Round 6 (ongoing):
Initiative order
Enemies-acted
Asvald
Eva-
Torque-
Senja-
The seugathi on Torque slashes and bites at the half-orc, but can't get through the doughty lawgiver's armor. The other one puts three more magical darts into him, though, for another 10 HP. Torque also notices that the one on the ground seems to be stirring as its wounds slowly close. Senja, Eva, and Asvald are still gripped by some madness, as they strike themselves! Senja, take 3 HP. Eva, take 5 HP through your DR. Asvald, take 13 HP.
Torque can act!
Eva: 1d8 + 4 ⇒ (2) + 4 = 6
Asvald: 1d8 + 7 ⇒ (6) + 7 = 13

Iterative shortsword to Torque: 1d20 + 6 ⇒ (11) + 6 = 17
Bite to Torque: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (12) + 5 = 17
Magic missiles vs. Torque: 3d4 + 3 ⇒ (2, 1, 4) + 3 = 10

I don't think it matters terribly but I forgot heroism on saves for the last few rounds.
That would be 21, 17, 20, and 18 respectively.
| DM Carbide |
It doesn't matter; as long as you miss one save, you're under the confusion effect. Definitely remember it for next round, though.
Torque the Lawbringer
|
Apparently the fear of Law has not been instilled into these creatures as Torque notices the Red one stirring. He slashes at it to end its chaotic life for good.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (19) + 12 = 31
Power Attack: 1d12 + 17 ⇒ (7) + 17 = 24
If red stops moving, the iterative will go into black.
Power Attack: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
Power Attack: 1d12 + 17 ⇒ (5) + 17 = 22
| DM Carbide |
Torque, do you think it would be wiser to save the prone (and thus easier to hit) target for your iterative attack?
| DM Carbide |
Fair enough.
Torque's mighty axe cleaves into the downed foe, cutting what passes for its head in half. Unfortunately, the blade sticks for a moment, and the half-orc isn't able to connect with the other one on the backswing.

This might change depending on Senja's saves, but likely won't:

With Asvald's resistance to the potent aura of madness around the creatures, one attacks him while the other continues to attack Torque. Neither of them are able to hit. However, Eva suddenly realizes that there is a terrible and evil bear next to her, and attacks Asvald!
Everyone can act!

I assume fortune is down since Senja spent a round in confusion?
Snapping out of his muddled state, Barsvald roars before tearing into the next hideous abombination.

Sorry for the delay, been busy skiing! I expect that roll will mean I'm confused again. Can you tell us the DC for that save, so we can post based on success or failure?
| DM Carbide |
Correct. I'm on site for work today, though, and posting at length from my phone is a pain.
| DM Carbide |
Hope the skiing was fun.
Eva chops at Asvald, while Senja hits himself for 6 HP.

So Asvald can maintain the grab, unless the seugathi wriggles free.
| DM Carbide |
Most impressive.
| DM Carbide |
Waiting on Senja's saves. Eva, did you really roll two nat 20s?
| DM Carbide |
Ah. Having the saves in that order is actually sort of important, under the circumstances.

The seugathi facing Torque lays into the half-orc without success. The other tries to wriggle free of the bear hug, likewise without success.
Asvald, if you can kill the one on you Eva will be able to act normally this round.

Bearvald shreds the seugathi! As it falls, Eva feels a weight lift from her mind. There is still a disturbing feeling of weakness, but for the moment she is in control.
Eva and Torque can act, and I still need saves from Senja.
Senja Kala

Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20
Will: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31
Senja manages to hang on to his somewhat shaky senses as the seugathi tries to muddy his mind! He tosses a net of shadow onto the weird creature, hoping to encumber its movements so his friends can kill it!
Misfortune Hex, DC 21 Will save
The skiing was the best I've ever experienced! Last Friday was amazing, and Tuesday of this week was also great! And now I'm home, so should be able to pay a bit more attention.
| DM Carbide |
Senja's hex is effective, and Torque hits the seugathi once.
Eva?
Eva Baldursdóttir

Eva tightens her grip on her sword and glares at the creature before her, then twirls her blade in a dizzying blur!

Eva manages to knock out the last seugathi! It regains consciousness next round, but even if no one susceptible resists its aura of madness Torque is unlikely to miss the prone target twice.
Out of combat, and that completes the level! I'll get the chronicle sheets together in the next few days.
| DM Carbide |
After a return to the surface to rest, relax, and reequip, the party returns to the landing where they detoured into the Tomb of Yarrix, and descends from there. The stairs become regular flights, switching back every twenty feet for about 400 feet. There are several chambers off of the landings, but all are collapsed and choked with rubble. Finally, the stairs end at a vertical shaft with an iron ladder on one side, descending into darkness.
I'll need an order of descent, once you're ready.
Eva Baldursdóttir
|
No objections here.
Note for combat: unless she uses a different swift action, Eva will always start Marid Style in the first round of combat.
| DM Carbide |
Just waiting for Asvald to confirm his position.
| DM Carbide |
With Asvald in the lead, the party descends the ladder. The climb seems endless, hand over hand into darkness. Somewhere around the 150' mark, Asvald starts noticing condensation on the wall, and spots of corrosion on some of the rungs of the ladder. Another ten feet, and the rungs start getting a little slick--except for the increasingly large patches of rust. The skald can pick out what looks like the bottom of the shaft below, but with thirty feet to go the walls and rungs are coated with thick slime, and a few feet from where that starts Asvald notices a gap where some of the rungs have rusted off completely. He figures that it's going to be a tricky bit of climbing to negotiate that without falling.
What do you do?
Asvald Bjornson
|
Before moving further Asvald works some spells.
See invisibility and heroism for now.
"I don't know how much I trust what's left of the ladder. It's probably best if we provide our own for the rest of the descent."
The skald retrieves a length of rope and affixes one end to one of the sturdy rungs with a tight sailor's knot.
"Alright, here we go."
Senja Kala
|
Senja floats effortlessly down the long shaft, explaining to his friends that they are simply too large for him to be able to lower them safely and that they'll have to climb.
As Asvald works to attach the rope, Senja studies the rusted rungs and the slime, wondering aloud, "What do you suppose did this to the ladder? A corrosive atmosphere wherever we're headed, or some slimy, rusty creature?"
Carbide - I'd like to make a knowledge check to try to identify what might be causing the damage to the ladder. How about I roll and you apply the appropriate modifier? Here are your options: Knowledge (arcana) +15, Knowledge (dungeoneering) +14, Knowledge (engineering) +8, Knowledge (history) +11, Knowledge (local) +13, Knowledge (nature) +14, Knowledge (planes) +14, Knowledge (religion) +12
Knowledge (?): 1d20 ⇒ 17
| DM Carbide |
Senja figures it could just be the humidity. There are oozes that can corrode metal, of course, but they tend to be all or nothing.
