RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

"We can deal with this!" Melodie says determindly, upon being shown one of the posters by her agents. "These need to be removed as quickly as possible. Bartelby! Find out who did this!"

Melodie herself hits the campaign trail, working to undo the damage done by the posters.

Personal Fluff - Brainiac:

Zhi shuts the door and turns to survey the empty sleeping chamber.

I should be talking to people - helping with the campaign.

She notes the size of the open space and nods to herself. It should be large enough. Pulling a piece of dark chalk and some jewelry from her bag, she sets it aside. She traces out a pattern on the wooden floor and fills the edges with symbols that feel right. She drops the glittering items into the middle and then sits down on the floor next to the circle cross-legged. She closes her eyes and takes a deep breath, settling herself before closing her eyes and sending out a mental call.

Eventually she can feel another presence in the room and she opens her eyes to view her 'guest'.

planar inquiry - summoning a garuda

"My name is d'Valois Mai Zhi. I have requested your presence and have offered recompense for your time," she says, respecting the proper decorum. "In return, I wish to know ..." Her voice breaks a bit, but she clears her throat. "I need to know the fate of Mai Zhen - my father. Is he alive, or ...?" She can't bring herself to speak the alternative. "Where is he? Find out and return to me."

This is entirely your call, Brainiac. If he's dead, he's dead. If not, I'll leave it up to you where/what's going on with him. Zhi's reached the power point where she has the means to try to find out what happened to him, so I can't see her not utilizing it.

Zhi:
Hours: 1d4 ⇒ 1
Caster Level: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (9) + 11 = 20

The garuda cocks its bird like head. "I will do my best to find out the answer to your inquiry."

It disappears into the city for an hour, returning with a grim expression on its face. "I have an answer for you, but you may not like it. A man matching your father's description was recently seen in the city of Oppara on your home world. Rumors indicate that he was in the company of members of an organization known as the Brotherhood of Silence. Whether he was working with or against them, though, remains unclear."

Brainiac:

Having been prepared for the worst, Zhi feels a weight lift from her shoulders as tears begin trickling down her cheeks.

"You have my gratitude. May I have your name and permission to call on you in the future?" she asks, attempting to maintain the forms.

~~~~~
~~~~~

Melodie:
As she moves through the city conversing with her agents, Melodie feels a burst of excitement from her wife.

{"He's alive! Father's alive!"}

Zhi:
The garuda inclines his head. "I am Krishan. Provide me with the proper offerings each time and I will happily answer your call."

As you prepare to hit the campaign trail again, you notice several notices posted on buildings around the district. Each one bears a familiar sigil--the deaths head moth symbol of Urgathoa, the very same brand that Sara bore up until recently.

SARA BURKE IS A KNOWN GRAVE ROBBER AND RESURRECTIONIST
SHE WAS CONVICTED OF THESE CRIMES IN THE CITY OF OPPARA ON GOLARION
IS THIS THE TYPE OF PERSON WE WANT SERVING ON SAYASHTO'S COUNCIL?

Sara loses 1 Facet Rank and 2 Facet Points for Heroism.

The graverobber pulls one off the wall as they pass, staring at it with the same intensity earned by Taldaris' lilies. Her face betrays no emotion.

Melodie d'Valois wrote:

"We can deal with this!" Melodie says determindly, upon being shown one of the posters by her agents. "These need to be removed as quickly as possible. Bartelby! Find out who did this!"

Melodie herself hits the campaign trail, working to undo the damage done by the posters.

"No, no, leave them. I'll deal with it. Find out who posted them, sure, but no need to worry yourself tearing them down. I'll deal with it, Mels. I want to be the one to fix this."

---

Wearing a tight but modest black dress and a funerary veil, Sara gathers a large crowd before a wall covered in the anti-her propaganda, a crowd including many of the community organizers she has been treating with, whatever press agents she could cajole into coming, and anyone else.

"I have not brought you here to deny these accusations," she gestures at the Death's Head Moths on the walls behind her, "nor to explain them away. I am guilty of graverobbing, and of selling the dead, and, I'm afraid, of a great deal more. It is my shame, and it is who I am."

She takes a poster in hand and pulls either end, snapping it taut, displaying it. "But since it has been made relevant, I do think it should stay relevant, and that means providing context for what all this means. You deserve to hear the truth."

The vain, muscular anarchist dabs a single tear out of her eye with great care, so as not to futz up her makeup.

"I love where I am from very much, but there is no opportunity there for the masses. The entire country exists to serve the nobility, without thought, without any other options. If you are born poor and want out of the squalor, you do anything you can. I was born poorer than most, and to help my family survive, I did everything I could. I fought, I stole, and yes, I did sell the bodies of the dead."

She lets the murmuring subside before continuing. "I was caught and punished. I was imprisoned for three years and the mark of necromancy, the unholy symbol of Urgathoa, was cut into my flesh, to let all who treated with me know of my crimes. I do believe I was successfully rehabilitated, but my imprisonment exposed me to deep flaws in a system that I once worshiped, a society I once dreamed I would one day reach the highest points in, that in it I would be rich and noble and happy.

"But that system is broken and corrupt. As it stands today, it is set up to violently enforce the status quo, and those who attempt to break it are faced with huge levies and taxes, seizing their gains and attempts at bettering themselves, and giving them to their ruling lords. There is a reason why I needed to steal, to profit from the dead, just to keep my family alive."

She takes a deep breath and pulls back tears, fanning her face.

"Since getting out of prison, I've never again heard from my family. I have no proof or assurance that they live, that they were able to make it without me. My mother was crippled, my brothers, too young to do much in the way of work. I don't pray often, but whenever I do, I pray that they live still, that they did not starve to death in some forgotten alleyway, and if they died, they were granted the mercy of a quick, death.

"I'm sorry, I-" She leans on a companion's shoulder for a time, crying openly, before pulling herself together and continuing.

"I have paid my penance. I am no longer that woman. And I refuse to let my fellows suffer as I have suffered; no one should live to be as desperate as I. If elected, I will fight for the poor and weary, the oppressed, marginalized and forgotten. I will work to expose corruption, and will not resist necessary change."

Heroism, Rank 10 again, Organize Protest, Dip, Qarit Bonus: 1d20 + 44 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 44 + 2 = 60

Sara's public acknowledgment seems to have exactly the effect she hoped it would. The crowd rallies to her side, turning what might have been a crippling scandal into a sympathetic victory.

Tsemani Will: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (11) + 7 = 18

Thanks to Zileska's pox of rumors, many among the populace assume Tsemani is behind the posters' distribution. A small group even goes so far as to accost the medusa on the street, hampering her cause.

Melodie's agents are unable to prove a link between Tsemani's campaign and the posters. They find out only that several nondescript men and women were seen plasterin them around town. One witness swears they spotted a tiny floating eye watching them work...

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

Mel:
"Yes, I can ask questions of Calistria, or of one of Her divine servants. And I intend to do so. The kind of sympathetic magic for which these objects is useful doesn't go hand in hand with that, though."

Basically 'having an item' keyed to someone is only explicitly useful for a small number of spells and I don't think it will affect my divination, commune, or prognostication spells.

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

When Meloide's agents return with their intelligence the campaign manager sinks into deep thought.

"This isn't the first time we've heard about floating eyes. What kind of creature could do that to itself?" She poses this question to Bartelby, Maria, Zileska and anyone else she thinks might be able to help identify the creature/phenomenon.

"If it's a creature then I think it must be part of this group we're facing." She explains. "It's been seen too many times at places where we've been campaigning and it's influence has always been malign. We need to know more."

-----------------

Zhi:
{"Really? Here on Axis?"} Suddenly Zhi can hear the change in Melodie's mental tone. {"How do you know?"}

Melodie:

That Evening ...

Melodie:
When Melodie arrives at the rented room that evening she finds her wife pacing nervously across the floor.

"I didn't feel right talking about this unless we were face to face," she says. "I decided to use magic that ... that calls out ..." She harumphs and walks over to the middle of the floor and pulls a small rug aside. Underneath it on the floor is a fairly simple summoning circle - the chalk lines slightly smeared from the geometric floor covering.

"I summoned an outsider," she says simply. "I didn't want to tell you because some people don't react well to summoning extra-planer beings."

She looks around sheepishly. "He was a garuda and his name is Krishan." Her eyes search to floor and one hand moves up subconsciously to finger the collar around her neck. "And it took the last of my gold - I'm broke."

The Next Day

Zhi seems especially vitalized the next day, ready to seat one of her friends on the local council seat.

So how many Persona rolls will we get?

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

Zhi:
"My money is your money, you know that." Melodie says, pulling her wife into her arms. "Unless you'd like to be a kept woman for a while in which case I could make you earn it?"

She nods towards the summoning circle. "Why didn't you tell me? I could have been here with you. I thought we didn't keep secrets like this anymore..."

Zileska's divinations reveal that life still grows within Zhi's womb. Her short term divination yields the reply, "Stay the course." Her long-term prognostication is a bit more cryptic: "The benighted child with two mothers shall bask in its matrilineal heritage."

***

You campaign in earnest over the next four days, working to secure Sara's election to Sayashto's council.

You can take 3 Persona phases during this time.

Melodie:
"It wasn't a ... a secret," Zhi says defensively, her eyes shifting away. "It was just a means that some people don't approve of and I didn't see the means as relevant to the information it provided. So I wanted to tell you about it face to face."

She moves closer to her wife and presses the slight curves of her new 'chest' up against the taller woman. "So tell me more about this 'kept woman' business," she continues, eager to change the subject. "What would a innocent young girl have to do to earn some coin? Word about town is that the Lady d'Valois is into debaucheries of all sorts." She pulls her head back a little and bats her dark eyelashes. "There are just some things that I won't do."

Zhi leans back in and places a soft kiss on Melodie's neck, just at the top of her shoulder. Her tongue then sneaks out and trails upwards toward her chin.

As the campaign progresses, Tsemani receives a huge (and suspicious) donation from an anonymous donor, allowing her to host a major gathering to attract votes. The rumors that had been swirling about Sara's rival come to an end--it would seem that Zileska's curse has been lifted somehow as well. The medusa does her best to make up for her prior setbacks, working to close the gap in the race for councilor.

Melodie's agents aren't able to learn much about the floating eyes, only that they have been spotted with increasing frequency around Sayashto in the past few weeks, especially in proximity to campaign events for both Sara and Tsemani. Rumors suggest they all might belong to a single creature, sending them out to spy on the proceedings for an unknown purpose.

After a day of heavy stumping for Sara ...

"Ok, something needs to be addressed," Zhi says as the ladies finish their most recent rabble-rousing. She stops and turns to her wife. "This tunic is really starting to bind a little," she says, reaching down to attempt to adjust the fabric. Where the dark brown material is normally slightly loose; Over her belly that's beginning to round, it's stretched out of shape.

"Now, being that I'm a 'kept woman'," she continues with a smirk. "And have maintained my end of the bargain by fulfilling your lecherous desires," she looks Melodie up and down with a slight lick of her lips. "I think it's time that you took me clothes shopping." Her hand reaches down and pulls the tunic up slightly, exposing her smooth skin. "And if you've got any idea what to do about this..." She gestures at the waistband of her breeches which is shoved down below the swell. "I'm all ears. It won't be long before I'll be running around with no pants on."

She looks around at the others.

"Who wants to go clothes shopping with us?"

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

"I'm always up for clothes shopping, though I'm not sure about finding things I like here," says Zileska.

Game Concluded

"I'm not sure if I could wear something to your taste, Zil," Zhi says with a giggle. "At least not out in public." She gives Mel a sideways look and turns a shade of pink. "And I wouldn't be so sure that they don't have ... I mean, they can't all be prudes here, can they?"

ADVENTURE PATH COMPLETE

"I'm sure they have a fine line of perfectly-tailored and fitted lingerie that is mathematically precise and guaranteed to cause arousal in 95% of all cases of seduction," says Zhi. "But I prefer something a bit more visceral."

Game Concluded

"I don't know ..." Zhi counters. "I saw something in a leather worker's shop the other day that was ... well, it was all just straps and everything was ... nothing was actually covered." She glances down at herself. "I mean the straps went everywhere, but didn't cover anything. That seems pretty ... uh..." She flushes again and glances at her wife. "Maybe we could ... um ... go by there?"

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

Melodie's face is absolutely impassive, her ability to control her own blushing has improved immeasurably since the first days of the group working together.

"Well why not?" She finally says. "If it will make my girl happy..." She gently rubs the back of her wife's neck, going for the spot that she knows sends Zhi weak at the knees. "I don't think visceral is quite their style," She agrees with Zileska as they walk. "Am I the only one that finds the idea of 'mathematically precise' lingerie more than a little disturbing?"

Zhi:
{"You in that outfit you jsut described on the other hand...."}

Game Concluded

Zhi closes her eyes and relaxes against Melodie's ministrations. A faint groan escapes her lips before her eyes snap open. "Hey!" she says removing the woman's hand from her neck and stepping slightly away from the changeling. "You're trying to distract me."

She holds up a finger in protest. "You're not getting out of buying me new clothes that easy." She ticks points off on her fingers. "First; new clothes. Second ..." She flushes just a bit again. "leather shop. And then play ... if I like what you buy me." Her lip quirks up in a teasing grin and she turns and begins walking off towards the market district with a little extra sway in her narrow hips.

Melodie:
{"The woman had lots of variants, but I know exactly the one I want. Maybe I'll just have you give me the money and I'll surprise you with it."}

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

Zhi:
{"You are remarkably bossy... perhaps you need reminding about who's in charge."}

"Well I like surprises." Melodie says with a smile. "And why would I be trying to get out of clothes shopping? You're making it sound like I don't like clothes shopping. I use a new outfit or two as well."

Zhi:
{"I'm going shopping too now..."}

RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.

After a few moments thought Melodie pursues her wife, fishes in her pocket and pulls out a small bag which she hands over to Zhi. "There you go sweetie. Should be plenty there for you to have fun. Zil, you coming with me or with Zhi? We can meet up later after the evening review meeting with the campaign."

Zhi:
{"I want to see what you're buying, modeled."}

With her wife funded and dispatched on her own trip Melodie heads into the cities shopping district in search of garments of her own. She spends some time in a clothing store, making specific purchases and paying well over the odds to have it done quickly. She also drops into one of Axis's rarest shops - a toy shop, and follows it up with a trip to a hostelry.

By the time she returns for the evening strategy meeting Melodie is clearly tired but seems very happy. She smiles most of the way through the meeting and even Bartelby seems slightly unnerved by how much praise he gets.

Once the meeting is over Melodie takes her wife's hand and lets very little stand in her way of getting her wife back to their lodgings.

"We can meet up later after the evening review meeting with the campaign."

At the mental request, Zhi's eyes widen just a bit. "After the meeting, right?"

~~~~
When Zhi rejoins the ladies for the campaign meeting, she's no longer wearing her traditional simple breeches and tunic. Her legs are now covered with airy pants of a thin dark green cloth. They're tied loosely at her waist with a light cord just under her belly bump. The legs hang down over the top of her tall boots. A light top, black with a cherry blossom pattern covers the upper portion, but it's clear that it was designed for a man as the chest is open down dangerously low. The sleeves widen out towards the forearms, but close with tight cuffs at the wrists. It hangs low down her thighs.
As she moves, the low and open neckline reveals that she's wearing ... something ... underneath it as leather straps make teasing appearances. The gem-covered collar that she's been wearing lately is still present, but, again, there's something attached to it that descends under her top.
She smirks at her wife.
Melodie:
{"I can't wait to show you what else I've spent your gold on."}
RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.
"You look lovely." Melodie says, greeting her wife with a kiss. "Concentrating is going to be difficult now!" And indeed through most of the meeting her eyes keep sliding to her wife and drinking in her new look.
Game Concluded
Zhi seems to take pleasure in distracting her wife. This is evident by the fact that every time Melodie looks at her, she notices that the rogue is biting her lip and has one hand slipped inside the front of her very low-cut top.
Melodie:
{"I'm going to have to take this out soon. Wouldn't want 'little bit' to choke on it."} Her mental voice is humming with pleasure.
RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.
Zhi:
{"Enjoy it while it lasts then."} Melodie replies, obviously not looking at her wife this time. {"You could get it done again afterwards?"}
The next morning, you set off in search of Taldaris's missing ring. Due to their ingenuity, resourcefulness, and gregariousness, monkeys have long served as Abadar’s sacred animal, and troops of primates live throughout the Eternal City of Axis. A troop of tamarins called the Order of the Eaves has long claimed Sayashto’s roofs as their territory, both due to their posturing bravado and the leadership of the venerable Lord Squire Saip. Despite the monkeys’ occasional act of mischief, locals respect the Order of the Eaves and regularly leave out small offerings. In return, the primates help watch for criminals, deliver messages, and perform minor errands.
Although less ubiquitous than they once were, the monkeys are easy to find and hail. Many citizens also know a few simple hand signals that the monkeys recognize, including “leader” and “talk,” that they are happy to show you. A tamarin observes attentively, and after being given a snack, it runs off to deliver the message.
A few hours later, a large simian entourage approaches you. Their leader, a wizened flameruffed tamarin wearing a holy symbol of Abadar, holds out its hand in greeting. "I am Lord Squire Saip, leader of the Order of the Eaves," the monkey says in Common. "I understand you have requested an audience?"
RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.
Melodie looks to Sara to lead the conversation - this is another opportunity that might aid the campaign if properly handled.
Game Concluded
Zhi watches the monkeys suspiciously, keeping her hand close to her weapons.
Melodie:
{"I don't like monkeys. They're all little thieves."}
RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.
Zhi:
{"Coming from a bigger thief..."} The amusement is plain in Melodie's mental voice.
Game Concluded
Zhi turns to glare at her wife.
Melodie:
{"So, since I'm a thief I have to trust other thieves? That makes no sense whatsoever."}
She then looks back to watch the monkeys.
Melodie:
{"And it's so comforting that you equate me with furry little flea-bitten rodents."}
Game Concluded
As the silence stretches out, Zhi takes a half-step forward, ignoring the look she knows Melodie is giving her.
"We're trying to locate a ring. It belonged to a resident here by the name of Taldaris and he's gone missing. We really need to find him. Someone told us that you know where everything goes that goes somewhere else and we were hoping that you would know where it's at."
She does her best to hide her distaste of the foul little creatures.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32
Lord Squire Saip sputters with outrage. "Taldaris? Missing? This cannot stand! We will do all in our power to find our good friend. But alas! The ring you speak of has been stolen from me! It is in the clutches of the filthy Crowntop Coup!"
The other monkeys hoot and holler at the mention of that name. "Those raucous cockatiels ruin everything! In the course of a month, they've caused a mess by raiding yashtoma seeds left out to dry, cawing triumphantly at all hours, and defecating on their critics. Our order attempted to chase off the intruders only to be outsmarted at every turn, and in the most recent skirmish, the Crowntop Coup made off with the great gift that Taldaris bequeathed to me. We are utterly flustered and defeated!
"The mischievous birds are far too formidable for us to fight. But if you can defeat them, the ring is yours."
Zhi remembers hearing about the Crowntop Coup during her initial information gathering around Sayashto. The council recently issued a decree that excuses inhabitants in acts of self-defense against the birds, and enterprising hunters can secure a 250 gp bounty for chasing off or killing the birds.
Game Concluded
Zhi blinks for a moment.
"The Crowntop Coup? Stole the ring?" She blinks again. "From you?" She looks back at the rest of the ladies and then returns her attention to Saip. "Very well, then. Thank you for your time."
Walking away from the troop Zhi shakes her head. "I heard about the birds earlier, but I didn't think they were serious. A bunch of little birds? Really? If you want to eliminate a flock of birds ... one big fireball and ... whoosh!" Her hands rise to emphasize her solution.
Did she hear where they were located previously? Or will we need to search for them?
You'll have to ask around as they move throughout the district, but you should be able to find them relatively quickly.
Game Concluded
Zhi contacts Tarina Izbasa as soon as she can and sets her agents to locate the current whereabouts of the flock.
RETIRED - happily married and ruling Taldor.
Melodie doesn't say anything at Zhi taking the lead, her wife's impatience has been building with her pregnancy and the mesmerist knows that its better to simply not interfere.
Most of her agents in Axis are busy campaigning, but Melodie searches back through the rumour notes from the past week or so, trying to see if her agents have encountered the Crowntop Coup recently while her few remaining agents head out to gather more information.
Gather Info: 1d20 + 35 ⇒ (7) + 35 = 42
It doesn't take long to track down the Crowntop Coup. Melodie's agents don't have much to add beyond what the monkeys told you, although they do mention that the flock of cockatiels appears to have some sort of hivemind that allows them intelligent thought, speech, and the ability to cast psychic spells. The hivemind likely has one bird that serves as a "nexus"--if that one is dealt with, the others should be disrupted!
As you approach a tall building on the outskirts of the district, you spot the cockatiels--hundreds of the colorful birds perch and flit about, filling the air with their loud cawing!
Game Concluded
Zhi looks over the cacophonous cloud and sighs. "So do we try to talk to this ... what did they call it? A 'hive mind'?" she asks. "Do we talk to this hive mind, or ...?" her nimble hands make an expansive gesture similar to what she did before. Her lips turn up in a smile. It's clear which one she thinks will be more effective.
"Observe and find the nexus bird I think." Melodie suggests. "Then we hit that bird as hard and quickly as we all can!"
"I think diplomacy is not out of the question," says Sara, more in her wheelhouse with birds than she was with monkeys.
She whistles and keeps a finger out to summon a nearby bird and requests, "Hello pretty birdy. We come in peace, take me to your leader."
A half dozen cockatiels alight on Sara's arm. "Damn right, we're pretty!" they chirp in eerie unison. "Smart, too! We rule this city! What do you want with the Crowntop Coup?" Dozens more of the birds squawk and circle overhead while the rest watch from the rooftops.
Among this latter group, Melodie spots one cockatiel wearing a ring on its head like a crown. The ringshaped like a golden lion's face with a ruby in its mouth. This must be Taldaris's ring--and that must be the nexus bird!
