Malthir Pre-Combat...:
Then I would down my 3 minute potion of evil now, even if it cost me a few rounds of duration while things develop then draw my sword and exit the crate as you stated.

Noted.

Does a witch's hex have verbal or somatic components? I've checked the SRD and searched the boards but I cannot find anything. From what I read, they are more akin to spell-like abilities than actual spells. DM ruling, please?

As spell-like ability it has verbal and somatic components.

Kalev you will need to make the DC10 Sense Motive check in order to qualify to get your action off. Yelena you will also need to make DC10 Sense Motive check to see the spoiler and qualify for the surprise round. Perhaps it wasn't the best mechanic for resolving it but everyone in the fort is alert and on edge.

I know its not the code phrase - I just figured it would get the job done just as good as shouting "We encountered some fey in the woods that we had to destroy." - with less chance of confusion.

It's the principle! :P

Your Humble Narrator

Kalev Sense Motive-

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19

Kalev, I have your actions for the surprise round.

Yelena Sense Motive-

1d20 ⇒ 8

Well, you were role-playing Yelena as confused so that works out conveniently :).

The fort explodes into activity as Kalev suddenly becomes the size of an Ogre, barely fitting into the common room. Casimir takes the opportunity to drink his potion of protection from evil, while the confused Yelena loses precious seconds. Malthir and Fenna extricate themselves from the crates at the sound of battle.

Note that there are two bandits visibly preparing to fire down from the northwest and northeast watchtowers. Akiros and Auchs are nowhere to be seen.

I was about to warn you they were spies my lord! Dovan insists, drawing his rapier and attempting to tumble through the reach of Kalev to strike at Yelena, stabbing at her viciously through the chest before she can react, sneering in twisted pleasure at her pain.

Round 1 Action:
Kalev moves 10 ft. south, placing the Stag Lord well within his threatened area, while fishing out the Potion of Protection from Evil and drinking it.

Your Humble Narrator

Dovan easily avoids the spear entirely as he gracefully moves across the fight.

He ends his turn next to both Kalev and Yelena.

Fenna and Kalev are up.

EDIT: Except Dovan doesn't know Kalev has combat reflexes... if you have another AOO you can take it Kalev (he left two threatened squares).

I'd just like to point out, that if the owlbear gets loose, Kalev and I will be directly in it's path - not sayin', just sayin!

Yelena uses her slumber hex on the Stag Lord on her turn.

Will DC 16, 3 round duration.

Your Humble Narrator

Kalev- you aren't able to move south as Dovan is blocking your path- you could squeeze to move south-west and take significant penalties if you wish- but even remaining where you are and drinking the potion is provoking an AOO from Dovan. Let me know how you want to proceed as it is important for AOO's etc.

Oh, and no need to spoiler round actions, it would be easier if everyone could see what everyones doing. Marking a round action with bold would be nice though.

Round 1 Actions: Kalev will drink his potion where he stands, hoping to draw an attack of opportunity away from Yelena.

Dovan strikes true with his rapier, twisting it into Kalev's flesh viciously.

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (15) + 9 = 24
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 3 = 9

Leaping up onto the table in front of Fenna, the bandit known as 'Markard' lunges for Fenna with his short sword, but loses his balance and almost falls off the table in his clumsy effort to stab her.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (4) + 3 = 7
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3

Assuming that Dovan's attention is sufficiently occupied with Kalev, Yelena attempts to put a slumber on The Stag Lord, only for the agile Dovan to whirl around and lunge at her with blinding speed, gashing Yelena's arm while she makes the somatic components required.

Combat reflexes, yup.

1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20 AOO
1d6 + 3 ⇒ (1) + 3 = 4

Dismissing the flesh wound. Yelena manages to complete her Slumber hex on the unsuspecting Stag Lord...

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22 Concentration- Success.

Save vs Slumber-

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (3) + 3 = 6

A murmur of worry echoes through the noises of battle in the common room as their mighty, drunken leader falls into Slumber...

Male Human (Mendev) Cavalier (Standard Bearer) 1

Groggily waking up from the battle all around him, Father Avry takes in the situation around him and the threat to his community- a giant half-orc! Lifting his body wearily from his armchair, Avry draws his short sword and steps close to cut Kalev's arm. Still groggy, the blow is clumsy and Kalev dodges it without even seeing the danger.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 2 = 4
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Male Taldan Bard (Dirge, Sound Striker) 2, HP 15/15, AC 16/15/11, CMD 10, F: +2, R: +4, W: +3, SR7; Init: +1, Perception: +5, Sense Motive: +0, 2/11 BP used, 2/4 Lvl 1 Spells Use

Moving from the gambling table, cursing and shouting Filthy Spies! Cragger moves to attack Fenna with a sword, also blocking Malthir's entrance into the common room. Fenna is able to avoid the attack with ease.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

Joining his allies Cragger and Markard, the dainty bandit Topper Red joins the attack on the beleagured Gnome, managing to gash the Gnome's leg.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (19) + 2 = 21
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (1) + 1 = 2

Crit threat!

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 2 = 5 Unconfirmed
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (4) + 1 = 5

I see you! a malevolent voice rings out from the north-east watchtower as Ayles leans out to take a shot at Malthir. The arrow pings harmlessly from Malthir's armour.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (12) + 2 = 14
1d8 ⇒ 2

Male Dwarf Monk (Sacred Mountain) 2

Crashing footsteps can be heard above, along with a thunderous crash as the huge human lands between Malthir and Fenna, brandishing a glowing club in both hands. Grinning like an idiot, Auchs appears to focus his attention on Malthir...

1d6 ⇒ 2 Fall Damage

Malthir is up- map update coming.

Free action (if I may)

Seeing Auchs coming crashing down, Kalev calls out, hoping to reach the dim-wit. Auchs, I heard Dovan wanted to destroy your nice toys!

Yelena would have discussed strategy with the group prior to this battle, right? When she puts someone to sleep with her slumber hex, someone big and burly needs to coup de grace him! :)

Male Dwarf Monk (Sacred Mountain) 2

Auchs' chainmail armour just about protects him from Malthir's blow, although the sword comes very close to penetrating it. Upon hearing Kalev, Auchs' bellows-

DOVAN MY FRIEND! DOVAN GIVES TOYS, NOT BREAKS!

Akiros has taken his action.

Dirty Jeb moves at the same time as Fat Norry; both bandits seeking to flank and cut down Casimir. Dirty Jeb's strike doesn't penetrate Casimir's armour.

Looks like we need to get through Dovan first... he has the room pretty well bottled up and I have a door in front of me...

Discarding his chicken leg with a sigh, Fat Norry presses the attack but Casimir dodges his efforts as well.

1d20 + 2 ⇒ (8) + 2 = 10
1d6 + 1 ⇒ (5) + 1 = 6

My bandits can't roll for toffee :P. Kalev did want to 5 foot step and coup de grace, but he can't five feet as Dovan's blocking his path.

DM Only:

1d20 + 11 ⇒ (11) + 11 = 22
1d8 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
1d20 + 8 ⇒ (1) + 8 = 9
1d6 ⇒ 3

Falgrim Sneeg pulls his bow back expertly, but just before he takes a shot at Malthir, a longsword is rammed through his torso and he is shoved from the watchtower by an unseen assailant, landing in a crumpled heap atop some barrels in the common room.

Working on it, but there is a snake of a combat-reflex stab-happy bandit creep in the way.

Casimir dodges and weaves, moving past the bandits and the huge Kalev to stand in front of the Owlbear pen. While moving, he slides his dueling blade from the scabbard and within seconds, if hums with arcane energy waiting to be discharged.

Acrobatics - tumble 1d20 + 12 ⇒ (20) + 12 = 32

Once next to Dovan, he grasps the blade in both hands and brings it down on the deadly bandit with full force.

Is Yelena threatening? Don't know if she has a weapon out, but if she does, add +2 to the to-hit.

Two-handed pwr att + Arcane Strike:
Attack roll 1d20 + 7 + 1 ⇒ (11) + 7 + 1 = 19
Damage roll 1d8 + 5 + 1 ⇒ (6) + 5 + 1 = 12

Casimir's blade looks sure to glance off Dovan's chain shirt as the bandit skillfully dodges to place the blade against it- but Fenna's magic is just enough to enhance the blow to strike into Dovan's chest. Wounded, Dovan snarls at Casimir and turns his attention to him.
