Jessibel is a bit surprised at the brief but heartfelt outburst from the normally cool and collected Leora. She considers saying something to try to raise the cleric's spirits, but when she sees the intent yet faraway look in Leora's eyes she keeps her mouth shut.

I'd like to comfort her, but maybe at this moment experiencing pain and anger is what's best for Leora...what's best for all of Kintargo. Outrage, anger, and pain will be the kindling needed to inflame the city against the despot Barzillai.

The bard's roused from her own musings by Kiri's offer, perhaps the most surprising development of all.

"Thank you, Kiri--that's very generous of you. Where do you live?"

Jessi goes on to say that she'll ask Sabrina about it but warns the strix that her frenemy likes her creature comforts and may already have taken a liking to the Long Roads. Then she asks if Kiri might be interested in staying at the coffee house as well, pointing out that there's safety in numbers.

"A sap!" Jessibel says suddenly before the group can break up. "Not you, silly!" she says to Dom as she pushes past him and approaches Davina.

"Mrs. Eradon--would you be able to pick up a sap for me at the weapon shop? I'd like to have something nonlethal to use in case we have to battle the dottari at some point or someone else we want to take alive for questioning."

Admitting that she has no clue how much one of the weapons costs, she also asks Davina if it'd be alright if she could pay the woman back later.

"Oh--and get me a black one if you can. Red is my second choice." Seeing Davina's puzzled look, an equally perplexes Jessi asks, "What? Don't they come in different colors?"

Jessibel's outburst snaps Dom out of his reverie with a small startle. What's she going on about now?

He reaches down to his belt, pulls his own sap off, and shows it to Jessibel. "If you pay two sails for one, you're getting robbed. And, uh, I doubt they're gonna have custom colors 'nless you wanna wait a week." He chuckles, "Course, you could magic up the color on it, but you're gonna get to the point where you're stoppin' every three steps to refresh another prestidigitation."

"So, are you ready to head to the Devil, or are you still puttin' stuff on your shopping list? Maybe a nice roc egg...?"

"Of course I'm ready!" Jessibel huffs before proving herself something of a liar a moment later when she again approaches Davina and hands her 2 gold sails. "If you can afford two saps with this, please buy them--I can give one to Sabrina."

"Are we going to split into two groups again?" Jessi asks aloud to no one in particular.

By my calculations...Dom, Lucius, and Davina are going to the Eradon home (aka the Bomb Shelter).

Jessibel and Leora are going to the Long Roads Coffee House.

Kiri and Lydia are undecided as yet, but it'd be easy enough to escort Lydia to Songbird Hall before heading elsewhere.

Davina takes the sails from Jessibel. She makes a quick notation adding the saps to the shopping list.

"Should we meet for dinner at the coffee house or just meet in the morning for breakfast?" she asks. "It's easy to lose track of time down here, but I don't think it's that late in the day. I can spend the afternoon and evening trying not to blow out the windows again, and I should write some notes up for my next book's plot." she grins at Dom and Jess, "There will be no mention of grimple puke in the next installment. That could be interesting though..." she trails off into thought.

"As a matter of fact...I am!" Jessi announces with a grin of her own. "I was planning on cornering Leora tonight to see if she'd tell me a bit about Cayden Cailean, his worshipers, and his teachings, and I figured a bottle or two of red wine would make the perfect bribe. Now, though, it sounds like the whole group will be gathering tonight, so we should probably buy some ale and stronger spirits as well. Laria doesn't happen to serve anything stronger than coffee, does she Leora?"

The bard goes on to tell the cleric, "You see, I've paid lip service to the gods I'm expected to: Abadar for my family's financial affairs...Shelyn for success in my theatrical and opera house ventures. But I'm really happiest when I sing for folks in taverns or even (the girl blushes a bit) when I sing, dance, and perform as a 'front-room girl' at the Three-Legged Devil. I may be expected to worship Abadar and Shelyn--and I do--but I think the Drunken Hero's closer to my own personal beliefs and the things that bring me happiness."

To Dom she adds, "Don't worry--I'll be quick. I just want to get a quick peek at the Opera Society's new headquarters and the neighborhood it's in; I haven't got my admission fee or tuition yet, after all. And the trip to the Devil should be quick--in and out, as it were--unless...you'd like to spend some time with one of the 'back room girls' after your rough day?"

Jessibel's mischievous grin returns in full force.

Sounds like we've got a consensus that Jessibel, Kiri, Leora, and Lydia are heading to Jarvis End while Davina, Domitius, and Lucius are heading to Kelimber's and from there to Villagre.

The seven emerge from the Livery, taking caution to avoid looking suspicious, and split up to their respective destinations. I will assume Dom carries the coffer as it is rather heavy.

Davina, Domitius, and Lucius

Davina, Domitius, and Lucius arrive at Kelimber's, and are able to readily purchase the items needed. While there, you see that he is talking about a magical cloak he recently acquired. "Found it in an estate sale. I'm no wizard but I can tell if there's a single perfectly preserved cloak in a closet of moth-eaten, faded old rags, it's likely to be magical. I plan on taking it in to the temples this Starday and see if they can tell me exactly what it does," he says, speaking to one of his regulars, but in a voice loud enough that you figure he's boasting a bit.

Jessibel, Kiri, Leora, and Lydia

In Jarvis End, Giveni Henge, owner and operator of the Three-Legged Devil, accepts Jessibel's resignation from her regular gig with a sigh. "Well, that's a shame, Miss Jessibel, you were pretty popular. Anything I can do to convince you to change your mind?"

After that unpleasant chore is taken care of, the four ladies arrive at the storefront recently converted to house the Kintargo Opera House society. The receptionist is a member of the Shelyn congregation whom Lydia recognizes, although doesn't know personally, and she recognizes Jessibel from her performance at the protest. "You certainly got their attention," she says with a chuckle.

Jessibel's question brings Leora back to the situation at hand. "Laria will spike your coffee if you'd like, or she's got some whiskey and beer."

She's surprised at Jessi's request for her to explain more about Cayden Cailean. She'd always been an acolyte, a youngster, a newbie, who was preached to, not the one who got to do the preaching. If you could call talking over a beer preaching, that is. "Um, sure. That sounds great, actually. I'll dust off my candles and holy book and do some readings if you bring the wine." Leora adds the bit about the candle and book to see if Jessi knows that's far too formal for the Drunken Hero.

Davina quickly glances at Dom and Lucius trying to siently ask them to give her am minute. She makes her way over to Kelimber on the way she notices the the Copper Dreadfuls. She picks up one of the books with the name Davinus Eradon on the front.

"That's a really nice cloak. I'll bet you got a great deal on it." she says quietly. "I could take a look at it for you. Then you'll have an idea of what it is, and might be able to skip the temple entirety. My rates will be much cheaper. All I want is a heads up when any interesting magical or alchemical items come in. I of course would still pay a fair price."

She holds up the book in her hand. "Did you want me to sign a few of these? You could get more coin for it if it's autographed."

Hopefully he's a fan. It would be nice to have good relationships with a few shopkeepers.

Assuming He Says Yes I Can Look:
Davina picks it up carefully and and examines it closely. She murmurs quietly to herself about whether she's seen anything so fine in the past and about what a great business man Mr. Kelimber is to find this is a pile of junk."[/b]

"You're Davinus Eradon?" the shopkeeper says with surprise. "Certainly! You could sign all of my copies if you'd like!"

He brings out about a dozen copies for Davina to sign, and is willing to let her take a look. Standard pricing for identification would be about 10 gp. He'll accept an offer less that that.

Davina examines the cloak carefully and is certain that his guess on whether the cloak is magical was correct.

On the way to their errands, a thought occurs to Domitius. At some point when no one else is withing earshot, he asks Davina, "Miss Eradon, you got any idea where to find the tools we'll need for workin' on locks? Wouldn't figure that to be something you can gt just anywhere."

While Davina is sorting things out with the shopkeeper, Domitius looks for a crowbar among the store's inventory. If they carry them, he'll buy one.

If they have crowbars here, let me know, I'll mark 2gp off my personal cash and note it in Dom's equipment. (I'm going to forego turning this into a blow-a-paycheck-at-Lowe's sort of affair, because I'll be damned if I want to carry all that crap. :) If we find we need more of that sort of thing, I'll revisit.)

"Watch this, first time in five years I leave Sabrina and Jesse alone, all hell's prob'ly gonna break loose," Dom frets out loud. "Startin' to wonder if I oughta find a place a little closer to them. Whatcha think?" He turns and asks Lucius.

Thinking for a few moments before answers Lucius decided to be honest. "If I were you I'd stay as far from them as possible. I wouldn't like to stay around people who once owned me, and I certainly wouldn't feel like I owed them anything but a swift kick in the behind for owning me in the first place." Lucius then realizes that he might be a bit too harsh and so he softens his tone a bit. "But I don't know what all they've been like, so maybe you feel like their your little sisters or something. All I can say is that you should be your own man and if that man wants to protect them then that's fine. I'm just not that kind of guy."

Sorry for the lack of posts, long weekend and completely overlooked it yesterday.

Leaving the Livery.
As Jessi made comments that seemed like bad ideas, implying drunkeness, etc., Kiri noticed the worry and heard her attempt to give poor Dom at least a little relief. She looked at the big bodyguard and said quietly, "Don't worry, I'll be keeping an eye on my apprentice so she doesn't do anything too outrageous."

For the rest of the stops:
Kiri was quietly watching what went on around her, she knew that someone had to pay attention and so she took the job upon herself. They first stopped at the tavern where she quite her job there and, as they left, Kiri couldn't help but ask, "What, exactly, is a 'front room girl'?" She seemed like she knew much more about it than she was letting on but she still wanted to hear exactly what her apprentice had been up to there.

When they reached the Opera House yet again Kiri found herself out of her element. These places where humans gathered were strange to her, she was rarely welcome in them, especially places like this one, so she kept her hood up and eyes open as Jessi took care of business. She was caught completely off guard though when the young woman spoke so openly about what they planned to do to the priestess and turned on her as her cloak started to ripple in sudden wind. Her voice was harsh as she said, "You never give that kind of information out so freely, always assume there are ears everywhere." The assurances of the priestess that they wouldn't give anything away did little to alleviate her aggravation but at least the winds settled down around her. The strix turned her attention to the priestess and said, "Be sure that they don't."

With that she moved slightly away in a huff as she glared around warily for any eavesdroppers.

Kiri Business:

When Jessibel asks Kiri what sort of spirits she prefers, the strix likely gets the impression that her protégé is beyond merely implying a state of drunkenness in the near future. Jessi thinks it's perfectly reasonable to celebrate the group's first successful bit of adventuring.

Jessi purses her lips as she considers how best to explain what went on at the Three-Legged Devil to her new feathered friend. "The Devil is part tavern but makes a considerable amount of its income as a brothel. 'Front room girls'--like me--sing, dance, perform some burlesque, and generally show a lot of skin to whet the appetites of the clientele. The 'back room girls'...well, it's their job to satiate those appetites. Understand?"

At the new Opera Society HQ, Jessibel rolls her eyes just a bit when Kiri snaps at her. "She already knew about my performance at the protest," Jessi tells her friend. "I think that little lapse in judgment--and proper decorum--is what got me the invitation to join the society. But you've got a good point: I like to talk and tend to talk too much. I'll try to watch myself in the future. I also tend to talk a lot when I've been drinking, so maybe I'll start talking less after tonight. But we're all friends and conspirators, so it's okay, right?"

Anticipating a glare or worse from the stern strix, Jessi hastily adds, "Fine--I'll shut up now."

Jessi stuff:
If Kiri could roll her eyes in exasperation she would, sadly she couldn't as they were fixed much like those of an owl. Instead she said, "Look, you don't need to shut-up, you just need to be more circumspect and careful about what you say and where. This is a bad place to speak such things, it's likely Thrune already suspects it and would thus work spies inside. talking with Kiri and Jessibel:

Leora listens to Kiri with growing concern. Kiri was right, anyone could be listening, and anyone loyal to Thrune or just eager to get a few gold sails could pass on information about them or the people they were talking with. "You're right, we should be more careful. Like Jessi noticed earlier, I'm not a very good liar. But we can be discreet."

Trying out her own advice, Leora says "So you might say that we ladies enjoy Three-Legged-Devils, (referring to the earlier mentioned tavern) but we aren't really fans of the two-legged ones (referring to Thrune)." She tries, but fails not to smile at the crude joke. After Kiri's question about the Devil earlier, she wonders if she knows what its name implied.

After their errands are complete, Leora goes with Jessibel and Kiri to the coffee house to meet with Rexus and tell him about their adventure.

I'm traveling for work Wednesday and Thursday, should be able to post once per day though.

If anyone wants to make a detour on the way to the coffee shop let me know. For the sake of narrative, I will assume both groups arrive back at the shop at about the same time.

Upon your return to the Long Roads Coffeeshop, Laria ushers you upstairs into her bedroom to speak privately. Sabrina has made herself at home, lounging on the halfling's bed (which is a double bed sized for humans -- perhaps the rumors of Laria's romantic exploits aren't that exaggerated) as she reads a novel, while Rexus reviews some notes.

When he sees you, Rexus stands up immediately and eagerly presses you for the details of your exploration. "So, what did you find? Was it truly an old safe-house? Were there documents or useful items left behind?"

"Jessi, Dom, my darlings, I have been so very bored!" Sabrina complains. "Won't you please take me with you on your next expedition?"

Leaving Rexus for the others to fill in, Jessibel moves to her dear frenemy and gives the redhead a hug. She'd fully expected to find Sabrina bored out of her skull; she was just happy her friend hadn't (so far as she could tell) turned to Rexus as a temporary plaything.

"Sure thing, Hot Stuff!" Jessibel exclaims, flashing a big grin. "There's nothing like getting chewed on by feral dogs and huge rats, puked on by ugly gremlins, and going toe-to-toe with sludge-dripping demons to get your blood pumping! You simply have to experience it for yourself!"

Excusing herself, the young bard hands a bottle of the red wine she'd picked up on the trek back from the livery to both Sabrina and Leora, heading to the room Laria had offered the group. Digging into her expensive (and thus far, mostly useless) backpack, the girl digs out a small tome. Returning to the others, she hands the blue book to Leora.

"That's my greatest treasure," she beams. "There are some pretty good drinking spots detailed in there along with more exotic entertainment hotspots. Sabrina and I already have checked out a few of the recommended highlights; feel free to check it out and borrow it for as long as you'd like."

Davina enters Laria's room. She hears Rexus ask what we found. "Yes it was an old safe house. We aren't sure if we found any documents. We found a box, but don't have any way of opening it. Didn't you keep a key? We are hoping that might be it or that someone here knows how to open locks without a key."

She finds a place to sit, and hopes there will be wine. She's tired. Even though she was healed almost getting eviscerated by lemures took a lot out of her.

Talking with Jessibel
"Thanks, Jessibel," Leora says, grateful for the girl sharing both the book and the red wine. Flipping through it briefly, she exclaims Wow, I didn't know so many places like this were tucked away in Kintargo! I mean, I've never really explored much, but it's good to know so many folks like to unwind after a hard day. I'll give it back in a day or two but I might have to borrow it again or get my own copy..."

With Rexus and the group
"Would anybody like some wine while we talk?" Leora uncorks the bottle Jessi had given her and starts by filling a glass for herself. "It sure was a safe house, Rexus. Dom went into the back entrance, and found a secret trap door. It led to this weird basement-dungeon, and deep inside there, Davina found this box." Leora hadn't really considered how well hidden the Silver Raven's trove had been until she'd said it aloud. And now, whatever information they'd left behind was in this locked box - yet another layer of secrecy!

Jessi and Leora:
Kiri gave a slight smile and nod at Leora's words and said, "Exactly, those two legged ones are such a problem."

Kiri found herself getting tired after such a long day and the discussion of the box was getting on her nerves. She sounded a bit irritable as she said, "Then let's open this box and find out what's inside of it."

"I could have a go at that," Laria says. "It's been a while but I've got a set of lockpicks around here somewhere."

She hunts around for a while and locates an old leather wallet with a set of lockpicking tools inside. She works for a few minutes, taking her time, and opens the coffer.

Inside are a large sheaf of papers, as well as a few scrolls.

If anyone has Read Magic available, you can use it. Otherwise, Rexus will be able to cast it and identify the scrolls.

The scrolls turn out to be a scroll of misdirection, a scroll of pass without trace, a scroll of undetectable alignment, and a scroll of whispering wind.

The other documents are written in a strange language that no one recognizes at first, but Davina notices words in Celestial, Lydia notices words in Elven, and Kiri notices words in Strix, surprisingly enough.

"This must be some sort of cypher using words of multiple languages to make it harder to decode," Rexus decides. "I'm pretty good with codes, so I could work on trying to decypher it."

"Sounds like a plan," Jessibel says to Rexus. Turning to face Davina but speaking to all gathered, the bard launches into another of her lengthy spiels.

“My grandmother told me she heard a story from her grandmother about the original Silver Ravens. Back during the madness surrounding Aroden’s death and the Chelish Civil War, Kintargo’s patriots battled summoned devils in the streets while something called the “Song of Silver” rang out around them. Lady Eldonna wasn’t sure how much was truth and how much was patriotic fantasy, but she claims her grandmother said the singer was in the Opera House, yet his or her voice could be heard all throughout the city. Most amazing of all, this song allegedly turned the weapons of all the faithful who heard it into silver weapons. Crazy, huh?”

”Oh—before I forget, I also gathered some masquerade masks for any among us who might not wish to be recognized when we’re out and about on rebellion business. Most of them have a bird theme or feathers, which I thought appropriate for the new Silver Ravens. And look!”

Jessibel casts one of her versatile prestidigitation spells, turning one of the black feathered face-pieces silvery. The bard places the colored mask over her eyes and models it a bit, turning her head this way and that and even doing a quick, graceful spin. ”And Rexus and I can do the same thing—only in reverse—when we need to make use of the silver raven figurines…meaning we can turn them black so they’ll appear to be nothing more than common ravens! Neat, huh?”

”And I overheard some folks gossiping at the Three-Legged Devil,” the talkative girl continues. ”They say it’s getting dangerous to walk the streets of Redroof and Temple Hill alone—especially at night—because the gangs are getting restless…possibly because the leader of the Red Jills has been acting crazy and unpredictable.”

Having addressed most of the important things on her mind, the bard bent forward deeply, sniffing suspiciously at the pants and boots portions of her prized suit of armor. "Do you happen to have a bath tub here?" she asks Laria. "If not, do you know of a bathhouse nearby?"

In response to the story about the 'Song of Silver', Rexus says, "I've heard crazier. That kind of has the ring of truth to it."

Laria points at a big washtub half-hidden behind a movable screen. "I've got that, and I've got a big kettle downstairs for heating the water in. Might be a little small for you, but you're not that big for a human. Otherwise there's a bathhouse two blocks from here, near the college."

"Oh--that will be perfect!" Jessibel gushes. To Laria she explains, "You see, I'm not allowed to go out alone--my friends are afraid that I won't keep an eye on my surroundings and will fall into a sewer or something...."

The bard does an admirable job of keeping a straight face as she says that. Leaning against a wall for support, Jessi pulls off one and then the second of her black leather boots and begins to give them another thorough cleaning using a prestidigitation spell while waiting for the hot water to arrive.

"Thanks for your hospitality," Jessi says with a warm smile before scurrying off--barefoot--to prepare her bath water.

Jessi's no prude or shrinking violet; she intends to bathe on the other side of the screen while everyone discusses things with Rexus and/or Laria. So long as no one comes on her side of the screen, she's good with the arrangement.

Leora sits back and relishes her wine while Rexus, Laria, and Jessibel talk, and Davina, Kiri, and Lydia ponder over the papers with all the weird writing. "I sure picked a smart bunch of people to hang out with," she remarks, not being able to make heads or tails of them.

"Wow, that's a great idea," Leora says, taking one of the masks that Jessibel is passing out. She looks at it, noticing it has a long, curved beak and wide round eyes that would really distract someone from her own facial features. "Is this one a raven too? I wouldn't recognize one if it came up and pecked me in the face." she asks, realizing she knows just about nothing about birds.

Davina listens to the story intently. She drags out her notebook about halfway through Jessibel's monologue, and starts taking notes.

A Song of Silver? Could be heard all over Kintargo? Interesting. I'll have to go through the family histories to see if I can find anything about it. Too bad Grandmother isn't still with us. She could have some ideas about what that might be..

"The Red Jills are a gang of thieves--tieflings mostly, from what I hear--who operate out of Redroof or Temple Hill," Jessi tells Davina. Although the leader of the Jills is unknown, I did get Sebbe to spill that this big boss is female. An idea flickers across Dom's face. "So that's got to be why Thrune was so damned intent on the Opera House, right? If that 'Song of Silver' has to be sung from there, it'd be a great way to deny it to his enemies."
