The squad heads down the passageway, and Akkedis stops in his tracks when he spots someone - a human, in rough industrial clothing. Though he has a pistol and a large wrench in either hand, he is just as shocked to see a large vesk peering around the corner.

The round hits the cavern wall in front of Akkedis, blasting a puff of dust in the vesk's face, but is otherwise ineffective. Shortly thereafter, you hear the barreling sound of metal on metal. You see a mine cart burl around the corner, and four identical quadruplets barely peering out of it. Each one of the human males look awfully familar...

Akkedis and Janilla are up!

Seeing the mine cart rolling towards them Akkedis shouts, "Off the rails! Fire on my mark if you can." Akkedis then shoots at one of the couplings, in the bend, holding the cart rails in place about 10 feet in front of the moving cart... Then moves down the line, bracing himself to stop the cart if the cart isn't unrailed.

I marked the map where I targeted. I don't think we can cut a rail quick enough, but the small piece of metal that join the rails together should melt easy enough.

Janilla - Holographic Clone check (1 = Talbot): 1d4 ⇒ 2

Janilla blasts Talbot, and one of the images winks out of existence.
Akkedis blasts the track coupling, but the laser doesn't even mar it.

@Akkedis: I applaud the creative thinking, but iron/steel has a hardness of 20, and 30 HP per inch thickness of material. Even at it's smallest (1 inch piece) you'd hit it (AC 5+4 for diminutive size), but to do any damage, it looks like you'd need something far more beefier than an azimuth lasrifle.

The initial shouting man files next to his fellow miner and fires a shot from his pistol at the first enemy he sees.

@Hikaze: I hate to do this, but there's no mechanic in the scenario for diverting the tracks. (Which is especially dumb, because when you look at the map the scenario provides, the tracks are pointing in that direction to begin with... -_-)

If it were a home game I'd certainly reward the creative thinking and allow it, but as per the SFS RPG Guild Guide, I have to run the scenario as it's written (ie. not possible to divert the tracks). You can retcon your turn appropriately.

@Akkedis: Come to think of it, I should have allowed you to do the same when it came to trying to melt the couplings on the track. If you want to retcon the target of your Round 1 attack to Talbot, we can (make a new roll, applying the non-lethal penalty or not, your choice).

Grand Lodge

In searching up the question of the tracks, it also came to my attention that I had an older version of the scenario - some of the statblocks have been updated, so I'll be using them going forward.

One of the Miner's attacks would have missed, so the 3 damage that Janilla took in Round 1 has been refunded.

Talbot pokes his head up from the cart, only to get pelted by a rock thrown by Janilla. It deals 1 non-lethal damage.

It's pretty clear that you want to bring Talbot in alive, so I think we can use the following clause in the CRB;

Tactical Rules > Injury and Death > Monster and NPC Death, pg. 250:

Most monsters and NPCs don’t have Resolve Points, so injury and death work differently for them. A monster or NPC reduced to 0 HP is dead, unless the last bit of damage it took was nonlethal damage (see page 252), in which case it is knocked unconscious. If it is ever important to know exactly when a monster dies, such as if you want to capture the creature alive, the GM can decide that a monster reduced to 0 or fewer Hit Points with lethal damage dies in 3 rounds unless it takes any additional damage or receives healing. If a monster or NPC has Resolve Points, the GM can choose whether the monster dies at 0 HP or if it uses the normal rules for dying and death.

Basically, going forward, if the last hit against Talbot is lethal, you'll have to scramble to stabilize him in three rounds, otherwise he will die. As a named NPC, I think it's reasonable. Starfinder's changes to nonlethal damage aren't the most graceful, but there's room to work within the rules here.

14 Alzandre
08 Hikaze

With Miner A dead, that puts everyone up at once - Akkedis pre-posted his Round 4 actions, now Alzandre, Hikaze and Janilla may act.

Wayfinders

male Human Xenoarchaeologist Technomancer/3 [init: 2; perc: 0] [HP: 19/19; Sta: 18/18; RP: 4/4] [EAC: 15; KAC: 16] [saves: 2/3/3] [pistol used: 0/9] [Starstone Compass: 0/1]

While taking a guarded step backwards, Alzandre reaches in his pocket, grasps his starstone compass, and casts Magic Missile at the remaining miner.

Force damage vs. Miner B: 2d4 + 2 ⇒ (2, 3) + 2 = 7

Alzandre's starstone compass is his Spell Cache (starstone compass, 1 /day)(Su): As the culmination of your early study of the fundamental forces of the galaxy, you have created a spell cache that allows you to store and access spells. While you don’t need your spell cache to cast your spells, once per day, you can activate your spell cache to cast any one spell you know and are capable of casting, even if you’ve expended all your spell slots for that spell’s level.

Second Seekers (Luwazi Elsebo)

Female LN Dream Prophet Akashic Mystic 5 (Arcanamirium Sage) | SP 0/30 HP 0/32 | RP67/7 | EAC 20; KAC 20 | Fort +2; Ref +5; Will +10 | Init: +3 | Perc: +12, SM: +9, Darkvision 60ft | Speed 30ft | Spells: Mystic: 1st:5/6, 2nd:2/3, Techno:1st: 1/1 | Active conditions: Stable. Shirt Reroll Used.

Janilla looks around and finds another good chuck or rubble or or and mentally tosses it at Talbot!

Telekinetic Projectile: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 to hit. Since you said that we will hopefully have 3 round to stabilize him, not adding the -4 for Non-Lethal. Though from here on out, I am going to be buying an Arc pistol or some other NL weapons....
Damage (Bludgeoning): 1d6 ⇒ 6

Seeing her spell go wide, Janilla continues to go forward so that she can keep ahead of the cart.

Hikaze has Mobilty so +4 against AoO just FYI

Hikaze draws his knife, but fires his laser Pistol.

"SURRENDER, Thief!"

Trick(Stealth): 1d20 + 10 + 1 ⇒ (14) + 10 + 1 = 25 should be hit - Talbot flat-footed
AZ LP: 1d20 + 3 ⇒ (10) + 3 = 13 Hit?
Damage(F+TA): 1d4 + 1d4 ⇒ (2) + (2) = 4

@Hikaze: Drawing a weapon is a move action, and Trick Attack is a full round, so you can't do both, unfortunately.

Alzandre bombards the miner with a barrage of force bolts, dealing 7 force damage and putting him down. (Miner B is dead.)
Janilla's telekinetically tossed projectile clangs harmlessly against the minecart. (Miss.)
Hikaze, now with a clear shot in the cart, blasts Talbot, dealing 4 fire damage!

As Hikaze looks to subdue Talbot in the minecart, it barrels into Akkedis, who is on the tracks!

@Akkedis: Make a DC 12 Reflex save to avoid being run over by the cart. Regardless of whether it hits you or not, you'll be pushed one space, either by leaping out of the way, or being bullrushed by the cart.

Talbot > Hikaze
Trick Attack check, DC 20+CR: 1d20 + 15 ⇒ (9) + 15 = 24 - success
Ranged, static arc pistol: 1d20 + 8 ⇒ (8) + 8 = 16 - hit
Damage, E: 1d6 + 2 ⇒ (1) + 2 = 3
Trick Attack damage, E: 1d4 ⇒ 3

Talbot zaps Hikaze with his staticaster, dealing 6 electric damage!

Janilla sees that Hikaze takes a horrible hit from the arc pistol. As much as she wants Tablot alive, she doesn't want to see her allies die.
With that she focuses as hard as she can, trying to burst blood vessels in Talbots mind.

Mind Thrust I (DC 16 Will for 1/2): 2d10 ⇒ (6, 2) = 8

As the spell builds to target Talbot, Janilla's nose starts bleeding, worse than it did while in the bar. She ignores it and continues to focus, the bright red blood dribbling on her clothing. When the spell finally goes off, her shoulders slump and she slowly moves farther back towards the entrance of the mine, hopefully somehow going to keep him from fleeing out of it.

I am out of 1st level spells, only have my Zero levels. Luckily I have stabilize, which she will use as soon as she can on Talbot if he drops.

Alzandre double-moves to catch up with the others.

@Akkedis: I mentioned that you had to make a Reflex save due to being in the path of the minecart when it moved –  sorry, perhaps it was a touch buried in the rest of the post.

Akkedis, DC 12 Reflex: 1d20 + 2 ⇒ (7) + 2 = 9 - fail
Damage, B: 4d4 ⇒ (4, 1, 3, 1) = 9

The minecart slams into Akkedis, knocking him backwards and dealing 9 bludgeoning damage!

Talbot, DC 16 Will: 1d20 + 4 ⇒ (8) + 4 = 12 - fail
Janilla scrambles Talbot's brain, dealing 8 damage!
Akkedis blasts Talbot, dealing 6 fire damage!

Akkedis' shot downs the rogue operative, who collapses in the minecart next to Hikaze.

Combat over!
24 damage on 23 HP - juuuust made it. :]

Janilla mentioned that she has the spell stabilize memorized and would use it at the first opportunity to do so, so we'll say she casts it immediately once the dust settles on Talbot.

On Talbot's person, in addition to his weapons, you find the charlatan’s stone, and a mk 1 ring of resistance.

You communicate with Mr. Philt, and relay that his package is secured, and it's fresh, not frozen. Mr. Philt understands, and says he'll bring meet you outside the mines to avoid any potential conflict with the townsfolk over the exchange.

- - - - - - - - -

Outside the mine, you see a vehicle on the horizon leaving a large cloud of dust in its wake. After a moment, unmarked cargo-hauler agrav unit slows to a stop, and Mr. Philt steps out of the vehicle. One of his two vesk minders follows behind with a pair of AbadarCorp™ brand ManTrap manacles, who slaps them on the unconscious Talbot. "My compliments, Starfinders. You're quick and efficient." He takes a moment to survey you all, then continues. "... though by the looks of it, it seems he didn't go down without a fight..."

Janilla looks to Philt and nods,"One thing I can say, he might be a piece of trash....our--the Starfinder Society's--trash...but he did learn one rule of ours...you don't go down without a fight. He put up a good one."

She thinks a moment then adds"Though now he is captured, what you do with him is up to you. He is a thief, a cheat, a liar and very likely could have been a murderer. Normally the Society would want to deal with him, but I think handing him over to you is better. Death is probably to good for him, and that is likely what he would get if we returned him to the Society." With that she smiles brightly at Philt and nods.

I have to say thank you to our GM zebeev. This was an awesome scenario when I ran it IRL (and I consider myself a above average GM), but I feel that the dialog in PbP was much better than what was done IRL. It might have been because of great players, a great GM, the ability to have PbP dialog, or all three--though #1 and #2 are where I am leaning. Thank you all for a great game!

Another hit from Talbot and Hikaze would have needed stabilizing :) Thanks for the great game! I guess getting back off Akiton is just glossed over in the scenario?

Philt waves at Talbot as his vesk companion lifts him onto his shoulders like a bag of manure. "... well, as I mentioned, our Punishment and Restorative Justice Department is quite capable of handling things from here on out. I assure you, Talbot will regret ever crossing the Corp."

As he turns around to see Talbot unceremoniously dumped into the back of the agrav truck, he looks to the town of Tasch in the background. "Those townsfolk; I wonder if the zeal and loyalty they demonstrated could be harnessed... clearly they have an industrious nature, and all they need is work..."

He looks back to you, then seems a touch surprised. "Sorry, thinking out loud here. You see, AbadarCorp has long considered the construction of a shipping hub outside of Maro. Such a facility would keep cargo destined for transport throughout the Pact Worlds away from Maro’s local gangs and criminal organizations... I think taking this Talbot out has left a bit of a vacuum that AbadarCorp can graciously fill... I have to thank you, as now I have two good bits of news to bring to my District Managing Deacon."

One of the vesk pipes up from the car. "If these yokels can maintain industrial mining equipment, wouldn't be too hard training them to work on freighters, eh boss?"
The other vesk nudges him in the ribs. "... more like if they can swing a pickaxe, they can push a broom!"

With that, everyone begins to laugh, and the camera pans up to the red Akitonian sunset. Music chimes in, and the credits roll.

A production card ends it all, with a nice animation of the Paizo golem logo , then a goblin enters from the right of the screen and torches it to the ground.

Akkedis checks the two miners working with Talbot to see if either can be stabilized, providing care if he's able and shrugging if it's too late.

Nodding in agreement with Janilla, "As we agreed they are yours to deal with, we were able to reclaim what we sought. Though I admit, I feel for the town. To have such hope given and then dashed, they will not look kindly upon the Starfinders or AbadarCorp for removing their savoir... False or not."
