DM Brainiac, it doesn't make any difference in this combat, but Zhi's Initiative Modifier is +6

"More ooze things? What the hells do we do with them? They're huge!"

Not sure what to do with these things. Zhi's weapon attacks will be almost useless if they have ooze traits. She'd use AoE spells, but that will probably kill the prisoner. Any ideas?

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

"We need to get the prisoner out of the line of fire, then I can heal... them. If someone can swoop in and grab the prisoner while the rest of the team keeps these slime-things busy..." says Zileska, letting the thought trail off.

Game Concluded

"Yeah, I could try that," Zhi answers, looking over the horrendous things. "I'm not too strong, though. Maybe Sara might have a better chance." She eyes the taller woman. "How'd you like to be like a speedy, invisible, flying Valkyrie?" she asks with a grin.

Holding back from the creatures, Zhi begins her enchantments.

haste to begin with.

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

Zhi:
{"I'm fine."} She backs it up with a smile, although it does seem a little forced.

Melodie steps forward and focuses her will on the sludge gnawing on Iphalt-C.

Hold Monster, -4 to will save, attack rolls etc. Gets +2 to the save if normally immune but can be affected. 50% chance each round for the spell to work if it fails the save. See Psychic Inception Stare.

Sara nods at the plan, ready for the rescue.

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

Zileska preps for Sara to return with Iphalt-C.

Ready to cast heal.

The ooze gnawing on Iphalt-C pauses long enough to hurl a spell your way. Shadows swirl around Zileska as an image of her greatest fear looms in her mind!

The other one surges forward towards Sara, negative energy surging through its body!

Harm, Touch: 1d20 + 20 ⇒ (19) + 20 = 39

Zileska is hit with phantasmal killer. Will DC 19 to disbelieve, if she fails, Fortitude DC 19 or die. Sara is hit with harm: 120 negative energy damage, Will DC 21 for half. This damage can't reduce her below 1 HP.

The ooze manages to resist Melodie's spell with a supreme effort of will!

Will: 1d20 + 11 - 4 ⇒ (18) + 11 - 4 = 25

Everybody but Melodie may act!

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

Though the ooze succumbs to Melodie's spell, it manages to resist its effects for the time being...

Worried at what these creatures could do, Maria nevertheless headed into the fray.

Not sure how far away they are but Maria'll either move or charge the nearest enemy to attack it, using her swift action to apply Studied Combat to it. The bonus damage from Studied Combat is precision damage so I've left it off but the attack bonus still works.

"Do you want to go now or would you like to fly as well?" Zhi asks with a smirk, unaware of the powerful magic already flying around them.

Rolling Sara's Will save since she forgot to roll it.

Will: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (18) + 7 = 25

Sara resists the worst of the negative energy as it wracks her body. Zhi makes her disappear, then she dashes over to the stricken Iphalt-C and wrestles the arbiter free of the ooze's grasp. Unfortunately, the oozes are able to sense Sara despite her invisibility, and both lash out at her as she moves past them. The brawler is battered, but succeeds in protecting the inevitable as she brings her back to Zileska. The priest heals Iphalt-C back to full health.

Maria runs up and stabs the nearest ooze, though it doesn't seem to hurt the thing much. It retaliates with two swift slams, but the tiefling's shield protects her from harm. The other ooze, denied its prize, slithers up to the tiefling to attack her as well. This one manages to land one good slam, leeching the lifeforce from Maria.

33 physical and 20 negative energy damage to Sara. (She's take 113 damage total including the harm.) 27 physical and 7 negative energy damage to Maria. Sara and Maria each will take 1d6 points of negative energy damage at the start of its turn each round. This effect can be stopped via magical healing, and otherwise stops on its own 3 rounds after the initial slam attack.

Chance of Hold: 1d100 ⇒ 20

The ooze Melodie targeted seizes up, the magic taking effect after a short delay!

Everybody is up!

Cursing in pain, and recognising the tell-tale cold feel of negative energy, she stepped back from the creature and activated the Band of the Crusader's Alliance, the Eye of Aroden symbol flashing for a moment as its protective energies wrapped around her. It wouldn't do anything for the blunt force of the creature's blows, but it would at least act as a buffer.

5-foot step back, using the Band to cast Death Ward on herself, which should nullify any further negative energy damage for the rest of this fight.

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

DM, as an immediate action, I'm gonna sack incessant buzzing and force the ooze to re-roll the hit that scored a crit on Zhi, now with a -1 penalty. Not the confirmation roll - the actual hit.

Divine Interference feat:

Divine Interference: You can convert a spell to interfere with an enemy’s attack.
Prerequisites: Divine spellcaster, caster level 10th.
Benefit: As an immediate action, when an enemy within 30 feet hits an ally with an attack, you can sacrifice a prepared divine spell or (if you are a spontaneous caster) an unused spell slot and make the enemy reroll the attack roll. The second attack roll takes a penalty equal to the level of the spell you sacrifice. You must sacrifice a spell of 1st-level or higher to use this ability. Whether or not the second attack is successful, you cannot use this effect on the same creature again for 1 day.

Okay!

Reroll: 1d20 + 17 - 1 ⇒ (16) + 17 - 1 = 32

D'oh! Still a hit, unfortunately. The crit didn't confirm before so even though it's not a critical threat anymore, the damage doesn't change.

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

Ah. I thought it had confirmed, so I thought it would be better to at least try to force it down from a crit. Zhi's stat bar says she's only AC 27 so I thought the crit confirmation hitting AC 30 did the trick.

The stat bar didn't take into account some of her defensive spells. According to her post before the previous combat, her current AC is 32. It was still a good idea to try to negate the hit--the ooze just rolled high again.

Game Concluded

Sorry about that, Zil. Zhi's stat bar shows her default state without any short-term buffs. I forgot to post her buff summary with her last action.

"And that confirms why I don't do that more often," Zhi mutters to herself as her spell flops. She curses under her breath.

She moves and stabs at the nearest undead ooze in annoyance.

You have time to heal up or cast other spells before heading inside.

You head into the Hall of Final Deeds and make your way to the north end of the large building. A series of private counseling rooms and meeting halls surrounded the large ritual apse at the building’s north end. However, much of this chamber has collapsed, creating a precarious ramp of rubble that descends into darkness below.

Standing at the top of the ramp is an ugly creature that has a boar-like head with short antlers, a thick bullish body covered in spines, and cloven hooves on its stumpy legs. It is idly bouncing a corpse on its sonut, but when it sees you, it tosses it aside. It bellows something in the Aklo tongue as it prepares to attack!

Aklo:
"At last, more weaklings!"

Knowledge (arcana) DC 22:
This magical beast is a catoblepas. The catoblepas is an aggressive beast at the best of times, willing to knock down trees, fences, even small houses to eat whatever it finds interesting, be that meal plant or animal or human being. "One of my extracts will let you understand all languages," Maria remarked, drawing a small vial from her pouch, "never had a chance to use it before now. Anyone in particular want it or should I do the honours?"

I've had comprehend languages prepped for about seven or eight levels by now and this is the first time a use for it has come up. :P

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

Zileska helps to patch up Sara after the second ooze is destroyed, while Iphalt-C is explaining.

Cure critical wounds: 4d8 + 14 ⇒ (3, 7, 2, 7) + 14 = 33

She declines the protection from chaos.

My vote is for Maria or Zileska to use the extract

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

I think Maria needs it so that the creature can understand her.

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

The issue isn't understanding it. I can do that - I need Tongues or something else that will let me speak to it...

Melodie closes her eyes for a moment to unleash her own innate magic but shakes her head at Maria. "Unless that will work on the creature its not enough. I need it to understand me." Comprehend Languages as SLA.

Reduced to pantomime, she glances at Iphalt-C. "What can I do with this creature? It'll do as I command unless someone attacks it. Is there a place it can be restrained? An animal pound or some such?"

Mel is happy to coax the creature out, but I don't know if that will help...

"If you turn it over to Sayashto's authorities, I am certain they can accommodate it in an appropriate facility," Iphalt-C says. "Alternately, my functionalities include truespeech. I can speak to it and translate your commands to it if you desire."
