Jax had exactly the right idea: correct play here was to engage indirectly and tease information out of him without actually asking.
Third, you could seek to ally with him. He's a deeply evil creature and a bloodthirsty sadist with a hair trigger temper, so you'd have a lot in common. He can't be made more than Neutral towards you, but that's good enough to strike simple deals -- "watch our backs and report who comes past", "kill anyone you see who looks like this", etc. For a price, naturally.
Could you give an example of indirectly getting information without actually asking?
Cуровую was trying to ally with the creature even before she realized how deadly he was, being familiar with the area he could have been useful.

-- A pair of very nice gloves... that radiate faint magic!
-- A spellbook! Unfortunately, he's been using it for kindling. It looks like only a few pages are intact.
Can Cуровую identify those spellbook remains and the gloves?
Cуровую зиму |
Okay, then -- you're packing up the bodies (how, exactly?) and heading back to town. Any final preparations before you leave this charming, sunny little meadow?
Can Cуровую make one final check of the area, her Perception is not that high, buts among the best in the group.
Cуровую зиму |
Slight adjustment to the plan. We will quickly gather what is left of his remains and bury it in a shallow grave so it is not quite so gory.
We will then place a cross over it with the note and his hat draped over it.Do we know the name of the local commander left in the town, we should add it to the note. Always need someone to pin it on.
Will sign it with that commanders name.
That's easy Dren, please adjust it as the commander is none other than ELISE ZADARIA, Cуровую uses Prestidigitation to affix a facinatingly accurate picture of Elise next to her name and signature.

"Sure, you're right, we're just passing through on our way to yonder tower. I guess we're the first ones to come this way in a long time."
"Heuch, no, yer bunch a dimmies. Why there was a crowd of loud loons through here not a month ago, led by a some auld granny wi' a stick." The little man looks thoughtful. [b]"She was aw right, though. Sensible."
etc.
Jax Naismith |
Too bad Jax didn't have the charisma to pull that off. I think next level he may be investing in some diplomacy skill points...
Dren of the Dark Tapestry |
Dren could have gone down that path but he took an instant dislike to the little cretin...plus his interaction thus far in his life has been limited to the base races and some summoned extra-planar creatures. He didn't get the vibe of this creature.
Judge Tohram Quasangi |
I started working on getting him on our side, then Edmin tried to intimidate him and that was the end of that attempt. I even converted a great Rush song into a redcap and treant battle song.
Edmin Al'Roth |
In my defense you don't see evil characters sitting around a fire singing, you see the strong leading. That is what I hoped anyway. "Serve or Die!"
Judge Tohram Quasangi |
No, you were totally in character. Unfortunately it was one of those times where several of us posted in between DMDM posts with the result being a redcap who was pretty sure that someone from Liverpool just insulted the Red Devils.
(Rangers just does not feel right being a "red"cap. Must really be a ManU or Liverpool fan.)

DM, Zoren and Cymu rolled Knowledge(Local) awhile back to see if they knew anyone who would buy that scythe. I think Zoren got a 17 and Cymu a 20 something

Is there a negative modifier for being dead?

Cуровую had a Knowledge Local 27, but when I was reading the ooc thread I thought arrived in town.
Cуровую would also like to spellcraft the gloves and remains of the spellbook.
For the trip back to town should we 'lend' the axe to Grumblejack?

Zimu we already identified the gloves

The sky has cleared, and faint beams of moonlight filter through the trees, providing a dimmish sort of light. The forest is far from silent: there's the rushing of wind, the creaking of the trees, faint animal cries from time to time, occasionally a sudden rustling in the underbrush as some small creature scurries away.
And then there's a faint "thud" from behind you.

Yes zimu take a look
Douglas Muir 406 |
Grumblejack lies prone on the trail several yards behind you. He seems to be deeply asleep, with the hint of a smile on his ugly face. As you watch, he begins to snore softly.
A voice speaks out of the shadows. "You have keen eyes, to walk through the Bryr by moonlight. Can you see what is unseen, then? Do you see my brother's knife at your companion's throat?" It's a female voice, and speaking common Talirean, though with something odd in the consonants.
(You don't see anyone near Grumblejack.)
Ulp |
No. I Ulp. You?
Edmin Al'Roth |
Edmin looks out the window of the flat and yells over his shoulder to Bref. " Wake up the fop and the stinking one, it looks like we may have more company coming!"
Judge Tohram Quasangi |
The Judge has found that contrary to popular belief, the blood of the dead is nowhere as tasty as that of the living. He will have to find some fresher brew when he escapes from the haunted flat.

Using Linguistics to try to determine the possible source of the accent and pronounciation, Elven? Fey?
1d20 + 10 ⇒ (11) + 10 = 21
Rapidly. In Talirean, then based off Linguistics, possibly Elven and Fey
"We seek no quarrels and have no desire to remain in your domain, we are but passing through this area."
Diplomacy 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (13) + 9 = 22
Casting See Invisibility focusing on the direction of the voice first then to where Grumblejack is laying.

I should show them the might of Loralis...but then again I don't have a target...let the stupid humans talk.

She can also cast it from her bonded item.
Dren interrupts Cy, placing his hand gently on her arm. Wait, before we start casting spells and potentially make these folk our enemy, lets hear them out, they are probably just protecting their territory.
My name is Dren, I am the healer for this group. Perhaps we can come to an arrangement for infringing on your territory? We are sorry to have trespassed.
Dren bows in the direction of the Ogre.
You obviously have us at a disadvantage...having powers such as invisibility and stealth. What can we do to make good for our error, we do not wish you our enemy? Perhaps a payment for your troubles and our trespass?
diplomacy 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (10) + 12 = 22

"Hm!" The unseen woman's voice grows thoughtful. "Tales speak of adventurers as truculent folk, quick to battle. Or is it that you are coming from battle already?
"Well, then... let us say, a fist of gold for each of you to pass freely down this trail, and twice that for your companion, for Bruno says he's larger than he looks. Toss that to Bruno -- he's right by your companion's head, there -- and we'll call that square."
5 gp each and 10 for Grumblejack is 35 gp. (That's assuming Zimu still has her dead monk with her, which I don't recall reading otherwise.) If you're willing to pay that, someone mark it off. If not, that's fine too -- tell me what you do instead.
Ulp |
Fine with me. 35 gp is nothin. and we don't need to risk fighting something dangerous
Ulp digs in his pouch and pulls out the coinage.
He tosses the coin.
I will assume that our talkers would probably try to get a cheaper price, but I would rather not deal with anymore risk.
Judge Tohram Quasangi |
The Judge keeps his mouth shut this time. Partially because he is unsure what to say and partially because the disconnect between his head and his body makes the musculature control quite difficult.
Cуровую зиму |
You already cast See Invisibility back with the redcap.
Absolutely right, sorry it was not marked off when I checked my sheet.
Sense Motive 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 8 = 27 on our hosts, what are they thinking? Do they have any curiosity about us?
Can these be made allies? Say if we brought them apple pie?
Did the Linguistics detect what their diction and accent came from?
Dren of the Dark Tapestry |
Seeing Ulp digging in his pouch, I would say that is entirely fair. We have, after all, intruded on YOUR domain. My friend Ulp will pay you. Yes, the being you have captured is my protector of sorts, we keep his true size hidden so creatures underestimate him.
You seem to be very reasonable folk...perhaps we can make a bargain on top of your compensation?
Safe passage if we decide to come back and maybe...some information for this shiny red stone about some things other than anything that would endanger yourselves?
Dren roots out a nice 100gp gemstone he has in his possession...its not big but it is red and shiny. He holds it out for the creatures to see.
No danger for you, just safety for us. I also offer you whatever healing I have...if you need it if we are in your domain. What do you say?
The few of your that have known Dren for this many months are not sure what he is about...you have never seen him like this before.
Dren is keeping most of his remaining wealth in gems since he couldn't carry gold with his low STR.
Douglas Muir 406 |
"Let me make a different suggestion. I'd like to offer a bet. A contest.
"Pick a champion and have him fight Bruno, here." (You still don't see Bruno, there. Or anywhere else.) "A friendly match, we'll say. Nobody dies. And since you're a healer, you agree to heal any injuries. You don't help your man, now -- he fights alone. It goes until one taps out, or can fight no more. If your fellow wins, we'll give you information. Say, we'll answer three questions as best we can. If Bruno wins, you give us that pretty red stone.
"What say you?"
