A hypothetical Roll20

Game Master GureiKun

Hey!

Was wondering if anyone wants to get together once a week for some adventuring? Specifically on the website "roll20" (google if you dont know it... seems like a good, free, browser based virtual tabletop!).

Ideally would like 4-6 people total, i'm reasonably flexible but for reference i'm GMT+0 (london time).

I'm a very green player so probably shouldn't be GMing the game, that said i'm more than willing to step into the big shoes if the whole group are noobs or if everyone else REALLY dosn't want to GM - and they dont mind some niave incompetence :P.

Anyone up for some adventure?

Hell, I'll join in.
Any day you have that you'd like?

Do you dare to delve into the depths of Monster Hill?

Shadow Lodge

I am super keen to learn how to set up maps in that damn thing to align with the grid. I like experimenting with new VTT's to learn which ones are best, and Roll20 has a lot of promise and not being able to get a map up has been a complete dealbreaker.

Dark Archive

I can't play but have been playing on roll20 for a while it is quite easy to set up also if you get the pdfs of the flip mats from paizo they can be easily resized and fit with roll20s grid. It is the best VTT I have found.

Gosh i thought i'd posted a reply but for whatever reason it didn't show up! Righty i'll play catch up and try and cover everything!! XD

@Thickfreakness - Great! We're an army of 2 now ;). I'd prefer a weekday if possible as i have a weekly RL group at weekends and wanna spread my adventuring out ;)

@Monster Master - i think we have a GM then? tell us more (like what exactly is monster hill, starting levels, class/race restrictions etc...)

@both of the above - three of us total if we can fix a time, i'd call that a starting minimum? Anyone know anyone else who could join? (i'm cool with noobs). I can think of maybe one person who might play with us but i'm not sure, if i ask him it will definitely be a weekday evening though.

Also what "kind" of game do you guys like? By this i mean Roleplay:Pure combat ratio, evil or good campaigns, Min-max optimized PCs Vs Sub-optimal Quirky Pcs. I'm fairly flexible across all of the above since i've landed my perfect table for my RL group.

@Avatar-1 - I've used Roll20 a little bit to do some amateurish GMing with a friend of mine (1 gm one player, its different!). We dont actually use battle maps at all! However we do use geographical maps and i've been able to tinker with them so that they are well enough aligned for figuring out rough distances/travel times on the map and within city maps. My handy hit is to set the map elements to the "maps" layer once you've got them how you want them lol... i know that from harsh experience with an annotated map of cheliax that shifted several hundred miles east lol....

I imagine if you are using a battle map with an inbuilt grid you'd need something more exact though... i'd be interested to know what you find?

@Brad2411 - the best eh?... i'm lucky then cause it was the *first* one i found lol. mind sharing the knowledge about how to get those pdfs perfectly aligned on the grid? Any idea how to do it with regular images? Any other general Roll20 pearls of wisdom?

Shadow Lodge

I have the background maps, that's not the issue (I play and GM in Pathfinder Society once or twice weekly, usually using another VTT). I just can't work out how to align the grid.

brad2411 - you say it's easily resized, how? (and what other VTT's have you tried?)

Dark Archive

The resizing takes a few minutes. In roll20 if you right click on your background image there is a way to let the VTT do it itself. after right clicking there is an advanced tab and then align to grid is an option. It then lets you highlight a 3x3 square on the background map and it will align it to the grid. I have tried doing it with the maps from inside books and it just does not seem to work the greatest. I don't think the maps are correctly proportioned in the books. Also if you are using the paizo flipmats you can set the grid to 24x30. After you have your map in you can turn on fog of war and it will be opaque for you but will only let the players see what you want them too.

I have used 2 other VTT i think there names where d20pro and gametable. They are not bad vtt but it takes forever to set things up and for gametable I had to sit and make all the minis and resize the maps in photoshop. The mean reason I like Roll20 over these is cause it is simpler and usually quicker to set up.

Another thing is that you can set up the characters/villains if you are using a pre made adventure you can enter there stat block in the characters notes for easy access.

I'm extremely interested in playing Roll20 with you guys.

Me and my friends used to play Pathfinder at weekends, but it's become to hard to get everyone together at the same time.

I'm not an expert, but I'd love to join in if you'll have me.

I would be interested aswell, UK player here aswell. I have been playing pathfinder for about a year but my gaming group has recently disbanded. I have a fair amount of experience with roll 20 have used it to DM and play in a couple of one shots.

I could play Wednesday, Thursday or Fridays as long as they are evenings during the week and a Sunday on the weekend.

I would be happy to be a player of GM depending on what everyone elses preferences are. I am by no means a veteran though :P

Same here. I'm really interested, although I would prefer Friday or Saturday evenings. I'm also don't have experience with PbP play, but want to give it a try.

Shadow Lodge

The 3x3 trick doesn't work, and moving the background to fine-tune always has a snap-to-grid type of effect that breaks any possible fine-tuning I can do with it.

I use Combat Assistant; once you have the maps extracted from the PDF, prepping each map takes only a couple of minutes to get the grid aligned, a few minutes more if you need to block out areas of the map.

oldswifty, we'd be playing pathfinder, just using the roll20 site as a platform. I donno about the others but i'm not an expert either.

Shamlyn and reshar, good to have more potential players... this is starting to shape up. wednesday or thursday would be most ideal for me... which is perhaps not best for reshar though... i could maybe squeeze fridays i'm not sure.

i'm gonna text my mate to see if he wants to join us and what days suit him.

also if anyone intersted in playing could post a few lines about what kinda game they enjoy (heavy role play, pure combat, etc..) that would be helpfull too :)

Hey there. I'd like to join in too, I'm at GMT+1, available every day from 9 am to midnight or a couple hours later. At last a game near my timezone! Anyway, I like roleplaying rather than rollplaying, but if it's almost only combat that's okay too. I really really want to try out Pathfinder, but hadn't had a suitable opportunity for it up until now. I already made five characters, two for rollplaying, three for roleplaying. My email is qgloafhun@gmail.com, can you please invite me?

Oh, on the topic of roleplaying vs. rollplaying, I have far more experience in the first one. I can roleplay either serious characters, silly ones or one mixing the two. Also, I like to maintain party balance, I'd want to make a character complementing the party members, so if I'm accepted into the game I hope you do not mind if I ask for other character's classes and roles.

The link I posted should give most of that information. Starting level is 1st.

@ monster - holly perception check!!! i didn't see that link :)

@qgloaf - roleplay Vs rollplay... priceless... I tend more towards the former cause i find it makes those times when you rollplay terrifying... that quirky character you've created and love could just die :O. Also i read that three times as "i am a GM+1" lol... a masterwork enchanted GM capable of inflicting damage upon magical creatures :P

I am more for the roleplay aswell :D Although I haven't had much experience in the player seat :P

Story wise I like to have a mix of dark and heroic fantasy :D

I'm good for wednesday or thursday nights, and enjoy adventuring with moderate combat rather than pure/heavy combat!

This sounds fantastic!

I'm quite frequently online, and as others have said, roleplay is more my cup of tea than rollplay. The two games I'm in (Monday and Wednesday nights) are pretty heavily dominated by combat. (Sure, it's the same group of people both nights, but hey, we switch the GM.)

So other than the aforementioned days, and possibly Tuesday evenings, I'm going to have free time to hop on Roll20. For characters, I can do just about anything. I have a massive number of characters I have yet to use, or even stat out, though I'd really enjoy a bomber alchemist. I'm running int-melee hybrids in my other games, and staying at range just sounds fun for a change.

Aw yes. So... Who would be the GM? Should we Europeans join Monster Master's USA game? I tried to join some American games but the timezone differences made them impossible to do : / though if it's PbP and not realtime then it's manageable.
So. I have some characters I made previously, stats and backstory included. A dwarven soul forger magus (yeah, I know, not really combat-viable), a tiefling bladebound magus, a human invulnerable rager barbarian, a half-elven synthesist summoner/gunslinger, a ratfolk vivisectionist alchemist and a human merciful healer cleric. (Yes, I like archetypes.) Which one should I take? Or should I make an entirely new character?
Oooor you guys might give me a character class and archetype and I'll make a character using that.

Well if you guys are able to play in the evening or late afternoon in you're time zones I could also play at that time, which would be the afternoon to late afternoon for me. I'm pretty flexible as far as times go at the moment, not having a job, or many other responsibilities.

You're backgrounds might need some adjustment, but I have specifically left much of the setting undetailed in order to allow for improvisation during play as well as to allow for the input of players. So an already made character might work.

Late afternoon sounds fine to me. Guys?

You can get around the snap-to grid by holding shift while you make changes.

Late afternoon generally works for me, depending on the day and how late in the afternoon :P I can probably play till around 11ish on the night.

Just let me know when!

So, who's coming to Monster Hill besides me?

Yes, surely you would not let him enter such a dangerous place alone?

Looked interesting but I didnt see a time or date on the portal.

I am interested and can play after six on a Wednesday or Thursday and I am quite flexible on a Sunday. I am from the UK so times are GMT for me :) Maybe looking at playing some kind of druid or ranger :D

Groose wrote:

I want to get a few more players ready to go before I set a date and time.

Grand Lodge

Depending on the local time and days I may be able to play once and while...

i'm interested in pretty much any online game atm, if you need more PC's i'm up for it and have all the books allowed for Monster Hill aside from Ultimate Magic and the ARG. (though i've played magus before going solely off the SRD). i'm available at any time, no matter how ridiculous, though saturdays are USUALLY when my erratic-as-hell RL group plays so any other day would be better. my time zone is CST, i'm in the US. i'm fairly experienced, and i don't have any particular preference for combat or roleplay: i like a balance, too much combat and it becomes 4e, too little and i get bored because i tend to play low-charisma, though that isn't definite. i'm willing to fill any party role, i'm pretty versatile. just don't expect novel-quality RP out of me. i'm also new to roll20, and may need help getting used to it.

I'd like to start seeing some characters so that we can get started soon. If anyone needs help let me know.

I can't seem to see character generation anywhere. Is it possible for you to post info on that please?

I would be interested in monster hill, would you prefer contact through obsidian portal?

^^ I linked to it in the third post.

^ Yes.

Grand Lodge

I'm current GMT -4

If I am not way to late I am definitely interested in Wednesdays if my timezone isn't too off. I have one class early in the morning and the rest of the day is squat. I've also never done play by post. Keep me updated, I'll play just about any character! Just have to whip it up.

I've always been too nervous to post on here, so here's my first post.

My time zone is Central time in the US, pretty sure that's GMT -6. Correct me if I'm wrong. Still available to play wednesdays.

I am interested, as well, if it's still a possibility. No clue if it is, though.

I played some games in the "Pathfinder Adventurers Guild" on Roll20, Im fairly new to all of this but I would love to join for some adventures too!

Have you guys started?

I'm still interested in running this, if people are interested in playing.

I'm interested, though I'm going to wait and see if I can get people to come to my weekly irl game first. (people... oi) I'll let you know either way on Tuesday evening. I'm US/Central, so I'm 5 hours into your past, though I'm up at odd hours so I can game whenever I don't work. I usually DM, so I'm not sure what sort of game I'd like to play in, lol. I want to play to get some roleplay fun, more than rollplay. When I DM I tend towards "epic" (lotr, starwars) in theme, though It'd be fun to experience something new too.

I'll be a player for you Monster Master, trying to figure out the time you're going to run it at etc. message me about it, so we can go through details a bit clearer.

Grand Lodge

I could play a game, I just need the rules.

I'd be interested in playing and learning more about the details of the game (if any have changed between the OP and now) and have a few evenings open (EST). My previous game which it seems, by good fortune, may very similar to this one in format and theme, has unfortunately been cancelled indefinitely. :(

I've got quite few character concepts and stories ready to work with and was hoping Monster Hill might be a good fit for them!

Would definitely like to discuss creation, time frames (I'm good for any night past 6:00 PM EST Mon-Wed) -- Wasn't able to access the Roll20 link.

I just read through your Obsidian Portal link, I like your pantheons and racial variants. One question though; are the class archtypes in the core books allowed, or only the ones you linked to?

I would definitely be interested in A) joining and B) learning more about it.

Things don't look good for my irl campaign, so you can count me in here.

Dotting for interest as well. GMT -8 though.
