Bruendor tore forward, taking a heavy blow from a writhing tentacle as he ran. Both Lefrik and Bruendor landed strikes, though their weapons were doing less damage than they should. Even Lefrik's outsider bane sword seemed to be fairly ineffective. Calla's abberation-bane arrows, on the other, were very definitely effective. The creature screamed as the arrows punched through armor-like chitin to tear at the soft flesh beneath. The creture screams again as the flames from Kelendra's spell catch part of it, though the cold black blood sheeting off its body hissed away into foul-smelling steam as it absorbed much of the damage. The deva's spell wasn't nearly as effective, its magics washing away as it failed to effect the creature's native spell resistance.
The worm retaliated, lashing out with a rain of cold black blood that burned where it contacted skin, then with the tentacles. Two each drove in on Lefrik and Bruendor, tearing into their skin, then wrapping around them and lifting them high into the air.
Then, as all hope seems lost, an enormous earth elemental popped into existence behind the neolithid.

Crushed in the grip of the creature's tentacles, Bruendor and Lefrik squirm and writhe, desperately trying to get free. The neolithid raised them higher, it's maw flowering open to reveal hundreds of serrated teeth and a spined gullet that reeked of rotten meat and vegetation. Frantically Bruendor slashed at the tentacle holding him, digging deep wounds into the beast's chitinous flesh, but the tentacle just squeezed harder, driving the breath from the dwarf's lungs. Kelendra cast her spell, but felt it slide of the monster's spell protections, the magical energy cooking away like a bead of water on a hot griddle. Anklebiter's magical missiles hit the creature, but they were like gnats biting a bullette.
As Bruendor was about to be thrust into the creature's maw, the neolithid shuddered, swaying side to side. An enormous rock elemental was pounding on the creature's back. Then, Bruendor felt himself falling free as the deva hacked free the tentacle holding him . He hit the ground hard, but managed to roll out of the way of the torrent of freezing cold blood pouring from the stump of the severed limb. Lefrik, too, felt himself falling to the ground as a trio of arrow buried themselves deep in the neolithid's chest, finding a chink in the armor that led to the heart, or some other vital organ. Calla lowered her bow in satisfaction as she watched the beast fall to the floor of the fungi palace, keeping her balance as the ground beneath her trembled at its fall.

Yeah, I was...not in a good place.
Bruendor rolled to a defensive position as the tentacle's grip on him slackened, watching as the beast toppled, crashing into the stone and sending shockwaves through the rock. He sighed in relief, and began coughing profusely. Wet, hacking retorts came from his lungs, and he stared grimly as the spittle he issued was crimson. Indeed, his chin was dripping with his blood, and he could feel the bruising already forming around his chest and waist where the neothelid's tentacle had nearly crushed him into a paste.

Anklebiter the Insane |

"Calla did superbly," Anklebiter says, inclining his head to the acerbic Half-Elf. "Far better than I did; my spells were like water to that thing, for all the harm they did."
Regarding the earth elemental, he shrugs helplessly. "I don't speak its language either. It's something I need to learn. Maybe next time I call for its aid, I can convey our thanks. I think I'll be calling on this being plenty, yet; as deep under the surface as we are, it is easily the most powerful elemental ally I can call on."

DM Bigrin |

Sorry for the silence. Been an interesting week. 1 bar of phone signal every few hours does not make for the most effective communication. Man, I don't see how my in-laws live like that.
With the neolithid slain, there still remains the original purpose of your trip here, the warding glyph. You can feel its presence on the other side of the giant mushroom, but the neolithid's body, curled in death, makes it difficult to get past. Anklebiter can fly over, of course, but the others took longer to rig a rope and sling system, to get over the giant creature and safely to the other side. Allevrah truly picked the placement of these glyphs and their guardians well.
In an alcove on the far side of the mushroom sat the next glyph. As you approached, you could hear the water droplets oozing from the fungi walls. Scuffs of feet sounded like thunderclaps, and when Lefrik cleared his throat, it sounded as if the world had exploded. This must be the Glyph of Vigilance. It resembled the mushroom it inhabited, looking gray-green and spongy, and the ribbon of arcane symbols that swirled around it were darker hues of the same. The entire thing had the air of a cocked crossbow, with tension on the string ready to fire a warning shot.
“Blessed is he who alerts his master to wrongdoing, that punishment may be swift and severe.”
