Well- If I had it right the dragon is only 15' or so off the deck right now. I thought it would take very little movement for Trinkis to move just enough to hit the dragon with the elemental ring- not the ship itself. I had rolled 12d6 based on what GG had posted before about elemental ring damage. I'm not exactly sure about orientation. I thought he would just need increase altitude by 5' or 10'

Grand Lodge

Male Human Expert 5

My thought was to yank the controls and climb a bit, hitting the dragon with the elemental ring. Why would that reduce our speed so much?

Ramming does 12d6 damage; the elemental ring does 3d8 (fire or bludgeoning [air]). Anyone thinking of putting the pedal to the metal (ie pushing the elemental for more speed). If its possible.

"More power, Trinkis."

Possible changes to initiative order.
Current complete initiative: (round 3)
Angels of death 24
Orlaith & White Dragon 23
Rolund 20 (readied action to cover Ezreal)
Janosz 19
Jalana 17
Gil 16
Valentis 15++
Marrius 15+
Rodergo 15
Barkhad 14
Lightbringer 13+
Runzyl 13
Salvorazo 11
Ezreal 10
Ferez 6
Trinkis and movement of ship 4
Other crew 0

Ok, my mistake about the ring damage. Speed it is. I'm out for the day if you want to figure out what we are capable of.

Grand Lodge

Also since the dragon is 15 ft off the deck, pulling up a little would let everyone pound it for one round. But then it will return the favor.

damn. That sumbich is in range for a channel energy pulse too.

The thing is, it doesn't matter how fast you are travelling forwards, because you are not hitting the thing with the front, pointy end of the ship, you are hitting it with the elemental ring as the dragon matches speed with you. You cannot fly upwards as fast as you fly forwards - the maximum rate of inclination is 45 degrees and you move half speed while doing so, so your upward momentum is half you forward momentum (50') which will significantly reduce the damage. In reality, an experienced flyer would probably just stop and let the ship fly on (the dragon is much more manoeuvrable than the ship) and avoid the damage but as we are round-based that would be unfair to you guys. The ramming damage is for head-on ramming of one ship by another, not side-swipes and so on. The rules in the book (Explorers' Handbook) are frankly somewhat vague and largely designed for ship-to-ship, waterborne combat so I'm having to adjudicate as we go along, nor do the rules readily incorporate fighting on a moving platform. But if you gently nudge the ship upwards a few feet, you won't actually do any damage to it. You have to slam it upwards, which is basically a sharp upward manoeuvre at 50' a round. As speed has been reduced by 50', damage is reduced by 5d6 to 7d6. I mean, you hit the damn thing (though it gets a save) - don't get greedy.

Trinkis causes the ship to lurch upwards, hitting the dragon with the spar connecting the containment ring to the rest of the ship. It smacks it in the ribs, and more sections of bone and dried-out scales fall to the deck. It painfully hauls itself over the ring, its ribcage now mostly staved in, and lands on the main deck (at BB-DD/12-14) where it spies Ezreal and Rolund. It spitefully breathes out a gout of frigid air, engulfing them (19 points of damage, Reflex DC 22 for half - that'll hit Roly, Ez, Gil and Ferez - Gil gets a +2 to the check from partial cover, due to her standing inside the door. By the way, not too sure where Salvorazo is - is he front or back? And Ferez is Aiding Ez, so unless anyone has other ideas I will assume she is at II14. Also, LB gets an AoO against the retreating dragon.)

Orlaith turns to sneer at Rodergo. She flings out an arm and a tiny blue orb spins out towards him. It expodes in a caerulean globe streaked with black that washes over the rear of the deck. As the energy blast evaporates, its power spent, both Orlaith and the dragon appear partially healed. (Hit with a metamagicked fireball, affecting Rod, Runzyl, Marrius and Valentis as well as Orlaith and the dragon. Doing 31 damage, half cold, half negative energy, DC 18 Reflex for half damage.)

More arrows sweep in from the angels. One hits Janosz (7 damage) and two more hit Ezreal (12 and 12 damage).

Rolund grits his teeth as the cone of cold washes over him. As he sees the arrows being launched, he interposes his shield to protect Farlowe.Ref save: r14+7+2(prot. frm evil)=23. Readied action to Aid another (DC 10): r16+7=23. Ez’s AC increases by +3 while mine decreases to AC 14 (16 vs. evil).

Don’t know if that’ll change the effects of the attacks on Ez or how Rolund’s initiative will change if at all.

Janosz

It doesn't change the results of the arrow attacks. In terms of Rolund's initiative, it puts you at the top now, I guess, but probably won't change anything much that has happened. Might be interesting next round....

Just realized that the dragon landed on a redshirt that was in BB13. +_+

I think he's either lying on the deck bleeding or (more likely) he went below decks to rouse his fellows in a feisty defene of the ship - at some point.

Well, Salvorazo needs to make his frightful presence save but depending upon where Gil placed him (bow or stern), it may alter his save. If he is in the stern, he’ll get a +1 to his fear saves from Jalana’s inspire courage. If he is in the bow and close to Rolund, he’ll get a +4 to his fear saves from the aura of courage.

I didn’t roll the frightful presence saves for Marrius and Valentis but I was always under the impression that you had to witness the dragon attack to make the saves. However, looking at the MM the dragon only has to charge, attack, or fly overhead to create the effect which Orlaith’s dragon has been doing.

Here are their belated saves – Marrius: r11+1+1(inspire courage)=13 (shaken); Valentis: r11+3(not raging)+1(inspire courage)=15 (shaken).

Green Giant wrote:

He's already done that (and failed badly). His choice is to stand near Ez and Roly (and get dragon breath-ed) or by Rod (and get cold/negative energy fireball-ed).

As the man says - Janosz.

19 SAVE ROLL!!!!!
Still f+$+in hurt...

79/79 hp, 0 nonlethal; Effects: ; Perception +16, vs traps +20; Guise: Non-descript male gambler

Salvarazo is occupying a position similiar to Gil's, utilizing partial cover, but in the stern. He peeks out the door at just the wrong time...

Reflex Save vs. Cold/Negative Energy Fireball: Save vs. Cold/Negative Energy Fireball: 1d20+4=6 Even with forgotten +2 for partial cover, he's hit full on. I guess being shaken, he would have had an additional penalty on his roll, but it's irrelevant.

Salvarazo takes the full 31 points of damage, down to 9 hp.

Gil does much the same, peering out to see what the dragon does, she realizes too late its intent and it caught directly by its breath.

Reflex Save vs. Dragonbreath 1d20+4+2 (partial cover)=9

Gil takes 19 points of cold damage, down to 31.

We need a Reflex save from Ferez, as she is near Ezreal.

FEREZ save r 16+3=19
She growls and hisses.

Well, if you rolled a natural 16, she has saved (her modifier is +9, not +3 - I think you mixed up her Fortitude and Reflex) and as she has Evasion, she takes no damage.

HPs: 96 / 96, APs: 11/8 Effects: Karnnathi Wizard (Universalist) 12 / Cataclysm Mage 1

Though he manages to shield his face and duck out of the worst of it, the next two arrows drop the mage to the deck.

Well- I heroically avoid death :/
Reflex: 15+5 = 20 +4 AP = 24
So I had 7 damage (after false life) + 24 + 9 = 40
That's -3 for me.

Don't forget that LB's Good Devotion gives you DR 2/evil. At least the dragon in on deck now, putting it in reach of Runzyl.

Janosz keeps pouring arrows into the vampire.

5' step closer, using Rapid Shot and silver arrows. Attack 1: 14+13+1(PBS)=AC 28, damage 7+3+1=11. Attack 2: 13+13+1=AC 27, damage 5+3+1=9. Attack 3: 11+8+1=AC 20, damage 4+3+1=8.

Janosz hits the vampire three times. She gasps but remains on the back of her draconic mount.

Jalana.

Save vs. cold/neg fireball: 17 + 9 = 26. 15 damage, then, leaving me with only 86. :)

I wasn't on deck when LB kicked in the Good Devotion. Not one of its targets.

Not in a good place to put much thought into a move, so feel free to delay Gil. Question, though - if she tried to light 'em up with a Lightning Bolt, can she hit dragon, Orlaith, and no one else?

How about dropping a Haste into the scrum? A hasted Runzyl, Lightbringer and Valentis is a thing of beauty and wonder.

A man far wiser than he appears, that one. I realized my usual "default" in a melee had not occurred yet after I stepped away. I can include seven allies that I have line of sight to that are within 30' of each other. Who all qualifies? I'll work on my map to decide, but will take suggestions from the assembled. Lightbringer and Runzyl would be included - who else is the question.

I'd recommend getting Rodergo in on it too, as he needs to touch people for healing and +30' of speed certainly wouldn't hurt. The bonus to AC and Reflex saves is useful for him, too, as he is unarmored and clerics suck at Reflex anyway.

I’m not really sure but I think you could get Lightbringer, Rodergo, Runzyl, Janosz, Marrius, Valentis, and Barkhad with your haste.

Cue Yackety Sax cos we're goin' Benny Hill on this Riot Ghoul.

The range of Haste is 25' + 5' per two caster levels, and the targets cannot individually be more than 30' away from one another. I would say that rules out the group by Rod and leaves only the guys guarding Ezreal's frozen, perforated corpse. Unless I'm reading it wrong.

Gil casts invisibility on herself and hustles across the deck in a path similar to Jalana's, trying to avoid the dragon and get a better position for haste next round.

OK, I'll need a position. If you prefer, someone can suggest one if your map is not up to date to avoid the dragon's AoO.

Heathansson wrote:

Let's say HH18 - that avoids the dragon AoO and I don't have to retcon too much.

Valentis, Marrius, then Rod.

Shaken by the dragon’s onslaught, Valentis rages to push her fear aside and fires her bow at the red witch.
Full attack
Attack #1: r13+7+1(inspire courage)-2(shaken)=19; damage: r5+3+1(inspire courage)=9.
Attack #2: r10+2+1(inspire courage)-2(shaken)=11; damage: r2+3+1(inspire courage)=6.
No fighting defensively.

“Heathansson!” Marrius shouts when he sees the furry shifter crewman crushed beneath the dragon; his broken bleeding body still twitching under the dragon’s rear claws. ;P
Full attack at Orlaith
Attack #1: r8+13+1(inspire courage)-2(shaken)-5(Combat Expertise)=15; damage: r1+1+1(inspire courage)=3.
Attack #2: r4+8+1(inspire courage)-2(shaken)-5(Combat Expertise)=6 (miss).

Rodergo

The arrows fly wildly, but none damage the priestess of Vol.

F#!@.

I'll cure mod on myself; burn a hold person.
Back to max.
That save was a b%&&!, and full damage again will take me out too. Then, no healing. Much as I love being a martyr,...
