"
She then gives the room a quick glance over, before pointing out something to Oren, "Ohhhhhhh, look there's a giant thing of mold over there too!"
Perception, aid: 1d20 - 1 ⇒ (3) - 1 = 2
Lirotha Karsani |
Lirotha sighs and activates her flying ability and starts moving over the pit to cross.
"Let me see if there is someplace to tie a rope on to or a control to extend a bridge or something."
Perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (14) + 13 = 27
DM Elan Morin |
Lirotha notices how the northern ledge of the pit is in fatc trapped. Anyone foolish enough to try crossing over by stepping on that ledge would be thrown down into the pit!
With that firmly in mind, the group decides to cross using the southern ledge and easily bypass the obstacle...
What do you want to do now?
Lirotha Karsani |
"Looks like we will need everyone to cross via the southern route, but we need to avoid that fungus if we can. Can anybody identify it?"
She then crosses and lands safely on the other side clear of the pit/fungus/trap.
"This is all going to be harder than I thought my pretties."
Elurius Parthreon |
Elurius gives the fungus a disdainful look, before adding in "We might not want to get too close to the fungus in case it does something odd in reaction to the fire. But I otherwise think burning it is a brilliant idea!" She then reaches into her bag and pulls out a back pack, before removing a torch, a candle and a flint and steel. She lights the torch with the flint and steel and looks to Lirotha. "Hey, pretty flying lady, you'd probably be able to toss this in the safest of us all! Want to do the honors?"
Lirotha Karsani |
Sighing Lirotha shakes her head.
"I'd rather not. My flying can be used in bursts or at length, but it eats at the magic nonetheless when I use it. I don't want to burn out the magic completely for the day too quickly, as I might need it again. Feel free to have Oren toss the torch, her hands are far stronger and swifter than mine."
Lirotha Karsani |
Lirotha flips off the halfling.
"Who is already over here alone and waiting for you?"
Oren Mitabu |
Oren waits silently for one of them to set the fungus ablaze before any of them get eaten by it.
DM Elan Morin |
Perhaps it wasn't clear but the fungi spores can't get you as long as you don't jump into the pit. Anyway...
After much deliberation the Silver Ravens decide to err on the side of caution and throw a lit torch into the pit. The mold infesting it immediately takes fire. It's consumed in a couple of minutes but the pit does not reveal anything different besides the now charred serpent's bones.
Once the deed is done the group bypasses the obstacle and opens the set of doors leading west. As they do a new and someohw fashinating toom opens before their eyes.
Two pillars support the ten-foot-high ceiling of the new chamber. The floor is decorated with five-foot-square colored tiles, the reds and yellows and blues and greens faded with the passage of time and appearing to have no real pattern. The mangled skeletons of two people lie slumped in the center of the room.
What do you do? Who enters? How do you want to proceed once inside? And of course... roll perception!
Oren Mitabu |
Oren waits for the phantasm to take the lead, and she follows directly behind, providing support. ”I’m not good at puzzles. Think there is a clue to this?

"I have to say we may need to send in Kurglunn first. The apparitions seemed to ignore him until he attacked them. That makes him our best scout I think. Rocco?"
Rocco Hardweather |
"Yeah yeah, I'm getting to it. First things first, though." Rocco once again raises a hand and casts is spell to project a cone of chilling light into the room, particularly sweeping the light over the corpses to check if they might animate.
Cast Detect Undead - 60ft cone projected into the room
If the bodies don't appear to be undead, Rocco will send Kurglunn in. The phantom is back in his ectoplasmic form again, having taken a few moments with Rocco to rematerialize once the Ravens had passed the pit of mold.
DM Elan Morin |
It's not easy to spot but Lirotha keen sight allows her to notice how the yellow tiles have hidden compartments beneath them... searching them will have to wait though.
While Rocco makes certain no undead monster infests the room in front of the Silver Ravens and is reassured to know there's none indeed, Kurglunn advances inside the room. As the phantom does something unusual manifests: a misshappen form emerges from the westen wall. A squat beast, as wide as it is tall. It has three arms, three legs, three eyes, and one huge, fanged, mouth...
