Untrained; can't help; sorry.

"Are you hurt?" to the changeling.

The still-smoldering young woman actually laughs at that. "Yeah, I guess so, but it was mostly a nasty surprise. Does your Flame have some succor for one such as me today?"

Trinkis shouts, "Help me with the wheel so I can turn her!" The ship judders as the elemental rages in its containment ring, and timbers begin to buckle.

Everyone needs to make an Acrobatics check, DC 10. If you fail, you fall prone. If you fail by more than 5, you fall and slip to the edge of the deck (could be ugly - watch this space). If you are still on your feet, you can get to Trinkis and try to assist him turning the wheel with a STR check. The DC is 25, but as Trinkis isn't very strong he will just assist as necessary.

“Stay back. The elemental has gone powermad!” Jalana screams over the roar of the air elemental as she tries to keep her balance with the diving ship.(I thought it was a fire elemental).

Ref save: r14+9=23
Knowledge (arcana) aid another: r13+2=15 or r13+7=20 if using the Pathfinder stats. Either way she made the roll.
Acrobatics: r5+12=17 (using Pathfinder stats)

Nope, always been an air elemental. I just never got round to correcting you.

Thanks to Jalana.

"I've got it! It's feedback! We've entered an extremely strong area of magic! Trinkis is right -- we must get the elemental back out of the magical field!"

Acrobatics 1d20+11=16

Can she attempt to aid Trinkis in getting the elemental's attention? Or is this strictly a matter of strength? Just in case:

Use Magic Device 1d20+16=22

Man, other than the knowledge check, I'm taking a beating on rolls here.

"Gaaaaaah!" screams Trinkis as the jungle rapidly approaches, his eyes wide and the tendons in his neck bulging as he grapples with the unresponsive helm.

Gil will attempt to cast Fly on herself.

Concentration check 1d20+11=31

She won't "take off" unless 1) someone falls and she has a chance of reaching them or 2) there's imminent ship - tree collision.

No, it's just STR.

Rolund had been on the stern deck at the rear when the ship took the plunge. Gripping the railing helped keep his balance with the armor but as the ground gets closer and he sees Trinkis struggling with the controls, he lets go and slides towards the wheel to help him turn it.

He grips the wheel and throws his might at it but it barely budges. “Some help here.”

Acrobatics: r15+1-5=11.
Strength check: r18+3=21.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Cripes! Um, here we go: Reflex 7+14=21, so that's fine. Acrobatics 6+13=19, so that's good too. STR check to grab the wheel 16+5(action point)+2=23. Why don't we take that as our baseline roll, with others helping me?

"Sweet Arawai! What's going on?" Seeing Trinkis' plight at the helm, Janosz bounds over and grabs the wheel. "Now... Which way to you want to go?"

Edit: Or we can go with Rolund's STR check. My success brings the result up to 23. Trinkis then rolls a 13, hich brings the cumulative STR check up to 25.

With all of them pulling at the wheel, it begins to turn. With a groan the ship begins a gradual, ponderous turn and the prow begins to lift, slowing their descent. The ground is coming up very close now.

OK, for those who are lying by the rail, a Climb check DC 10 to hang on. If you fail that you slip over the edge but can cling on with a DC 15 Reflex check. If you fail that, you go over the side - more on that later. However, that might be better than....

The ship turns with agonising slowness. The bows begin to lift and for a few moments it looks like the Eagle might make it. But, before the ship is completely level, there is a crash as it skims the treetops. A particularly huge tree rears up ahead and the ship slams into it, massive branches thundering to the deck, sweeping crewmen from their feet and ripping holes in the hull.

Reflex save DC 15 or you take 5d6 damage from hitting a tree branch at high speed. If you are already prone you get a +5 bonus to this roll. If you fail this roll by more than 5, you are knocked off and over the side. Another DC 15 Reflex save, as above, means you manage to cling on before.

If, in either scenario above, you actually go over the side, you get yet another Reflex save, DC 15. If you make this save, expend an action point (i.e. don't add it to the roll) then you end up wedged up in a tree and take 2d6 damage. Fail this save, and you fall to the jungle floor - 10d6 falling damage.

m ROD! CLERIC 6 EXORCIST SLVR FLAME 5exp =125,535(cast as a 9th level cleric)

Rod made the climb check to hang on; then the reflex check to dodge the tree branch......
It smacks the rail, missing his head....he hangs on for dear life.

Does Gil's "readied" action to jump ship if there's an impending collision do her any good?

Reflex Save 1d20+5=12

Just in case it doesn't: Damage from impacting tree 5d6=11

Once she has her wits about her, Gil will fly to where Rod is hanging and assist him in climbing back onto the deck.

Gil wrote:

Nope. But it would have meant that if you wouldn't take falling damage if you had failed badly.

OK, so she's down 30 from electrical and bludgeoning damage and will aid Rodergo in regaining the deck.

An errant branch catches Rolund in the shoulder causing him to loose his grip on the wheel and knocking him off the ship. However a quick grab finds him dangling from one of the ship’s rigging that had come undone.

Ref save: r3+7=10
Damage: r16
Ref save to cling to the ship: r18+7=25

Meanwhile Jalana suffers no discomfort as her elven reflexes allow her to avoid the tree branches.

Ref save: r18+9=27

Uh-oh. The bomb! It’s in my cabin with my handy haversack. According to the rules the bomb automatically goes off. (Nonmagical, unattended items never make saving throws. They are considered to have failed their saving throws.) Damage (fire): r12. Damage (acid): r5.

Ref save for handy haversack: r15+6=21. Don’t know whether that means it suffered half damage or no damage. But even at half damage, I think it’s destroyed or maybe the broken condition. :(

m ROD! CLERIC 6 EXORCIST SLVR FLAME 5exp =125,535(cast as a 9th level cleric)

Damn that pyromaniac bonehead knight!!!
(edit)whew!

Isn't the haversack a dimensional space so while the haversack might get shaken about the contents are not stirred, so to speak? It's bad enough me hitting you with tree branches when you thought you were safe at 10,000 feet - I don't want to blow up your magic items too.

I didn’t put it in the haversack b/c I didn’t think it would fit all together. But if you think it would fit, then no explosion. :D

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

Is the ship, um, skyworthy with a pierced hull, or is its flying ability entirely dependent on the elemental ring? I guess the question is whether we have any chance of repairing the ship and fly away, or if we should plan on swimming back home to Khorvaire...

79/79 hp, 0 nonlethal; Effects: ; Perception +16, vs traps +20; Guise: Non-descript male gambler

Gil will continue her superhero act to aid Rolund. I'm sure she cannot lift him, but perhaps she can lighten his load to climb back up? Or at least bring a rope to him and tie it around him so others on the ship can pull him back up.

And thank you kindly for the healing, Master Xativa.

Now that I’ve had a chance to mull things over, I don’t mind if the haversack and its contents go up in flames or melt so long as you allow that Rolund was carrying the potion of heroism and one of the scrolls of magic weapon. Items he was planning on using in the upcoming drop. That’ll leave me, besides the above mentioned items, with my armor, my weapons, my shield, my cloak, and my holy symbol. Everything else is gone.

Besides it might make the scene more tense as the ship is in danger of catching on fire.

With the changeling's and warforged's aid, Rolund is able to pull himself back on the ship. Once there he moves his shoulder a bit to check his injury and surveys the damage the ship has taken.

Some combat training or Flame granted reflex kicks in, and Lightbringer manages to dive aside from the stray lightning bolt that catches Gil, but he is thrown to the ground and swept towards the railing as the ship drops, lurches and banks, barely managing to hang onto the rail before pitching over the side. Fortunately his prone position and the rail itself protects him from the branches sweeping across at head height to the deck a moment before the ship crashes into an enormous tree trunk.

Lightbringer attempts to pick himself up off the deck and looks about for anyone that needs assistance. Unless another less well off target presents itself, LB will try to haul Rolund back up. Str check: 18+4 = 22

How is the ship? And the elemental?

Meh, I'm OK - keep your bomb and haversack, it's fine.

Still waiting for Runzyl and Ez, but I expect they will survive somehow.

Trinkis regains control of the elemental and manages to pull the ship's prow up, getting it above the level of the trees, and slow it down. Raining sections of hull down to the forest floor, the Eagle comes to a halt just short of a rocky spire. Marrius peers over the side and winces. "Well, at least we don't need to float on water. Val, get a detail down there to get some tarp over those holes - that'll have to serve in the meantime. Sal, check out the containment ring, give me a damage report. Ferez, give a report on crew casualties."

As the reports come in, it turns out two of the crew were killed in the crash, and the containment ring suffered minor, fortunately reparable, damage. "I think what we suffered was elemental feedback," explains Sal. "It's a theoretical problem when a bound elemental interacts with a strong arcane field, causing excess elemental manifestation. That explains the lightning. What it doesn't explain is why the ship crashed, since it's naturally buoyant - it's a natural property of the soarwood hull. I can only posit that there is a very powerful warding around the Cairns preventing magical flight. Whatever that warding is, it is something I've never seen. I wouldn't like to hazard how they might have done it, but I know it's too powerful for me to negate."

Marrius nods. "The ship is going to need repairs before we can set off again. I don't like hanging around here but with the hull damaged like this we might not survive the next storm we run into. It sounds like you are going to have to go to te Cairns by foot. We'll wait for you for a week, but then we are out of here, arrangement or no arrangement."

And here I was thinking it was the elemental that tried to crash the ship. I had been wondering about the soarwood.

Rolund concentrates for a moment of healing as he listens to the captain give orders and the crew makes their reports. After they are done, he says, “Agreed, Captain. One week. Before we leave, do you need any assistance?”

Two uses of lay on hands to get back to full hps.

Lightbringer nods. “We will do what we can to help you here Captain, then we had best be on our way.”

The paladin retrieves his equipment and Basher from below-decks and prepares to leave.

Survival check, DC 15:

Spoiler:
It looks pretty trackless and rugged down there. You reckon you might be lucky to manage 4 miles a day (at the pace of the slowest, LB, at 20' per round). You are probably about 10 miles from your objective, so (unless you come up with a cunning plan I haven't thought of) you expect to get there on the third day.

Runzyl is completely at a loss for what to do, though he responds to Rolund's cries for aid in turning the ship (my STR check doesn't really matter at this point, as we obviously had enough to handle it). Still on deck when the ship crashes, the elf is struck hard by wayward branches and suffers a serious concussion. His forehead oozes blood and the surrounding tissue is angry red. Still, the Valenar stands despite his injuries.

"Wha- what just happened?"

Oh; I missed that part. I was just going with what I thought the wreck would cause...broke ribs, broke hips. I left out shattered feet cos that creeps me out for some reason.

I'm glad you missed his part (ooooer!). Anyway, moving on....

The Crimson Eagle ties up the rock spire about 80' above the ground. The rough pillar is steep but fairly easily climbed so the crew set up a ropewalk from the ship to the rock and then ropes to aid in climbing down. Meanwhile, they get to grips with repairing the Eagle from the stores on board the ship and the sound of hammering, sawing and the swearing of sailors mixes with the hoots and chitters of the jungle denizens.

OK, anyone got any ideas about how they want to travel, other than just walking there (which is the default option)?

m ROD! CLERIC 6 EXORCIST SLVR FLAME 5exp =125,535(cast as a 9th level cleric)

I have no other means to provide than walking.

Male Human Ranger 7/Eldeen ranger (Gatekeeper) 5/Fighter 1

I was hoping to use Kadesh as a scout, mostly to make sure we don't walk into impassable swamps or rock formations. Also, he can look for fords if we have to cross rivers. Other than that, I have no suggestions beyond walking.

Even if we had the means to fly or teleport or something to make the journey quicker, I’m not sure I would trust it after the airship debacle. If it helps at all, LB can force march without detriment.

As can Basher. Gil has nothing to contribute to transporting the party that I can think of.

There's always the Wile E. method. A giant slingshot, some feather fall tokens for each of us, and the general direction of the Cairns. :)

Well, it's thinking outside the box.

The party head into the jungle towards the Grey Cairns. The sounds of their shipmates are soon lost in the cacophany of animal life. The terrain is tough to navigate - steep-sided gorges choked with vegetation, rocky defiles slick with moss and gripped by scrambling vines. Insects buzz incessantly and orchids sprout from walls and tree trunks. It is hard-going, clambering over rocks and fallen trees and cutting through undergrowth. It is a hot, sweaty and dirty slog.

Perception, DC 25:

Spoiler:
You notice a strange wooden idol in a dark recess along the ravine you are moving along. It is covered in moss and partly rotted, making it difficult to make out what it might have been

If you made the Perception check, try a Knowledge (Geography) check, DC 25:

Spoiler:
You think the idol might be of Seren origin, from the tribespeople who dwell on that island near Argonessen and who worship dragons.
