Chronicles of the Silver Rose Company

Game Master Patrick Curtin

This campaign is my attempt to play a canonical Planescape campaign using the updated Pathfinder ruleset. The game actually predates the release of Pathfinder, but we have managed to update as we have needed.

Bing. That's it! So much for worrying that this was too tough an encounter :/

Merle's bolts strike the final bug's left eye. The bug collapses in a heap. The branch is quiet

Congrats!

Justin tugs his heavy leather coat back into position.

"Mighty big cockroaches they have around here." He drawls dryly. He examines the goo-splattered carapaces for anything surviving that might be usable for an arcane component.

"Good work everyone!" Karrin says as she cleans her axe carefully on the bark, "we executed that assault perfectly. Nice to see all those hours we put into the training room paid off!"

Ekuur remains quiet, with a deep frown on his face, disappointed at his poor fighting in this battle. However, he regains his composure enough to ask the group, "Does anyone require healing before we continue on?"

Isaac whistles appreciatively.
"Pity the berk that wants to tangle with us!"
He pats the nearest giant beetle's shell.
"Sorry, cutter, nothin' personal. I reckon yeh'll enjoy yer next life as a...."

He pulls a folded pamphlet from his breast pocket and studies it for a moment.
"Let's see... giant insects... neutrally aligned... reincarnated as... MEPHITS?! They need to rewrite this thing. Completely undervaluing animal level sentiency and task specialization."
Isaac crumples up his official Godsman Reincarnation Wheel.
"That's enough bug-guts for my boots. Yeh want to get back on the trail, mates?"

Justin takes a closer look at the central bug, since it suffered the internal haemorrage and there's a lot more variety in observable parts. There's a lot of different pieces and fluids to choose from, everything from coarse hairs that coat the large legs to large shimmering flakes of carapace.

As Justin looks closer he sees something out of place. There's a dark form encased in what looks to be a stomach or appendix of some sort. He starts as he realizes that there is a cloudy humanoid skull staring out from the translucent bag at him! The skull is also strange in that it has a purple gem embedded in its forehead.

Bethany sees Justin peering at an exposed bug stomach. She notes there's something odd in it. Her keen eye thinks it might be a skeleton of some mudcrawler.

Bethany, roll me a Perception please ..

Human Wiz 12 (Evocation)

"I thought about that Lady Bethany, but I prefer my coat over armor. However, if any of you are interested in chitin armor, I'll be happy to see what I can do for you!" Justin says as he pulls out a well-worn pair of leather gauntlets from a coat pocket. He tugs them on with practiced ease, and you can see that they are covered with a variety of burns and stains.

"I'll confess to having a few ideas running around in the back of my mind, but for the moment I'm interested in this!" he declares, pulling a stomach out from the mound of steaming beetle entrails. He wipes it off and slices it open with his iron dagger, pulling out what was inside of it.

"Alas, poor Yorick,..." Justin murmurs wryly as he studies what is now revealed to be a skull, with what looks to be a gem in the forehead.

What checks do I need here oh Dungeon Monkey? ;)

Justin Case wrote:

Well, I kinda gave that one as a freebie on Perception, so no reall checks needed for the moment, unless you wanna try some Knowledge checks..

When Justin gets closer, he realizes that the skeletal remains are not in a stomach. Rather, it looks as if the beetle's internal systems walled the corpse off in an pearl-like shell. When Justin pulls it free of the bug juices, he finds a leather armor-clad form encased in a thin covering of a mother-of-pearl substance. The substance breaks easily enough when hammered, shards of pearly material flaking off onto the grey bark.

The skeleton is wearing leather armor and a pair of odd metal gauntlets with enameled flames racing up them. A backpack is slung across its bony back, and a pair of boots inscribed with the caduceus of the Greek power Hermes sit on its feet. The previously-mentioned purple gem sits twinkling on its bleached white brow.

Actions?

Hey that battle took us over the 8K mark! Huzzah! Five figures here we come!

Swire steps around Justin and pockets a piece of the shell before stripping the corpse of it's valuables. "What? This berk ain't going to be needing it."

Ekuur gives Bethany an appraising look, one he hadn't given before. "It would seem that my homeworld may not be as different as I first thought. Chitin armor is also quite common on my world; it is typically a step above wood or bone. However, while I thank you for the offer, Justin, I will keep my bronzed-steel." He gives his breastplate a hit with his fist, as if almost trying to ensure himself it's still metal.

"Heh. <cough> Your right, of course Mr Swire." Justin says in casual agreement as he examines the skull. If the gem does not come off the skull easily, he takes the skull to examine before he breaks it to remove the gem (later).

"I don't want to take too much time now, we need to try and catch up to the Khastaa, but i'll take a look at the gauntlets and boots while we walk. It'll give my mind something to focus on besides how sore my feet are!" He smirks.

"No trouble at all Ekuur! Just let me know if you change your mind. I'm no great hand at item creation no feats for that yet but I've been tossing a few ideas around, I think I might start experimenting!" He says with the air of one whose has never considered what might happens if an experiment goes wrong,...

As they walk, Justin examines first the gauntlets of the hapless bug-devoured explorer, then the boots, then the skull/gem.

The shrouded form lights up with aracne energy. Everything it wears is magical

I'm just going to give you the laundry list, and you guys can decide who gets what:

On body:

  • Dimension Stride Boots
  • Ring of Mystic Fire
  • Handy Haversack
  • +2 Leather Armor
  • Gauntlets of Eldritch Fire
  • Cloak of Resistance +2
  • Vibrant Purple Ioun Stone (able to store 3 levels of spell energy)

In Haversack:

  • Quiver of Ectoplasmic Might*
  • Ring of Lockpicking
  • Armband of Maximized Channeling*
  • Ring of Adamantine Touch
  • Sawtooth Sabre, Arpeggio*
  • FoWP, Bronze Griffon
  • 5,000 GP

Descriptions of unique Magic Items (If any others need description I'll post if asked)

Arpeggio:

Spoiler:
This sawtooth sabre's blade is fashioned completely of clear cut crystal. It's hilt is gold-chased mithral with a pommel fashioned of a dark-red cabochon ruby. Inside the ruby small white musical notations appear and disappear randomly. The word 'Arpeggio' is inscribed across the quillions in planar common.

Arpeggio is a +1 Harmonizing Crystal Echobalde. It normally functions as a +1 sawtooth sabre, but is enhanced by your musical ability. If you use your bardic music ability while wielding this weapon, the blade resonates in harmony, dealing additional sonic damage on each attack equal to half your bard level (ie: 5 levels, 2 extra dam per atk).

Arpeggio also accompanies you in song if drawn, granting a +2 competence bonus on Perform (sing) checks. In addition, if you hold it when you begin a bardic music effect, the weapon can continue the effect for you, allowing you to focus on other efforts. One round after you begin a bardic music effect that allows or requires continued use or concentration (including inspire courage, countersong, fascinate, inspire competence, inspire greatness, song of freedom, and inspire heroics), the weapon picks up and continues the performance flawlessly for 10 rounds, until you start another bardic music effect, or until you command it to end as a swift (mental) action.

Quiver of Ectoplasmic Might:

Spoiler:
This quiver is constructed of a black material, which seems to be overlain with silvery spiderwebs adorned with small glowing pearls. The patterns shift minutely over time.

If a non-magical arrow is placed in the quiver, after one round it is transformed into translucent ectoplasm. The arrow can now strike incorporeal targets without penalty. The transformation also adds an extra 1d6 damage to the arrow if the weilder is psionically gifted. This energy is considered psionic for damage reduction purposes. An arrow removed from the quiver returns to its normal state if not shot within two rounds. Magical arrows are not affected by the quiver.

Armband of Maximized Channeling:

Spoiler:
This armband allows a healer with the channel energy ability to choose one channel per day to maximize its power.

Fortunately I have a copy of the MIC nearby.

Ring of Adamantine Touch:
When wearing this ring, your melee attacks(whether natural or with weapons) count as adamantine for damage reduction.

Ring of Mystic Fire:
Provides a boost to your fire-based spells. When casting spells with the fire descriptor, gain a +1 competence bonus to caster level. Also, the ring has three charges per day renewed each day at dawn. Spend charges to increase damage of next fire spell. (1: +2d6, 2: +3d6. 3: +4d6)

Dimension Stride Boots:
+2 bonus on Jump checks. This is continuous. Also, five charges per day, spend charges to teleport a short distance. Must have line of sight and effect to destination, can't bring other creatures with you. (1: 20ft, 3: 40ft, 5: 60ft)

Gauntlets of Eldritch Fire:
When you activate these gauntlets, your next eldritch blast does fire damage

I can't find the Ring of Lock-Picking anywhere, which is odd because I know I've seen something like it before. EDIT: Wait, did you mean the Lockpicking Ring? (+5 to Open Lock checks, can use Knock once per day)

Anyway, I'll take the Lockpicking Ring and possibly the +2 Leather Armor, if no one else wants it.

A grey-furred being, carrying a spear and a bandoleer garnished with the veined seeds the World Ash seems to drop everywhere.
