The Stone Fist |
Man, I had some kind of vapor lock. I'll do as you suggest. 5' N, 5' NE, then 5' E. And then that's it for me. Oh, and I should try to be stealthy. 1d20 - 7 + 20 ⇒ (20) - 7 + 20 = 33
The answer is none. None more stealthy.
DM Carbide |
Round 3 (ongoing):
Trianne plinks away at one of the giants while Seamus and Kronug hold their fire. Haftor advances with such stealth that no one without magical divination realizes he's gone.
Jarrek?
Jarrek Everstand |
Why did we retreat into the hallway? Are we trying to make it so only one can swing at us (minus Haftor) at a time?
Jarrek, in spite of being badly hurt, leers at the closer of the two giants. "What are you even swinging at? Are you afraid to come after us? Or are you too stupid to know we're getting away?"
Intimidate check to try to get one to come into the hallway? That's the best idea I have for splitting them up.
Intimidate check to... idk 'coerce opponent' but I'm not trying to make it friendly: 1d20 + 20 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 20 + 1 = 22
DM Carbide |
The shouted challenge has no apparent effect on the giants, though both frown, their coarse features contorted in something like confusion. Both of them swing at the space Haftor vacated, without apparent effect. One growls to the other in Giant.
Round 4:
Initiative order
Trianne
Jarrek
Haftor
Seamus
Kronug
Hill giants
Party up!
The Stone Fist |
Haftor wanted to get into a position where he could attack both giants before he turned back visible, but this was going to have to be good enough. He made one more maneuver around the northern giant, then attacked, turning visible as he did so.
Move: 5' west, then 5' south. warhammer att on yellow 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (14) + 9 = 23 damage 1d10 + 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (4) + (3) + 4 = 11 acid
Kronug the Merciless |
Kronug smiles as he hears that the giants are preparing to close with him for melee, then frowns and curses as he sees Hathor become visible out in the room.
Why is he out there?? Have to back him up.
"Seamus, bomb them! Jarrek, follow me!"
Kronug waits for Seamus to make his attack, then uses Total Defense and moves up. This should (hopefully) draw out both of the giants' AOOs, allowing Jarrek to move into position without being attacked. (Unless the giants have Combat Reflexes.)
At the point when he takes an AOO, he is adjacent to 1 ally (for +2 from Lastwall Phalanx), with +4 AC from Total Defense.
That makes his total AC 34 against the giants.
Should they choose to use combat maneuvers as their AOOs, his CMD will be 30 against Disarm or 34 against Trip.
Seamus MacWirst |
Seamus, finally seeing Haftor, and hearing Kronug's shouted orders, pulls a bomb, flinging it at the closest giant.
Attack, touch, PBS: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (4) + 9 = 13
Fire Damage, PBS: 3d6 + 5 ⇒ (2, 5, 5) + 5 = 17
Splash Damage, Haftor exclduded]DC16 Reflex or 8 damage
Jarrek Everstand |
Sure I'll delay until after Kronug.
"RAAAAAAA!" Jarrek charges in next to Kronug.
Falchion PA+DF: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (13) + 9 + 2 = 24
PA Dmg+Arcane Strike+DF+whetstone: 2d4 + 8 + 1 + 2 + 1 ⇒ (2, 3) + 8 + 1 + 2 + 1 = 17
DM Carbide |
Round 4 (ongoing):
Haftor appears and attacks a giant, hitting it solidly. Kronug directs tactics before advancing carefully. Seamus does more damage to both giants, Kronug dodges or deflects the giants' attacks of opportunity, and then Jarrek charges and hits. Both giants are looking beat-up, but their tremendous mass and vitality keep them in the fight.
Trianne?
AoOs: 2d20 ⇒ (11, 6) = 17
Giants: Blue -56 HP Yellow-60 HP
Trianne Ashton |
Trianne knows she can’t thread that melee with anything serious, and she chastises herself mentally a bit. She should have more scrolls at her disposal for versatility, but she’s been spending too much time on hard item crafting. She makes a mental note to remedy that as she sends another bolt into one of the giants.
MM charge at Yellow. Ray of Enfeeblement on Yellow, 2/5 rds remain.
MM damage: 1d4 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2
DM Carbide |
Trianne does a bit more damage to the marginally more wounded giant. The giants try to pound on Jarrek and Kronug, but miss with all their attacks.
Round 5:
Initiative order
Trianne
Jarrek
Haftor
Seamus
Kronug
Hill giants
Everyone can act!
Yellow vs. Jarrek, iterative, incl. RoE and shaken: 1d20 ⇒ 13
Blue vs. Kronug, incl. shaken: 1d20 ⇒ 7
Blue vs. Kronug, iterative, incl. shaken: 1d20 ⇒ 10
Giants: Blue -56 HP Yellow-62 HP
The Stone Fist |
Haftor continues to hammer on his opponent.
warhammer 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (12) + 9 = 21 damage 1d10 + 1d4 + 4 ⇒ (1) + (4) + 4 = 9 acid
I can't move without an AoO, and I can't even 5' step in the difficult terrain, so I'm just going to stand here.
Kronug the Merciless |
Kronug attacks the same giant that Haftor attacked.
Attack, PA: 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (20) + 12 - 2 = 30
Damage: 2d6 + 8 + 6 ⇒ (3, 6) + 8 + 6 = 23
Confirm?: 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (7) + 12 - 2 = 17

Round 5 (ongoing):
Initiative order
Trianne
Jarrek
Haftor-acted
Seamus
Kronug-acted
Hill giant-
HHaftor and Kronug finish off one of the giants!
Trianne, Jarrek, and Seamus can act.
Hill giants: AC 21 T 8 FF 21 HP taken - Blue: 56 (shaken)
DM Carbide |
Seamus, I think you get your Throw Anything INT bonus to damage with any splash weapon, not just your bombs.
Jarrek Everstand |
"YES!" Jarrek spun his falchion in a full circle as he focused on the remaining giant.
Falchion PA+DF: 1d20 + 9 + 2 ⇒ (15) + 9 + 2 = 26
PA Dmg+Arcane Strike+DF: 2d4 + 8 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2, 3) + 8 + 1 + 2 = 16
DM Carbide |
Seamus and Jarrek both hit the giant, leaving it reeling but still conscious.
Trianne?
Trianne Ashton |
Trianne watches as the others carve their way through the giants, assessing resource need now versus what yet lay ahead. She glances backward to verify they haven’t drawn attention from behind them yet before lashing out with a band of energy to bite into the remaining giant.
Cast Jolt.
Jolt Ranged Touch attack vs. Blue: 1d20 + 4 - 4 ⇒ (13) + 4 - 4 = 13
Jolt damage: 1d3 ⇒ 2
DM Carbide |
Trianne can't quite drop the giant. In turn it rounds on Jarrek, pounding him for 29 HP, which I think puts him unconscious and missing Kronug with his next attack.
Round 6:
Initiative order
Trianne
Jarrek
Haftor
Seamus
Kronug
Hill giant
Party up!
PA vs. Jarrek: 1d20 ⇒ 18
PA damage: 2d8 + 16 ⇒ (5, 8) + 16 = 29
PA vs. Kronug: 1d20 ⇒ 2
Hill giant: AC 21 T 8 FF 21 HP taken - Blue: 79 (shaken)
Kronug the Merciless |
Kronug holds his ground as Jarrek falls, and continues to hammer at the giant with Gorum's Thorn.
"Die!"
Attack, PA: 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (19) + 12 - 2 = 29
Damage: 2d6 + 8 + 6 ⇒ (1, 3) + 8 + 6 = 18
Crit?: 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (14) + 12 - 2 = 24
Crit Damage: 2d6 + 8 + 6 ⇒ (4, 3) + 8 + 6 = 21
Trip?: 1d20 + 12 - 2 ⇒ (17) + 12 - 2 = 27
Kronug slices clean through the giant's midsection, disemboweling it and knocking it to the ground with the force of the blow.
Assuming that a 39-point crit kills the giant before the Trip even takes effect.
"PRAISE GORUM!!"
DM Carbide |
Yeah, it had like 3 HP left.
The last giant falls with a thud that seems to shake the floor.
Out of combat! More to come on the room contents, etc.
Kronug the Merciless |
Jarrek is not merely knocked unconscious, but dying.
"Hey, the half-orc isn't looking so good. Haftor, can you do something?"
Kronug tries to stop the bleeding.
Heal DC 15: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (19) + 1 = 20
He succeeds at that, at least.
The Stone Fist |
Haftor nods to Kronug, kneels beside Jarrek, and intones a quick healing prayer to Torag.
"Runnin' very low on healin', I am."
CMW 2d8 + 5 ⇒ (5, 6) + 5 = 16
Jarrek Everstand |
Jarrek groans and rolls over onto his side before pushing himself into a sitting position. He glances over at the giants and nods. "Well, good then. Knew we could take 'em." The big half-orc nods his thanks at the kneeling dwarf. "Thanks."
DM Carbide |
Nothing appears to have noticed the giants' shouts...at least, not yet. Perhaps they were drowned out by the screams that occasionally filter into the chamber from outside, interspersed with guttural laughter.
The party finds nothing of particular interest on the bodies or in the room, besides a strong indication that more than two giants habitually slept here.
There are two other sets of double doors in the room, in addition to the door to the outside.
Kronug the Merciless |
Jarrek should have CLW from his Oracle level. Oracles know either all the Cure spells or all the Inflict spells of levels that they can cast. Does he have any Oracle spells left for the day?
Trianne Ashton |
Trianne comes forward from her position at rear guard, comfortable enough with the fact they haven't drawn any attention from behind them.
Last CLW wand tally was post 3010 with 17 charges. So I think Haftor's wand at 9 charges is at least close to accurate. No other healing consumables from Trianne.
The Stone Fist |
Haftor does a bit more healing for Jarrek.
clw 1d8 + 5 ⇒ (5) + 5 = 10 and 1 Fervor 2d6 ⇒ (4, 6) = 10. I'm down to 4 Fervors, which I can also use to channel 2d6 by spending 2 uses, and what's left on the wand.
EDIT: The dicebot is merciful.
Jarrek Everstand |
Jarrek has 2 lvl 1 Oracle spells left but they seem better used for Divine Favor and Prot from Evil. Haftor's healing puts Jarrek at 34/39 which is good enough for moving on right now but healing-wise we're in a pretty bad spot for continuing deeper into the fort, aren't we?
Jarrek rolls his shoulders and stands up grinning. "Ha! You fixed my headache, Haftor! Best I've felt all day!" He looks at the door. [b]"Let's go find some more giants to kill!"
Kronug the Merciless |
"Let's be tactical," advises Kronug.
"Catch them unawares if we can. If not, use bottlenecks and ranged attacks.
If we pay attention to tactics, we can make our remaining healing last.
I am happy to take the lead as I have heavy armor, and a shield, and training against giants, but even so I will try to avoid giving them easy shots at me."
Kronug's AC is 28 against giants even before factoring in his teamwork feats; he can hold the line in a formation with allies behind him, as that makes his AC 31-33. Pretty sure we can do more of the fort if we use some caution, but we will need a lot more healing if we take a very aggressive posture.
"Or not. That is how I'm going to fight them. You can do what you wish."
"Let's try this room to the southwest."
Kronug will search the door for traps before opening it.
Perception: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
DM Carbide |
Kronug finds nothing out of the ordinary on the door.
It opens onto a large circular chamber, mostly filled with a huge iron cage. Crates, chests, statues, paintings, and other art objects fill the space between the cage and the walls of the room. Inside the cage, a large piece of furniture sits under a cloth drapery of some sort. Also inside the cage are a pair of large creatures, with vaguely humanoid heads, leonine manes and bodies, long tails with spikes embedded in their tips, and clipped draconic-looking wings.
As soon as the door opens and they register that you're not giants, they begin to beg for release. "Please let us out! A terrible giant has imprisoned us, and she starves and mistreats us because we won't do her bidding."
Kronug the Merciless |
Kronug isn't sure what these talking lions are, but he is not particularly soft-hearted. Even as basic lions they would be dangerous, let alone the intelligence, wings, and spiked tails that these ones have. Letting them out seems a risk.
Although he doesn't say anything, his hesitation and posture suggest that he is wary of the creatures.
He waits to see what the others have to say.
Trianne Ashton |
Trianne tilts her head and through her pursed lips says in low tones to her comrades, “I...believe these are manticores. The chimerical elements are very unique, but I’ve never encountered one in the wild before.”
She sidles a little to her left to get a different perspective, eyes narrowing at the oddity that strikes her.
“Why the draped…piece in the cage with them?” she muses quietly.
Do they look particularly starved or mistreated?
K:Arcana: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
DM Carbide |
Their wings have had the membranes sliced, and Trianne figures that they're unable to fly until the damage is healed.
Trianne Ashton |
“Errr…” Trianne hesitates. “I don’t know manticores that well, but any starving animal is not something to take lightly.”
She gives it a moment’s thought and her mouth quirks in distaste as she glances at the fallen giants. “We could solve one of their problems, if we’re feeling that generous.”
Jarrek Everstand |
Anybody have Sense Motive? Jarrek doesn't. I assume manticores can't be trusted but Jarrek doesn't know anything about them.
Also Appraise- anybody want to make an estimate of the stuff piled up around the room?
Jarrek shrugs. "I don't like the idea of leaving anything for the giants to play with but," he turns to whisper to the others "can we trust these things?"
Kronug the Merciless |
Anybody have Sense Motive? Jarrek doesn't. I assume manticores can't be trusted but Jarrek doesn't know anything about them.
Nobody has ranks in it, but it can be used untrained in which case it is just a Wisdom check. I tend to consider that it needs a minute of conversation which is why I didn't roll it already.
Seamus MacWirst |
The alchemist swaggers up to the cage, So Man-ti-cores, what can you tell us of this place? Other than there's two giants in that room, [b]he jerks his thumb in the direction of the dead giants, [b]An' they got you in a cage in this room? Help us, and we can maybe help you....
The Stone Fist |
Haftor squints suspiciously at the creatures. ”These look like beasties to me, and I don’t trust them.”
He waits for a response from them before taking any action, though.
DM Carbide |
"It wasn't them alone that put us into this cage--it was the giant woman! Beware of her, she's dangerous. If you let us out, though, we'll help you fight her even though we can't fly."
