A question, did the goblins use their actions this round to arrive at their current positions on the map, or will they still act this round?
Good point - they were here so if your Perception checks were 20 or more, you are not surprised by them. If you didn't make a Perception check, you can make one now for this purpose.
Camlo Zenovia |
perception: 1d20 + 13 ⇒ (4) + 13 = 17
Camlo, realising he isn't going to get a decent position to flank the Dragon with Hudak, drops his rapier to the ground, and pulls out and loads his crossbow.
I'm guessing that will use up my actions... If not...
DMG: 1d3 + 1 ⇒ (2) + 1 = 3
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Most of the goblins charge up to attack their hated adversaries - the horses. But a few choose more dangerous foes. Two charge at Alwyn, giggling with glee. Other try to drag the new arrivals from their horses.
OK, the ones on Alwyn first. They charge. I imagine Alwyn gets an AoO in on one first.
Gb9: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (2) + 1 + 2 = 5 to hit, damage 1d8 ⇒ 1
Gb10: 1d20 + 1 + 2 ⇒ (11) + 1 + 2 = 14 to hit, damage 1d8 ⇒ 4
Next, the ones on Illes, Vethran and Elisile. They will attempt grapple checks. If they succeed, they will pull you off the horses and prone (no damage). They will gang up, so Gb1 and Gb2 will assist Gb3 on Illes, while Gb4 and Gb5 will assist Gb6 on Elisile. They haven't got any particular skill at this and so will provoke AoOs.
Gb3: CMB 1d20 + 1 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (3) + 1 + 2 + 2 = 8 v Illes' CMD
Gb6: CMB 1d20 + 1 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (14) + 1 + 2 + 2 = 19 v Elisile's CMD
Vethran.
Illes Elandru |
I would imagine Illes wasn't just riding up the trail with his rapier out. He'd pull it once he saw that dragon, but as far as I can tell he hasn't had the opportunity yet since he hasn't come up in init. So no threat for the AoO.
If Vethran bought combat trained horses, that will be a different story but I imagine these are plain old riding horses.
Elisile Starbrow |
Yeah, unfortunately Elisile doesn’t have a melee weapon in hand either, so no AoO from me. Elisile’s horse is definitely a riding horse, not combat trained.
Elisile manages to kick away the goblins trying to drag her from her horse whilst doing her best to control the panicked beast (although the kicking, white eyed horse probably deters the goblins as much as anything).
Vethran Tallomane |
Vethran's going to attempt to cast fly on himself while in the saddle, which will require TWO Concentration checks. One to cope with the violent movement of the horse and one to cast defensively and avoid AoOs. The first is DC 18, the second DC 21.
Violent motion: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (5) + 15 = 20 vs. DC 18.
Cast defensively: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (7) + 15 = 22 vs. DC 21.
EDIT: Success!
With a few arcane words and gestures, Vethran hands the reins to his cousin and soars skyward to gain a better vantage of the battleground.
Moving to N23 at a 45-degree angle, so approximately 30' in altitude.
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Alwyn squashes one of the goblins attacking him. Meanwhile, Vethran soars elegantly into the air, away from the goblin horde.
Hudak gets to roll to avoid taking bleeding damage.
The dragon takes note of Vethran's progress. Its head whips round to track his progress, before then sending a gout of acid in the wizards's direction. With a mighty flapping of wings, it launches itself into the sky.
12d6 ⇒ (4, 6, 5, 3, 4, 3, 4, 2, 2, 4, 4, 2) = 43 damage, Reflex save DC 22 for half damage. It then takes flight, provoking an AoO from Alwyn (if he can take one, as he squished the goblin). Its altitude is now 50'.
Illes.
Illes Elandru |
Illes draws his rapier but then finds himself fighting to remain in the saddle while it bucks and dances wildly.
MA: Draw Rapier
Attacking Goblin #1, if for some reason he drops after the first strike, switch to #2 for the second.
SA: Rapier 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (11) + 8 = 19, Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (4) + 2 = 6
Rapier 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (17) + 3 = 20, Confirmation 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (7) + 3 = 10
Damage: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (6) + 2 = 8
EDIT: Forgot about this
Control Mount in Battle: As a move action, you can attempt to control a light horse, pony, heavy horse, or other mount not trained for combat riding while in battle. If you fail the Ride check, you can do nothing else in that round. You do not need to roll for horses or ponies trained for combat. DC 20
Ride 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (9) + 2 = 11
I was going to shift that into a withdraw action for the horse's movement, but it looks like drawing the rapier is all I managed.
Alwyn Agnarrson |
I'm dropping Restoration in order to cast Cure critical wounds on Hudak. He recovers 4d8+9=29 hit points.
"I don't know if we can beat this abomination. No wonder they call it a devil!" Alwyn shakes his head in disgust. "Maybe we should let it and its goblin minions have some horses. Better that than dying in a hopeless struggle."
Elisile Starbrow |
Elisile is going to attempt a fast dismount into F26; DC 20 ride check to dismount as a free action: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (20) + 4 = 24
Ok, that worked.
Once off the horse she casts invisibility on herself, then moves, using stealth 1d20 + 21 + 20 ⇒ (6) + 21 + 20 = 47 to I25.
Elisile feints a kick at one of the goblins, using the motion to swing her leg across the horses back and leap out of the saddle. She lands, cat-like, and quickly casts a spell to render herself invisible, then edges away from the goblins and the horse (hoping the beast will have the sense to flee) to plan her next move.
Elisile Starbrow |
Just noticed Elisile's truly epic Stealth score of 47.
Well, it does include the +20 to stealth rolls for being invisible. It’s not all me ... but still not too scruffy for a wizard.
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
The goblins will try the same tactics again on Illes. They lose interest in Elisile (out of sight, out of mind) and giver her horse some stick instead. And the one on Alwyn will continue to have a go at him.
Gb3: CMB 1d20 + 1 + 2 + 2 ⇒ (20) + 1 + 2 + 2 = 25 v Illes' CMD
Gb10: 1d20 + 1 ⇒ (18) + 1 = 19 v Alwyn, 1d8 ⇒ 7 damage on a hit
Camlo's dart takes another goblin in the face and out of the fight. But the others carry on with manic glee. Illes is dragged from his horse and on to the ground by three of the little horrors.
Don't know Illes CMD - I can't find it on his character sheet - but they rolled a 20 anyway. He's now prone on the ground surrounded by homicidal goblins.
I'll update the map when I can access it properly at home tonight.
Vethran.
Vethran Tallomane |
Still recoiling from the horrific burns and knowing he could not survive another hit like that, Vethran grits his teeth against the pain and turns his bloodshot and scalded visage towards the airborne dragon.
"My turn," the wizard seethes.
Empowered fireball centered directly on the dragon's face. Check to beat SR: 1d20 + 14 ⇒ (9) + 14 = 23. Reflex DC 21 for half. 15d6 + 4 ⇒ (1, 6, 6, 5, 3, 2, 5, 3, 4, 6, 6, 3, 5, 5, 4) + 4 = 68 fire damage.
Immediately after delivering his arcane payload, the wizard swiftly dives towards the forest canopy, hoping to seek shelter from the dragon's retaliation.
Moving downward to F-15, through the trees and looking to gain total concealment/cover relative to the dragon. I'm honestly hoping he fails that save (he won't) and will think better of continued aggression.
Hudak |
Using acrobatics, to try and stand up from prone without an aoo on the Hudakmeister....
1d20 + 13 ⇒ (1) + 13 = 14
Then attack the goblin, if it's not too heinous an assumption I have Nualia's Tongue handy.
1d20 + 20 ⇒ (13) + 20 = 33
damage
1d10 + 13 ⇒ (5) + 13 = 18
"Boy is that potion gonna taste good..."
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Another goblin loses its life to Hudak's sword.
The dragon banks and swoops towards the road. It lands heavily and, questing about with its head for a second, lunges at where Elisile is hidden by her glamour of invisibility.
50% miss chance - low is a miss. 1d100 ⇒ 84 In case you are wondering (though I am sure you are not) it has Blindsense and so knows roughly where you are.
Otherwise, bite attack: 1d20 + 17 ⇒ (18) + 17 = 35, damage 2d6 + 22 ⇒ (1, 6) + 22 = 29
Illes.
Illes Elandru |
Is that possible? (acrobatics to stand without an AoO) I have been telling people no when I gm, but if I am wrong I might try the same for Illes. I think there was a provision to do it in one of the later 3.5 splat books but it had a dc of 30 or 35. In PF the only thing I know of in that realm is the rogue trick.
Elisile Starbrow |
Ouch.
I was rather hoping Elisile would be out of range of its blindsense, given its distance and altitude from her at the start of its turn. I guess not.
This may be almost entirely irrelevant at this point, but casting a Summon Monster spell wouldn’t be considered an attack as far as ending an Invisibility spell, would it?

It's not a big deal, as the goblins are rubbish at hitting anything, but I think you are probably right. I could roll an AoO for Hudak, but if he attacked while prone and then got up, with his roll, the impact would be the same.

You were out of range, but the dragon knew roughly where you were and the Blindsense did the rest. Summons do not break Invisibility.
Illes Elandru |
Illes does his best to cling to the horse as it bucks and rears, but when the goblins grab him by the cloak and yank he finds himself on the ground as surrounded. "Oh you little toads are going to regret that..." The caravan Varisian rolls to the side and lunges out with his rapier demonstrating a ground-fighting technique that could use a little work.
MA: Inspire Courage +3/+3 att/damage (competence) , +3 vs fear/charm (morale)
SA: Rapier vs #1 1d20 + 8 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (5) + 8 + 3 - 4 = 12
Rapier vs #1 1d20 + 8 + 3 - 4 ⇒ (9) + 8 + 3 - 4 = 16
Damage 1d6 + 2 + 3 ⇒ (6) + 2 + 3 = 11
Soft Fall Ride DC 15 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (17) + 2 = 19
No damage from falling off the horse.
Alwyn Agnarrson |
"Hey! Come pick someone your own size!" Alwyn walks towards the dragon, waving his sword menacingly.
Move to QR 15-16 before casting Holy smite at GH 22-23 intersection. It hits the dragon and goblins 4, 5 and 6. They receive 4d8=21 points of damage and are blinded; a successful Will 19 save halves the damage and negates the blindness. SR check 14+9=24.
Aubrey the Demented/Malformed |
Elisile Starbrow |
Between the dragon fear and the pain of the bite, Elisile is near panic, and can think only of escape – to have any chance of hurting this creature she needs more time to prepare! Trying to focus through the pain, she takes a step away, grabs for her bow, hisses out a word of power, and vanishes.
5 foot step to H25, ready bow as move action, cast Dimension Door to appear (still invisible) at AQ 7.
