Going to try this truly old school, rolling in order. Granted, I reserve the right to switch them around if need be...but I want to see what I can do with what I roll.
Strength 4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 4, 4) = 12
Dexterity 4d6 ⇒ (6, 2, 2, 5) = 15
Constitution 4d6 ⇒ (4, 1, 2, 3) = 10
Intelligence 4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 4, 3) = 16
Wisdom 4d6 ⇒ (3, 2, 6, 3) = 14
Charisma 4d6 ⇒ (2, 2, 6, 6) = 16
I'm another new to 5th ed player, and not normally fold of rolling stats (I'm willing to bet a twinky these are going to be terrible), but I can't turn down an opportunity to play Night Below.
On that note, I've ran it before, playing through a good portion of the first book, and I've read the other two years ago. Full disclosure and all that.
EDIT, reroll the one 1 1d6 ⇒ 1
So finale is...
Str 10
Dex 13
Con 9
Int 13
Wis 12
Cha 14
Going to read up on bards and sorcerers.
Calmlight |
What can I say? I've got a weak spot for 5e and an even bigger one for rolling gobs of dice.
4d6 ⇒ (6, 1, 1, 2) = 10 Reroll 1s 2d6 ⇒ (4, 1) = 5 Reroll 1s 1d6 ⇒ 2
4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 4, 6) = 22
4d6 ⇒ (1, 5, 3, 2) = 11 Reroll 1s 1d6 ⇒ 2
4d6 ⇒ (4, 5, 5, 6) = 20
4d6 ⇒ (6, 4, 3, 1) = 14 Reroll 1s 1d6 ⇒ 2
4d6 ⇒ (1, 6, 3, 1) = 11 Reroll 1s 2d6 ⇒ (3, 1) = 4 Reroll 1s 1d6 ⇒ 3
At least the rerolling of ones cancelled out my usual abysmal luck. Brainstorming time.

Namara al-Nasr |
Here is tribeof1's submission: Namara al-Nasr.
I tweaked my idea a bit after reading the Far Wanderer background in the Sword Coast Adventurer's Guide. I could end up going Oath of Devotion or Oath of Vengeance at 3rd level, depending on how jaded my transplant from the Land of Fate becomes here among the heathens.

Great character concept. Everything looks in order.
DM Asmodeus |
I'll try to post my character sometime tomorrow. Some unfortunate news kind of took the wind out of my sails for a day or two. If punctuality factors into your decision, be aware that once I'm in a game, I'm in it. These past few days have just been crazy. Sorry for the wait.
No worries. Life happens. You have until Saturday so you have plenty of time.
Calmlight |
Going with a Life Cleric. I'd like to reflavor the Alert feat into something a little supernatural to reflect the idea I had of my character having some minor oracular talent but other than that, everything else should be good to go. Hopefully I can grab some divination type spells later and maybe take that feat that boosts perception and just write it all off as having a good feeling about things.
I'm in GMT-6 but I'm not sure how much that matters since I work nights. =P

Looks good, good concept, good backstory. I like her. Can you please make a post using that alias so she is easy to spot for me.
Thanks in advance.

sweet. just got back into 5e irl. I had my 1st session joining a new group. now I got the bug and a 1/month session won't cut it.
<---- crosses his fingers as he rolls
stat1: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 6, 3, 4) = 16
stat2: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 5, 5, 5) = 20
stat3: 4d6 ⇒ (1, 2, 1, 4) = 8
stat4: 4d6 ⇒ (3, 4, 6, 5) = 18
stat5: 4d6 ⇒ (6, 6, 6, 2) = 20
stat6: 4d6 ⇒ (5, 4, 6, 3) = 18
reroll for 3rd: reroll: 2d6 ⇒ (3, 3) = 6
okay.. pretty amazing except for 1 (opening up room for a fatal flaw?)
looks like I got:
13, 15, 9, 15, 18, 15
no submissions for a wizard yet (to fit into DM's "ideal" group), but I really want to give a warlock a try. Warlock can cover "blasty" and a magic user but if the party needs... a few tweaks can convert him from warlock to wizard.
alias with character stats to follow.

You can put Fraust down for a College of Lore Bard.
Still hammering out some of the details, as the SRD is still in its infancy, and the basic rules I found on WotC's site don't include bard. I should have access to a PHB tonight to finish up though.
Gotta say, I'm liking 5th Ed a lot more than I thought I would (had some serious misunderstandings on certain mechanics), though I still think I prefer 13th Age. Either way, super excited to have another chance at playing Night Below!
DM Asmodeus |
It looks like we are at the mid-week point of recruiting. Only a few days left to get those character applications in.
Being at the midpoint of the week and needing a total of 8 players I have decided to go ahead and announce the first 4 that have been selected for the game.

Clamlight with Haven Amberline the Human Cleric
If the four players listed above would report to the game discussion thread for further instructions. Thank you.

Wolfgang von Goethe |
Hi there!
Character submission for Atlas2112
For starters I've -always- wanted to play a Warlock, but the time never seemed right. But it looks like 5e finally got it down!
The crunch looks good, and here is the backstory. Please read in order. I tried to customize it for the "/Horror" genre that we seem to be aiming for. Enjoy!
Wolfgang looked down at the still corpse that had once been his youngest daughter. He -knew- she shouldn't have gotten involved with that boy, but he thought to let out the tether, see if she could realize the mistake on her own.
Apparently he was wrong.
He nodded his thanks at the constable and made his way to the Building of State. His position as Banister gave him access to the Restricted books. He knew that there his answers lay.
Wolfgang strode down the street, his quarry in his sights. The man he followed was heavily inebriated, Wolfgang had seen to that. He'd met the man at a wineshop he was known to favor. Feigning ignorance, and the friendship of a stranger, he'd bought the man wine, spirits, absinth, anything he wanted. After a long night and the lightening of a purse's coin, the man left and Wolfgang shook his hand, saying good night.
But the night would be far from good.
The man passed the alley, and Wolfgang bowled into him, pushed him into the gang of toughs he'd hired for brief work. The man's mouth was stuffed and his limbs trussed. He was carried stealthily to the cheap hotel, all the rooms rented but empty, again Wolfgang's work, the Innkeeper well-bribed to make the building scarce this night.
The man was shackled to a strong bed-post.
"And now, Mr. Schiller, we will discuss your relationship with my late daughter, and how it was you were last seen with her."
He bade the man's gag removed, and a scarred tough did so.
"'Twasn't me, your Grace! 'Twas Curwen! Joseph Curwen! He ordered me bring the girl to her! I swears it! I did'na mean 'er no harm! I--"
"Silence! You will tell me how to find this...Curwen."
"No! NO no NO! You don't, you don't know what he'll do to me! I can't--"
"Beseems your priorities bear some...re-analysis. -WE- are here. You should worry upper-most about US. Perhaps we need to apply greater persuasion?"
"No! Okay, I tells ya, I tells ya. He's in the Old Grist-mill. The one astride East River!"
Wolfgang stroked his chin. "Mmmm. Yes, I know it. Long has it been abandoned. Very good. You've done well. Kill him."
"No! No, wait, I...I know his secret! He don't know I knows it, but...but I heard him once say the source of his power was in this book. It's...it's restricted, but...but ya can get's to it, ya? He...he said it were the "Cult De Gools" or somesuch."
He nodded. "Yes. I've not yet read it, for even the old librarian shudder when I glanced upon the back-spine. The proper name is 'Cultes Des Ghoules' and it lays with a thick coat of dust upon it. That would...that would make a kind of sense. Yes, I--"
Wolfgang's voice was cut off as Mr. Shiller started screaming with a voice unlike this world. "NO! NO! Joseph, I didn't, I swears I--," the room was filled with an unearthly baying of ephemeral wolves and lit with a horrible blue light. Shiller's voice was cut off as his body levitated a few inches above the bed he was chained, and his head, of its own volition, bent back upon his spine, and loud CRACK was heard. The man stopped his screaming and the body bounced down upon the bed and the room once again was quiet and still. Chiller's neck laying at an angle no living man could manage.
The young toughs climbed over themselves in a mad dash to leave the room. Their concerns were of the flesh, either stabbing it or pouring things into it, and this was beyond their liking.
Wolfgang would study this book, and find Mr. Curwen's weakness. The book was not large. In two weeks this would be done.
"Father, it's been a year. Time to come home now."
'Has it...has it been a year? I year I've been here? With only this one book? One book has captured my attention this long. Oh, but I've learned so MUCH! Secrets undreamed are now mine to command! The veil, this...this veil OF A veil that hath lain over mine eyes for...for ever. For so long, it has been lifted. Oh, if my son if you could but see the world as I do now! If you could but....
...but no. He would not. None that did not know my grief as deeply would bear even a single page. None but ME could glean even a hundredth-weight of what I now...no, I ..I need more time. Just a...just a little. A little more time.'
"Just a little more time, my son. Wiemar, go and tell your mother I just...I just need a little more time."
The young man nodded, and took his leave.
Where did it all go wrong?
This morning he left the library. At last secure that, though he did grasp the least bit of insight gleaned from the book, he at last knew enough to challenge Joseph Curwen. The man that...what? He did...something. Something important. He...took his daughter? No, that, that makes no sense. Someone...something. Stop. It was all...confusing. Must focus. Now is NOT the time to doubt.
He entered the old grist-mill. Joseph was there. In the large main room, bare of ornamentation, save for a desk and a chair, dwarfed in size by the main chamber of the mill naked of machinery. Curwen sat behind the desk, reading a book cased on the blackest of bindings.
"Good evening, Herr Wolfgang Von Goethe. You are...early."
"How did you..."
"I see you. I have watched you. For a thousand years I have watched you. A thousand others have watched you, and they are those that command me. You think yourself learned for piercing the first page of Cultes, but that is but a novice's guide. A child's plaything to True Power.
Would you like that? The power to understand. The power to kill. The power to...bring her back?"
"I already have the power to kill. Sturmgeweher!"
A translucent bolt of green energy loosed from his hands. Joseph caught it as though it were a baseball.
"Yes, the Eldrich Bolt," Curwen smiled, unharmed. Pleased. "It is the first of the Secrets. Not even worthy of an entry to a Circle. You have much to learn. And I have much to teach. Now. Shall we begin?"
"I...I...Y--"
"It's time to come home, Father."
Wolfgang spun to see his son enter the door of the mill. "You have been gone too long, Father. Come home with me."
"NO!" the primordial scream was ripped from his lips. So close! So close to...to...to his goal, of.... He couldn't remember. But it...it was important.
Curwen smiled. "An excellent first lesson. Kill the boy, and you will be ready."
Wolfgang raised his hand, and prepared to murder his son.
"I...I can not."
He lowered his hand. And left.
Joseph Curwen smiled.
Wolfgang walked the streets of the strange city. He didn't know what he was looking for.
But he would know when he found it.
The book rode easily by his side.

Everyone else feel free to apply with a character.
Erdann |
Erdann, Drow Wizard, and Tenro's submission, is complete. That is, barring any additional DM requests, or oversights on my part.
I made him as somewhat of an Arcane Trickster (if in spirit only, and not stats), just more arcane and less trickster.
Sadly, his only weapon is a dagger. I was hoping a wizard would get a crossbow, or a drow to get a hand crossbow, but I guess the system doesn't go out of its way to reward unusual combos. As it stands, he has little to offer (aside from Ray of Frost) in the way of offense until he gets a crossbow.
He ended up with a higher DEX than INT, due to how the dice fell in my initial post and the racial modifiers for elves. I suppose that will be interesting to play.
Ffordesoon |
After much consideration, I've decided to bow out. I was looking forward to playing this, but I simply don't have the time to devote to it. I may, however, read along - this sounds too awesome not to at least do that.
Congratulations those who have been and will be selected. I'll keep my character in reserve if someone chooses to drop out.
Thanks for your consideration!

Every drow has to start somewhere right? Shouldn't be too difficult to find a bow.

bows are for sissy surface elves! crossbows are for cool drow that don't look back at explosions. nevermind that i am not proficient with regular bows.
also, wow, cantrips do more damage than they used to! 1d8!!

Here is Cade Ravenhill's submission, Dugwyn is a dwarf bard ready to inspire you with tales of dwarven kings and stories of ale so strong your grandchildren will be born drunk . Sorry it took so long had a busy week at work. (spent 6 gp, 4 remaining)
Looks good except the game starts in Waterdeep and not Haranshire.
Thanks for the submission.
