None of the bandits should know us on sight, so as long as Malthir is hidden/disguised, the front gate and old password might be our best bet. Once we are inside, I can keep a good few of them at bay with enlarge and spear.

Your Humble Narrator

The deliveries aren't regular- its a simple case of any brigands working this area and north towards Rostland bringing him tribute from time to time. With the bandit camp in the forest no more, the deliveries have likely already slowed.

Assuming all the leutenants and the bandits are evil anyway, shield of faith won't do anymore than protection from evil will at this level.

In fact the protection from evil is probably better against them since you also get +2 resistance bonus to saves against evil spells and spell like abilities/effects as well...I have a couple of potions of shield of faith +2 as well.

If we come from the Northwest, the bandit guardians could tell them that we are all that's left of Kressle's gang and we looted and robbed as best as we could and then came south with the tribute including some good ale's and liquor. Depend on the fact we have the amulet's, we know a lot about Kressel's bandit band, and the fact that they are probably in need of drink and loot, showing them some of the treasure we just gained including a fat bad of gold and silver, their greed should get the better of them...I don't see too many other options. Having a charm handy might be useful though if things don't progress as we want them...I could also hide in a barrel maybe...

Good idea! Also, can't remember if anyone has the spell, but Protection from Evil also completely protects us against sleep.

Kressle does not believe anyone in the fort is capable of spellcasting.

I still believe that the best course of action is to try and contact Akiros and see if he is willing to switch before we move in, either by infiltration or by bluff. Too much can go wrong if we just show up at the door and try to talk fast.

That is the better plan Casimir, the issue is actually getting in touch with him. There doesn't appear to be a real battlement that he could walk on or we could see him on. There is just the three towers from what I see. That is one of the reasons why I suggested the message and "reporting" to him at the gate. While the other bandits argue over the looot and liquor, we talk to him about switching to our side and helping us bring them down that night...but if you can think of something better, I would rather go for that...Malthir is at a dead end for ideas at this point.

Your Humble Narrator

There are walkways on the upper level as well as the three towers, as specified on the map and notes. Edit: But I think I know what your getting at. Yes, any visitors would be greeted from the closest watchtower to the gate.

hp 66/66, AC 26/17/20, CMD 23/24, F: +8, R: +11, W: +7, init: +5, per: +10 Human Bard 6/Fighter 2

My plan would depend on Yelena being willing to risk sneaking up to within a 100 feet of the fort. There will be no cover, but if she does it by night, she should be able to get close eneough without being spotted. With that distance, the guards in the towers should have a lot of negative modifiers to spot her, especially since they are human and can't see in the dark. Once within range, she can drop darkness on herself to provide extra concealment. She then casts Message, and tells Akiros that if he wants a second chance at redemption, to go hunting alone tomorrow. We then meet him in the forest and talk with him. Kalev can hunt down something for him to bring back.

Your Humble Narrator

Message needs line of sight.

Well, in that case, I'm on board with the other plan. We buy a case of the Stag Lord's favorite hooch, plus a couple of barrels of ale. Load up on a wagon. Yelena, Kalev and I act as bandits, while Fenna and Malthir hide in/under the wagon. We drive up, give the last known password, and announce that we have robbed a wine merchant and have come to give the Stag Lord his due. While the bandits unload the ale barrels, I try to get Akrios one-on-one and ask him if he will turn. I suggest Kalev and I try and get next to the Stag Lord while Yelena hangs back with the wagon. Once we are set, we propose a toast, but instead of drinking alcohol, we down potions of enlarge/protection from evil. The toast will be the signal for Mal and Fenna to get out and engage. Yelena and Fenna fire off color spray and burning hands as crowd control, while Kalev and I flank the Stag Lord. Hopefully, Akiros will engage Dovan, and Mal can handle Auchs. The important thing must be to get the leutenants and Stag Lord down as quickly as possible, and then mop up the remaining bandits afterwards.

If the rumors of the Stag Lord are true, he will want to immediately drink any booze we bring. Rather than trying to jump everyone during a toast, we could wait to see if he drinks himself unconscious, then sneak into his bedroom and attempt a coup de grace. Thoughts?

Absolutely. If he gets drunk, that would be super. It would also give us more time to talk to Akiros. Just as long as we have a code word for the hidden Guardians to jump into action.

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

Sweeten the pot with the treaure we just found and some additional gold in a fat bag and they will hopefully forget about the new password. I would suggest the attack passcode as well. I am not sure how far in advance we should bother planning, I am guessing that things might change/happen pretty quickly once we get in the fort. The main thing will be to try and not get separated, if they divide us and a fight breaks out we will be in trouble. I would rather not talk to the Stag Lord if possible until he is drunk and we can take out some of his men first. If we can get all of the bandit's drunk first that would be the best plan. We didn't sell the Stag Lord's Liquor, we asked Oleg to keep it so we can use it, he will probably want it as well as a couple of barrels of Ale for the rest of the bandits plus the gold should get them going on a good celebration. I wouldn't go into any detail about how we got it all other than raiding, less chance for holes in our story. So each person, other than me is going to have a potion of prot from evil? Between Bokken and Yelena should only take 2 days.

Your Humble Narrator

So, bandits with a wagon full of booze it is then? Any other last minute things to consider?

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

Don't forget the bag of gold & silver we will show them at the gate as well :). Just the codephrase to attack, how about something like "we encountered some fey in the woods that we had to destroy!" Something a little obscure, but nothing that might be out of line with a conversation with a bandit or a bandit leader.
Other item, I would go ahead and get the potions of PFE made at 3rd level and pay the extra charge so they will last 3 minutes, not 1. Might last more than 1 combat then. The cost would be 75 per potion from Yelena or 112.5 from Bokken assuming he is 3rd lvl as well.

Your Humble Narrator

Can you confirm you've made all the potions you wish to, you've had plenty of time to make the handful you've mentioned but I want it confirmed who has been given what so its not brought up later in confusion. Once this is clarified i'll go ahead and set the scene for the wagon rolling up the path as that seems to be the consensus.

Duke of Kardas, First Sword of Iomedae HP:51/76 AC:27 F:+14, R:+8, W:+12 CMD:23/24 P:-1 Init:+0 AOO:+16

The entire party has a 3rd lvl potion of protection from evil. Anyone else want another potion of something different? Fenna has 2 potions of Bless as well from the purchase about 2 weeks ago. Do we want to transfer one to Yelena?

Your Humble Narrator

I will assume you transfer one to Yelena so I can move things along.

A week passes as the Guardians prepare for their infiltration of the Stag Lord's fort. Hoping to be able to take drinks at some point and possibly catch the Stag Lord in a drunken stupor, the group delay their arrival until the evening. Fenna's guiding star is high in the sky above, and hidden though she is in the wagon Oleg has lent the group she takes comfort in its presence. It is about 8PM in the evening as Malthir and Fenna are loaded into the wagon, stowing away in cramped crates.

Stealth checks at a +5 bonus Fenna and Malthir please. They may become important later.

The wagon is full of trade goods and alcohol, donated by Oleg and the locals at the request of Vaysh- people are very happy to help the renowned Guardians of the Greenbelt. Dressed in the garb of defeated bandits and hauling the wagon with two horses (I assume Shadow and Malthir's horse), Yelena, Kalev and Casimir steel themselves as they slowly approach the Stag Lord's fort.

I'll need disguise checks now from the three of you- at a +8 bonus. Any bluff checks you make to get into the fort will also be at a +8 bonus.

The fort is well lit, torches strategically placed to give maximum light coverage at mininum cost by the bandits. As you get within 100 feet of the fort, you can see a sentry in the closest watchtower to you. As you get within fifty feet of the watchtower, it seems he has been joined by another bandit. Both train longbows on Kalev, but make no move to fire, motioning for you to proceed closer. When you are a mere twenty feet from the gate...

Halt! cries one of the figures in the watchtower. You know how it works lads... Whats the password? Be quick about it, he's in a foul mood tonight I can tell ya!

Hey, Father, can you smell booze? the man asks the bandit to his left, a much older man.

Male Human (Mendev) Cavalier (Standard Bearer) 1

I believe that they are indeed bearing an abundance of alcohol yes Ayles... A valuable necessity for our community here... the older man answers his fellow watchman.

Ayles spots Yelena and snickers. Sorry about that, can tell your no lad now I look closer fork-tongue! Yer not half bad-looking anyways hurgh... he says as he makes a crude gesture, earning him a stern look from the bandit stood by him.

Ayles cuffs the older man across the head. Always about the bloody community with you ain't it? Once a priest, always a priest eh...

1d20 + 7 ⇒ (15) + 7 = 22

"Careful, lad. Last bub that got too friendly-wise with me left with less than he came." Yelena smiles and licks one of her canine teeth. "We've got this hooch for the Stag Lord. Some fat Brevish merchant wasn't careful enough with where he built his campfire. Right by the road, the moron! He squealed for a good while. The Stag Lord hasn't run out since last time, has he? I don't want him in a bad mood."

Hey, Father, can you smell booze? the man asks the bandit to his left, a much older man.

For the record, Casimir is not wearing his buckler.

Disguise 1d20 + 2 + 8 ⇒ (20) + 2 + 8 = 30

Dressed out in his best bandit outfit, Casimir sits in the front of the wagon besides Kalev. Taking a cue from Yelenas banter with the bandit sentry, he calls out.

Aye lads, my fiendish ladyfriend here's got the truth of it. We been working the road to Restov a good while now, and that cat was the best haul we caught in months. Enough ale and hooch in his wagon to throw a party that'll last a week. Don't know what word's you're using these days - been gone a while, ya'know. But the last ones we got were. "By the bloody bones of Saint Gilmorg, who wants to know." Now, are you going to let us sit out here on this load, or do you want a taste?

Casimir holds up a bottle and shakes it, letting the liquid inside play in the torchlight.

Bluff 1d20 + 2 + 8 ⇒ (19) + 2 + 8 = 29

"Well then don't keep this wagon waiting. The only thing the Stag Lord hates more than not having booze is being kept from his booze! Do you need help unloading it into the store rooms?"

Disguise modifier for Kalev-
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (10) + 7 = 17

Ayles looks a little uncomfortable as a decision has suddenly been forced upon him.

I dunno Father... Maybe we should get Dovan?

There is a tense pause for a few moments as Ayles thinks.

The passwords old but your goods are too good to pass up- and I think if we shot you and took them for ourselves the lord could be angry to lose such good earners. In you come then, you horrible trio!

Everyone- big shipment coming in the front gate! Ayles yells. A cheer can be heard from around the fort in response, which is quickly drowned out by a horrible, bestial roar- surely the Owlbear Kressle mentioned to you all.

The gates to the fort creak open and the Guardians wheel the wagon in. Stood in the yard are six or seven bandits, including a massive human, a duelist in an ornate chain shirt, a distinguished looking warrior thta must be Akiros- and the Stag Lord himself. Back further into the fort, the common room is clearly visible, with another four bandits apparently dicing.

Still need stealth rolls from Fenna and Malthir. Also, no more OOC discussion between you of what you want to do. You don't have the luxury of unmonitored communication.

I'm making another post, please hold.

The Stag Lord is a powerful looking man, heavy set and tall with a fine bow over his shoulder and a fine sword strapped to his waist. His unique leather armour appears to only cover his chest, but glows softly with magic. His face is not visible, covered as it is with his trademark stag helm. He moves over to Casimir, and places a firm hand on his shoulder.

A fine shipment indeed... A mighty haul you took, if this is merely tribute and not the whole horde... Perhaps you can tell us exactly who you are and how you took such a prize with just the three of you before we invite you to dine and drink in our castle?...

hp 66/66, AC 26/17/20, CMD 23/24, F: +8, R: +11, W: +7, init: +5, per: +10 Human Bard 6/Fighter 2

Casimir bows his head to the powerful man in front of him.

My Lord! An honor to finally be in your presence. Kell's the name. The crew and I were recruited about two months back by your woman Kressle. She set us to work the North road to Restov while she squeezed that fat bugger Oleg. We had a run of bad luck, with slim pickings, until finally this juicy merchant comes rolling along. So we head's on down to the Thorn River Ford, as we been told to. Only, once we get's there, ain't no-one around. Place looked long abandoned, but there was signs of fighting and some fresh graves about. So we figure, us sittin' on a wagon-load of good, no sense in fooling about. So we get ourselves straight down her, to give M'lord his dues, as we been told is right and proper. Don't have no clue what happened to Kressle and her lads, but in any case, we present you this tribute from the three of us. I hope it pleases M'lord.

Bluff 1d20 + 2 + 8 ⇒ (5) + 2 + 8 = 15

1d20 - 1 ⇒ (11) - 1 = 10 Sense Motive.

Very well- you were right to come straight here. Kressle is a problem for another day; but rest assured, that traitorous b!@#* will get whats coming to her. The three of you have all done well. Akiros, have the finest alcohol brought to my chamber and distribute a few barrels of ale to the men. Oh, and pay these fine earners a bonus for their troubles.

His piece said, The Stag Lord moves off through the common room, pausing to sneer at the caged Owlbear before moving through Akiros' bedroom into his own, out of sight. You can see Dovan watching you closely as most of the bandits cheer for the Stag Lord. Three of them return to watchtower duty, while the rest wait eagerly for the celebrations to come.

Our lord is pleased. Akiros says softly as he hands Casimir, Yelena and Kalev a purse of gold each.

30 gold pieces each. Were I you, i'd take a bigger cut for yourselves before bringing tribute next time. Your welcome in our fort for the evening, but please be gone by midnight.

Topper! Fat Norry! Haul your sorry behinds away from your card game and unload the alcohol will you? Akiros commands, as two grumbling bandits make to move over to the wagon and unload it.

In case is isn't obvious, this presents a great risk for Malthir and Fenna being spotted. From what Kressle told you, The Stag Lord normally takes an hour or two to drink himself into a stupor.

hp 66/66, AC 26/17/20, CMD 23/24, F: +8, R: +11, W: +7, init: +5, per: +10 Human Bard 6/Fighter 2

Casimir moves to the wagon and hoists down a crate of liquor bottles.

This crate is the best of the bunch. Fine and pure, right what M'lord desires. As for the rest, just grab the ale barrels here in front. The crates in the back are filled with furs and other junk we took off a few hunters unlucky enough to wander our way. Nothing in there worth breaking a sweat over tonight, with so much ale about.

Bluff 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (5) + 2 = 7

Cas turns to Kalev. Gurthag, give the lads a hand with the barrels. I'll carry the crate of the good stuff for Master Akiros here.

Casimir turns to Akiros. Lead the way, sir.

1d20 - 1 ⇒ (12) - 1 = 11

Akiros nods his consent as he leads you to the other side of the fort, still only thirty feet or so from the yard. As he reaches his own room, he stops by the doorway.

No further for you lad. He can be a difficult man, i'll take the goods from here.

Casimir- Other bandits are only ten or so feet away, but are mostly distracted by their dicing.

Your Humble Narrator

Meanwhile...

Back at the wagon, Malthir and Fenna remain hidden as none of the bandits move the trade goods yet. Kalev is (I presume) helping to unload the alcohol. Couple of posts up shortly.

My, your a strong one! the dainty looking bandit helping Kalev to unload the wagon exclaims cheerfully. Shame you can't stay in the fort with us really, the Stag Lord could use someone as strong as you. Course, we got Auchs but hes no smarter than these horses, and Akiros is almost as strong but hes a bore... Names Topper Red by the way, whats yer story Tusky?

Nevermind your story... says the large bandit also helping, lowering a barrel with a grunt. No ones got to tell no one nothing here, we're a place of true freedom. You fancy dicing with us? Me names Norry... they call me Fat Norry here cus I likes lots of food...

Yelena finds herself with a couple of bandits vying for her attention. One of them successfully beats away the other, and bows deeply, attempting to catch her hand to kiss it. The man is dressed in expensive clothing, and is clearly from a noble background.

Celthric "Handsome" Kilburn at your service my lady- I aim to please... Perhaps you would enjoy a walk atop the battlements? Or if you would care to join the gambling, perhaps I may request that you sit with me, so that your good fortune may rub off on me? I seem to be having terrible luck...

As Casimir distracts Akiros and the men unloading, Malthir almost knocks his crate over shifting to make sure his sword is ready as well as his shield for the signal. The creak and the groan are evident to Kalev and the bandit Topper, but luckily the wagon shifts back as the horses are still not unhooked making a similar noise. Akiros looks over at the wagon as well but so far no one seems to comment on the creaky crates or wagon.
Malthir begins to sweat nervously as he waits for the shouts and sounds of battle and maybe the command word, but so far he hears nothing...

Sorry, seems there's always a lot of activity when I'm out and about.

Kalev starts unloading the barrels at Casimir's command. He flexes his muscles a little at Topper's comment. What'll the Stag Lord be using an "ox" for? he grins, but continues, Nah, I heard tell of a giant of a man, with the mind of a goblin, living down here. If the Stag Lord wants to keep me and my friends around, I'm sure that can be arranged.

At the mentioning of gambling, he nods, Sure, I'll roll some bones with you. As for my story, you'll have to ask when my mouth is not busy drinking, got it? He slaps the bandit on the back, nearly knocking him over.

Akiros nods slowly.

I thought something strange was going on here. I will say nothing right now- but you better have a damn good reason for being here under false pretences.

Akiros moves off into his room after delivering the alcohol to his master, takes a seat on a stoll and begins to drink a bottle of fine brandy for himself.

More to come.

Your Humble Narrator

Sitrep-

Malthir and Fenna remain hidden despite some onimous creaking in Malthir's crate. Yelena has a handsome bandit vying for her attention near the main gate, while Kalev has gone to gamble with four of the bandits. Casimir has been dismissed by Akiros and stands at the south end of the common room.

The Stag Lord is no doubt drinking himself into a sickened state. Most of the bandits are in high spirits and are celebrating with their new stock of alcohol. Five bandits went back upstairs, including the giant Auchs. Three of them are now in watchtowers above you. It seemed the fifth bandit went with Auchs to the central tower the giant calls home. Dovan, who is stood by the Owlbear's cage sharpening his knives; appears to be scrutinizing Casimir quite obviously. Akiros sits in his room, still within eyesight of the common room. The other bandits are in the common room with Kalev- four are making room for the half-orc to gamble with them, while Fat Norry is tearing into a huge piece of chicken. The older bandit called "Father" by Ayles is sat asleep by the fire (denoted by a blue circle), while sat nearby to him a grizzled looking veteran sketches something on a piece of parchment. The Owlbear imprisoned nearby howls in fury but is mostly ignored. The cage is held shut by a rope mechanism.

Heres a map which may make things clearer. The leutenants are denoted by red halo's. Please ignore the duplicate bandit two squares north of Dovan, that was a mistake on my part.

Dammit Jeb, last round you claimed that rolling double 6 twice was a bad thing, now you say it doubles the winnigs? Quit changing the rules berk!

Cragger Kench, and this cheating scumbag is Dirty Jeb. E' likes to think he earned that nickname for dirty fighting, but we calls him that because he avoids baths... the man murmurs to Kalev.

I can tell, Kalev says making a mocking show of holding his nose, then roaring in laughter. What's the game? And are you ready to get beaten to your breeches? Kalev adds, smiling innocently to the bandits (or as innocently as a half-orc can smile).

Topper snorts in amusement.

Jeb calls it 'Dicelords of the Greenbelt'- we all roll two dice and bid on the numbers we think will come up in the round. But the rules seem to be very complex and change frequently... Topper finishes, glaring at Jeb who grins back.

Theres a simple mechanic for this game, i'll roll on your behalf and tell you how much you win or lose during the game if you wish.
