During the night's downtime, Sefayll will study the fallen giant's spellbook once more, transferring a couple of spells to her spellbook. Chill Touch, Ghoul Touch

Trying to fine-tune spell selection a bit, also.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

"Once we cross the col, we'll need to be more careful - it'll be downhill all the way to Jorgenfist, meaning that their sentries can see things like campfires and smoke plumes. Once we cross, it'll be hardtack and cold camps. We'll also need to stay off the giant road. They'll be watching that for sure."

OK, where are you camping?

"Can we camp at the *closer* of the good camps please?" All this walking is starting to get to Camlo.... "Do we need to set a watch to make sure we don't get snuck up on by that dragon?"

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

I wanna check out that bowl first. Thinking more, the saddle looks like a common way of egress, so I reckon the bowl would be off to the side more and not in the direct route of a giant's thoroughfare. Assuming it's not already claimed.....

HP 78/67, AC 26, T 14, FF 23, CMD 21 Performance 37/37 CHA DAMAGE: 5

Is the bowl up ahead an hour or two away where we expect to find the occupied watchtower? If so we need to hold back and camp rather than head in and kick the beehive.

Lore Master to take 20. Kn Local 31 regarding any red dragons historically active in the region.

At Hudak's urging, the group ascend the valley for another hour. It is getting quite dark by the time they arrive. The cwm is about a quarter of a mile across, the far side lost in shadow. In the bottom sits a small tarn of still, cold water, out of which trickles the stream that becomes the Coal River.

To the east is the pass into the Muschkal watershed. This close, a switchback path can be seen climbing the cliff to the top.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

"This looks like a good spot. Illes, can you conjure up another of those campsite domes? That way, we can at least have a campfire tonight. If that trail is anywhere near as steep as it looks, tomorrow will be an epic trek. We'll need all the sleep we can get tonight."

"Unless Mokmurian is a complete idiot, there will be sentries on top of the cliff. Wizards, do you have any way of checking out the top of the trail from afar?"

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"Sounds good."

Watch schedule.....Hudak, then Alwyn, then Illes, then Camlo, then Sefayll. How's that sound?

Peering up at the aforementioned cliff, the enchantress shakes her head. "Divination has never been my strong suit. The only means I have of investigating the ridge other than sending a scout is to listen for thoughts, which is limited in range. Far too limited to use from here."

The party settle down for the night, esconced once more in Illes' magical campsite protection.

The night passes quietly. Up here it is very cold, and the wind periodically sighs about the crags and ruffles the surface of the tarn. The night is bright with stars but the breath of those on watch steams in the chilly night air. But nothing disturbs the rest of the group and dawn turns the sky grey, then pink, as the sun begins to rise.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"I wonder what those stars really are." looks at the fire; "Maybe they're campfires?"

"My grandfather used to say they were the souls of great heroes burning bright."

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

"Maybe.....our souls will end up up there....."

The adventurers break camp and head for the path up the col. It is another giant-made stairway snaking up the side of the rise. The steps are high for a humans, making it another arduous climb. The sun rises gradually, and in the morning this side of the valley is in shadow.

Percption checks, DC 20:

Spoiler:
Diving out of the sun, swooping on broad wings, is a red dragon the size of a draught horse. It is aiming straight at the party as they climb.

I'm thinking you probably did the right thing. He's not diving to shake your hand.

Of course, you need to type the code right...

Could the rest of you please roll initiative too, please?

Illes?

While we are waiting, map.

The map depicts the stairway switchbacking up a portion of the cliff. The PCs are walking up it from bottom-left to top-right. Because of the steep steps, walking up the stairs is half-movement, and walking down is normal movement. There is no side rail off to the left side - you just fall down the cliff and maybe land on the stairway below. However, if you fall off the lowest part of the stairway, you fall down a very long cliff, represented by the light blue (fresh air). The dragon can freely fly over any section of the map.

You are walking up the bottom section - N-P/7-30. Please place yourselves. Don't forget the mules. If you failed the Perception check above, you are surprised.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Illes init 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 2 = 22

Hudak'll take P 15, with his mule in no 14-15.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Illes is on it.

Enchantress 8/Oracle (flame) 1/Hellknight Signifier 2; AC 24, FF 21, T 15, CMD 19; F 8, R 9, W 14; hp 72/72; Init +4; Perc +6; Irresistible Demand 7/8; Effects: Flying disk, Overland Flight

Mule in N-O/16-17 and Sefayll in P17, I guess.

You don't have a mule each, so that's the mules done.

Male Halfling Rogue/11 AC:26 HP: 92{92}

Put Camlo at P16

Alwyn?

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

I'm in O12.

Dragon 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (20) + 5 = 25

Initiative
Dragon 25
Illes 22 (surprised?)
Camlo 21+
Hudak 21- (surprised)
Alwyn 12
Sefayll 9

Map updated.

The dragon swoops low and breathes out a gout of fire.

OK, it's about 10' off the ground behind you. Everyone (including the mules), 6d10 ⇒ (2, 2, 6, 10, 6, 2) = 28 fire damage, DC 19 for half.

Illes, unless he is surprised (DC 20 Perception check).

HP 78/67, AC 26, T 14, FF 23, CMD 21 Performance 37/37 CHA DAMAGE: 5

"What the..." Illes dips to the side using the mule as cover for the dragon's blast of fire but when he pops back up the grin on his face is oddly out of place- possibly even maniacal. "Whooo! Look alive boys! Today is the day you become legends!!!"

Perception: 1d20 + 11 ⇒ (20) + 11 = 31
Reflex: 1d20 + 9 ⇒ (11) + 9 = 20 14 damage
MA: Inspire Courage +3
SA: Cast Haste on everyone

Just for information, assume mules have the stats of horses. They are caught in the blast too. Assuming they haven't been killed they may react negatively to this situation.

Camlo.

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

Reflex 3+4=7. Ouch.

Also, what is the upward reach of the tentacles produced by the Black tentacles spell? Surely it is at least 10'?

I don't wee why - the description says that the tentacles burrow up from the ground and form a field, not that they come from a central point. So I'm afraid that'll only work for ground-based targets.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Reflex 1d20 ⇒ 5

I don't believe I can roll this save since I'm surprised, but wtf.....
nts waiting for confirmation before I tally damage.....
not that it would matter.

damage tallied at 28 hp.

Spoiler:
Cloak of Fangs
Aura moderate transmutation; CL 9th
Slot shoulders; Price 2,800 gp; Weight 1 lb.
DESCRIPTION
Wearing this animal-hair cloak grants a +1 resistance bonus on saving throws and a +2 enhancement bonus to CHA. Furthermore, the wearer can force his teeth to grow rapidly up to five times per day as a swift action. The oversized teeth last for 1 round, during which time the wearer can make a bite attack. Treat this attack as a primary natural attack that deals 1d6 points of damage (or 1d4 if the wearer is Small). If the wearer already has a bite attack, the damage of that bite attack increases by one step.

CONSTRUCTION REQUIREMENTS
Craft Wondrous Item, alter self, resistance; Cost 1,250 gp.

Just a word on "primary natural attack". That means that, if it is the only attack you make, you get your full attack bonus and full STR bonus to hit and damage. However, you are probably more likely to attack with your teeth as part of the full round attack (it effectively gives you an additional attack as part of a full round attack) which makes it a "secondary natural attack". On that basis, your attack bonue with the bite is at -5 to your normal attack bonus and the damage is half your full STR damage bonus. These rules are summarised here.

"It is a small token, but hopefully useful."

Male Halfling Rogue/11 AC:26 HP: 92{92}

Reflex: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (6) + 15 = 21 Camlo slides himself into a narrow crack int he stone and takes no damage from the Dragons fire...

Ok, Camlo can probably hit the dragon, but I have *no* way of doing it any real damage except by sneak attack (oh, to have Jareen and his area effect cold spells....). I can jump very well though, if I were on it's back would it be denied it's dex bonus to AC?

Camlo recklassly jumps at the dragons neck in an attempt to get on it's back, or at least make it crash....

Acrobatics(jump): 1d20 + 27 ⇒ (2) + 27 = 29 Take 5 off that if it's just straight acrobatics

If I can also pull off an attack thanks to haste.

Attack with punching dagger: 1d20 + 16 ⇒ (16) + 16 = 32 dmg: 1d3 ⇒ 2

Sneak attack just in case it's applicable

5d6 + 5 ⇒ (3, 1, 3, 5, 5) + 5 = 22

OK, I'll roll the saves for the mules.
Mule Illes is riding 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (1) + 5 = 6
Other Mule 1d20 + 5 ⇒ (6) + 5 = 11

Illes mule collapses under him, and the other one give an equine shriek before falling on the path.

Illes needs to make a DC 15 Ride check or take 1d6 ⇒ 1 falling damage. He also needs to decide where he is. The dead mules are difficult terrain.

I'll adjudicate on Camlo's actions tomorrow. However, this is a surprise round so you only get a single action, so what you posted above isn't possible. I should have realised this with Illes' turn, so I'm going to allow him to cast Haste but not do his Inspire Courage.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

Bye bye, mules!!!

N/P Camlo will cower for the surprise round ;)

Male Human (Shoanti) Cleric 11

No move. I'm casting my favourite spell - Wall of thorns. The thorny growth covers N21-22, O20-23, P20-23 to a height of 20', trapping the dragon inside. The physics/inertia results of this could be quite interesting

Also, Hudak should delay until after me next turn so I can cast Air walk on him before he acts.

male Human Shoanti Fighter 10 xp 80962

gotcha.

The dragon gives a roar of surprise as thorny briars explode out of nowhere to grasp at it.

Map updated. The dragon is now encased in the brown stuff.

Sefayll.
