Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Wow, archived. Mea Culpa.

Six khaasta flee the scene. Issac attempts to ford the grease ..

DC 16 Reflex I believe

Ekuur bids one to halt

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (14) + 3 = 17

It continues running.

Swire and Karrin run after the fleeing khaasta

I'll need DC 16 Reflex from you guys too

Justin runs around, and tries to get in range for a Glitterdust. He can target one, they are separating.

1d20 + 3 ⇒ (15) + 3 = 18

One lights up like a gold nugget, but keeps going.

Merle takes aim. Her arrow takes one in the back. It screeches, but keeps running

Bethany's arrow comes up a bit short. Drazek can't find one in range without moving They are about 150' away at the start and going at a full run

OK, I think that is it

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Is this taking into account the damage it will do a round later?

Merle (either dismissing the grease spells or moving round to avoid them) checks to see if any of the downed Khaasta are still alive

Not yet ..

The khaasta falls, smoking, in mid-stride. Its body is soon wreathed in an acid fog

Issac and Swire both glide through the large grease patch gracefully. At the edge they hop out and begin running

Now the Khaasta are in full flight. Do you want to run after or wait? Their normal move rate is 30', since they are in heavy armor they can only go 3X, so that is 90'/rd.

Are they fleeing in a general direction or just scattering?

While she searches for any survivors Merle also searches the bodies of the fallen Khaasta

"After them! If the leader with the device gets away, this whole party is for nothing!" Justin cries, pulling out the golden statue,...

Presuming thatwe/I've figured out how to activate the hippogryph statue correct? Or do I need 'down time' to figure it out?

They are headed back towards the complex of buildings about 1500 feet away, but they are rather spread out (probably afraid of another fireball)

Naw, the activation word can be Kaeluskotkas. Assuming you say it.

The small statue swells and becomes a golden-feathered griffon with a small riding saddle. Its liquid eyes look over Justin as it screeches and flaps its wings.

Male Human Rogue 6

Still chasing them.

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Ditto.

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

Ekuur begins chasing the lizards, trying to keep up as best he can.

Bribes always welcome

OK, what is the run speeds of y'all? Will you catch them before they run 1500'? There's five now that Merle melted one, and one glowing all sparkly.

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

120 feet, unless I'm figuring my encumbrance wrong. He can run for 14 rounds without a Con check.

Hmm. Assuming a 200' headstart for dicussion sake (them running and you having to navigate the grease and them being farther away than I thought when you Michael Bayed them into submission) ...hmm

  • 200+90 120
  • 290+90 120+120
  • 380+90 240+120
  • 470+90 360+120
  • 560+90 480+120

OK, by my calculations, Issac can catch up in six rounds. That would be about a third of the way to the buildings

Issac runs like a lean and feral wolf towards the lumbering plate-clad lizardmen. The gap between them shortens quickly

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"Yeah. THAT'S what I'm talkin' about!" Justin declares with a wicked grin at the appearance of the bronze hippogryph before him. He climbs into the saddle, (taking a few precious moments to make sure that his seat straps are fastened), and launches his mount into the air with an enthusiastic "YeeeHaw!"

Heehee! 'Fire from above' anyone?!? ;)

He flies his magic statue as fast as he can, wary of fireballs or arrows from below, as he tries to get ahead of the fleeing Khastaa. He scans the area for the exit portal that Isacc mentioned.

"C'mon goldenwing! Let's show these lizards what your made of!" He yells into the wind to his new friend.

His goal is to get to the exit and prevent Khastaa from escaping.

Perception Check: Exit Portal Area:
1d20 + 7 ⇒ (13) + 7 = 20

Nari will try to telekinetically pick up one of the feeling khaasta and drop him from a good height.

Will save DC 17, If he fails she can hurl him 60ft.

Goldenwing opens his beak and screeches. His large wings flap as he runs a bit, leaping into the sky. The party dwindles as he gains altitude. Justin's eyes water as the wind streams by.

Although the experience is exhilariting, Goldenwing seems fairly slow, and isn't catching up to the fleeing Khaasta

He has a 80' fly speed. Thus you will be losing 10' round.

However, at this vantage point ..

Justin:

Spoiler:
Justin can see an open portal at the far side of this demiplane, a small silvery wink at the side of the misty blackness that bounds the khaasta's lair. He can also see several khaasta still manning the parapets of the tall tower.

1d20 + 4 ⇒ (6) + 4 = 10

6d6 ⇒ (2, 6, 2, 3, 5, 6) = 24

An armored khaasta suddenly sails through the air, landing with a *crunch*. He doesn't stir again.

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Isaac pulls out his guisarme and attempts to trip one within ten feet of him.
Trip: 1d20 + 7 ⇒ (9) + 7 = 16
They get an attack of opportunity, but the guisarme is a reach weapon. I can also drop it if I fail and they try to trip me back.

Is that your CMB roll? The Khaasta's CMD is 18. It can't aoO, since it is running full bore away

Male Half-elf (Planar) Ranger 5/Rogue 2/Plane Walker 1

Yeah, CMB. So it fails.

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Wait, (I guess I need to add the movement rules to my 'must read soon' list! ;P A flying creature can't 'run' at 2x speed like a ground based creature???

Oh well,... all is not lost!

"We'll never catch them like this!" Justin shouts, whether to be heard over the wind, or in frustration is hard to tell.

"Come on Goldenwing! FLAP those tail-feathers!" Justin cries, and cats a spell,...

Justin and the magical mount are briefly bathed in a mystical fiery glow, and the hippogryph suddenly lunges forward in an increase of speed as his wings beat faster. Justin's reactions as he grabs the saddle are also faster than usual as he whoops in surprise.

Cast 'Haste' after all! NOW maybe I can get there ahead of the Khastaa! ;)

Y'know, I hadn't considered that. Sounds reasonable, but IDK. Any rules folks know the answer offhand? Now that Goldenwing is available I'd better find out what she is capable of. I'll do some reasearch in my copious spare time ...

Goldenwing screeches and flies even faster as the haste spell takes effect. Justin skims past the running khaasta and approaches the tall tower.

OK, everyone else persuing, please give me your run speed so's I can try and figure out who's where. Everyone else, post your actions. The khaasta will reach their lair in 16 rounds.

Ah, sorry 'bout that Merle ..

Merle sidles up to the corpses littering the scorched grass. The burned khaasta seem to be dressed in platemail and weilding scimitars. A quick scan of their beltpouches reveals ...

Spoiler:
  • 1,000 GP in various coinage.
  • A few pieces of half-burned paper with odd lines drawn on and an odd language
  • A green-colored potion

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

My understanding is that the wondrous figurines actually turn into the creature, and are not animated constructs. (I have a book of Faerun short stories which includes how a wizard originally made the figurine that is Drizzt's faithful panther companion. He actually linked a statue and a live panther, trapping the panther in the ethereal plane except when called by the statue. Of course it's a book, and not 'rules', but the flavor and story was cool!)

"Hm, that tower might be a problem,... But not for long! Head for the tower Goldenwing!" Justin shouts, gathering magical power until his hands are covered in flames,...

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

Karrin is wearing medium armour so her base move is 20, however Karrin will make liberal use of her quickened expeditious retreat to keep catch up fast.

Karrin boots it up to 160 when she uses her magic, and she can use the spell 6 more times today. Though she will reserve one spell for a true strike.

OK dokey

  • 200+90 160
  • 290+90 160+160
  • 380+90 320+160

So at the end of round three Karrin will catch up to the khaasta

Karrin's magically-enlarged form stomps rapidly down the dimly-lit greensward towards the fleeing khaasta. Giant booming steps bring her within range quickly, her giant axe wreathing her wake in an icy fog

Post those actions!

Fair enough. So at top speed Goldenwing can move 320'. Yikes.

Justin Case wrote:

Here we go ...

Goldenwing screeches and spirals down towards the six-story tower. Justin can see a dozen khaasta running about the top deck. The tower boasts a flat top with crenelations. There are several ballista in evidence there, shielded by large hide-covered awnings. The khaasta seem busy pouring water on the hides from buckets and wheeling the ballista about. Several in fact seem to be aiming at him ...

Male Human (Athasian) Cleric 10

Ekuur has a speed of 20', with no real way to enhance. So looks like he'll bring up the rear. He'll actually help Merle check the bodies, and he'll look around to see if any are not quite dead yet. If he finds one on death's door, he'll use his rebuke death touch to keep it from dying (but only on one, and only after totally disarming it.)

You can read Merle's spoiler then. As I really didn't keep track of con score on these mooks, I'll rule that you and Merle can find a few still technically alive, if barbequed...

Merle comes across a khaasta that is still breathing heavily. After divesting it of its still-warm weaponry and opening up its breastplate, Ekuur rebukes death, stabilizing the lizard. It opens its fried eyelids, and hisses feebly.

Roll me a 1d4+3

female Tiefling 12th level Duskblade

Karrin would try to run down clusters, trying to reach two or three lizards rather then individuals. Karrin takes up four squares and has reach so she can cover a lot or area with her axe. These poor lizards could be up to 30ft apart and still be within cleave range for Karrin.

Attack: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (18) + 11 = 29
damage: 1d12 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (12) + 7 + (6) = 25
Possible cleave: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (7) + 11 = 18
damage: 1d12 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (8) + 7 + (6) = 21
Possible AoO: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (15) + 11 = 26
damage: 1d12 + 7 + 1d6 ⇒ (7) + 7 + (5) = 19

Karrin's first swing slices one of the running khaasta cleanly in twain. The bisected lizard falls to the earth, both sides flash frozen solid. The follow-through blow just misses a second lizard.

OK, three left and 13 rounds to go. I can see the writing on the wall, so for brevities' sake

The party runs down the last few khaasta and dispatches them before they can reach their complex. They stand panting a few hundred feet from the tower. They see Goldenwing dipping down towards the tall turret.

OK, so Justin is heading into the tower. I will need a new grp initiative please.

Initiatives:

Tower khaasta: 15[zapping Justin/ballista]
Mr. Swire: 9 [at tower: Pending]
Issac: 8 [at Tower: Pending]
Merle: 5 [rifling casualties: Pending]
Justin: 4 [at tower: Pending-need concentrate chk]
Drazek: 4 [Pending]
Tiandra: 4 [at tower: Pending]
Naridre: 4 [at tower: Pending]
Bethany: 4 [at tower: Pending]
Ekuur: 1 [rifling casualties: Pending]

OK, for sake of everything, I am going to say the party is 360 ft from the tower. that is two increments for the ballista to fire. Three are aimed at them, and three at Justin. Justin was 100' from the tower, so he is within normal range.

There are several deep *thunng* sounds from the tower and ballista bolts fly towards both the party and Justin

1d5 ⇒ 51d5 ⇒ 51d5 ⇒ 2

One heads for Issac, another two are aimed at the airborne Bethany

Issac: 1d20 - 8 ⇒ (3) - 8 = -5
Bethany:1d20 - 8 ⇒ (13) - 8 = 51d20 - 8 ⇒ (6) - 8 = -2
Justin:1d20 - 4 ⇒ (15) - 4 = 11
Goldenwing:1d20 - 4 ⇒ (11) - 4 = 71d20 - 4 ⇒ (2) - 4 = -2

The yard-long shafts strike all about their targets, hitting no one

LMAO

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

Woot! No spell, using my fire burst ability. (I guess I need to look it up again, is it a spell-like ability?!?) Since I used my Fireball, my highest lvl fire spell is 2nd, so it is a 2d6+3 5'diameter explosion.

The mystic griffon banks hard, avoiding the direct blast of the lightning bolt. Still, the brush with the edge causes Justin to jerk momentarily like a puppet with tangled strings.

"Aieaieaieaieaie,..." The mage's teeth chatter as St Elmo's Fire briefly dances around both him and the griffon.

"Lightning. Why'd it have to be lightning?" Justin grumbles.

The griffon banks again, and 3 shafts as long as Justin was tall all pass through the space they had just vacated. Justin gulped. Even one of those bolts were capable of turning him into a mage-kabob.

Justin frowned, his shock turning to anger. "Alright, MY turn lizards!" He cries, hurling handfuls of flame to the tower where they explode, sending detrius flying,...

Can I see the ballista from where I am? If so, how well secured is it? I mean, I know I probably can't see that. If I can see the ballista I'm gonna try to pick it up and drop it back on the tower using telekinetic thrust. Presuming I can get within 160 ft, and that it weighs less than 250 lbs. Good chance it won't work, but it's worth a shot.:)
