GM Cwethan |
You'll need to move adjacent to one of the other ships to discover/download whatever logs might be left. For now it's fine to assume that you're able to safely navigate the area, but make sure to be purposeful with your ship's facing. No need to force Naboh into a whole bunch of Piloting checks :p
Naboh Berrnshaw |
Naboh pilots the ship to the nearest derelict, avoiding the ice balls expertly.
Take Ten on piloting? I trust GM will let me know if I need to make a Piloting roll.
GM Cwethan |
Happily, this second ship does seem to be intact enough to still hold some data logs. You're quickly able to begin the process of transferring them over to your ship's computer, but as you do, the comm crackles and a voice, nearly choked with distortion and static, rings out.
"**hsssssss**This is Captain Kat**zzfdafdx** Mathius of the SFS Empyrean Eye. **kwrzt** Identify yourselves. What is your purpose here? **fzzzt**"
No ship appears on your sensors.
Naboh Berrnshaw |
Can I pull up a Science console, or is my action already used by piloting?
Quig. "Crash Override" |
Quig closes the AR display where he was we working the failed scan from earlier.
"Erp, on it sirs"
Engineering: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (13) + 11 = 24
Naboh Berrnshaw |
Wow. What in the Nine Hells happened to the forums? Well, good to be back finally.
Where's that coming from...?
Naboh pulls up a Science console and punches some buttons.
Science: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (18) + 9 = 27
Gary King of the Humans II |
Gary suddenly becomes aware of himself sitting at a computer on some spaceship...I feel like I've been on a week long bender! What am I doing here?
He looks over to Naboh who seems busy at work doing something. Umm, what are we doing again? Gary says rather confused trying to recover from the apparent fugue state.
Naboh Berrnshaw |
Uhh...you were just tellin' me you should have stopped gamblin' when you had the chance. So, you gonna pay up, or what?
Bluff: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (19) + 0 = 19
Not sure if that's a good result or a bad one, honestly. :-)
Gary King of the Humans II |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (2) + 5 + (4) = 11
I did?! Gary gives Naboh a funny look...How much did I lose to you, again? 20 credits was it? Gary says totally guessing and hoping it's not very much.
Naboh Berrnshaw |
Yeah, sure. That'll do...for a down payment.
Bluff: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (17) + 0 = 17
LOL. Yeah, getting all my good rolls out of the way now when I really sort of want to roll low.
Gary King of the Humans II |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (8) + 5 + (3) = 16
Gary starts to wonder about Naboh's story, but seems believable enough. He transfers 20 credits to the ysoki, Oh-kay, there ya go Mate.
I don't even remember gambling with him? Pretty bad Gary. He admonishes himself.
Azara Thenason |
"Time itself cannot escape gravity. How can we...or a virtual world expect to?" Azara says, contemplatively as he suddenly comes back to himself after what feels like days of unexpected meditation.
Gary King of the Humans II |
Shall I hail them, Captain? Gary nervously goes ahead.
We are a SFS ship as well, what did we name her? Anyway we've come to find out what happened to you...so where the *beep* are you? Gary calls out on the comms.
GM Cwethan |
She snorts, "Okay, you sound like Starfinders at least." Her voice turns wary in an instant though, “How should I know why you can't see me? It’s your ship that looks suspicious! Our sensors indicate you’re phased out of the Material Plane. What is this technology?”
You could try to explain that away with Computers, Engineering, Mysticism, or Physical Science. Or when you don't have the techno - just babble with Bluff
Naboh Berrnshaw |
Naboh tries to determine who exactly is phase shifted, us or them. He relays any information he finds to the Captain.
Engineering: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (16) + 11 = 27
Exemplar-2 |
Exemplar-2 closes his eyes and attempts to gain some greater understanding of the situation with Captain Mathius.
Mysticism: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (17) + 7 = 24
GM Cwethan |
Well, the boards have been doing their level best to give us all a simulation of the Gap, so I hope you've been enjoying it. Sheesh.
It would take powerful magic indeed to phase shift an entire ship, especially without you noticing. You think it's more likely that this isn't the work of a spell, but rather some other reason that your ship or hers has become otherworldly...
Any questions for her?
Azara Thenason |
"So, you can see us, but we cannot see you...?" Azara questions, trying to make sure he understands the issue as much as trying to get more information (he keeps having bouts where it feels like he is out of phase for days at a time and it's influencing his memory...)
"Can you tell us where you are relative to our position? Does anything seem out of place?"
Quig. "Crash Override" |
Quig has a bright idea, and with cuts into the com feed. "Captain Katryn, this is 'Crash Override' Science Officer of Yosoki's Pride, can we link computer systems, I understand you might be wary to link to an unknown vessel, but we can use a starfinder encryption key and only link entertainment systems" he makes the motion to cut the feed and suspends the comm. "The time stamp should let us know if we are looking at both a time and space anomaly"
'but if they are out of time sync how am I going to get that encryption to work...
Computers: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (5) + 11 = 16
Gary King of the Humans II |
Whoa Captain Katryn, it's okay It's Gary King, You know Gary King right! So like a year ago or something you went with a bunch of other Starfinder ships to the Scoured Stars. Well you all disappeared in the Scoured Stars, we are the rescue squad we came to find you. Now don't freak out, but we can hear you, but not see you. That's why we are asking where you are. Gary says frantically as if he is making up for lost time. Oh where does the time go.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (7) + 8 = 15
GM Cwethan |
Despite the word of the ever reliable Gary King, Captain Mathius does not seem soothed, "I think I know what's going on. Did you come to kill me like the others did?"
Naboh Berrnshaw |
Sense Motive DC15: 1d20 + 0 ⇒ (3) + 0 = 3
Naboh is starting to wonder if we did come to kill him. But he wisely keeps his mouth shut.
Gary King of the Humans II |
Sense Motive: 1d20 + 5 + 1d6 ⇒ (8) + 5 + (6) = 19
Gary voice goes from frantic, to dead calm as he realizes the strain in the Captain's voice. Listen Captain, this may come as shock to you, but we think you are stuck in an inter-dimensional wormhole. It happened when you entered the Scoured Stars. Now we have our top scientists and engineers working around the clock to bring you back and they are very close. But we just need a little cooperation on your end, you know cooperate that's what we do. They are now telling me we can see you, but the wormhole makes thing distorted, we want to get you back safe, so you are going to have to help us by relaying your exact position to us and linking computers with us if possible. Now we can probably get you back safe without assistance, BUT if you help it will be MUCH safer. After all it's Gary King Ba-Bay. Gary has no idea what's going on, but he tries to seem like they are completely in control...when you know they are not!
Bluff: 1d20 + 9 + 1d6 ⇒ (5) + 9 + (3) = 17
dang dice roller won't play nice..lol
Azara Thenason |
"I assure you we are not here to kill you. In fact, if someone has tried to kill you, we want to aid you as fellow Starfinders. As Gary King has said, we just need your exact position to do so," Azara says, hoping to coax the captain into compliance to help them help her.
Diplomacy: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (18) + 8 = 26
GM Cwethan |
Particularly mollified by Azara's efforts, Captain Mathius relays what coordinates she can, "**ssfzz**'re holed up in the ice ring. The rest of the Starfinders, the ones who didn't lose their **gkk**ing minds tried to make it to Bastiar-2, but we had to stop **krrrrrr** make repairs."
There's still no discernible source for her transmission, but as you approach the coordinates she offered, the wreck that looms before you is clearly emblazoned as the Empyrean Eye. The bridge has been completely destroyed, and there are no life signs, or any sort of back up transmitter that could be broadcasting...
Exemplar-2 |
This is quite unusual. Could they have phased out of this reality and also been destroyed in this reality? Or are we speaking with ghosts?
GM Cwethan |
The bridge is very quiet in response to Exemplar's last question.
Still, you've been able to download the ship logs you were looking for, and even received additional information, despite any lingering questions about the true nature of the source.
Since we lost time due to the irl Gap, I'm gonna nudge you guys towards wrapping up here, but if you have pressing questions please do just ask 'em anyways.
Otherwise... the handouts await with four more options for recon missions! First to two votes gets it! NB: You are NOT automatically getting a long rest in between these.
Exemplar-2 |
Bastiar-7 or Callion-2 I guess, as tempting as dinosaurs sound at Agillae-2
Naboh Berrnshaw |
I'm confused, GM. Are you saying that we've solved this puzzle and can move on, or that we have the necessary info to solve it?
GM Cwethan |
The imposing vesk Radaszam, leader of the Acquisitives takes charge of this briefing. Standing near a large screen, he points at the display of a tidally locked planet labeled as Callion-2. “Starfinders,” he greets you, in his pleasantly low voice, “I’m sure you’ll find this mission interesting. Our sensors have detected numerous communication signals broadcast from Callion-2. Because one side of the planet is always facing the sun, only a narrow habitable zone exists, but here’s the interesting part: the entire habitable area is covered in one big, technologically advanced megacity. Finding survivors, or at least useful information in the city, seems likely. I’ll upload mission data on your ship’s computer. Good luck and come back safely!”
***
It's easy enough to find a suitable place to land on a rooftop near a variety of intriguing looking locations: a factory district, an enormous library, a military base, a residential area, and a shopping mall. They're all within about 10 minutes of one another.
Despite what Radaszam might have hoped, the city so far is quiet, though not quite silent. An oddly distorted music is barely chiming from assorted speakers nearby you.
Luckily, figuring out the series of decisions that led a society to place all of those locations within 10 minutes of each other is beyond the scope of this adventure.
Where to first?
Naboh Berrnshaw |
If there's been some sort of planetwide catastrophe, aren't we most likely to find survivors in a shopping mall?
Azara Thenason |
Azara is a bit disturbed that they were not able to save the crew of the Empyrean Eye but he realizes that they may not be saveable...or even alive.
When they get to Callion-2 he nods in response to Naboh's suggestion.
"If my viewing of zombie holo-vids has taught me anything, it's that survivors of cataclysms end up at malls."
Quig. "Crash Override" |
Quig draws his tiny pistol and scuttles forward keeping to the shadows.
Stealth: 1d20 + 10 ⇒ (13) + 10 = 23
Exemplar-2 |
Exemplar-2 readies himself to head to the surface and the mall.
GM Cwethan |
The weirdly artificial music is louder at the mall, and it's there you see some signs of life. Assorted robots move among the stores shelving and reorganizing useless, deteriorated products.
After a short while, you notice something else, a human looking creature watching you from afar!
What do you do?
Gary King of the Humans II |
Do you mean Culture instead of Society?
Perception or Culture?: 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (17) + 5 = 22
Looking around Gary comments, This place has been abandoned to the blanks and for a long time.
When he sees the human he raises his arm in greeting.
Hello there! We come in peace. I'm Gary King, of the Humans, of the Starfinder Society.
Gary King of the Humans II |
Well that was weird and their isn't any ale anywhere. This mall is lame. If people are going to be anywhere my guess is at the military base I say we head there. Gary suggests.
Naboh Berrnshaw |
Yeah, that was weird. Anybody else got a funny feelin' we're bein' watched?
Naboh sniffs warily as he continues exploring.
Perception: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (10) + 4 = 14
Exemplar-2 |
Yes, let's go to the base. It is a defensible position and would have munitions.
GM Cwethan |
The base is locked down pretty tight, only assorted drones making any movement as you walk along to the muted sounds of discordant music.
As you arrive however, the same creature appears, looking like an androgynous human dressed in typical stationwear.
"Greetings, I am A-1. I am afraid that this location is reserved for authorized personnel. Please state your business."
