Vital Strike Errata by James Jacobs and Jason Bulmahn, as official as i could find.
TL;DR:
My overuse of the feat came from the fact it said it could be used on an attack action, which is what a cleave/AoO/everything is. Got it now though.
I do have a question though, before it comes up in game (while we are clarifying this). I have an ability from the Psychic Warrior path I chose:
"Beginning at 3rd level, you can expend your psionic focus as a standard action to make a melee attack against two creatures adjacent to you. For every five Psychic warrior levels you gain thereafter, you can make one additional attack against another enemy adjacent to you."
This is a standard action, not a full attack, and it allows me (at current level) to make 3 attacks as a standard action. I have a good idea of what you are going to say, but I just wanted to ask anyway because if you dont ask, you never get a pony!: With this ability and Vital Strike, would I do additional Vital Strike damage on 0, 1, or 3 attacks?

TL;DR:
essentially yes Vital Strike cannot be used with Cleave.
No solid clarification on the AoO front.
Used to be able to be used with Spring Attack, but then wording for Spring Attack was changed. My overuse of the feat came from the fact it said it could be used on an attack action, which is what a cleave/AoO/everything is. Got it now though.

It's stuff like this is why I love 3e (and it's derivatives) - sloppy wording compounding with a highly complex set of subsystems derived from feats, spells and so on, leading to completely opaque rules. Frankly, the actual wording is no use - is expending your psionic focus the standard action, or the attack itself? Honestly, I don't really know. As it's supposed to be a cool power and there is an implication that Vital Strike could work, I'm inclined to allow it to use Vital Strike. But the caveat would be - how easy is it to regain psionic focus under the new rules, including feats which could unbalance this specific ability? I.e. is it a once per combat effect, or once per round, or somewhere in between (I'm much happier with the former rather than the latter)?
On the attack action front, it wasn't obvious to me either what one of those was until I looked into it for this issue. But on AoOs, once this is taken into account, it seems pretty simple - they aren't standard actions, they are AoOs, so Vital Strike won't work.

however, i have the Psionic Focus feat that allows me to focus as a move action. so potentially, if i just stood there, i could expend focus for my ability, then spend a move to focus to be focused for the beginning of next round. The only downside to doing that is that gaining psionic focus provokes AoOs (and expending it also takes away any bonuses i gain from staying focused for the time i am not focused).
So i can see how the rules can go either way (due to iffy wording) and i certainly understand the desire to err on the side of less vital striking.

Rather than continuing to bog down the game thread, I thought I'd mention the glowing effect on Falla Caesenri here. According to the standard rules for magic items:
Light Generation: Fully 30% of magic weapons shed light equivalent to a light spell. These glowing weapons are quite obviously magical. Such a weapon can't be concealed when drawn, nor can its light be shut off. Some of the specific weapons detailed below always or never glow, as defined in their descriptions.
I mentioned that it was glowing much, much earlier (right after Runzyl bought the upgrades to it). I continued to play up the idea of a visible, palpable enchantment since then. I figured, since 30% of all magic weapons glow (per RAW) it was not unreasonable for Falla Caesenri to be one such weapon. My apologies if I didn't make it clear (you're also welcome to veto the glow if you feel it's out of place).

I have received a gift horse and, rather than looking it in the mouth, I'm going to go for a ride. I will be far from home and computer for the next ten days or so. Please bot Gil in my absence.
Talk to you soon!
The gift horse in question was a ticket to a Caribbean cruise on the Carnival Magic. We had several days at sea and stopped at Montego Bay (Jamaica), Georgetown (Grand Cayman, Cayman Islands), and Cozumel (Mexico). We got to snorkel out to a shipwreck and hike to (and climb up!) a Mayan pyramid.
I know some of you are much more traveled than I am, so this might not sound like a big deal for you, but this was an absolutely amazing experience for someone that had never even been to the seashore. It's going to be very hard to return to reality...

oh i remember the first time i saw the ocean for real and not on TV (i was born and raised in the middle of nowhere Missouri (USA). it was awesome, and now i cannot imagine living more than an hour away from the ocean.
i am glad you had a good time on the cruise ship, i had seen a lot of bad things happen to those on the news. i want to take my wife on a cruise one of these days.

We went on a Caribbean cruise for our honeymoon, and it was very nice. No shipwreck snorkeling, unfortunately, and far too much food...
Fatey, here's a song for you.

That's a pretty sweet gift horse. :)
I think I had been to a beach in Florida one vacation when I was 12, but it wasn't exactly nice weather and didn't leave a good impression. Hadn't been back to a beach until I was 30-31 and finally saw clear waters, warm sun and all that is good about the beach. :)

Sounds like a cool trip. I've traveled a little bit but it's mostly been with business, and snorkelling in shipwrecks and visiting pyramids isn't normally big on the agenda.
The somali pirates could probably use a good accountant. Might be something to look into. Plenty of time to snorkel their wrecks between raids.

I must admit to feeling a bit guilty for getting such a great trip just for knowing the right person, so I worked pretty hard to be johnny-on-the-spot for my fellow travelers (we went to the port via motorcoach, so we had a ready-made group to hang out with even though we really didn't know them before the trip). I was the "nice young man" that helped the less-mobile members of the group get around. And when the hotel porters forgot they were going to unload the luggage, another passenger and I helped the driver unload them.
We had a couple of octogenarian WWII Navy veterans that had a great time. It was the least I could do to give them a hand if they wished to accept one.
Coming back home to below-freezing was a shock. An expected shock, but still a shock. I've been shivering all day, and I'm sitting in a heated office!

Then you are clearly not "in the know". I am "in the know". I shall gaze down upon you smugly.
Alternatively, if you look on the home page blog, it tells you. Nick Logue of estwhile PF AP fame tried to go solo maybe four or five years ago with (among others) a product called Razor Coast, a big pirates adventure. He took some money for pre-orders and then seemed to have a nervous breakdown or something and completely screwed-up - no product or anything, and lots of ill will. But after lying in Limbo for a few years Frog God Games have picked it up and are doing a Kickstarter on it.
Green Giant |
I see Razor Coast has staggered back into the light. I've pledged a couple of quid - anyone else doing so?
I was one of those who had originally placed money on the pre-orders way back. I never asked for a refund and with e-mail confirmation I'll be getting the physical book without pledging.

DM Voice of the Voiceless is running a Black Monastery game (pathfinder rules, 3pp considered upon inquiry) that i am in, and he is looking for one or two more players. here is the link to the discussion thread, if you are interested. There is no recruitment thread, as the game arose from a previous game (Iron Kingdoms rules) with the same group, which is also why the discussion thread is cross-linked with that game.

Paris is for work. The new job will be setting up and overseeing the bread for a French chain bakery (Paul - you have them all over London) so I need to go see the set-up in France and all that. I'll flip back to nights as I did before moving to Greece. More hours, but a step in the right direction career-wise. I've finally been here long enough to make the kind of contacts and get local names on a CV/resume that people recognize.
Also- I'll be so glad to stop being part of the under-the-table economy of Greece. This place is so legit that when paying me for a week trial they included the % of vacation and holiday bonus pay I had earned for the year during that one week. Was essentially nothing, but I wasn't expecting that.
ithuriel |
The chain is called PAUL. http://www.paul.fr/
Looks like they don't have any in Korea, but Tokyo, Singapore, and Taiwan have them. The only one in the US is in DC. Most are through Europe and the the Middle East.
Aubrey the Malformed |
I hadn't heard of Paul until I went to work at Canary Wharf, where there was on in the mall. They do very nice cakes - clearly, Ithers will be a key hire - and while I don't drink it the coffee is said to be good too. Apparently, these days London is something like the third largest French city by population (if you catch my drift) so I guess Paul followed them over.
